Leavitt E. Moulton

NEWINGTON - Leavitt E. Moulton, 89, husband of Mildred (Gifford) Moulton of 56 Nimble Hill Road, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at his home.

Born Oct. 27, 1910, in North Hampton, he was the son of the late Erwin B. and Maude A. (Dalton) Moulton. He attended North Hampton schools, Hampton Academy, and was a graduate of New Hampton School, Class of 1928. He attended Bentley Business School and was a graduate of Essex Agricultural School in Hathorne, Mass.

He moved from Beverly, Mass., to Newington in 1941 and became a farm manager for Louis de Rochemont until 1951, when he went into business for himself in landscaping and grounds maintenance, retiring in 1975.

For 32 years he was treasurer of the town of Newington and the Newington School District, and held various town offices.

He was a life member of Budleigh Masonic Lodge in Beverly, Mass., since 1934; and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover, Consistory 32 degree of Nashua and Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord; past director of Jesters; and past president of the Portsmouth Shrine Club.

He was the husband of Mildred Moulton for 64 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Suzanne M. Russell and her husband, Richard, of Hyde Park, N.Y.; two grandsons, Richard Leavitt Russell and his wife, Lillian, of Sterling, Va., and David Russell and his wife, Rose, of Earle, N.J.; four great-grandchildren; two half-brothers, Emery D. Fogg of San Leandro, Calif., and Hervey J. Fogg of Orland Park, Ill.; and five nieces.

MOULTON - Mr. Leavitt E. Moulton, 89, of 56 Nimble Hill Road, Newington, died Aug. 31, 2000. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with a memorial visitation one hour prior to services from 1 to 2 p.m. Friends invited. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Mr. Moulton may be made to the Newington Family Scholarship Fund, c/o Newington Town Offices, Newington, NH 03801; or to Shriners Hospital for Children, Boston Unit (Burns), c/o Memorial Gift Coordinator, Bektash Shriners, P.O. Elsie M. Howe

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - Elsie M. Howe, 88, of Ocean Avenue, died Aug. 31, 2000, at Southern Maine Medical Center, Biddeford, after a brief illness.

She was the widow of Frank I Howe, who died in 1988.

Born July 4, 1912, in Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Gustav and Alma (Oberg) Johnson, and attended Walpole, Mass., schools, and Fisher Junior College in Boston.

She was employed as a secretary for the Boston Genealogy Society.

After moving to Maine, she operated Mrs. Howe's Guest House in Kennebunkport for more than 40 years. During the winter, she and her family would travel with her husband when he worked for the U.S. Geological Survey. For many years she wintered in Englewood, Fla.

She attended the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport. An active craftsperson, she enjoyed needlework, rug hooking, and painting, and recently showed her artwork at the Heartwood Art Shows.

Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Wheeler of Mattapoisett, Mass, Janet Howe of Kittery, and Carol McLeod of Cape Porpoise, Maine; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

HOWE - Elsie M. Howe, 88, of Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport, Maine, died Aug. 31, 2000. She was the widow of Frank I. Howe, who died in 1988. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011; Sweetser Children's Services, 75 John Roberts Road, South Portland, ME 04106; or to the Arthritis Foundation of Maine, 201 Main St., Suite No. 6, Westbrook, ME 04092.

Paul E. Goss

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Paul E. Goss, 70, of Punta Gorda, formerly of Kittery, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000.

He was born April 4, 1930, in Portsmouth, and moved to Punta Gorda nine years ago.

He was an under-sea cable inspector for AT&T Communications.

He was a member of he Masonic Lodge, Maine; and Coastal Cruisers Bicycle Club, North Port, Fla.

He was the husband of Pauline Goss.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Joanne Rammer of Portsmouth, Jean Treacy of Portsmouth, and Jan Wood of Islamoranda, Fla.; six grandchildren, Bethanie Hull, Heidi Rammer, Karyn Rammer, Rebekah Alvord, Benjamin Alvord and Conor Treacy; and one brother, Arthur Goss of Kittery.

GOSS - Paul E. Goss, 70, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Kittery, died Aug. 26, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 5, 2000, at the Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 22107 Elmira Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952.

George W. Dow

PORTSMOUTH - George W. Dow, 93, widower of Helen (Carkin) Dow of 928 South St., died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Westbrook, Maine., on Feb. 22, 1907, the son of the late Joseph L. and Elizabeth (Caldwell) Dow.

He was a graduate of Morse High School Class of 1925 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Before his retirement, he was employed as a carpenter for Landers & Griffin Construction Co. He was a friend of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth.

Survivors include three sons, Louis Dow and his wife Beverly of Greenland, Harold Dow and his wife Jacqueline of Portsmouth, and Ronald Dow and his wife Ramona of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five children, George R. Dow, Joyce M. Kent, Lt. Col. Charles W. Dow, USMC Ret., Phillip W. Dow and Richard S. Dow.

DOW - George W. Dow, 93, of 928 South St., Portsmouth, died Aug. 29, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with visiting one hour prior to funeral service. Friends invited. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

William J. Hersey

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for William J. "Wink" Hersey, 79, of 1761 Lafayette Road, were held Aug. 22. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church by the Rev. Gary Lord. Organist was Jean Goss and soloist was Janet Green. The Eucharistic gifts were presented by Jessica and Mark Dzbnski.

Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery with Father Lord conducting the committal. Bearers were Joshua Hersey, Ryan Hersey, Shaine Hersey, Jeremy Hersey, Thomas Hersey, Richard Hersey and Donald Hersey. Military honors were provided by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy with the flag, which draped the casket, being presented to his daughter, Kathleen Hersey. Taps were sounded by Theodore Blood III.

Dorothy R. Lane

PORTLAND, Maine - Dorothy R. Lane, 78, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at her home at Chandlers Wharf, after a long illness. She was formerly of the Macintosh Condominiums in Portsmouth, N.H.

Born in Meredith, N.H., she was the daughter of Earl and M. Eunice Perkins Lovering.

She was a graduate of Shelburne Falls Academy.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, Albion F. Lane, died in 1983.

She is survived by one daughter, Paula Lane of Yarmouth; two sons, Ross and Keith, both of Portland; one brother, Richard Lovering of Readsboro, Vt.; one sister, Priscilla Hall of Hampton, N.H.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be announced. Arrangements by Independent Death Care of Maine, Cornish.

Frederick B. Sandford

KITTERY— Mr. Frederick B. Sandford, 79, the husband of Pauline T. "Polly" (Hoitt) Sandford, of 115 Dennett Road, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth on May 2, 1921, he was the son of Francis X. and Eleanor (LeDrew) Sandford.

He was a member of Portsmouth High School Class of 1939, and was employed for over 30 years with the First National grocery stores, retiring as assistant manager.

He was very active with the I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) of N.H.; he was past grand and secretary of the Osgood Lodge No. 48 of Portsmouth; past grand patriarch of the Grand Encampment of N.H.; and was past president of Department Council P.M. of N.H.

Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Beverly Dufresne and Barbara Rothstein, both of Kittery; three grandchildren, Debra McNally of Hallowell, Maine, Rebecca Eloi of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; and James Albies of Portland, Maine; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor Conner of Rye; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert, Harold and Bradley Sandford, and one sister, Virginia Pal.

Eloise Walton

LEE - Eloise (MacRae) Walton, 90, of Old Concord Turnpike, and formerly of Durham, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Dover Rehab and Living Center.

Born Aug. 20, 1910, in Barrington, she was the daughter of William and Addie May (Canney) Palmer. She was a graduate of Dover High School and had formerly lived on the Dover Road in Durham.

She was secretary to the dean of students at the University of New Hampshire for many years. She received the I.F.C. Good Citizenship Award 1954-55 from UNH.

She was a member of the Community Church of Durham and the Silver Squares of Durham. She enjoyed dancing and shuffleboard.

She was the widow of Edmund Walton who died in 1999, and was also predeceased by husbands Gerard Picard in 1988 and John MacRae in 1973.

Survivors include two sons, Richard L. Langlois of Dover and Robert W. Langlois of Turnersville, N.J.; a daughter, Joyce Terrio of Lee, with whom she made her home; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother John R. Palmer of Dover; and several nephews.

WALTON - Eloise (MacRae) Walton, 90, of Old Concord Turnpike, Lee, died Aug. 28, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, with the Rev. Mary Westfall officiating. A visiting hour will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover. Flowers are acceptable. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Community Church of Durham, P.O. Box 310, Durham, N.H. 03824.

Natalie M. Drelick

HAMPTON FALLS - Natalie M. Drelick, 70, of Drinkwater Road, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at Exeter Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born Jan. 19, 1930, in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late Carl A. and Jenny (Kreger) Meyer.

She had been a resident of Hampton Falls since 1932, formerly living in Exeter. She was formerly employed for several years with Lucent Technologies.

She was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1952, and was a member of American Legion Post No. 105 of Kensington.

She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Richard Drelick, who died in 1993.

She is survived by three brothers, Carl Meyer of Cape Cod, Mass., John Meyer of Andover, Mass., and Bill Meyer of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and several nieces and nephews.

DRELICK - Natalie M. Drelick, 70, of Drinkwater Road, Hampton Falls, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000. Calling hours will be Thursday, Aug. 31, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church in Exeter. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the charity of one's choice.

Thomas C. Eldredge

ELIOT - Thomas C. Eldredge, 81, of Dixon Avenue, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at his home. Born in Portsmouth on May 22, 1919, he was the son of Oscar and Mable (McDonnell) Eldredge.

He graduated from Portsmouth High School in the Class of 1937.

He was a resident of Portsmouth and Eliot his entire life. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in New Guinea and the East Indies. He was discharged in 1945.

He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Electrical Shop 51 and the design division as an electrical technician, retiring in October 1977.

He was married to Marion (Nelson) Eldredge for 52 years. Survivors include his widow; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Susan Eldredge of Eliot; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Richard Mills of Beverly, Mass.; two grandchildren, Michael and Laura Eldredge of Eliot; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, John, Walter (Brud), and Neil Eldredge, all of Portsmouth.

ELDREDGE - Thomas C. Eldredge, 81, of Dixon Ave., Eliot, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, Eliot, State Road, Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Daniel R. Holman

PORTSMOUTH - Daniel R. Holman, 42, of Portsmouth, formerly of Stoneham, Mass., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Concord, Mass., on March 23, 1958, he was the beloved son of Herbert W. and Barbara L. (Hart) Holman, of Stoneham.

He was a graduate of Stoneham High School, Class of 1976. He was a resident of Boston before moving to Portsmouth four years ago. He was employed as a chef at the Pier II restaurant in Portsmouth.

In addition to his parents, he was the loving brother of Herb Holman Jr. of Reading, Mass., Lori Smith of Wakefield, Mass., Glenn Holman of Miami Springs, Fla., and Wendy Holman of Reading; and had two nieces and two nephews.

HOLMAN - Daniel R. Holman of Portsmouth and formerly of Stoneham, Mass., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield, Mass., at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

John J. Kelley Jr.

MONMOUTH, Maine - John J. "Jack" Kelley Jr., 78, a resident of 674 Main St., died recently at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he had been a patient for 10 days.

He was born in Haverhill, Mass., on June 14, 1922, the son of John J. Sr. and Alice Carragher Kelley. He was an altar boy at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Norway for 10 years. He was a graduate of Norway High School, Class of 1940.

He served in the U.S. Army as a combat soldier in the European Theater in World War II. He saw action in Belgium, Holland and Germany and was at the Battle of the Bulge. He married Ruth Niskanen of South Paris on Feb. 2, 1947, in Norway. In 1951 he attended Columbia Technical College in Washington, D.C. He also was Scoutmaster for Troop 130 in South Paris.

He worked for several companies in Maine as a mechanical tool designer and retired from the Reece Corp. of Gorham in 1982. He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus of Norway. He was a very active member of the Society of Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartets of America and was a member of the Central Maine Harmony Buoys. He also played golf at Western View Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, of Monmouth; three sons and their wives, Robert and Pam Kelley of Manchester, Peter Kelley and Deborah Regan of Hampton Falls, and Chris and Lucie Kelley of Monmouth; three daughters, Patricia Fournier of Manchester, Catherine Leighton of York, and Miriam and her husband, Tom, "Buck" Hennigar, of North Sebago; two sisters and their husbands, Barbara and Malcolm Bowker of Winslow and Mary and Neil Stults of Lake Como, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.
