Margaret S. Haskell

KITTERY - Margaret S. (Benton) Haskell, 86, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born March 6, 1914, in Waterboro, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Irving and Katharine (Oldrieve) Benton.

She spent her earlier years in Hollis Center and then moved to Kittery, where she made her home for the past 25 years.

She worked as a housecleaner in the housecleaning departments of Portsmouth Regional Hospital and also at the Henrietta D. Goodall Hospital and Nursing Home in Sanford. She took great pride in her work, and enjoyed the people with whom she worked over the years.

She was very fond of and active in her church; she was a former member of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth and later became a member of the North Waterboro Baptist Church.

She also enjoyed crocheting and, over the years, she made wonderful, decorative afghans.

She was predeceased by her former husband, Lloyd B. Haskell Sr.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Margaret R. L. Buzzell and her husband, George, of Kittery, and a sister, Evelyn McConihe.

She received a lot of joy and happiness being around her beloved seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Her dedication and caring for friends and family will be missed, but not forgotten.

She was predeceased by two sons, Lloyd B. Haskell, who lost his life in 1966 serving his country in Vietnam, and Clinton Irving Haskell, who died in 1977. She was also predeceased by a brother, Irving Benton.

HASKELL - Margaret S. Haskell, 86, of Kittery, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at York Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Vivian Martindale, pastor, will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in North Waterboro Cemetery. Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Elaine R. Larson

GOFFSTOWN, N.H. - Elaine R. (Robinson) Larson, 68, of 84 Shirley Hill Road, passed away peacefully at her residence on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000.

Born March 11, 1932, in Swamscott, Mass., she was the daughter of Willard Herbert and Rita (Briand) Robinson. She had resided for the past two years in Goffstown. She spent many years in Swamscott, and also resided in Arizona and Rye.

She was a self-taught artist who loved to work with her hands. She now joins her husband and soul mate, Kenneth Larson, who died in 1998.

Survivors include her mother of Swamscott; two daughters, Lori Larson of Greenland and Kendra Viviers of Goffstown, N.H.; two grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Charles E. Harte

PORTSMOUTH - Charles E. Harte, 78, of 225 Colonial Drive, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, N.H., after a sudden illness.

Born March 16, 1922, in Fall River, Mass., he was the son of Edward and Mary (Doherty) Harte. He had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1952, and was a summer resident of Ossipee Lake for many years.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy. He was employed for 30 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1981 as the supervisor of Shop 51.

He was a member of St. James Church, American Legion Post No. 6, and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Edith M. (Hert) Harte; four daughters, Mary Harte of New Castle, Joan Harrington of Somersworth, Jean Lerch and her husband, Bob, of Exeter, and June Palmer and her husband, Glen, of Greenland; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly Graham of Haverhill, Mass., and Carol Brogna of Fitchburg, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Edwin, Neil, Robert, William and Michael Harte.

HARTE - Charles E. Harte, 78, of 225 Colonial Drive, Portsmouth, died Oct. 6, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Church, Route 1, Lafayette Road. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Meals on Wheels Program, 245 Middle St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Katherine S. Welch

EXETER - Katherine S. "Kitty" (Cracknell) Welch, 84, lifelong resident of Topsfield, Mass., passed away on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare, Exeter, were she was a resident since 1998.

She was the wife of the late Theodore "Ted" Welch, who passed away in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, George Welch of Sacramento, Calif., and Thomas Welch of Anchorage, Ala., and her devoted daughter, Linda (Welch) Thayer of Exeter; three granddaughters and their spouses and children, Eric and Susan Eno and their son, Eric Jr., of Exeter, Eric and Carol Durant and James, Ashleigh and Linny of Hampton, and Pamela Thayer and Jerry Mosesian of Newburyport, Mass.; and her Yorkshire terrier, "Baby."

She was predeceased by her two sisters, Georgina Cracknell and Virginia (Cracknell) Brotchie.

She was fond of reading, sewing and crafts.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church in Topsfield, Mass., for many years. She was also an extremely devoted grandmother.

She leaves behind at Exeter Healthcare many special friends who cared for her deeply.

WELCH - Katherine S. Welch, 84, died Oct. 5, 2000. Visiting hours will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the Campbell Funeral Home in Beverly, Mass. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church in Topsfield, Mass. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Topsfield. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, Beverly, Mass.

Beulah C. Fisk

BRENTWOOD - The funeral for Beulah C. Fisk, 89, formerly of Stratham Heights Road was held Thursday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. Services were held at the Stratham Community Church. The Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine officiated. Organist was Sally Wool, soloist was Florence Wiggin.

Words of remembrance were offered by Mrs. Fisk's grandson, Robert F. Fisk Jr., and her granddaughter, Diane Lombardo.

Burial followed in the Exeter Cemetery with committal services conducted by the Rev. Bodine. Pallbearers were Craig Fisk, Robert F. Fisk Jr., Douglas Fisk, Tom Caverno, Carroll Winch and Denis Kurchaski.

Evelyn K. Kearnes

EXETER - Evelyn K. Kearnes, 90, of Stoneybrook Lane, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at the Exeter Hospital after a long illness.

Born April 7, 1910, in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Delia (White) Denoncour.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Exeter, she attended Robinson Female Seminary, and later worked many years as a fancy stitcher for the Wise Shoe Co.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church of Exeter.

She was the wife of George E. Kearnes of Exeter for 54 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three grandsons, Russell DeSimones, Rocco Joseph DeSimones and Robert F. DeSimones, all of Lincoln, R.I.; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eldora Morel of Brentwood and Anne Fortier of Exeter; one brother, Eldon Denoncour of Exeter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Mona DeSimones, who died in 1975; one brother, Albert Denoncour; and one sister, Veronica Demasky.

KEARNES - Evelyn K. Kearnes, 90, of Stoneybrook Lane, died Oct. 5, 2000. Calling hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at St. Michael's Church of Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. Flowers are acceptable.

Nancy H. Newick

NEWINGTON - Nancy H. (Buswell) Newick, 76, of 34 Fabyan Point Road, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at home.

Born in Newburyport, Mass., on April 9, 1924, she was the daughter of the late J. Merton and Harriet Edna (Currier) Buswell.

She attended the Jacob F. Spaulding Elementary School, was a graduate of Amesbury High School, Class of 1942, and attended the Salem Commercial School for Accounting.

Before her marriage to George J. Newick on Oct. 8, 1955, she was employed by the Amesbury Electric Light Co. in the 1940s.

She was a member of the Salisbury Methodist Episcopal Church in Salisbury, Mass.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, John W. Newick and his wife, Jill, of Stratham; three grandchildren, Brandon D. Gove of Milton, N.H., Matthew W. Newick of Milton, and Abigail E. Phaneuf of Stratham; a sister, Eleanor Morse and her husband, Walter, of Florida; two nephews, David Morse and his wife, Pat, of East Kingston, and Donald Morse and his wife, Linda, of Florida; three grandnephews and one grandniece.

NEWICK - Mrs. Nancy H. (Buswell) Newick, 76, of 34 Fabyan Point Road, Newington, N.H., died Oct. 5, 2000. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Newington Cemetery. Friends invited. There will be no visiting hours. Donations in her memory may be made to Portsmouth Regional Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the Newington Town Church, Nimble Hill Road, Newington, NH 03801. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Constance Cone

PORTERSVILLE, Calif. - Constance Cone, wife of the late Marine Lt. Gordon Cone, died Sept. 28, 2000. The Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery held a graveside service at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Cemetery. The base chaplain, Lt. Cmdr. Randall A. Chapman, recited committal prayers.

Those in attendance were Deborah White, the shipyard public affairs officer; Alan Robinson, deputy public affairs officer; and Debra Hames, photographer and editor of the shipyard newsletter The Periscope.

This was the first burial in the cemetery in quite awhile, and the photographs and documentations will be placed in the archives and records at the naval base museum. The Meyers Funeral Home of Portersville, Calif., handled the out-of-town arrangements.

Philip Marcous

NEW CASTLE - A service was held for Philip Marcous on Monday, Oct. 2, at New Castle Commons, his favorite place, by close friends sharing memories. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Joanne Tonis Drake

TRENTON, MAINE - Joanne Tonis Drake died at home with her family in Trenton on Monday, Oct. 2, 2000.

Born Oct. 11, 1929, in Brockton, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Una and Frank Tonis of Rye.

She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Philip S. Drake; a son, Frank Abbot Drake and his wife, Elizabeth, of Rye Beach; a daughter, Victoria Smallidge and her husband, David, of Lamoine, Maine; a sister, Patricia Atkin of Darien, Conn.; and five grandchildren, Jessica Caruso and Rachel Smallidge, both of Lamoine, and Zachary, Collin and Liza Drake of Rye Beach.

Ethel Small Moreau

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Ethel "Joni" Small Moreau, 65, of Portsmouth, were held Wednesday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with graveside services at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Father Edward J. Kelley, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church, officiated.

In attendance were many friends from the Margeson Apartments.

Eleanor V. Bevan

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Eleanor V. (Howell) Bevan, 89, of 263 Rockland St., were held on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with the Rev. William T. Richards Jr., pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

In attendance were members of the church and representatives from the Senior Center in Portsmouth.

Burial was in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, with committal by the Rev. Richards.

Bearers were Jared Woodward, Craig Cormier, Francis Cormier and Wayne Woodward.

Paul C. Hodson

PORTSMOUTH - Paul C. Hodson, 58, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, after a serious illness.

He was born in Stoneham, Mass., attended Stoneham High School and served in the U.S. Air Force.

Employed by Pan Am at the time of his death, he previously worked 14 years as a carpet layer and a pipefitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was also a professional truck driver, private pilot and a licensed scuba diver.

He was son of the late Marie Kinsley of Maine and the late James Hodson of Massachusetts, brother to Arthur Joseph White of Pennsylvania, Richard Hodson of Florida, the late Barbara Harris and the late Lillian Lindhal, both of Pennsylvania; brother-in-law to Richard Harris of Pennsylvania; father to Paul D. Hodson of New Hampshire and Pauline Mott of Maine; and grandfather to Jennifer and David Mott of Maine, and Alana and Kira Hodson of New Hampshire.

Joanne Tonis Drake

RYE - Joanne Tonis Drake died at home with her family on Monday, Oct. 2, 2000.

Born Oct. 11, 1929, in Brockton, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Una and Frank Tonis of Rye.

She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Philip S. Drake; a son, Frank Abbot Drake and his wife, Elizabeth, of Rye Beach; a daughter, Victoria Smallidge and her husband, David, of Lamoine, Maine; a sister, Patricia Atkin of Darien, Conn.; and five grandchildren, Jessica Carvso and Rachel Smallidge, both of Lamoine, and Zachary, Collin and Liza Drake of Rye Beach.

DRAKE - Joanne Tonis Drake died Oct. 2, 2000. A remembrance gathering of family and friends will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 7 at her daughter's home, 510 Douglas Highway, Lamoine, Maine. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 13 at the Rye Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Hancock County Hospice or your local Hospice, the SPCA or The American Cancer Society. Arrangements with Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast, Maine.

Catherine Boire

BERLIN, N.H. - Catherine Boire, 89, formerly of 208 Portland St., died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 19, 1910, in Montreal, P.Q., Canada, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Bridget (Theberge) Thompson.

A homemaker, she was a founding member of the St. Kieran Alter Guild and Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was a member of St. Kieran Church for 65 years and a Daughter of Isabella for 50 years.

She was the wife of the late Donald Boire, who died on May 3, 1989.

Survivors include a son, Gary L. Boire and his wife, Carol, of Eliot, Maine; two sisters, Rita Sgrulloni of Gorham, N.H., and Ina Perron of Claremont, N.H.; three grandchildren, Catherine Boire of Napa, Calif., David Boire of Hawkinsville, Ga., and Bryan Boire of Macon, Ga.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald Boire, who served as a captain pilot for Delta Air Lines; an infant daughter, Marilyn Boire in 1942; five brothers, James Thompson, Bernard Thompson, Philip Thompson, John Thompson and Leo Thompson; two sisters, Marguerite Donaldson and Erma Bernard.

BOIRE - Mrs. Catherine Boire, 89, formerly of 208 Portland St., Berlin, N.H. died Oct. 4, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at St. Kieran Church, with interment in St. Kieran Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Fleury-Patry Funeral Home, 72 High St., Berlin, NH 03570.
