Robert E. Spinney

ELIOT - Robert E. Spinney, 73, of Bolt Hill Road, died suddenly on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 30, 1927, in Eliot, he was the son of Sidney and Alma Leavitt Spinney. He attended local schools and graduated from Eliot High School.

He retired in 1974 as a fire captain from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Fire Department. He was earlier employed by Dow Oil Co. of Eliot, and for many years after retirement by Ray Grover as a backhoe operator.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed spending time at his camp with his family, fishing and hunting and was thrilled to have received his doe permit for this year's deer hunt.

He enjoyed an affiliation with the Naval Masonic Lodge No. 174 of Kittery and served his community as a volunteer firefighter with the Eliot Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 54 years, Dorothy Smith Spinney; his daughters and their husbands, Joyce and James Dove of Clermont, Fla.; Judith and Frank Jewett of Oxford, Maine; his son, Dennis and his wife, Linda Spinney, of Eliot; his sister, Louise Stukas of Kennebunk, Maine; and nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Paul Spinney, in 1998.

SPINNEY - Robert E. Spinney, 73, of Bolt Hill Road, Eliot, died Sept. 28, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association Maine Affiliate Inc., PO Box 346, Augusta, ME 04332-0346. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Roger A. Lavigne

KITTERY - Roger A. Lavigne, 81, of 28 Island Ave., died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 1, 1918, in New Bedford, Mass., he was the son of Oscar and Eva (Charland) Lavigne and had been a resident of the Seacoast since the early 1940s.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the Seabees. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter, retiring with 30 years of service.

Together with his wife, Jeannette (Pouliot) Lavigne, he owned and operated Roger's Cafe on State Street in Portsmouth for many years.

He was a member f the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Creek AC, and was a life member of the Portsmouth Lodge of the Elks.

In addition to his wife of 62 years, survivors include two daughters, Camille Crowley and her husband, Patrick, of Portsmouth, and Romona Dow and her husband, Ronald, of Portsmouth; one granddaughter, Angela Collins of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.

LAVIGNE - Roger A. Lavigne, 81, of 28 Island St., Kittery, died Sept. 29, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours 4-7 p.m. Monday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the Edgewood Centre Recreation Fund, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Lewis E. Butler Jr.

EXETER - Lewis E. Butler Jr., 56, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born July 10, 1944, in Southport, Maine. Formerly of Hampton, he had resided in Exeter for the past three years.

A Vietnam War veteran, he had served in the Air Force for more than 20 years. He was the sergeant at arms for American Legion Post No. 31 in Exeter.

He was the husband of Ann (Gray) Butler of Exeter.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Kyle Butler of Mechanic Falls, Maine, Andrew Butler of Arizona, Michael Drew of Camden, N.Y., and David Drew of Exeter; two daughters, Lori Simoglou of Salem, Mass., and Bonnie Richard of Windham, Maine; five grandchildren; his father and mother, Lewis E. and Theda (Stanhope) Butler Sr. of Pittsfield, Maine; his grandmother, Christina Butler of Pittsfield, Maine; four sisters, Carol Robinson, Anita Welch, Linda Mitchell and Loretta Bowdin, all of Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

BUTLER - Lewis E. Butler Jr., 56, of Exeter, died Sept. 28, 2000. There will be no calling hours. Burial with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, N.H. Brewitt Funeral Service, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements.

Catherine C. Merchant

HAMPTON - The funeral for Catherine C. Merchant, 80, of 689 Lafayette Road, Seabrook, was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Andrew C. Gosnell, pastor of the Ashby Congregational Church, Ashby, Mass., officiated. Jean Goss was organist.

Burial followed in the West View Cemetery, Hampton Falls, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Gosnell. Pallbearers were Forrest Carter, Forrest Carter Jr., Casey Carter, Jarett Fortin, Peter Sanborn and Michael Turcotte.

Donald J. Butler

HAMPTON - The funeral for Donald J. Butler, 53, of 8 Jeffrey Drive, was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, and the Rev. John Denning of Stonehill College, North Easton, Mass., were the celebrants. Nelson K. Ward was organist. Patricia Mackensen was soloist.

Acolytes were Andrew Bobolas, Bobby Lembert, Frank Ryan and William Pray. The gifts were presented to the altar by Donald's children, Jonathan, Jeffrey and Kate Butler. Sandi Shores and Joel Butler offered the readings. Words of remembrance were offered by the deceased's brother, William Butler, and Father John. Burial followed in High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with committal service conducted by Father Griffin.

Charles H. Spencer

SOUTH BERWICK - Charles H. Spencer, 71, of 16 Pleasant St. died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at his home following a period of failing health.

Born Dec. 26, 1928, in South Berwick, he was the son of Howell O. and Susan E. (Warren) Spencer. He was a lifelong resident of South Berwick.

He retired in 1986 from Pease Air Force Base where he worked as groundskeeper.

He served in World War II in the United States Navy and was retired from the U.S. Naval Reserves.

He attended Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick. He was a member and trustee of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; the American Legion, Kittery Post No. 9394, where he was former vice commander; and the Fleet Reserve Association.

He was the husband of the late Pauline A. (Rollins) Spencer, who died March 28, 1996.

Survivors include one son, Warren C. Spencer of South Berwick; two daughters, Linda S. Allen of Epping and Karen A. Chavez of South Berwick; and eight grandchildren.

SPENCER - Charles H. Spencer, 71, of 16 Pleasant St., South Berwick, died Sept. 28, 2000. Relatives and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday at McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Cole, pastor of Bethel Christian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford. Memorial donations may be made to Old Berwick Historical Society, c/o Paul Colburn, Academy Street, South Berwick, ME 03908.

HAM - Harold J. Ham, 69, of 20 Islington St., Portsmouth, died Sept. 21, 2000. A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Friends invited. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Delma M. Henderson

HAMPTON - Delma M. Henderson, 66, of 195 Towle Farm Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 29, 1933, in Washburn, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Fay (Thomas) Brooker.

She was raised in Washburn and was a graduate of Washburn High School. She lived for many years in Hampton.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was the wife of the late Elwood R. Henderson.

Survivors include two sons, Michael R. Daignault of Mechanic Falls, Maine, and Randy W. Henderson of Henderson, Texas; three daughters, Patty L. Hazell of Seabrook, Valerie Hunt and Loretta L. Delisle, both of Hampton; 12 grandchildren; four brothers, Earlon W. Brooker of North Berwick, Maine, Harold L. Brooker of Searsport, Maine, Loren S. Brooker of Dearborn, Mich., and Michael L. Brooker of Washburn; two sisters, June L. Baldwin of Gloucester, Mass., and Nelda F. Bowley of Johnstown, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

HENDERSON - Delma M. Henderson, 66, of Hampton, died Sept. 27, 2000. Services will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial will be in Washburn, Maine. The family requests no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Timothy Knight Scholarship Fund, PO Box 426, Seabrook, NH 03874.

Jane (Kalinski) Navelski

RYE - Jane (Kalinski) Navelski, 91, formerly of 1201 Washington Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Webster at Rye Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born May 14, 1909, in Russia, she had been a resident of the Seacoast for many years.

She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of the late Martin Navelski, who died in 1986.

NAVELSKI - Jane (Kalinski) Navelski, 91, formerly of 1201 Washington Road, Rye, died Sept. 28, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Catherine Church, 845 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, N.H.

Robert T. Gitschier

DOVER - Robert T. "Lefty" Gitschier, 80, of 319 Middle Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at his home.

Born Jan. 3, 1920, in Dover, he was the son of the late Herman and Catherine (Kelly) Gitschier.

He was a graduate of Dover High School, Class of 1939, and had served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was employed as a machinist by Kidder Press/Moore Business Forms for more than 35 years, retiring in 1977. In addition, he was employed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for six years.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.

He was the husband of the late Helen G. Gitschier, who died on Dec. 5, 1994.

Survivors include three sons, Robert T. Gitschier of Dover, James J. Gitschier of Dover, and Richard K. Gitschier of Portsmouth; five daughters, Helen C. Gitschier of Dover, Jane G. Morency of Chelmsford, Mass., Nancy M. Gitschier of Newfields, Marie G. Bartlett of Dover, and Carol C. Gitschier of Greenville, N.C.; two brothers, Herman Gitschier of Dover and Edward Gitschier of Dover; one sister, Margaret Malone of Dover; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, John Gitschier, and a sister, Elizabeth McAdam.

GITSCHIER - Robert T. "Lefty" Gitschier, 80, of Dover, died Sept. 26, 2000. Relatives and friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with the Rev. John Poirer, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the charity of one's choice.

Donald J. Butler

HAMPTON - Donald J. Butler, 53, of 8 Jeffrey Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at the Exeter Hospital.

Born March 8, 1947, in Troy, N.Y., he was the son of Elizabeth (Alward) Butler of Clifton Park, N.Y., and the late Leander Butler.

He was a graduate of Shenendehowa Regional High School in Elnora, N.Y. He graduated Salem State College, Salem, Mass., with a bachelor's degree in business.

He resided in New York for most of his life, moving to Boston and Virginia before moving to Hampton in 1982.

He was an employee of the U.S. Treasury Department in Andover, Mass., for the past 26 years, most recently working as an audit manager.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was an active member of the Hampton Youth Association, serving as the past president; and was also the basketball commissioner for several years, coaching basketball, baseball and soccer.

He was the husband of Heidi H. Butler for 27 years.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include two sons, Jonathan Butler and Jeffrey Butler, both of Hampton; a daughter, Kate Butler of Hampton; one brother, William Butler of Woodside, Calif.; one sister, Leeann Warren of Schenectady, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Bruce Butler.

BUTLER - Donald J. Butler, 53, of Hampton, died Sept. 24, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hampton Youth Association, PO Box 81, Hampton, NH 03843. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Earl Goodwin Laxson

AMESBURY, Mass. - Earl Goodwin Laxson, 88, of 23 Greenwood St., Amesbury, died Tuesday Sept. 26, 2000 at Anna Jacques Hospital.

Born May 9, 1912, in Manchester, he was the son of the late Clinton G. and Fannie M. (Goodwin) Laxson.

He attended Amesbury High School and was a machinist for the Bailey Corp. He was a member of the men's club of the Union Congregational Church, Amesbury; and the Warren Lodge, A.F. & A.M.

He was the husband of Evelyn D. (Earley) Laxson, for 64 years.

In addition to his wife survivors include one daughter, Carol M. Burke and her husband, Harold, of Amesbury; one grandson, Donald Burke and his wife, Christine, of Amesbury; four great-grandchildren, Tara, Scott, Erik and Brittany Burke, all of Amesbury; one great-great-grandson, Bailey; one niece; a grandnephew, Russell Clifford of Amesbury; and several cousins in the Portsmouth area.

LAXSON - Earl G. Laxson, 88, of 23 Greenwood St., Amesbury, died Sept. 26, 2000 in Newburyport. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury. Calling hours at the funeral home will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday and 10-11 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury. Memorial contributions may be made to the Earl G. Laxson Memorial Fund of Union Congregational Church, PO Box 377, Amesbury, MA 01913.

Lewis J. Hull

STRATHAM - Lewis J. Hull, 92, of Stratham died Friday Sept. 22, 2000, at the VA Hospital in Manchester after a period of prolonged illness.

Born July 28, 1908, in Hartney, Manitoba, Canada, he was the son of the Rev. John David and Estella Wynans (Lent) Hull.

He graduated from Leominster High School and attended Rensselear Polytechnic Institute. He had a scholarship to Guilmant Organ School in New York City and the New England Conservatory in Boston. He received a bachelor's degree in music and a master's degree from Boston University, and was an organ student of E. Power Biggs.

He held the position of organist and director of music in several churches including St. Paul's in Newburyport, Second Congregational in W. Boxford, St. Michael's in Milton, and All Saints in West Newbury.

He taught piano and organ lessons privately and at the Brooks School in North Andover.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a medical supply officer on a Liberty ship carrying supplies to Wales and returning the wounded from France.

He retired in 1983 from the North Andover school system where he had been director of library services.

He had resided in Stratham the past six years, moving from West Newbury, where he had resided more than 40 years.

He was the husband of Geraldine (Morgan) Hull of Stratham, for 52 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Geoffrey Hull of Georgetown, Mass.; a daughter, Heather Hull Colby of Newburyport, Mass.; and a grandson, Justin Blanchard of Exeter.

He was predeceased by his brother, Williston E. Hull.

HULL - Lewis J. Hull, 92, of Stratham, died Sept. 22, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3 from All Saints Church in West Newbury, Mass.. Private burial will be at the Bridge Street Cemetery in West Newbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Portsmouth-Derry Home Health and Hospice Services, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H.
