Samuel J. Taylor

PORTSMOUTH - Samuel J. Taylor, 75, of 21 Raleigh Way, passed away at his home on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000.

Born Feb. 15, 1925, in New York City, he was the son of Samuel and Gertrude Taylor.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and retired from the U.S. Naval Reserves with 30 years of service.

He was also employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring as a general foreman from Shop 07.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Dorothy (Tyler) Taylor; two sons, Stephen Taylor of Hampton and Gary Taylor of Portsmouth; one daughter, Leigh "Lisa" Taylor of Stoneham, Mass.; two brothers, George Taylor of Florida and Arthur Taylor of Connecticut; one sister, Helen Gray of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

TAYLOR - Samuel J. Taylor, 75, of 21 Raleigh Way, Portsmouth, died Oct. 26, 2000. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Josephine C. Kaharl

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Josephine Chevalier Casey Kaharl, 88, a resident of Avante at Jacksonville Beach, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000.

Born in North Hampton, on Oct. 25, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Grace Chevalier.

She and her family moved to Madeira Beach, Fla., in 1953, after cross-country trips that took them from New Hampshire to Needles, Calif., and then to Madeira Beach, where she was a longtime resident and attended the Church by the Sea.

Later, she resided with her son, Jay, and his family in Gainesville before moving to Jacksonville Beach to be near her other son, Terry and his family.

She was the former organist and pianist for the United Church of Christ of North Hampton.

Family members include two sons, Terence P. Casey and Jay D. Kaharl; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia A. Casey; and two brothers, Raymond and Charles M. Chevalier.

Services were held at the chapel at Avante at Jacksonville Beach. Graveside services will be held at the Center Cemetery in North Hampton in the spring. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater N.H. Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301-4059.

Peter A. Gibbens

AMESBURY, Mass. - Peter A. Gibbens, 50, of Collins Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, in Norwich, Conn.

Born Jan. 20, 1950, in Biddeford, Maine, he was the son of Jean (Chabot) Gibbons of Amesbury and the late Robert M. Gibbens.

He was the husband of Mary L. (Bourque) Gibbens.

He was employed as a logistics management specialist with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was in Norwich on business for the shipyard when stricken.

More than anything, Peter loved and cherished his wife and family. He was very proud of his three children and their accomplishments. He enjoyed golfing, camping and playing with his grandchildren, and relaxing at his camp. He coached his daughter's hockey team and being a No. 1 fan, he never missed a game. He enjoyed life and wanted everyone around him to enjoy it, too. Everyone was always welcome in his home and his children's friends were his friends.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include a son, Robert M. Gibbens of Hawaii; two daughters, Michelle Kelleher and husband Jim of Amesbury, and Kathleen Babine and husband Robbie of Exeter; one brother, Robert M. Gibbens of Hayden, Idaho; two sisters, Patricia Curtis and husband Dana of Amesbury, and Jacqueline Baker and husband Daryl of Chesapeake, Va.; and three grandchildren, Mikael and Nikole Gibbens, and Jackson Babine.

GIBBENS - Peter A. Gibbens, 50, of Collins Street, Amesbury, Mass., died Oct. 24, 2000. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, in Holy Family Parish's St. Joseph Upper Church, School Street, Amesbury. Calling hours 5-8 p.m. Friday at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Holy Family Parish Renovation Fund, 6 Allen's Court, Amesbury, MA 01913.

Lillian Mary Gingras

KITTERY, Maine - Lillian Mary (Gingras) Gingras, 87, of Kittery died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 25, 2000, in Eliot, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born June 5, 1913, in Methuen, Mass., the daughter of Alfred and Adelina (Brochu) Gingras, she was a longtime resident of Lawrence, Mass., and later moved to and lived in Haverhill, Mass., from 1953 to 1986. She was a resident of Plaistow, N.H., from 1986 to 1989, before moving to Kittery.

She graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Lawrence. She sang for many years in Lawrence churches and also as a member of the former St. Joseph's Parish in Haverhill, where she was a soloist for weddings and funerals. She was also a former member of the Ladies of St. Anne Society, the Third Order of Mary and St. Joseph's Parish Choir. She was most recently a member of St. Catherine of Siena in Portsmouth, N.H.

Primarily a housewife and homemaker, she assisted her son in his local business for many years. Since 1959, she was a summer resident of the Greenlands in Hampton Beach, N.H. She will be fondly remembered by her family and friends.

The widow of Rudolph P. Gingras who died in 1989 and to whom she was married for 43 years, she is survived by a son, Daniel P. Gingras of Kittery, with whom she resided; a daughter, Constance (Gingras) Schofield and her husband, Michael of Auburn, N.H.; a grandson, Andrew Gingras; and a granddaughter, Dana Rose Gingras.

She was also sister of the late Alcide A. Gingras, who died in 1996.

GINGRAS - Lillian M. Gingras, 87, of Kittery, Maine, died Oct. 25, 2000. Relatives and friends may call 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill, Mass. Her funeral will be held at 12 noon, Monday, from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 1 p.m. at All Saints Church, Haverhill. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Plaistow, N.H. The Ladies of St. Anne will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Bruce C. Hutchings

KITTERY, Maine - Bruce C. "Hutch" Hutchings, 50, of 11 MacDougal St., died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at his home.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 8, 1950, the son of Lois Jane (Burnett) Hutchings of Portsmouth and the late Eugene Walter Hutchings.

He attended Portsmouth schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1969.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1969-1973 (active duty) and continued in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1973-1997, retiring as a boatswains mate chief senior (BMCS) after 28 years of service. He served his country in many parts of the world during his career.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a painter, instructor, foreman, planner, estimator and technician in design, retiring after more than 31 years.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Kittery Eliot Post No. 9394; Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 in Portsmouth, N.H.; Naval Enlisted Reserve Association; Maine Snowmobile Association; International Federation Professional Technical Engineers, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; and a former member of Metals Trades Counsel (painters) local 1915.

He was a former coach for the Kittery Pirates football team and a past vice president of the Marshwood High School Boosters organization.

An avid outdoorsman and sportsman, he loved to camp, hike, hunt, fly fish, ice fish and snowmobile.

Besides his mother of Portsmouth, survivors include his wife, Erin K. (Hamilton) Hutchings of Kittery; two daughters, Paula Philbrook of Brookline, N.H., and Heather Roberge of Cape Neddick; a son, Shane Hutchings of Dover, N.H.; stepson, Jonathan Hamilton of Kittery; stepdaughter, Jennifer Hamilton of Kittery; five grandchildren, Nickolas C. Hutchings and Haley A. Hutchings of Dover, N.H., Logan N. Roberge of Cape Neddick, and Ryan S. Philbrook and Devin Q. Philbrook of Brookline; brother, Eugene A. Hutchings of Portsmouth; two stepbrothers, Donald Farrand of Rochester, N.H., and Kenneth Farrand of Kittery; stepsister, Barbara Hazzard of Greenland, N.H.; stepmother, Phyllis Hutchings of Portsmouth; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

HUTCHINGS - Bruce C. "Hutch" Hutchings, 50, of 11 MacDougal St., Kittery, Maine, died Oct. 26, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today (Friday) at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with American Legion services at 5:30 p.m. today by Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 and VFW services at 5:45 p.m. by the Kittery Eliot Post 9394. Flowers will be accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Att: Gift Processing, 1309 Beacon St., Brookline, MA 02446. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Iva Jane Merriman

WESTBROOK, Maine - Iva Jane "Sue" Merriman, 64, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born in Westbrook, the daughter of Ronald K. and Lillian E. Daly Jordan. She was both raised and educated in Westbrook.

She worked at A & P for several years as a comptometer, Hanover Insurance as an assistant underwriter and L.L. Bean as a customer service representative.

She was a member of the Eagles Club for years and also of the Colonial Bowling League.

She was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend; she loved to attend all of her grandchildren's sporting events; and she enjoyed making crafts for her family and staying home with them.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Richard Merriman; one son, Richard of Scarborough; four daughters, Cindy Merriman of Raymond, Cathy Roy of Stratham, N.H., Carrie Sampson of Hollis, and Cheri Merriman of Gorham; two brothers, Ronald K. Jr. of Portland and Philip of Oneida, N.Y.; four sisters, Jackie Branch of Oviedo, Fla., Judy Leger of Revere, Mass., Liz Lyons of Casco, and Gladys Wood of Buxton; and 10 grandchildren.

MERRIMAN - Iva Jane Merriman, 64, of Westbrook, Maine, died Oct. 25, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, at the Blais Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. Funeral services will be private.

Donald Eugene Paradis

EXETER - Donald Eugene Paradis, 66, 0f 277 Water St., died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Lewiston, Maine, the son the late Leo and Olivette (Poliquin) Paradis.

Formerly of Raymond, he had resided in Exeter for the last five years.

He was formerly employed building homes in the New Hampshire area, and also for many years as a shoe cutter for Clicker City in Haverhill, Mass. After his retirement, he worked at Market Basket in Portsmouth for four years. He enjoyed building model cars and boats in his spare time.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Theora "Teddy" (Patterson) Paradis of Exeter; one daughter, Linda Paradis of Biddeford, Maine; two sons, Robert Paradis of Epping and Eugene Paradis of Warren, Maine; nine grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lilac Paradis of Westerly, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews.

PARADIS - Donald Eugene Paradis, 66, of Exeter died Oct. 26, 2000. Calling hours will be held 7-9 p.m. today (Friday) at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Florence A. Graves

KEENE - Florence A. Graves, 89, of 21 Roxbury Plaza, and a life-long resident of Keene, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 24, 2000, at Harborside Healthcare - Westwood, Keene.

She was born March 9, 1911, one of nine children to Francis and Delia (Lemere) Loranger.

She was the wife of the late Leon F. Graves Sr., who died in 1977 after 52 years of marriage.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley I. Clark, of Keene, and Phyllis Leon, of Kittery Point, Maine; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Leon F. Graves Jr., in 1998; three brothers; and five sisters.

GRAVES - Florence A. Graves, 89, of 21 Roxbury Plaza, Keene, died Oct. 24, 2000. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 13, in Monadnock View Cemetery, Park Avenue, Keene. The Rev. John Hurley, associate pastor, St. Bernard Church, Keene, will offer committal prayers. Friends are invited. There are no calling hours. The Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court St., Keene, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jamie Lee Jarest

SANBORNVILLE - Jamie Lee Jarest, 43, of Spruce Drive, died on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at home.

Born Sept. 30, 1957, in Dover, she was the daughter of Charles and Helen (Tuttle) Raitt. She had resided in Sanbornville for 10 years, having previously resided in Portsmouth.

Jamie was employed at Liberty Mutual in Dover.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Jarest of Sanbornville; her mother, Helen Raitt of Eliot, Maine; two sisters, Jeanette Welch of Eliot and Susan Loranger of Berwick, Maine; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and many nieces and nephews.

JAREST - Jamie Lee Jarest of Sanbornville died Oct. 25, 2000. A Memorial service will be held for her at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at the United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot, Maine, with the Rev. Ron Messier, pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Funeral Home, Wakefield Road, Sanbornville.

Walter F. Goode

YORK, Maine - Walter F. Goode, 86, of Sentry Hill died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 1, 1914, in Nova Scotia, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Goode. He was the nephew of Gertrude and William Finlay, who raised him as a child. He was a graduate of Waltham (Mass.) High School where he was the city champion in tennis and set records as a member of the track team.

He served in the Army during World War II in Normandy, northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe.

He was a manufacturing engineer of airplane instruments for Waters Manufacturing Co. in Wayland, Mass., for many years. He also worked as a watchmaker for the Waltham Watch Factory in Waltham and at his home. In 1999, he and his wife moved from Waltham to York.

He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed baseball and had been a Little League coach, and enjoyed being with his family.

He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley V. (Ryan) Goode, who died Oct. 22, 1999.

Survivors include two daughters, Joanne P. and her husband, Edward Coite of York, and Judith M. Goode of York; two grandchildren, Melissa and her husband, Dale Moulton of Cape Neddick, and Ryan Coite of York; and several nieces and nephews.

GOODE - Walter F. Goode of Sentry Hill, York, Maine, died Oct. 25, 2000 in York. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, in the York Street Baptist Church, York St., York. Private burial in the First Parish Cemetery, York. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Maine Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 106B, Portland, ME 04101-2406. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

COFFEY - Bertha E. Coffey of York, Maine, and formerly of Allston-Brighton, Mass., died Oct. 25, 2000, in York. A memorial Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Food Pantry, P.O. Box 243, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

BENNETT - Stephen Alden Bennett, 62, of Alexandria, Va., died Oct. 21, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Adirondack Repertory Dance Theatre, P.O. Box 2405, Glens Falls, NY 12801.

Walter S. Lermer

LACONIA - Walter S. Lermer, the son of Herman and Helen Lermer, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 24, 2000, after a battle with cancer. He was born in Newark, N.J. on Aug. 21, 1930. He and his wife, Ann (Reynolds), lived in West Long Branch, N.J., on a horse farm until moving to New Hampshire in 1972. He enjoyed his children, Jennifer, Fred, and Nicholas, and was amazed watching his grandchildren, Victoria, Marshall, and Donovan, grow and mature.

He loved the north country with its lakes and mountains. He was an avid skier, sailor and gardener. He was in the New Jersey National Guard for many years, and, after an active duty tour, attained the rank of captain, armor. He joined Allegheny Airlines (now USAirways) in 1955 and retired in 1987 after a very enjoyable career. He operated and was a co-owner of the Franconia Airport.

He was a member of the Borough Council of West Long Branch, N.J.; the Planning Board, North Hampton; a selectman for North Hampton; a member of the Retirement Board and a representative to ALPA from USAirways; and was an incorporator of the Taylor Home.

There will be no visiting hours or funeral service. Burial will be later, at the convenience of the family.

Please omit flowers. Donations in his memory may be made to the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchel Foundation, 675 Third St., New York, NY 10017.

There will be an open house at the Lermer home from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, at 49 Wentworth Cove Road, Laconia.

Margaret M. Conklin

LITCHFIELD, Conn. - Margaret M. (Caren) Conklin, 67, of Marsh Road, died Oct. 24, 2000, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Conn. She was the wife of Roy W. Conklin.

Born Nov. 21, 1932, in Suffern, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Francis and Margaret (Murtha) Caren. A graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland, she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority and the National Honor Society. For five years she taught public and parochial school and later was a saleswoman at the Mason Gift Shop in Litchfield. She had been a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader and an officer in the Rockland County Girl Scout Council. She was also an officer in the Clarkstown Little League and the Clarkstown Gridiron Club. In 1984 she moved to Litchfield and became a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Nancy A. Spencer, of Waitsfield, Vt.; two sons, Terence J. Conklin, of North Hampton, and Lee B. Conklin, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; a sister, Kathy Stahlecker; two brothers, Dr. William Caren and Robert Caren; five grandchildren, Jillian and Ali Spencer, Terence and Kristen Conklin, and Jenna Conklin; two daughters-in-law, Annemarie Conklin and Nancy Conklin; and a son-in-law, Ian Spencer.

CONKLIN - Margaret M. (Caren) Conklin, 67, of Marsh Road, Litchfield, Conn., died Oct. 24, 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 8 a.m., Friday, Oct. 27, at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Litchfield. Burial will be in Saratoga National Cemetery, Saratoga, N.Y. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, Connecticut Chapter, 45 South Main St., Room 111, West Hartford, CT 06107-2402.
