Dorothy F. Batchelder

SOUTH BERWICK - Dorothy F. Batchelder, 79, of 118 Agamenticus Road, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at her home after a courageous battle with her illness.

Born in Chicago, on Jan. 11, 1921, she was the daughter of William and Frances (Vincent) Dorr. She was a graduate of the Immaculata High School, Chicago, Class of 1938, and attended the University of New Mexico. She was a former resident of Wells, and Portsmouth, before moving to South Berwick in 1958.

In 1942, during World War II, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES, where she was a telegrapher, and received a meritorious service award. She then went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 27 years, where she was the head of the employment division at the time of her retirement in 1979.

She was a former member and former vice commander of the American Legion Post No. 96 of Portsmouth, a former member and former commander of the American Legion Post No. 67 of Newmarket, and is a member of the Rollinsford American Legion Post No. 47.

She was an active member of St. Michael's Church where she was a former member of the parish council and the Women's Club of the church, and taught catechism classes.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Donald W. Batchelder; four daughters Donna Jane Curtis and her husband, Richard, of Jackman, Maine; Frances Batchelder of South Berwick, Jane Frankie and her husband, Michael, of Dover; Mary Jo Herman of Manchester; three sons, William V. Batchelder and his wife, Diane; James Batchelder and Edward Batchelder, all of South Berwick; and 12 grandchildren.

BATCHELDER - Dorothy F. Batchelder, 79, of 118 Agamenticus Road, South Berwick, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Church, Young Street, with the Rev. Philip Tracy, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. If desired, memorials in her name may be made to the Squamscott Visiting Nurses & Hospice Care, 113 New Rochester Road, Suite. No. 4, Dover, NH 03820.

Robert W. Finn

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Robert W. Finn, 63, of 1 Freedom Circle, were held from J. Verne Wood-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday with services at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. Chaplain Raymond J. LaPointe, American Legion Department of New Hampshire and Chaplain Mike Richards of Frank E. Booma Post 6 American Legion, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Cmdr. John J. McCarthy of Emerson Hovey Post 168 VFW. Color Guard was Leo Peters and Dan Yoder.

An honor guard was formed by a detachment from Hanscoms Air Force Base under the direction of 2nd Lt. Jean Richardson including 2nd Lt. John Cancellara, Capt. Paul Gilbert, SRA Joe Moran and SRA Terri Watkins.

A volley was fired under the direction of Capt. Paul Gilbert including 2nd Lt. John Cancellara, SRA Joe Moran and SRA Terri Watkins.

Taps was sounded and the flag was folded by 2nd Lt. Jean Richardson and Capt. Paul Gilbert and presented to Karyl Horn by 2nd Lt. Richardson.

An honor guard was also formed by representatives from the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion; the Emerson Hovey Post No. 168, VFW; VFW Women's Auxiliary; and the Sons of the American Legion including: Cmdr. Joseph Shaw A.L.; Richard Brooks, adjutant A.L.; Richard Tessicini, finance officer, A.L.; George McCall, department vice commander, A.L.; John Barnes, past commander, A.L.; Carl Walton, past commander, A.L.; Bill Doster; Dan Yoder, sergeant at arms, A.L.; Percy Goodwill; Mike Richards, chaplain, A.L.; Ray LaPointe, department chaplain, A.L.; Roland Patnode, District 3 commander, A.L.; John McCarthy, commander, VFW; Paul Cushing, quartermaster, VFW; Brenda Walton, past president, Unit 6; Karyl Horn, treasurer, Unit 6; Patty Peters, secretary, Unit 6; Sandy Tessicini, Unit 6, Patty Belleville, Unit 6; Lorraine Gordon, Unit 6; Debbie Perkins, Unit 6; Donna Smith, Unit 6; Sue Tarazewich, Unit 6; Leo Peters, commander, S.A.L.; and Bruce Horn, S.A.L.

American Legion services were held at Buckminster Chapel on Friday conducted by Sr. Vice Cmdr. Don Poisson; Jr. Vice Cmdr Mary Pento; Adj. Richard Brooks; Finance Officer Richard Tessicini; Chaplain Mike Richards; Past Cmdr. Ken Newport; Past Cmdr. John Barnes; Past Cmdr. Patrick Snow; Past Cmdr. Carl Walton; Dept. Cmdr. Dennis Pierson and Color Guard Tony Lozada; Paul Hollingsworth, Earl Pettiford, Leo Peters and Elliot Antequerra, as well as representatives from the American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion.

V.F.W. services were held at the chapel by Cmdr. Carl Walton; Sr. Vice Harry Laderbush; Jr. Vice John Merser; Quartermaster Paul Cushing; Chaplein Mark Anthony; Adj. Paul Anania; Ed. Houle and Smokey Nadeau.

Mitchell Kimon Fulis

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mitchell Kimon Fulis, 81, of 71 Kensington Road, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday. The Rev. Fr. Basil Arabatzis, presbyter of St. Demetrias Church in Saco, officiated. Ushers were Gus Zoulamis, Catherine Jarvis, Vassilios Pamboukes, Ron Currier and Paul Muryn.

In attendance were members of the church and representatives from St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Arabatzis.

Bearers were Niclis Kouloungis, Kimon M. Fulis, Kimon J. Lalas, Jeff Cathcart, Dale Robeck and Dave Robeck.

Wake services were held by Father Arabatzis at the chapel on Monday.

Masonic services were held at the chapel Monday by St. John's Lodge, No. 1 F&AM conducted by Donald L. Stevens, PM, as the worshipful master; Senior Warden William S. Sawyer; Chaplain A. Kenneth Day PM: Secretary Glen R. Gordon PM; Harold Crossman PM; and Ralph Woodman.

Edward J. Sherman

NEWMARKET - Funeral services for Edward J. Sherman, 56, of 251 Ash Swamp Road, were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth on Tuesday. Monsignor Lawrence Burns, pastor, St Catherine of Siena Church, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mr. Sherman's wife, Mrs. Anne T. (Morse) McCurry.

In attendance were post office associates and a large delegation of family and friends.

A motorcycle escort was given by Richard Menard to Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Committal services were by the family lot by Monsignor Burns.

The flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mrs. Anne T. (Morse) McCurry.

Bearers were Edward McCurry, Jon McCurry, Robert Dearia, Joey McCurry, Eddie McCurry and Josh Kent.

Honorary bearers were Bob Lester, Bob Michaud, Kevin Haley, Steve Welch, Buddy Morse and Mike Doll.

Edna (Clark) Stimpson

AMESBURY, Mass. - Edna (Clark) Stimpson, 90, of Amesbury and formerly of 245 Middle St., died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Harborside Home in Amesbury.

Born Dec. 30, 1909, in Salisbury, Mass., she was the daughter of Thatcher and Ada (Pinkham) Clark.

She was employed at CBS ad Western Electric Company.

She was a member of the Amesbury Grange for 69 years. She was a volunteer with RSVP in Portsouth for many years and was a member of the Methodist Church in Portsmouth and Amesbury.

She was the widow of Charles "Red" Stimpson.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Isabelle Currier of Amesbury; a grandnephew, Norman Colby; great grandnieces and great-grandnephew, Melissa, Ashley and Joshua; a stepdaughter, Patricia Vozella of Rye.

STIMPSON - Edna Stimpson, 90, of Amesbury, Mass., and formerly of Portsmouth, died Aug. 19, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Friends may visit with the family from 12 noon until 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation New England Chapter 6, Chenell Drive, Concord, NH, 03304.

Thomas William Cole

VENTURA, Calif. - Thomas William Cole, 49, of Ventura, died in his sleep of a cerebral hemorrhage on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000.

Born in Exeter, on Nov. 7, 1950, he was the son of Harlow and Rita (Fecteau) Cole of Wallis Sands, Rye, and Naples, Fla.

He was a graduate of Avon Old Farms School and the University of Texas. The late Thomas W. and Yvonne (Proulx) Fecteau of Epping, were his maternal grandparents, and the late William and Blanche (Brown) Cole of Fremont, were his paternal grandparents.

Family members besides his parents, include a brother John M. Cole of New York City; a sister Priscilla C. Lester and her husband, Jonathan, of Avon, Conn.; a nephew, Jonathan C. Lester, of Delray Beach, Fla.; a niece, Shawn Swett and her husband, Stephen, of Darien, Conn., and their four children, Stephen, Benjamin, William, and Avery Elizabeth, who were the joy of his life. He also leaves an uncle and aunt, Norman and Ruth Fecteau of Hampton and Pompano; an aunt and uncle Marguerite and Andrew Vallone; and an aunt Mary Fecteau, all of Epping; and numerous Fecteau and Proulx cousins.

He will be sorely missed.

He had been employed in technical positions in the aerospace and electronics industries in Connecticut as well as many years in the Southwest and west coast.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Village Cemetery in Fremont.

Eileen A. (DeTour) Lien

PORTSMOUTH, NH - Eileen A. (DeTour) Lien, 81, a resident of Sunbridge Nursing Center in Portsmouth for more than a year, died Monday at Portsmouth Hospital, following a brief illness.

She was born in Beverly, Mass., June 28, 1919, a daughter of the late Frank and Florence (Britton) DeTour. She was raised in Beverly, and lived in several states and foreign countries during her years as a "Navy wife."

Her family settled in Tewksbury, where she lived the greater part of her life. She moved to Eliot, Maine 16 years ago, where she had resided with a daughter and son-in-law.

She devoted her life to her children, and in her later years began working outside her home. She worked at Sweetheart Plastic Company in Wilmington and later BASF in Bedford.

As a Tewksbury resident, she was a communicant of St. Dorothy's Parish in Wilmington, where she was a member of the Ladies Sodality and also volunteered as a Catechism-CCD teacher.

She was wife of the late Robert E. Lien, who died in 1976.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia and John "Jack" Elliott of Havelock, N.C., Gina and William Zananiri of Eliot, Maine, two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Adele (Ferranti) Lien of Tewksbury and Andrew and Linda (Oteri) Lien of Townsend, two sisters, Joanne Hosman and Alice Gmackowski both of Beverly, a brother Francis DeTour of Rowley, 13 grandchildren, Timothy, Michael, Eric, Alyshia, Kristopher, Jessica, John, Michael, Michele, Adam, Chad, Michelle, and Danielle, and two great grandchildren, Aaron "A.J", and Sara.

She was also sister of the late Corrine Lefavour and Thelma Toomey.

LIEN - in Portsmouth, N.H., formerly Beverly, MA Tewksbury, MA, and Eliot, ME, Aug. 21. Eileen A. (DeTour) Lien, 81, wife of the late Robert E. Lien. Her funeral is Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of Dewey and Main streets (Route 38) Tewksbury Center, phone (800 in Mass. or 978) 851 2950. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m Thursday . in St. Dorothy's Church, Main Street. (Route 38) Wilmington. Relatives and friends will be received Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home. Interment in Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, Wm. Black Medical Bldg., 710 West 168th St, NY, NY, 10032-9982 will be appreciated.

Joseph W. Saurman

ELIOT - Joseph Walter Saurman, 73, of 22 Park St., died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at York Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 7, 1927, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Charles Douglas and Ann (O'Rourke) Saurman. He was a lifelong resident of the Seacoast area.

He served in the Army during World War II and the Navy during the Korean War.

He was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 36 years and retired in 1982. While at the shipyard he served as vice-president of Local Union No. 4, International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.

He was a former member of the Portsmouth Country Club, a member of the VFW of York, a member of the American Legion of Eliot, a member of the Moose Lodge of Portsmouth, and The Fraternal Order of Elks of Portsmouth. He served as a volunteer at York Hospital for many years. He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception of Portsmouth.

He was the husband of Janet (Brawn) Saurman for 52 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, J. Douglas Saurman of South Berwick, and his wife Susan Walllingford of Portsmouth, Janet A. Saurman of Wells, John Gordon Saurman and his wife Melanie Martin of Portsmouth, and Julie M. Saurman of Eliot; five grandchildren, Kelly Saurman and Bryan Saurman of South Berwick, Sara Saurman and Jessica Saurman of Windham, and Oliva Saurman of Portsmouth; two brothers, Edward Saurman of Rye, N.H., and Charles Saurman of York; and many nieces and nephews.

SAURMAN - Joseph W. Saurman, 73, of 22 Park St., Eliot, died Aug. 21, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, N.H.. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Family flowers only please. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of Maine, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Edith Low Sewall

EPPING - Largely attended funeral services for Edith Low Sewall, were held Saturday, from the Epping Community Church.

The service was conducted by former pastor Darrell Huddleston of Clinton, Mass. and Hedding Camp Ground, Epping. Organist was Elizabeth Bilodeau. In attendance was the Rev. Daniel Weaver of United Methodist Church, Exeter, and many area Grange members, members of Fern Rebecca Lodge, and Ladies Aid of the Community Church. The eulogy was given by her granddaughter Sharon Low Allard of Atlanta, Ga.

Burial was at Prospect Cemetery in Epping, with the Rev. Huddleston giving committal prayers.

Pallbearers were Paul Boisseau, William Camire, William Coveno, Larry B. Foss, Kenneth Robert Low, and Mark O. Connor.

Friday evening at the Brewitt Funeral Home, members of Rockingham Grange, led by Master Carol Hill, and Chaplain Louise Harvey, held memorial services, joined by members of Gilman Grange No. 1, led by longtime lecturer Dorothy Pray. Also attending was State Grange officer, Donald Ross of East Kingston.

Edward J. Sherman

NEWMARKET - Mr. Edward J. Sherman, 56, of 251 Ash Swamp Road, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, surrounded by his family at the Exeter Hospital.

He was born Sept. 4, 1943, in Philadelphia, to the late James Sherman and Grace (McDonough) McCurry.

He was the husband of Anne T. (Morse) McCurry for 37 years.

Mr. Sherman worked for the post office for many years and leaves many good friends there.

He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and was loved and respected by his family.

He is survived by his wife Anne; six children, Edward, Jon, Andrea, and Joseph McCurry of Newmarket, and Robert and Christopher of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Edward, Justin, Josh, Ryan, Allie and Joey; a sister, Linda Easton of Warrington, Pa.; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews who thought the world of him.

Mr. Sherman was predeceased by two sons, Edward James McCurry Jr. and Michael Joseph McCurry, whom he now joins in God's care. He will be forever loved and missed.

Helen C. Stanley

EXETER - Helen C. Stanley, 52, of Exeter, formerly of Farmington, Maine, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1948, in Farmington, Maine, she was the daughter of Robert H. and Jean C. Moore.

She was educated in Farmington schools. She worked for her father in the B&J Shoe Co., in North Jay for several years and continued in the shoe industry for several years, working for G.H. Bass Co., in Wilton. She was instrumental in starting the Maine Mountain Footwear Company and also worked for the New Balance Company in Norridgewock. She then worked as product development supervisor and technician for Timberland Shoe Company in Stratham, New Hampshire. She owned and operated Maine Mountain Flowers in Wilton for 15 years.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, woodworking, gardening, wallpapering and painting.

She is survived by three daughters, Jeannine and her husband Michael McDonald of Farmington, Cindy and her husband Edward Tyler of Farmington, Kathy and her husband Raymond Lewis of Wilton; a son, Kevin Stanley of Exeter; her parents, Robert and Jean Moore of North Jay; two brothers, Ronald Collins of New Jersey and Donald Moore of the Dominican Republican; three sisters, Carolyn Boyker of Farmington,, Florice Collins of Livermore Falls and Jeannine Backus of East Wilton; nine grandchildren, Andrew, Ellie, Billiejoe, Chris, Brandon, Ray, Christy, Sarah and David.

STANLEY - Helen C. Stanley, 52, of Exeter, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Exeter Hospital. Visitation hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Adams Funeral Home, 108 Court St., Farmington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, at the funeral home with the Rev. Allison Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Farmington, Maine. Friends wishing to do so may made donations in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME, 04011.
