Ruth M. Durgin

KITTERY - Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth M. (Wortman) Durgin, 74, of 26 Cromwell St., were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday. The Rev. William Gardei officiated.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, at the convenience of the family.

FELLOWS - George W. (Babe) Fellows Sr., 87, formerly of Kittery, died July 11, 2000. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Orchard Grove Cemetery. The Rev. George Wardwell of Kittery Point Baptist Church will officiate. As per Mr. Fellows' request, his body was cremated by Jordon Funeral Home of Centre, Ala. In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to shelters for battered women.

Rachel J. Evilsizer

DRESDEN, Ohio - Rachel J. "Joan of Arc" Evilsizer, 65, of Dresden, died at 11:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at her home.

She was born May 22, 1935, in Waterville, Maine, to the late Barnaby and Violet Dulac. She was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Zanesville.

She was the wife of Richard L. Evilsizer whom she married July 25, 1953 in Portsmouth, N.H.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Allan (Linda) Evilsizer of Zanesville; one daughter, Twila G. (Tom) Houston of Columbus; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Marlene (John) Reilly of Eliot, Nancy (John) Tobin of Newmarket; stepfather, Francis Hanlon of Portsmouth; and many dear and close friends.

In addition to her parents and her grandparents, a granddaughter, Chastity Lee Evilsizer and a great granddaughter, Katelyn Evilsizer, preceded her in death.

EVILSIZER - Rachel J. (Dulac) Evilsizer, 65, of Dresden, Ohio, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Sept. 11, at the Vensil & Orr Funeral Home in Dresden. A rosary service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 12 at St. Thomas Church with Fr. Michael DeTemple, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Mattingly Settlement Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Genesis; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. George Edward Skinner

BURLINGTON, Mass. - George Edward Skinner 88, of 66 Winn St., Burlington, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born in Boston on March 28, 1912, he was the son of Nicholas and Mary (Bradley) Skinner and had been a longtime resident of Burlington.

He served in the Army during World War II as a musician in the Army Band in Europe. An electrician by trade, his love of music continued through his entire life as he played both professionally and privately.

He was the husband of the late Grace (Basile) Skinner.

Survivors include his daughters Lorraine Soukup of Kittery and Cheryl Bradley of Phoenix; two grandchildren, Kristin Ndiaye of Atlanta and Jason Soukup of New York City. A sister Susan Bibeau of Worcester, also survives.

SKINNER - George E. Skinner, 88, of Burlington, Mass., died in Portsmouth, Sept. 11, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday at St. Margaret Church in Burlington, Mass. Friends may visit with the family 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., Friday at the Edward Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., in Burlington. Memorial donations may be made to the Edgewood Centre Recreation Fund, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Local arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Louise I. Gobbi Parker

PORTSMOUTH - Louise I. Gobbi Parker, 75, formerly of 673 South St. died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at the SunBridge Nursing Home in Rochester.

Born July 7, 1925, she was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth.

In retirement, she enjoyed gardening and volunteered extensively with the Salvation Army, RSVP, the Edgewood Centre, the Rockingham County Nursing Home and in local schools. She was a member of the Kittery Grange.

She is survived by two brothers, Jeffrey Armitage of Ohio and Fred Merrithew of New York; and five sisters, Pamela Carponi of Florida, Glenda Tarr of California, Janice Neal of Maine, Lucy Pirini of Maine, and Jessie Shook of Michigan.

She was predeceased by her mother, Jessie B. Armitage of Portsmouth; two sisters, Mary Cormier of Maine and Gloria Buckley of Ohio; and her brother, George Merrithew of Connecticut.

She had six children: Gladys M. Pilcher of Eliot, Robert J. Gobbi of Jacksonville, Fla., Mary P. Noucas and her husband, Jim of Portsmouth, David D. Gobbi and his wife, Beverly of Newmarket, Jason Parker and his wife, Veronica of Rochester, and Stephen R. Parker and his wife, Diane of Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

PARKER - Louise I. Gobbi Parker, 75, formerly of 673 South St., Portsmouth, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000. Calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Farrell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 14, at Saint John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the Salvation Army, 15 Middle St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Thurston C. Briley

YORK - Thurston C. Briley, 76, of Chases Pond Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Dec. 11, 1923, in York, he was the son of Joseph A. and Julia (Moulton) Briley. After graduating from York High School, he entered the Air Force and served his country during World War II.

He was the owner of Groundnut Hill Acres Inc., in Cape Neddick. He had been a heavy equipment operator at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years.

He attended the York Street Baptist Church and was a member of the Boardman-Ellis Post No. 6977 in Cape Neddick; a member of the American Legion and a member of the York Fish and Game Club.

He enjoyed growing blueberry bushes as well as tending to his fruit tree orchard. He had his own pilot's license and enjoyed hunting.

He was the husband of Ruth (Emery) Briley of York for 50 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Beth) Crowell of Cape Neddick and Mrs. Gregory (Lynn) Noyes of Amesbury, Mass.; a brother, Henry M. Briley of Cape Neddick; a sister, Katherine Norton of Cape Neddick; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother Joseph Briley Jr., who died in 1977, and by a sister, Florence Alley, who died in 1997.

BRILEYM - Thurston C. Briley of Chases Pond Road died Sept. 12, 2000, at York Hospital. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in the York Street Baptist Church, York Street, York. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Volunter Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME, 03909.

Priscilla Y. Murphy

HAMPTON - Priscilla Y. Murphy, 71, of 29 Fairfield Drive, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at her home.

She was born in Manchester, Dec. 19, 1928, the daughter of the late Walter and Hazel (Young) Shirley.

She had resided in Hampton since 1961. After raising her family, she worked for the former Clipper Home of Portsmouth as a CNA for 14 years, retiring in 1997.

She attended the United Methodist Church and her greatest achievement was the love and kindness she gave to her family.

She was the wife of Clarence G. Murphy for 50 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include five children, Sandra Golden of Exeter, Dawn Spooner and her husband Stuart of North Hampton, Douglas Murphy and his wife Barbara of Quincy, Mass., Terrence Murphy and his wife Laura of Barrington, Michael Clouthier and his wife Sandra of Exeter, one sister, Ann Toll of Framingham, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Lisa Chadwick, Marlene Walker-Golden, Stuart M. Spooner, Patrick Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Grady Murphy, Griffin Murphy, Lee Clouthier, Ben Clouthier; two great-grandchildren, Mykel and Marc Chadwick; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Lord Earle

ROLLINSFORD - Helen Lord Earle, 102, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Peabody Home in Franklin.

She was born March 26, 1898 in Salmon Falls, N.H., the daughter of Charles N. and Lena (Bouley) Lord.

She was active in town meetings in Salmon Falls and Rollinsford and the N.H. Extension. She was a member of Sarah Jewett Chapter #176 of the Order of Eastern Star in South Berwick and Rebekah Lodge No. 20 of South Berwick. She was a past member of the Federated Church of South Berwick and was a member of Bow United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Garden Club in Rollinsford and volunteered for the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts in Rollinsford. On her 100th birthday the town of Rollinsford declared March 26, 1998 Helen Lord Earle Day.

She was the wife of Warren N. Earle for 53 years. He died in 1972.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley E. Davis of Andover, N.H.; four grandchildren, Gwenn Davis of Concord, Earle Davis of Bow, Melody Earle and Scott Earle, both of So. Berwick; six great grandchildren and several nieces.

She was predeceased by a son, Leigh P. Earle, who died in 1996.

EARLE - Helen Lord Earle, 102, of Peabody Home in Franklin, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday at New Town Cemetery in Rollinsford with the Rev. William Keeffe officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Peabody Home, 24 Peabody Place, Franklin, NH 03235 or to Mountain Crest Home, 26 Baldwin St., Franklin, NH 03235. The Bennett Funeral Home of Concord is in charge of arrangements.

Kennard Miller Palfrey Jr.

SEAL ROCK, Ore. - Capt. Kennard Miller Palfrey Jr., U.S.C.G. retired, 66, of 860 N.W. Estate Drive, Seal Rock, Ore., died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, N. H.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 11, 1933, the son of Kennard M. Palfrey Sr., of Rye, N.H. and the late Barbara (McNeil) Palfrey.

He was a 1951 graduate of Portsmouth High School. He attended the Admiral Billard Academy. In 1956 he received his bachelor of science degree from the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. He then received his master's degree in Oceanography from the University of Washington in Seattle.

He served in the Coast Guard during the Vietnam War, retiring in 1981, as a captain and as director of the Oceanography Department in Washington, D.C. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, he was employed for Oregon State University as the Marine Superintendent of the Ocean Research Ship Wecoma, retiring after 14 years in 1996. He was responsible for starting the Marine Science Postgraduate Program at the Training Center, which is in conjunction with the Long Island University.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, N.H.; member of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F and AM in Portsmouth; past master of Alsea Bay Masonic Lodge No. 203 in Waldport, Ore.; member and 32 degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Salem, Ore; member of Lincoln County Shrine Club; Al Kader Shrine Temple in Portland, Ore; Order of DeMolay N.H. Preceptory where he had received the Degree of Chevalier and the Legion of Honor; Top of the World Masonic Club in Thule, Greenland; BPOE Elks Lodge No. 2105 in Newport, Ore; American Legion Post 115, Newport, Ore.; Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 411 in Newport, Ore.; Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association; The Retired Officers Association; Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association; AARP; Newport Loyalty Day Association; board member of the Seal Rock Rural Fire Protection District; member of the American Philatelic Society; American Topical Association; Lighthouse Stamp Society; and the Boy Scouts of America, National Eagle Scout Association.

He was the husband of Jean (Burr) Palfrey.

Besides his wife, whom he married on Nov. 22, 1958, and his father of Rye, N.H., survivors include two daughters, Kimberly P. Wood and her husband, Richard M. Wood Jr. of Dumfries, Va., and Keryn P. Newman and her husband, Phillip G. Newman of Sheppardstown, W. Va.; four grandchildren, Richard M. Wood III of Dumfries, Va., and Tyler Newman, Melissa Newman and Jake Newman, all of Sheppardstown, W.Va.; two brothers, David J. Palfrey and his wife, Judy of Franklin, N.H. and Robert C. Palfrey and his wife, Deborah of Stratham, N.H.; several nieces and nephews.

PALFREY - Capt. Kennard Miller Palfrey Jr., U.S.C.G. Ret., 66, of 860 N.W. Estate Drive, Seal Rock, Ore., died Sept. 9, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, at the North Church Chapel, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth, N.H., with Masonic services by St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F and AM. Friends invited. There will be no visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Donations in memory of Capt. Palfrey may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Portland, OR, Unit, 3101 S. W. Frank A. Bennett

LEBANON, Maine - Frank A. Bennett, 82, of Lebanon, Maine, formerly of Eliot, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at his home, following a long illness.

Born Aug. 10, 1918, in Solon, Maine, he was the son of the late George . and Myrtie E. (Jaoquin) Bennett. He attended schools in Solon, and worked in the shoe manufacturing business for years.

He was in the Army, having served in Central Europe during World War II. He was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was a member of the Pittsfield, Maine American Legion and the Pittsfield Maine Grange.

He enjoyed nature and the great outdoors. He was an avid trapper.

He married Virginia Louise Fernald Bond Bennett in 1979, and lived in Eliot.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Keith Bennett of Niceville, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Belair of York; his stepchildren, John Bond of South Berwick, Mrs. Beverly Ellis of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Mrs. Carol Tugan of Vestaburg, Mich.; Richard Bond of Eliot, Mrs. Joyce Rarrell of Preston, Conn.; and Mrs. Norma Jean Short of Lebanon, Maine.

He was predeceased by a son, Mylan Bennett.

He is also survived and will be greatly missed by his many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

BENNETT - Frank A. Bennett, 82, of Lebanon, Maine, and formerly of Eliot, died Monday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. Dr. David Avery of the Eliot Congregational Church will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 6. A private family burial will take place at a later date in Village Cemetery in Pittsfield, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Frances Elizabeth Lynch

DURHAM - Frances Elizabeth "Betty" Lynch, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Helga's Place, where she made her home. She was the youngest daughter of Landon and Lelia (Rousseau) Boyle, and was born in Hennepin Township, Ill., on Oct. 10, 1905.

She attended Swaney and Granville schools and was a lifetime alumni member of the University of Illinois.

For two years she worked as a bookkeeper for B.F. Goodrich Company in Chicago.

On Dec. 25, 1928, she married Wayne Lynch of Tonica, Ill., and Schenectady, N.Y. Two children were born of this union, Douglas Craig Lynch, now deceased, and Judith Karen Doe.

She leaves her daughter, Judith Doe and her husband, Peter, of York; a grandson, Douglas Peter Doe and his wife, Lynne, of Oklahoma City; a granddaughter, Kimberly Renee Doe of York; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Geraldine Boyle of Henry, Ill.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

LYNCH - Frances Elizabeth (Betty) Lynch, of Helga's Place, Durham, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000. Private services will be held in Hennepin, Ill. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, N.H. 03833. The Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, is assisting with local arrangements.

J. Arthur Emond

NEWMARKET - J. Arthur Emond, 90, formerly of Spring Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at the Rockingham Nursing Home, Brentwood, where he had resided for the past three years.

Born April 12, 1910 in Newmarket, he was the son of J. Napoleon and M. Hedwidge (Michaud) Emond.

He was a member of the Newmarket Band for many years, and a former member of the New Market Militia.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Newmarket.

For many years he was employed in the local textile industry. He worked as a weaver and loom fixer for Newmarket Manufacturing. Co., Rockingham Silk Co., and Pioneer Manufacturing Co.,all in Newmarket, and Exeter Manufacturing Co. He also worked at Exeter Academy for two years.

He loved his family and will be greatly missed by them.

He was the husband of F. Regina (Morrissette) Emond for 59 years. She died in 1997.

Survivors include one son, Richard Arthur Emond and his wife, Ruth, of Chicopee, Mass., one daughter, Theresa E. Dube and her husband, Donald, of Newmarket; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leo Emond of Brentwood, Romeo Emond of Portsmouth, and Armand Emond of Northwood; two sisters, Jeannette Hamilton of Newmarket, and Lillian Baillargeon of Exeter; and several nieces and nephews.

EMOND - J. Arthur Emond, 90, formerly of Spring Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the Kent and Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday from St. Mary's Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket. SPOFFORD - Mrs. Virginia (Swain) Spofford, 76, of 7 Dearborn Ave., Hampton, N.H., passed away peacefully on Sept. 12, 2000. TANNER - Cecelia Mallock Tanner of Seabrook Beach, died Sept. 11, 2000. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook.
