Catherine C. Merchant

SEABROOK - Catherine C. Merchant, 80, of 698 Lafayette Road, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born March 28, 1920, in Seabrook, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Melissa E. (Dow) Carter. She resided several years in Amesbury before moving to Hampton Falls in the mid-1950s, where she lived until returning to Seabrook in 1994.

She worked 40 years as the office manager for Standard Plumbing and Heating of Portsmouth, retiring in 1982. She and her husband also operated the Idle Anvil Antiques Shop from their home in Amesbury and Hampton Falls.

Mrs. Merchant was a 1938 graduate of Amesbury High School.

Her husband, Donald Merchant, predeceased her in 1985, and her sisters Irene Merrill and Carlene Perusse had also predeceased her.

Family members include her sister Leona Papoulias of Salisbury; her brother, Oliver Carter, and his wife, Caddie, of Seabrook; a niece, Priscilla Marshall of Seabrook; and several nieces and nephews.

MERCHANT - Catherine C. Merchant, 80, of 698 Lafayette Road, Seabrook, died Sept. 25, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be in the West View Cemetery, Hampton Falls.

Philip G. Marcous

PORTSMOUTH - Philip G. Marcous, 84, died at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth on Sept. 24, 2000.

Born March 16, 1916, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Joseph N. and Florence M. (Smith) Marcous.

He attended Portsmouth schools and served in the United States Army during World War II, stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines.

Mr. Marcous is survived by two nieces, Linda P. Marcous of Newbury, Mass., and Carol A. Campbell of New Castle; a nephew, Neil P. Marcous of Mt. Lakes, N.J.; and several grand- and great-nieces and -nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph E. Marcous.

Beverley Anne Ryan Baglivo

SOUTH PORTLAND - Beverley Anne Ryan Baglivo, 64, of Ridgeland Avenue, died Monday, Sept. 25, at a Portland hospital following a long illness.

Born in Portland, she was a daughter of John J. and Gladys Lyman Ryan. Mrs. Baglivo was educated in Portland schools and was a graduate of Portland High School, class of 1954.

Following her graduation, she moved to Eliot, where she lived until 1992 when she returned to the Portland area. Mrs. Baglivo worked as a credit manager in Karten's Jewelry Store and later Scott's Jewelry Store in Portsmouth.

She was a longtime member of the Eliot Advent Church, where she was active as a youth leader.

After moving to Ridgeland Estates, Mrs. Baglivo was an officeholder in the residents' council. She also enjoyed arts and crafts, Gospel music, bingo, cards, eating in restaurants and doing jigsaw puzzles with the ladies of Ridgeland Estates.

Her husband of 33 years, Rupert Baglivo, died in 1992. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Debra Jane Baglivo.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Scott (Risa) Garland of South Portland and Mrs. Scott (Stefanie) Dobben of Gorham; one brother, John J. Ryan Jr. of South Portland; two sisters, Shirley Bartz of Westland, Mich., and Maxine Fickett of South Portland; two grandchildren, Olivia Garland and Sophia Dobben.

BAGLIVO - Beverley Anne Ryan Baglivo, 64, of Ridgeland Avenue, South Portland, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Stroudwater Christian Church, 1520 Westbrook St., Portland. Burial will be at a later date in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot. Donations in her memory may be made to the Rupert Baglivo Memorial Scholarship Fund, 47 Dow Highway, Eliot, ME, 03403.

Frances L. Buxton

KENSINGTON, N.H. - Frances L. Buxton, 90, of 194 Drinkwater Road, passed away Sept. 25, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Aug. 7, 1910, in Exeter, she was the daughter of Robert and Mabel (Hunt) McNeill. She was the widow of Horace F. Buxton, who died in 1978.

After attending local schools, the family moved to Newburyport, Mass., where she graduated in 1929 from Newburyport High School. Following high school, she entered the Danvers State Hospital School of Nursing. She also attended Boston City Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1933. She attended Simmons College, department of nursing, and received a B.S. in 1936. She also attended St. Anselm's College in Manchester, the University of N.H. and Boston University, in preparation for becoming a faculty member of the Exeter School of Practical Nursing, now known as the N.H. Tech. College in Stratham. She was the director of the practical nursing program.

After retirement in 1973, she and her husband and son wintered in Titusville, Fla., where she aided in developing a program for the mentally retarded. She was president of the Helping Hands Organization and developed the guidelines for the Hospice of St. Francis. After returning from Florida, she was an active member of the Family Support Council, Community Developmental Services of Region Eight, in Portsmouth.

She was a member of the Kensington Congregational Church, the Kensington Historical Society and the Friends of the Kensington Library. She was inducted as a charter member of Sigma Theta Tau of Simmons College in 1990 and also Sigma Theta Tau International, of which she was still an active member.

The mother of 12 children, she was predeceased by two sons, Robert in 1973 and Anthony in 1996, and a daughter, Nancy, in 1957.

She is survived by nine children: three daughters, Dorothy B. Milbury of Exeter, Janet R. Buxton of Kensington, and Elizabeth Ann Buxton of Ohio; six sons, Richard E. Buxton, William G. Buxton and Stanley F. Buxton, all of Kensington, Donald R. Buxton of Brentwood, N.H., Kenneth B. Buxton of Nottingham, N.H., and Jonathan D. Buxton of Antigua, West Indies; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Wallace E. McNeill, in 1994.

BUXTON - Frances L. Buxton, 90, of 194 Drinkwater Road in Kensington, N.H., passed away Sept. 25, 2000 at Exeter Hospital. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Kensington Congregational Church. The Rev. Dr. David Lennox will officiate at the service. Burial will follow at the Buxton Family Burial Grounds in Kensington. Remembrances may be made to either the Kensington Congregational Church, 128 Amesbury Road, Kensington, NH 03833; the Kensington Historical Society, c/o Warren Clark, 8 North Road, Kensington, NH 03833; or the Great Bay Training Center, 2061 Woodbury Ave., Newington, NH 03801-2893.

Earl Goodwin Laxson

AMESBURY, MASS. - Earl Goodwin Laxson, 88, of 23 Greenwood St., Amesbury, died Tuesday at Anna Jaques Hospital. He was the husband of Evelyn D. (Earley) Laxson.

He was born May 9, 1912, the son of Clinton G. and Fannie M. (Goodwin) Laxson.

He attended Amesbury High School and was a machinist for the Bailey Corporation. He was a member of the men's club of the Union Congregational Church, Amesbury, and the Warren Lodge, A.F.&A.M.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Carol M. Burke, and her husband, Harold, of Amesbury; four grandchildren, Tara, Scott, Erik and Brittany Burke, all of Amesbury; one greatgreat-grandson, Bailey; several cousins; and a niece.

LAXSON - Earl Goodwin Laxson, 88, of 23 Greenwood St., Amesbury, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Anna Jaques Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday at the Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury. Calling hours at the funeral home will be 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, and 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Friday. Interment will follow in Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury. Memorial contributions may be made to the Earl G. Laxson Memorial Fund of Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 377, Amesbury, MA 01913.

Major Robert J. Fitzgerald

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Major Robert J. Fitzgerald, USAF (Ret.), 76, of 13 Van Buren Ave., were held Monday. Sept. 25, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church by the Rev. Agapit Jean. Readings were given by Beverly Hargen and Katherine Sweeney. The Eucharistic Gifts were presented by Joan and Rod Foy. The eulogy was delivered by Joseph Hargen, and the poem "High Flight" was read by T.J. Hargen. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with Fr. Jean conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Edward G. Fitzgerald Jr., Michael Fitzgerald, Don Barnard, Michael Cooley, Kenneth Cooley and Joseph Hargen. Full military honors were provided by a detachment from Hanscom Air Force Base, and the flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to his wife "Del" Fitzgerald.

Theresa Electa Thompson

PORTSMOUTH - Theresa Electa (Strout) Thompson, 89, of 188 Jones Ave., died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1911 in Wales, Maine, she was the daughter of Frank Edward and Ethel (Libby) Strout. She attended school in Wales and graduated from Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, Maine.

For 42 years she lived in Lewiston, Maine where she worked for the Lewiston Daily Sun and the Lewiston Evening Journal, now the Lewiston Sun-Journal.

In 1972, she retired and married Roger R. Thompson of Kittery where they lived until 1989 when they moved to Portsmouth.

She was a member of North Congregational Church in Portsmouth. While living in Lewiston she was active in the Lewiston United Baptist Church, the Lewiston-Auburn YWCA and Fidelity Rebekah Lodge of which she was a Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy President.

Survivors include two nephews, Russell L. Strout of Greene, Maine and Brian L. Strout of Moore, S. C.; a sister-in-law, Eugenia Strout of Greene, Maine; two great nieces, Jenny Rose and Shelly Strout; one great nephew, Russell L. Strout Jr. and a great-great niece, Emily Rose.

THOMPSON - Theresa E. Thompson, 89, of 188 Jones Avenue, Portsmouth, died Sept. 25, 2000. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. No visiting hours. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Donald J. Butler

HAMPTON - Donald J. Butler, 53, of 8 Jeffrey Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000 at Exeter Hospital.

Born March 8, 1947 in Troy, N.Y., he was the son of Elizabeth (Alward) Butler of Clifton Park, N.Y. and the late Leander Butler.

He was a graduate of Shenendehowa Regional High School in Elnora, N.Y. He graduated from Salem State College, Salem, Mass., with a bachelor's degree in business.

He resided in New York for most of his life, moving to Boston and Virginia before moving to Hampton in 1982. He was an employee for the U.S. Treasury Department in Andover, Mass. for the past 26 years and most recently worked as an audit manager.

He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was a very active member of the Hampton Youth Association serving as the past president, was also the basketball commissioner for several years and he coached basketball, baseball and soccer.

He was the husband of Heidi H. Butler for 27 years.

In addition to his wife and mother, family members include two sons, Jonathan Butler and Jeffrey Butler both of Hampton; a daughter, Kate Butler of Hampton; one brother, William Butler of Woodside, Calif., one sister, Leeann Warren of Schenectady, N.Y. and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Bruce Butler.

BUTLER - Donald J. Butler, 53, of 8 Jeffrey Drive, Hampton, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be at the High Street Cemetery in Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Hampton Youth Association, PO Box 81, Hampton, NH 03843.

Timothy L. Donovan

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. - Timothy L. Donovan, 84, of San Clemente, Calif., died Sept. 23, 2000.

Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Timothy Donovan and Elisabeth Keefe Donovan and attended St. Patrick's School and Portsmouth High School.

He graduated from Holy Cross College in 1938 and earned his law degree from Boston College Law School.

He served in the U. S. Navy and was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in 1946. He was a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1947 to 1968. He had a second career as a trustee in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in San Bernardino until his retirement in 1996.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of The Holy Family Adoption Agency of Los Angeles, the San Bernardino Rotary Club and of St. Edward's Church in Dana Point. He was also a member and former chairman of the Orange County Chapter of Former FBI Agents and member and former president of the San Bernardino Catholic Social Service.

The Shamrock Club of San Bernardino honored him as the Irishman of the Year in 1982.

He was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Mary Ellen Ferguson Donovan.

He is survived by his son, Timothy L. Donovan Jr. of San Clemente; his daughter, Marnet Donovan Hazard, of Westport, Conn.; two sisters, Katherine Tilton Peveler of Austin, Texas and Elizabeth Pollock of Midlothian, Va.; his grandchildren, Jarrod Hazard, Donovan Hazard and Deirdre Hazard of Westport, and several nieces and nephews.

He was an inspiration to his family and always spoke fondly of his youth in Portsmouth.

Thelma Flinn

ELIOT - Thelma (Damren) Flinn, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at the home of her daughter after a brief illness.

She was born May 18, 1900, in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of the late Herbert Milton Damren and Emma Etta (Dunn) Damren.

She taught kindergarten in Melrose, Mass., until she married Waldo Raymond Flinn in 1924. They lived in Scarsdale, N.Y. until 1966, when they retired to Newport Beach, Calif., to be near their daughters and grandchildren. In 1978, they moved to Evergreen Drive in Hampton, and later to Portsmouth.

She is survived by a daughter, Judith Flinn Taylor and her husband Tapley of Eliot; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Her husband died in 1984 and her daughter Barbara (Flinn) Small died in 1972.

Interment will be private at a later date.

Robert A. Moebus

PORTSMOUTH - Robert A. Moebus, 84, of 906 White Cedar Blvd. passed away Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in the Bronx in New York City on July 6, 1916, he had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1945.

He was retired from the National Gypsum Company as a mechanical engineer. He established and developed the Pleasant Point Drive neighborhood in the 1950s.

The oldest living member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club, he was a former member of the Board of Directors and was awarded a life membership in 1985.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ruth (Boyan) Moebus; one daughter, Robin M. Crosby and her husband, Bob, of York, Maine and several nieces and nephews.

MOEBUS - Robert A. Moebus, 84, of 906 White Cedar Blvd., Portsmouth, died Sept. 24, 2000. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Memorials may be made to A Safe Place, P.O. Box 674, Portsmouth, NH 03802-0674.

Margaret Burnett Sawyer

PORTSMOUTH - Margaret Burnett Sawyer, 84, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000 after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 31, 1916 in Southboro, Mass., she was the daughter of George H. and Georgia (Mann) Burnett. She resided in New Castle for the last 21 years, where she retired with her late husband, Roland D. Sawyer, who was a master at St. Mark's School for more than 30 years.

Many St. Marker's will remember "Madge" for her years of service to the school and her kindness to many schoolboys.

She was predeceased in death by her brother, Robert M. Burnett of Rye. She is survived by her only son, John M. Callaway of Copenhagen, Denmark.

SAWYER - Margaret Burnett Sawyer, 84, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000 in Portsmouth. A graveside service will be held at the Burnett family cemetery in Southboro at an undisclosed date in October. Those wishing to attend can contact St. Mark's School.
