Lucien A. Castonguay

ROCHESTER - Lucien A. Castonguay, 89, formerly of Rochester, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Langdon Place of Dover. Born in Gonic, Feb. 8, 1911, he was the son of Ovide and Louisa (Roulx) Castonguay and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a retired shoe worker and carpenter, and a communicant of Holy Rosary Church in Rochester.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, particularly ice fishing. His hobbies included gardening, woodworking, cribbage and other card games.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Germaine, in 1963 and his second wife, Therese, in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Paul Castonguay, and his wife, Marge, of Blue Springs, Mo.; a daughter, Loretta Sullivan, and her husband, Frederick, of Greenland; a grandson, Michael Dallaire, and his wife, Kyle, of Potomac Falls, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Nicole, Simone, and Jacqueline Dallaire; a sister, Kilda Elliott; two brothers, Norman Castonguay and Joseph Maurice Castonguay; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Henri Castonguay, and two sisters, Anita Courchesne and Dora Jacques.

CASTONGUAY - Lucien A. Castonguay, 89, of Rochester, died Oct. 24, 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon at St. Leo Church, Main Street, Gonic. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday evening, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Rochester. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of N.H., 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Sonja Schultz Michaels

BEDFORD - Sonja Schultz Michaels, 52, of 30 Maple Drive, passed away peacefully on Oct. 24, 2000, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Exeter on Jan. 21, 1948, she was the second of four children of Glen and Ruby (Eastman) Schultz of Topsham, Vt.

She grew up in Exeter and graduated from Perry Normal School in Boston. Her teaching career spanned more than 25 years, during which time she taught more than 2,000 students in kindergartens in Bedford and Auburn. In recognition of her loving and caring teaching, she was recognized by Parenting New Hampshire as Teacher of the Month for May, 2000.

She is survived by her husband, Dave; her children, Kimberly and James; her parents; her sisters, Susan Phillips and Marilyn Anderson; and her brother, Kent Schultz.

MICHAELS - Sonja Schultz Michaels, 52, of 30 Maple Drive, Bedford, N.H., died Oct. 24, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Christ Church in Exeter, with interment following at Exeter Cemetery. Flowers are welcome or contributions in her name may be made to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Department of Angiography, Hanover, NH 03755. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys E. MacDougall

GORHAM - Gladys E. MacDougall, 80, of 9 Hamlin Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital.

Born June 23, 1920, in Lyndonville, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Verlie (Machell) Perham.

She was a resident of Gorham for many years, and had worked as a home health aide for AV Home Health until her retirement several years ago. She was also a member of the Methodist Church in Haverhill, where she had resided for a number of years.

She was the wife of the late Lawrence E. MacDougall Sr.

Survivors include her son, Lawrence MacDougall Jr. of Newfields; daughters, Mrs. Carol Bigl of Gorham, and Mrs. Verlie Trefethen of Dover; a brother, Mr. John Perham of Connecticut; 11 grandchildren, Corrine Brown, Bonnie Demanche, Eugene Trefethen, Glenn Trefethen, Candice Coyman, William Elwell, Tami Johnson, Kim Patton, Carol Ann Adams, Barbara Montgomery and Colleen LaRocque; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Merle Perham.

MACDOUGALL - Gladys E. MacDougall, 80, of 9 Hamlin Ave., Gorham, died Oct. 22, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Fleury-Patry Funeral Home Chapel, 33 Exchange St., Gorham. There will be no calling hours. William F. O'Brien

ROCHESTER - William F. O'Brien, 78, of 62 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, formerly of Newburyport, Mass., died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at the Sunbridge Nursing Home, in Rochester.

He was born on May 4, 1922, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of the late Wilbur N. and Sarah (Mullen) O'Brien.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Merchant Marine. He was the proprietor of the former O'Brien's Electric, in Newburyport, and proprietor of the former Chain Bridge Manor Restaurant, in Newburyport.

He is survived by six sons, Michael O'Brien, of Granite Bay, Calif., Kevin O'Brien, of Somerville, Mass., William P. O'Brien, of Bell Air, Md., Sean O'Brien, of Hampton Beach, Stephen O'Brien, of Rochester, and John J. O'Brien, of Florida; four daughters, Kathleen Buck, of Warm Springs, Ga., Theresa Lesko, of Plymouth, Mass., Mary Berry, of Kensington, and Susan O'Brien, of North Conway; two sisters, Patricia Cody, of Newburyport, Mass., and Elizabeth Halloran, of Amesbury, Mass.; two brothers, Charles O'Brien, of Slidell, La., and John O'Brien, of Manchester; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert O'Brien.

O'BRIEN - William F. O'Brien, 78, of 62 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, N.H., and formerly of Newburyport, Mass., died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Green Street, Newburyport, Mass. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Twomey-LeBlanc Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, Mass. Burial will be in the Veterans Lot, Newburyport, Mass.

GIBBENS - Peter A. Gibbens, 50, of Collins Street, Amesbury, Mass., died Oct. 24, 2000. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, in Holy Family Parish's St. Joseph Upper Church, School Street, Amesbury. Calling hours 5-8 p.m. Friday at the E.V. RAMSEY - Normand A. Ramsey, 73, of 7 Donald St., Gonic, N.H., and Long Beach Avenue, York Beach, Maine, died Oct. 24, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be in First Parish Cemetery. Joseph Edward McKinley

CARY, N.C. - Joseph Edward McKinley, 46, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in a boating accident.

He was an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer and bowler. He was most at ease and excited when coaching Little League baseball and football.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and son, and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon McKinley; one son, Scott McKinley, and his wife, Samantha; a daughter, Melissa McKinley; his mother, Judith McKinley; brothers, James and Patrick McKinley; sisters, Sandra Isom and Laurie Hozak; and grandchildren, Tanner and Zoe.

MCKINLEY - Joseph Edward McKinley, 46, of Cary, N.C., died Oct. 22, 2000. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, in the chapel of Cary Funeral Home, 3700 Cary Parkway N.W. Beulah E. Anderson

GREENLAND - Beulah E. Anderson, 87, of 3 Berry Lane, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation in Portsmouth.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Feb. 22, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Ulrika (Backman) Olson.

She attended Brooklyn schools.

She was the past president of the United Methodist Women in Port Jefferson, N.Y., and in Brooklyn.

She lived in New York until 1975, moving to Florida with her husband, where they lived until they moved to North Hampton in 1994.

She was the wife of Harold A. Anderson, who died in 1994.

Family members include one son, Ted Anderson of Florida; one daughter, Joan E. Gilman of Greenland; five grandchildren, Karl Anderson of Newmarket, Karin Bruckner of Plano, Texas, Bruce Hoglander of Marietta, Ga., Gail Hewins of Stratham, and Paige Holman of Exeter; and 12 great-grandchildren.

ANDERSON - Beulah E. Anderson, 87, of 3 Berry Lane, Greenland, died Oct. 22, 2000. Services will be held at the United Church of Christ, 295 Atlantic Ave., North Hampton, on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Nellie M. Lathrop

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - Nellie M. Lathrop, 86, the widow of Howard E. Lathrop, died Oct. 11, 2000, at the Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside.

She was born in 1914 in Exeter, N.H. Her parents, William and Mary Lucas, immigrated from Lithuania (then Russia) in 1906. She was married to Howard E. Lathrop in 1930. They spent 53 years together as longtime residents of Portsmouth, N.H. She was a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II and later was employed at General Electric in Somersworth, N.H., for 33 years.

She is survived by her children, Constance M. Luedtke and Howard A. Lathrop, also of Oceanside; two grandsons and one granddaughter, Dale Luedtke Jr. of Oceanside; Kurt Luedtke of Tucson, Ariz.; and Hae Ja Spitzer of Carlsbad; two great-granddaughters, Dalyn Luedtke of Oceanside and Hallette Luedtke of Tucson, Ariz; and one great-great-granddaughter, Perry Aspen Luedtke of Oceanside. Other surviving members of her family are Dorothy Stacey, Shirley Lathrop and Ed Johnson, all of Zephyerhills, Fla.; Brenda Stacey Lathrop of Portsmouth, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews in Florida, New Hampshire and Maine. Interment will be at the South Street Cemetery, Portsmouth, N.H.

Rose T. Gray

PORTSMOUTH - Rose T. Gray, 88, formerly of 55 Meadow Road, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Sunbridge of Portsmouth. Born in Portsmouth on March 27, 1912, she was the daughter of Louis and Antonina (Parisi) Vinciguerra and was a lifelong resident here. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1930, and did teacher training at the former Farragut School. She was employed for some time at the former Kimball's Department Store in downtown Portsmouth. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church and the Emblem Club of the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks.

She was the widow of George L. Gray, who died in 1969.

She is survived by three sons, Thomas Gray and his wife, Caroline, of Washington, D.C., Larry Gray and his wife, Kathy, of San Jose, Calif., and Richard Gray and his wife, Patricia, of North Hampton; five grandchildren; one sister, Mary Linchey and her husband, Bill, of Greenland; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by seven brothers, Frank, Alphonso, Angelo, Peter, Anthony, Joseph, and John Vinciguerra.

GRAY - Rose T. Gray, 88, formerly of 55 Meadow Road, died Oct. 24, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Joseph W. Welch

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Joseph W. Welch Sr., 72, of 40 Bedford Way, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home —Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Portsmouth. Monsignor Lawrence Burns, pastor, officiated. Altar server was Davis Palumbo. Maureen Sheehan was organist, and vocalist was Patricia MacKensen.

Bearers at the church were representatives from the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 American Legion, including Arthur Vancour, John Barnes, Edward Houle, William O. Doster and John Lorenz. An honor guard was formed at the church, including Elmer Dunn, past department commander; Ben Talford, alternate National Executive Committeeman; George V. West, national executive committeeman; and Elliot J. Morrison, past department commander.

In attendance were communicants of the church, representatives from the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 American Legion and representatives from the American Legion Department of New Hampshire, District 3.

Military honors were given at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen by representatives from the American Legion.

Committal services were given by Department Chaplain Raymond J. LaPointe. Honor guard consisted of Roland Patenaude, Ben Talford, Bob Wyman and Ray LaPointe. Bearers were Ray LaPointe, John Cushin, Ben Talford, Bob Wyman, Department Vice Commander Jerry Foster of Post No. 1 and Roland Patenaude.

Color guard was Charley Tracey of Post No. 1; Don Holmquist, past adjutant; John Zachodny, adjutant; and Tony Rabbia, past department commander.

Firing squad was Bill McDonald, Jerry Foster and Bill Dyment, all of Post No. 21; and John Cushin, department treasurer.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded by Roland Patenaude, commander of District No. 3, and Bob Wyman and presented to Mr. Welch's widow, Mrs. Dorothy A. (Cool) Welch, by Ben Talford.

American Legion services were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel Monday evening, by Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, including Commander Joseph Shaw; chaplain, and Michael Richards. Also assisting in the service were Vivian Snow, and June Daley, past presidents of Unit 6; Carl Walton, Patrick Snow and Don Poisson, past commanders of Post No. 6; Dennis Pierson, department commander; Paul Hollingsworth, color guard; Martina Hooley, department chaplain auxiliary; Reggie Hunt and Margaret Hunt of Woodsville Post No. 20; Dorothy Hunnewell, department secretary and treasurer of Post No. 48, Hudson; Doug Micklon, Post No. 63, Salem; Bill Hooley, Post No. 9, Derry; John Cushin, Post No. 2; George McCall, department vice commander Post No. 6; Don Small, past department commander Post No. 67; Don and Arlene Holmquist, Post No. 6, Keene; Elmer and Jackie Dunn, Post No. 47, Rollinsford; Elliot Antequera, Post No. 6 color guard; Kris West, national president American Legion Auxiliary; George West, nation

Normand A. Ramsey

YORK BEACH, Maine - Normand A. Ramsey, 73, of 7 Donald St., Gonic, N.H., and Long Beach Avenue, York, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born in Gonic on Sept. 3, 1927, he was the son of Alphonse H. and Helena (Lebrun) Ramsey. He was a 1946 graduate of Spaulding High School in Rochester.

He was the founder of Ramsey Supply Co. Inc. of Gonic. He was also the founder of the Anchorage Inns of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont and the Edgewood Centre nursing home of Portsmouth.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York.

He enjoyed doing auto body work, land development and raising dairy cows and beef cattle.

He is survived by his former first wife, Irene M. Ramsey of York Harbor; his former second wife, Jacqueline Ramsey of Center Conway, N.H.; four sons and their wives, Normand H. and Pamela Ramsey of New Castle N.H., Raymond A. and Carol Ramsey of York Beach, Michael R. and Nancy Ramsey of York, and David M. and Kimberly Ramsey of York Harbor; one daughter, Patricia M. Ramsey Farrell and her husband, Kevin Farrell, of York; one brother, Leonard "Pete" Ramsey of Port Orange, Fla.; two sisters, Madeleine Doyon of Somersworth, N.H.,and Jeanne Morneau of East Rochester, N.H.; and 13 grandchildren.

Theresa M. McMaster

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Theresa M. McMaster, 70, formerly of Portsmouth, were held Oct. 16, 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. George Ham. The readings were given by Rosemary Buia and Suzanne Levasseur. The Eucharistic Gifts were presented by Patricia Harte and Jean Harte. A hymn was sung by Stephanie Buia and Jacqueline Simpson. The eulogy was delivered by David Simpson. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery with the Rev. Ham conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Donald Simpson, Daniel Harte, Stanley Harte, Stephen Colen, Carl Colen, and Jamie Colen. Laments were played by bagpiper Eric Colen Jr.

Albert "Brownie" W. Brown

KITTERY, Maine - Albert "Brownie" W. Brown, 90, of 2 Old Ferry Lane, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born on Dec. 9, 1909, in Kittery, he was the son of Albert H. and Ruby C. Dodge Brown. He attended local schools and graduated from Traip Academy in the Class of 1928. He furthered his education in the business field, graduating from Bryant and Stratton in 1930.

Brownie retired after 32 years of service to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, serving in many capacities. He last was assigned to the Planning and Estimating Department. He enjoyed many activities including hunting, music, especially dancing and the great Los Angeles Dodgers. He thoroughly enjoyed fishing, especially fly fishing with one of the flies he enjoyed tying. He was a well-known part of the children's Christmas party in the shipyard and enjoyed his membership in the Naval Lodge No. 184 of Kittery, Scottish Rite Valley of Portland, KORA Temple Shrine of Lewiston, York County Shrine Club and the Piscataqua Chapter Order of Eastern Star. He attended First Congregational Church of Kittery Point.

He is survived by his sister-in-law and her husband, Marjorie and William Kunkel of Kittery, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Marion O. Hutchins Brown, in 1990; and a brother, Ted Brown.

Anne Clara Lincoln Coffey

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Anne Clara Lincoln Coffey of 73 Anita Drive, died at her home on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000.

Born in Newburgh, N.Y., on Jan. 30, 1919, daughter of the late Sarah Kinney Lincoln and Robert Lincoln, she was a graduate of St. Patrick's School, an honors graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and Spencer's Business College, all in Newburgh. After her marriage in 1940 to John T. Coffey, who passed away in 1987, they moved to Connecticut and settled in East Hartford where she lived for more than 50 years.

Anne worked for The Hartford Times for 17 years as obituary editor and news dictationist, and wrote the "Where To Go, What To Do" section. She later worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft as a secretary in the purchasing department until her retirement.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher's Church in East Hartford and had been a member of the original choir of that church and its Ladies Guild. She had also been a member of the Pratt and Whitney Retirement Club.

She leaves a son, John J. Coffey, and his wife, Patricia, of Rye, N.H.; two daughters, Johnet T. Kompanik, and her husband Alan Kompanik, of Marlborough, Conn., and Nancy S. Deane, and her husband Stuart Deane, of Newburyport, Mass.; five grandsons, Matthew Deane of New York City, Stephen Deane of Boston, Mass., Ryan and Kevin Kompanik of Marlborough, Conn., and John C. Coffey, of Rye, N.H.; a sister, Margaret Lincoln Ferguson, and her husband, retired Col. Chester Ferguson of Everett, Wash.; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

COFFEY - Anne Clara Lincoln Coffey of East Hartford, Conn., died Oct. 19, 2000. Her funeral will be held Oct. 25, 2000, from the Coloni Funeral Home, Route 9W, New Windsor, N.Y., with a Solemn High Requiem Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Church, Newburgh, N.Y. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Thomas Cemetery, Cornwall, N.Y.

Marion G. Heighton

EXETER - Marion G. Heighton, 76, of Laperle Avenue, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born June 26, 1924, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, the daughter of the late Murray and Mary (Crane) Dingwall.

A longtime resident of Lawrence and Andover, Mass., she had resided in Exeter for the last 13 years.

She was the widow of James A. Heighton who died Jan. 26, 2000.

She is survived by a son, James "Stan" Heighton of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Pamela Dallaire Hartford of Salem, and Faye Cormier Castonguay of Nottingham; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; four sisters, Dorothy Sweeney of Bradford, Mass., Shirley Musgrave of Methuen, Mass., Claire Williams of British Columbia, Canada; and Janet McKay of British Columbia, Canada; one brother, Ronald Dingwall of Nova Scotia, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

HEIGHTON - Marion G. Heighton, 76, of Laperle Avenue, Exeter, died Oct. 18, 2000. A funeral service was held Monday from the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., with the Rev. John Denson, rector of Christ Church, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, Kingston.
