Raymond N. LaBranche

DADE CITY, Fla. - Raymond N. LaBranche, 74, of Dade City, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000.

A native of Newmarket, N.H., he moved back to Dade City two years ago after living in Inverness for nine years. He was a service advisor for several local automobile dealerships. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church and was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Ann LaBranche; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Mae and Bobby Rosas, of Big Canoe, Ga.; four brothers, Robert LaBranche of Zephyrhills, Andrew LaBranche of Rochester, N.H., Leon LaBranche of Newmarket, N.H., and Richard LaBranche of Rollinsford, N.H.; three sisters, Edna Plante of Dover, N.H., Cecil Ross of Dade City, and Isabelle DeMerrit of New Hampshire; and two grandsons, Stephen Carter of Alpharetta, Ga., and Brian Carter of St. Petersburg.

LaBRANCHE - Raymond N. LaBranche, 74, of Dade City, Fla., died Oct. 18, 2000. A private graveside service will be held at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Make A Wish Foundation.

McMASTER - Funeral services for Theresa M. McMaster, 70, formerly of Portsmouth, were held Oct. 16, 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. George Ham. The readings were given by Rosemary Buia and Suzanne Levasseur. The Eucharistic Gifts were presented by Patricia Harte and Jean Harte. A hymn was sung by Stephanie Buia and Jacqueline Simpson. The eulogy was delivered by David Simpson. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery with the Rev. Ham conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Donald Simpson, Daniel Harte, Stanley Harte, Stephen Colen, Carl Colen, and Jamie Colen. Laments were played by bagpiper Eric Colen Jr.

Barbara (Hartford) Rogers

EPPING - Barbara (Hartford) Rogers, 80, of Route 27, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Sunbridge of Exeter after a long illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Epping, she was born on Aug. 24, 1920, the daughter of the late Lloyd and Florence (Foss) Hartford.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Clarence M. Rogers; his sister, Ruth Sampson of Sarasota, Fla.; a grandson, James L. Rogers Jr. of Colorado; twin granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, James L. Rogers, in 1995.

ROGERS - Barbara (Hartford) Rogers, 80, of Route 27, Epping, died Oct. 20, 2000. Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The family has requested that no flowers be sent. Brewitt Funeral Services and Crematory, 8 Pleasant St., Epping, is handling the arrangements.

SORIS - Philip J. Soris, 76, husband of Kiki (Bratiotis) Soris, of 14 Sheffield Road, Portsmouth, died Oct. 23, 2000, in Athens, Greece. Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Blanche R. Carrier

DOVER - Blanche R. Carrier, 92, of St. John's Apartments, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born May 4, 1908, in Attleboro, Mass., she was the daughter of William and Roseanna (Chaput) Arsenault.

She accompanied her husband to several Latin American countries in the 1940s, where she lived as a pioneer woman for eight years while he established mining operations in those countries. In 1967, she accompanied her husband to Saigon in the Republic of South Vietnam, where her husband was a contractor for military housing. It was during her stay there that the Tet Offensive took place.

She moved to this area in 1959 from Cumberland Hill, R.I. She was a licensed practical nurse, retiring in 1979 from Riverside Rest Home. She had also been employed previously at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

She was a communicant of St. Charles Church and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church.

In addition, she was a member of the Pioneer Garden Club and the Extension Club, where she did extensive volunteer work.

Family members include her daughter, Ilona Rines of Portsmouth; one sister, Mrs. Wilfred (Yvonne) Royer of Plainfield, Conn.; three grandchildren, Walter W. Rines of Stratham, Jason Rines and his wife, Regina Rines, of Rochester, and Lara Rines of Portsmouth; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Carrier, who died Jan. 11, 1973.

CARRIER - Blanche R. Carrier, 92, of St. John's Apartments, Dover, died Oct. 21, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Relatives and friends may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, at St. Charles Church, with the Rev. Leo L. Frechette as celebrant. Burial will be Wednesday afternoon at St. James Cemetery, Manville, R.I. Flowers are acceptable or memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Philip Stanley Trafton

HURLEY, Miss. - Philip Stanley Trafton, 72, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in Pascagoula.

Born July 15, 1928, in Portsmouth, N.H., he was a veteran of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer, having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He moved to Jackson County in 1967 and later retired from Ingalls Shipbuilding as an electric planner.

He was a member of Tanners Chapel United Methodist Church, the Submarine Veterans Association, the East Central Masonic Lodge No. 631, where he was a 32nd-degree Mason, and a member of the Joppa Shrine Temple in Gulfport. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the East Central chapter of the Order of The Eastern Star No. 393.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Philip M. and Mabel Hall Trafton; two brothers, Charles E. and Marshal H. Trafton; and a daughter, Margaret Carter.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Doris L. Trafton, of Hurley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Ray Fore of Hurley, and Missy and Matthew McCravy, of Greenwood, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Victoria Carter and Charles and Karen Carter, all of Harleston; a sister, Geraldine Trafton, of Portsmouth, N.H.; and a special friend, Debbie Bourn, of Wade; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

TRAFTON - Philip Stanley Trafton, 72, of Hurley, Miss., died Oct. 22, 2000, in Pascagoula. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 24, 2000, from Tanners Chapel United Methodist Church in the Tanner Williams Community. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2000, from the church, with the Rev. Mike Vice and the Rev. Ronnie Pierce officiating. Arrangements by Holder-Wells Funeral Home, Moss Point, Miss.

Martin J. Simko

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Martin J. Simko, 77, of 21 Grandview Terrace, who died Oct. 18, 2000, was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hampton, officiated. Burial followed in the Center Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore. The flag that covered the casket was presented to Mr. Simko's widow, Roberta M. (Bristol) Simko.

Jean (MacLoud) Stewart

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Jean (MacLoud) Stewart, 94, the widow of Malcolm Stewart, of 928 South St., died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born in Dorchester, Mass., on Oct. 7, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Sarah (Walker) MacLoud.

Survivors include one son, Robert Stewart of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Anna Stewart and Scott Stewart, both of Gloucester, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Arnold J. Grover

FREEDOM, N.H. - Arnold J. Grover, 90, of Babcock Road, Freedom, and also of Portsmouth, died Oct. 20, 2000, at his home on Ossipee Lake.

Born Feb. 3, 1910, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Ernest J. and Louise (Wood) Grover. He lived in Portsmouth for many years where he graduated from high school and later attended Graceland College. He worked as a service foreman with the New England Telephone Company for more than 40 years. Mr. Grover also served his country in the Army during World War II and retired from the Army Reserves as lieutenant colonel.

He was a member and past president of the Portsmouth Historical Society, a 50-year member and past master of the St. Andrews Lodge F&AM in Portsmouth, and a member of the Carroll Lodge, F&AM, Freedom. He was also a member of the New England Telephone Pioneers.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth (Morisette) Grover of Freedom and Portsmouth; two daughters, Judith Garbardina, Manchester, N.H. and Carol Grover, Arlington, Mass.; a granddaughter, Nancy Grant, Hampton, N.H.; a brother Ernest T. Grover, Hoquian, Wash.

GROVER - Arnold J. Grover, 90, of Freedom, N.H and Portsmouth, died Oct. 20, 2000. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee, N.H. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Freedom. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice of Southern Carroll County, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 003894, or the Medstar Ambulance Service.

Joseph W. Welch

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Joseph W. Welch, 72, the husband of Dorothy A. (Cool) Welch, of 40 Bedford Way, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at the Veterans Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt.

Born in Allston, Mass., on Jan. 11, 1928, he was the son of the late Michael Francis and Mary Ellan (O'Loughlin) Welch.

He served in the Air Force during World War II and was in the Merchant Marines.

He was past commander of the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion of Portsmouth; post service officer, grille chairman, five years as the District No. 3 service officer; department hospital chairman; VANR chairman.

Besides his wife, survivors include eight children, Sandra Jean Welch of Dorchester, Mass., Laurel Wilkinson of Somerville, Mass., Judith Irene Welch of Sanford, Maine, John Joseph Welch of England, Michael Francis Welch, Thomas Welch and Barbara Ann Welch, all of Dorchester, and William Robert Welch of Everett, Mass.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene F. Martell of Framingham, Mass.; and Agnes P. Lapczynski of Piscataway, N.J.; two brothers, John J. Welch of Florida, and William R. Welch of Arlington, Mass; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Joseph Warren Welch Jr.; sister, Mary E. Dixon; and two brothers, Richard F. Welch and Paul Welch.

WELCH - Joseph W. Welch, 72, of 40 Bedford Way, Portsmouth, died Oct. 20, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with American Legion services at 5:45 p.m. by the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the N.H. Veterans Home, P.O. Box 229, Winter Street, Tilton, NH 03276. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Elizabeth R. Bailey

UNION, N.H. - Elizabeth "Lib" R. Bailey, 97, formerly of Union, died Friday morning Oct. 20, 2000, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation of Wolfeboro, where she most recently resided.

Born Sept. 30, 1903, in Union, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (Harriman) Runnels. She was a graduate of Nute High School in Milton, Class of 1921. A native of Union, she also resided many years in Trumbull, Conn., and had retired to Lake Park, Fla. for several years.

Prior to retirement, she had worked as a bookkeeper at Bailey and Blendinger Knives in Union and also at Rocky's Tire Store in Bridgeport, Conn.

She was a member of the Union Congregational Church and its Woman's Fellowship, the .V.F.W. Auxiliary of Union, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 21 of Union and was a Past Grand Officer and was honored as the oldest living Past Grand Matron.

The widow of the late William A. Bailey, who died in 1988, and I. Howard Atherton, who died in 1947, she is survived by her daughter Lillian A. Sohn of York, Me.; two grandchildren, Patricia A. Sohn of Burbank, Calif. and Arthur R. Sohn of Covina, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; and two nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Martha Williamson; and grandson, John Howard Sohn.

BAILEY - Elizabeth R. Bailey, 97, of Union, N.H., died Oct. 20, 2000. The Funeral Service will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the Union Congregational Church on Main Street, in Union, with Rev. John Simpson, pastor, officiating. The calling hour is prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Lovell Lake Cemetery in Sanbornville. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Union Congregational Church c/o Carolyn Pike, 38, Main St., Union, NH 03887. Arrangements are in the care of C.E. Raymond Dupuis

SOMERSWORTH - Raymond Dupuis, 68, of 12 Midway Park, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born Oct. 4, 1932, in Somersworth, he was the son of Frank and Georgianna (Lessard) Dupuis.

He was employed as a draftsman with General Electric retiring 15 years ago. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 41 years, Helen A. (Mallen) Dupuis; two sons, Steven and his wife, Cathy, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and John Dupuis of Fitchburg, Mass.; one daughter, Michele and her husband, Matt Hussey, of Rochester; five brothers, Robert, Richmond and Renaud, all of Somersworth; Ronald of Massachusetts, and Rudolph of Florida; four sisters, Rita Doyon of Berwick; Anita Eschmann and Lorraine Normand both of Somersworth and Rachel Dupuis of Concord; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

DUPUIS - Raymond Dupuis, 68, of 12 Midway Park, Somersworth, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000. Friends and relatives may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at Holy Trinity Church, Somersworth with the Rev. Tom Coover as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dover. Flowers are acceptable. Those who wish may make donations in his name to the charity of their choice.

Frederick Durgin

YORK - Clayton Frederick Durgin, 70, of 20 Old Mast Road, and former resident for 20 years in Jerrico, Vt., died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at his residence.

Born in York, Oct. 25, 1929, he was the son of Harold and Sara (Norton) Durgin. Mr. Durgin attended York and Kittery schools and graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He married Muriel (Low) in Barre, Vt.

Mr. Durgin had worked for the Bausch and Lomb Optical Company in Rochester, N.Y., General Electric in Burlington, Vt., and was a partner in Durgin and Brown Inc., an engineering firm in South Burlington, Vt. In 1990, he retired from the General Dynamics Company in Burlington, Vt.

He collected, restored and showed classic Mercedes Benz automobiles. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York. He was also the president of the Granite State Section of the Mercedes Benz Club of America, and a member of the Vermont Automobile Enthusiasts.

Survivors include his wife, Muriel Durgin of York; father, Harold Durgin of Kittery; sons, Bruce Durgin of San Jose, Calif., David Durgin of Bristol, Vt., Michael Durgin of Manteca, Calif., Matthew Durgin of Watertown, Mass.; daughters, Carolyn Dunlap of Moorpark, Calif., Colleen Durgin of Wheatland, Calif., brother, Neil Durgin of Williston, Vt.; sister, Ann Blake of Kittery; and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his mother, and a brother, Richard.

DURGIN - Clayton F. Durgin, of Old Mast Road, York, died Oct. 19, 2000, at his residence. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York. Burial will be private. There are no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Organ Restoration Fund, First Parish Church, 180 York St., York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Canon Rev. Edward H. Williams IVM

WOODSTOCK, Vt. - Canon Rev. Edward H. Williams IV, 85, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Born March 20, 1915, in Bethleham, Pa., he was the son of Edward H. Williams III and Gladys (House) Williams.

Father Ned was educated in Woodstock, Vermont, Greece, and in Pennsylvania, before graduating from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., a college founded by his great-great-grandfather Col. Ephrium Williams. He then went to General Theological Seminary School in New York, N.Y. On Oct. 12, 1942, he was ordained as an Episcopal priest. Father Ned spent a number of years as minister of parishes in Swanton, White River Jct., Norwich and Bellows Falls, Vt. He then worked within the New York Diocese for many years serving the Albany Cathedral and ministering to many smaller Albany area churches. He returned to Vermont as the minister of the Bethel church for a number of years. Father Ned spent his so-called retired years filling in and helping out at a number of churches in the area, including being very dedicated and involved at the St. James Episcopal Church in Woodstock.

He is survived by a sister, Jean A. Williams of Woodstock, Vt.; a brother, C. Richard Williams of Portsmouth; many nieces; nephews; cousins; great nieces; great nephews; great-great nieces; and great-great nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Jacqueline W. Butler.

WILLIAMS - Canon Rev. Edward H. Williams IV, 85, died Oct. 19, 2000. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at the St. James Episcopal Church in Woodstock, Vt. Rev. Christina Brannock will officiate. Burial will follow in the Riverstreet Cemetery in Woodstock. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Friends wishing may make donations to the Norman Williams Public Library, 10 South St., Woodstock, VT 05091, or to the St. James Episcopal Church, the Green, Woodstock, VT 05091. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home, 1 Rose Hill, Woodstock, VT 05091.

Herschel B. Burt

EXETER - The funeral for Herschel B. Burt was held Thursday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home. A celebration of his life was held at the Exeter United Methodist Church, Exeter. The Rev. Daniel V. Weaver officiated. Joyce Milner was the organist. His daughter-in-law, Joanne Burt, sang "In the Garden," and his son, Thomas B. Burt, offered words of encouragement and remembrance. Private burial was in Exeter Cemetery with committal prayers by the Rev. Weaver.

Richard P. Coakley

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Richard P. Coakley (Dick), a World War II veteran, resident of Grand Junction, Colo., and formerly of Waukesha, Wis., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at his son's home in El Dorado Hills, Calif.

He was married to Dorothy Koenigs June 18, 1949. The couple moved to Grand Junction in November 1971.

Survivors include two daughters and three sons; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sister, Grace Klingler of Wauwatosa, Wis.

Martin J. Simko

NORTH HAMPTON - Martin J. Simko, 77, of 21 Grandview Terrace, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born April 30, 1923, in Bridgeport, Conn., he was the son of the late Martin and Julia (Wargo) Simko. He had resided in North Hampton for the past 37 years, moving there from Fairfield, Conn.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Marine Corps.

For many years, he was the owner and operator of Simko Construction.

He was a member of the Abenaqui Country Club, Rye Beach.

He was the husband of Roberta M. (Bristol) Simko for 37 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include eight children, Sharon Simko of Hawaii, Kathleen Rice of Natick, Mass., Laura Simko of Nova Scotia, Canada, Mary Simko of California, Barbara Erickson of Greensboro, N.C., Christine Erickson of Greenland, Linda Erickson of North Hampton, and Douglas Erickson of Eliot; one brother, William Simko of Norwalk, Conn.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

SIMKO - Martin J. Simko, 77, of 21 Grandview Terrace, North Hampton, died Oct. 18, 2000. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home from noon until the hour of the service on Saturday. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701, or to the American Lung Association, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Bedford, NH 03110.
