Phyllis J. Almy

HAMPDEN, Maine - Phyllis Jean (Bachman) Almy, 52, formerly of Seabrook, went to be with her Lord, Aug. 14, 2000, after a brief illness.

She was born in Acushnet, Mass., June 21, 1948.

She was the administrative assistant for the Northern Maine District of the United Methodist Church, a position she had held for the past three years. She had also been an interim pastor for the Swans Island United Methodist Church. Phyllis had lived in the Wareham, Mass., area for many years, where she raised her children. While living in Massachusetts, she was a certified nurses aide and had worked for many years in area nursing homes. Her life evolved around her family and her work for God. Phyllis enjoyed a challenge and liked being in the middle of things. She received great comfort in the Shepherd's Theme and found the strength that our heavenly Father promises in the 23rd Psalm. She used this as an anthem to live by. Her entire life was in service to God and she was active in the church her entire life as a former member of the East Wareham, Mass. United Methodist Church and the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church of Hampden.

Surviving are her beloved sons, Christopher Adam Almy of Alpharetto, Ga., G. Scott Almy and his wife, Lisa, of Marion, Mass.; and Pastor Robert "Robb" Alan Almy and his wife, Diana of Richmond, Va.; a granddaughter, Sydney and a grandson, Daniel; and dear friends, Debra J. Hanson of Hampden and Jon Delano of Lawrenceville, Ga.

ALMY - Phyllis Jean (Bachman) Almy, 52, of Hampden, Maine, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000. Visiting hours were held Tuesday 6-8 p.m., at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, at the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, 44 Kennebec Road, Hampden, with the Rev. Vicki Woods officiating, assisted by the Rev. Debra J. Hanson and Pastor Robert A. Almy. Memorial contributions may be made to the New England Conference Scholarship Fund, care of New England Conference U.M.C., P.O. Box 249, Lawrence, Mass. 01842-0449, attn: Resource Team.

Beulah L. Lane

LANE - Beulah L. Lane died Aug. 11, 2000, at the Wellstone House in Raymond. A memorial service will be held for her at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 2, at Calvary Baptist Church, 472 Ocean Road, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, those wishing are asked to make donations in her memory to her church for the purpose of taking Bibles into Russia. Burial will be in Tioga Cemetery, Tioga, N.Y. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

RAYMOND - Beulah L. Lane, died Aug. 11, 2000, at the Wellstone House in Raymond, an assisted living facility, where she has been residing.

Born Dec. 19, 1913, in Columbia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Alice Buck.

She graduated from Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing in 1935, and worked at Robert Packer Hospital as a registered nurse in post anesthesia when she left her professional career in December 1975. She was an avid reader of Biblical, historical and political texts and made many museum-quality quilts for her family.

She survived three of her children and is survived by a daughter, Jean A. Dimock of Newfields; four grandchildren, Craig S. Lane of Leesburg, Va.; Heather Lane Brown of Haneoye Falls, N.Y.; Stephanie J. Dimock Burgraff of Templeton, Mass.; and Jonathan W. Dimock of Newfields; one great-grandchild, Kyle Lane Brown; a sister, Ollie Potter of Winter Haven, Fla.; a brother Lauren D. Buck of New Port Richey, Fla.; foster twins, Dorothy Weber of East Patchague, N.Y.; and Dalice Yost of Redford, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Portsmouth.

Charles N. Perkins

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Charles N. Perkins, 54, of 245 Middle St., were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Tuesday, Aug. 15. The Rev. Linda Downing, pastor of the Bethel Assembly of God in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mr. Perkin's daughter, Jennifer Astbury; his sisters, Frances Gobbi and Ruth Emerton, and his uncle, Wilbur Perkins.

Burial was in the Proprietor's Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Pastor Downing.

Bearers were Woody Emerton, Frank L. Swett III, Stephen C. Gouin, Ryan Astbury, William LaFrenier and P.J. Swett.

Beverly J. Pinkham

YORK - Beverly J. Pinkham, 68, of 7 Huckins Ave., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in York Hospital. Born on June 10, 1932 in Sanford, she was the daughter of Richard and Marjorie (Porell) Hanson and was a 1950 graduate of York High School.

She had formerly resided in Illinois, Kentucky and Kwajalein Island in the Marshall Islands, before returning to York in 1979. She had attended the Beech Ridge Assembly of God Church and the United Methodist Church of York.

She had formerly worked at Cliff's Shoes as a saleswoman in York and at Micromed Corporation of York.

She enjoyed painting, golf, swimming, fishing, and caring for her dog.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard L. Pinkham Sr., who died in 1986, and by a son, Rodney Pinkham, who died in 1979.

Survivors include her mother, Marjorie Hanson of York; one son, Howard L. Pinkham Jr. of York; one daughter, Dawn Evans of Irving, Ill.; one brother, Richard Hanson of York; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

PINKHAM - Beverly J. Pinkham, 68, of 7 Huckins Ave., York, the widow of Howard L. Pinkham Sr., died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000. At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Hazel G. Balfour

NORTH HAMPTON - Hazel G. Balfour, 79, of 161 Post Road, died Monday, August 14, 2000, at the Catholic Medical Center, Manchester.

Born November 27, 1920, in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of the late George and Rose (Stevens) Brownell.

Mrs. Balfour was a graduate of Revere High School and attended McIntosh College in Dover. She resided in Revere, Mass., for many years before moving to North Hampton in 1960.

She worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for several years as an administrative assistant. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Hampton and was very involved in the church's nearly new shop, it's Women's Club, coffee hours, and was a member of the Oasis Club of Exeter. A very well-read person, she enjoyed helping others.

She was the wife of the late Raymond H. Balfour who died in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Santella of Middleton, Mass. and Donna Devaney of Landing, N.J.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Burcham of Revere, Mass.; several nieces and nephews.

BALFOUR - Hazel G. Balfour of 161 Post Road, North Hampton, died Aug. 14, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 4-8 p.m., today, at Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 High St., Hampton, NH 03842.

Norman L. Cavanaugh

ELIOT - Norman L. Cavanaugh, 78, of 10 Fore Road, died suddenly at York Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000.

Born in Boston, he was the son of Lester and Etta Simpson Cavanaugh. When he was young, his family settled in Truro, Nova Scotia where he was raised and attended schools. He graduated from high school in 1940 and soon after entered and proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of second lieutenant.

After his discharge from the Army Air Corp, he was married in 1946 to his loving wife of 53 years, Norma Halverson Cavanaugh. They lived for a time in the Greenfield area of western Massachusetts. From there they moved to Kittery Point where he became an outside machinist in Shop 38 of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. They raised their two daughters in Kittery Point and made it their home for 15 years.

Nearing retirement from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard they moved to Eliot and settled for more than 26 years. During this time, he was employed at the University of New Hampshire working in the field house at a job and with people he truly enjoyed.

He was an avid swimmer and bike rider. He was well known at the Greenleaf Athletic Club and the Portsmouth pool where he was a regular swimmer. He was also seen often riding his bicycle from home to town and back on a regular basis.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 53 years, Norma Halverson Cavanaugh of Eliot; two daughters, JoAnn Jellison and her husband, Dale, of Ashland, Va.; Sheri L. Clark and her husband, James, of Tacoma, Wa; a sister, Virginia Mcdougall of Langley British Columbia; grandchildren Darin Jellison and his wife, Kristen, of Boston; Brooke Jellison of Richmond, Va.; Jamie Clark and her fiancee, Kevin Holloway, of Seattle, Wa. and Ethan Clark, of Tacoma, Wa.

CAVANAUGH - Norman L. Cavanaugh, 78, of 10 Fore Road, Eliot, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eliot Fire Department-Thermal Imaging Camera Fund, c/o Eliot Town Office, 141 State Road, Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Walter W. Sousa

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Walter W. Sousa, 73, died unexpectedly, Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his home.

Born Dec. 3, 1926, in Cambridge, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Coughlin) Sousa.

He served in the Navy during World War II as a seaman, second class. He worked for Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge for more than 30 years and was a lifelong resident of Cambridge.

He is survived by two sons, Mark and Ricardo Sousa, both of Kittery; three sisters, Dorothy Boisvert of Winter Haven, Fla., Dolores Sherman of North Weymouth, Mass, and Gail Sousa of Brookline, Mass., two brothers, Richard of Tewksbury, Mass. and William of Cambridge. He also leaves six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Sousa, and a sister, Nancy Preble.

SOUSA - Walter W. Sousa, 73, of Cambridge, Mass., died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 17, at the John C. Burns & Sons Funeral Home, 305 Broadway, Cambridge. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Cambridge. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday. Interment Cambridge Cemetery.

Eunice B. Zeason

ANTIOCH, Ill. - Eunice B. Zeason, 74, of Antioch, Ill., passed away Monday, July 17, 2000, at Victory Memorial Hospital, Waukegan, Ill.

Born Oct. 5, 1925, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Arthur H. and Elsie B. (Drowns) Bean. On Jan. 18, 1947, she married Fred "Bud" Zeason in Chicago, Ill., and they moved to Antioch. She worked as an inspector for Pickard China Co. in Antioch for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Fred "Bud"; one son, William Zeason and his wife, Kathleen, of Lindenhurst, Ill.; and one daughter, Jeanne Ryan and her husband, Frank, of Lake Villa, Ill; two brothers, Alvin Bean and his wife, Margaret, and Urban Bean and his wife, Virginia; four sisters, Leona Prescott and her husband, Robert; Phyllis Lundgren and her husband, Knute; Doris Hanisen and her husband, Frank; and Erdene A. Beal and her husband, Linwood; four grandchildren, Ashley Zeason, David Ryan, Morgan Zeason and Kelly Zeason and one great-granddaughter, Kayleen Ryan. She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Bean and two sisters, Rosma Grenier and Hilda Chartier.

Funeral services and final disposition was private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Antioch Rescue Squad. Arrangements by the Strang Funeral Home of Antioch.

EBBESON - Helen (Selwood) Ebbeson, 87, of Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, died Aug. 11, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Christ Episcopal Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Rd., Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Christiane M. Legere

NORTH HAMPTON - Christiane M. (Arsenault) Legere, 52, of 115 Lafayette Rd., died on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, in Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, Maine after becoming ill in Saco, Maine.

Born March 28, 1948, in Paris, France, she was the daughter of the late Charles J. Jaumont, and was raised in Millbury. She lived in Oxford, Mass., before moving to New Hampshire in 1980. She was a 1966 graduate of Marian High School, and she attended Salter Secretarial School, both in Worcester, Mass.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Parish in Portsmouth, and a former member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Parish in Millbury. She enjoyed gardening and cooking, and volunteered for several years at animal shelters in the Hampton area.

She leaves her husband of 32 years, Leo Robert Legere; three daughters, Stephanie E. Reynolds of Apex, N.C., and twins Renee A. Legere and Michelle Y. Legere, both of West Palm Beach, Fla; and her mother, Georgette Y. (Labbe) Arsenault of Millbury, Mass.

Her adoptive father, Roger L. Arsenault, died in 1979.

LEGERE - Christiane M. (Arsenault) Legere, 52, of 115 Lafayette Rd., North Hampton, died Aug. 9, 2000. The funeral will be at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16, from Turgeon Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Millbury, Mass., with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Assumption Church, 10 Waters St., Millbury, Mass. Burial will follow in Central Cemetery in Millbury. Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 15. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Renovation Fund of Our Lady of The Assumption Church 12 Waters St., Millbury, MA 05127.

Peter M. Perkins

PORTSMOUTH - Peter M. Perkins, 37, of 75 Longmeadow Lane, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his home.

Born Jan. 6, 1963, in York, he was the son of Wayne K. and Gloria (Lamott) Perkins. He was a graduate of York High School, Class of 1981, and the University of Maine, Orono, Class of 1985.

He was formerly employed in the Customer Service Department at Continental Cablevision for 11 years.

Besides his parents of York, he is survived by a sister, Paula M. Perkins of Portsmouth; and three half-brothers, Jonathan, Joshua, and Jordan Perkins, all of York.

PERKINS - Peter M. Perkins, 37, of 75 Longmeadow Lane, Portsmouth, died Aug. 12, 2000. Private funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St. Portsmouth. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to Betty's Dream, 75 Longmeadow Lane, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Helen (Selwood) Ebbeson

EXETER - Helen (Selwood) Ebbeson, 87, of Riverwoods Drive, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at her home.

Born Aug. 3, 1913, in Perry, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Marion (Cederwall) Selwood.

She was a graduate of Eastport High School and the University of Southern Maine, Gorham, Maine.

She was a teacher in Brewer and Orono, Maine schools before coming to the Portsmouth area in 1943. She was on the board of directors and was membership chair for the Seacoast Community Concerts Association, and president of the Portsmouth Y.W.C.A.

She was active in church work at the parish level for St. John's Episcopal churches and Christ Episcopal churches, at the diocesan level in New Hampshire, and at the national level as a member of the National Episcopal Hunger Committee and two committees of the National Council of Churches. She was also on the staffs of the Episcopal Diocese of N.H.'s youth program, clergy deployment and leadership training in education.

She worked with the Rockingham County Neighborhood Youth Corps as a counselor and later as its director. She was a member of R.S.V.P, and was co-editor, with her husband of the book "Living Simply."

She was the wife of Eric N. Ebbeson, whom she married on July 27, 1941.

Besides her husband of 59 years, survivors include two children, Eric Ebbeson Jr. of Hampton, and Kristin Ebbeson of Rollinsford; four grandchildren, Gretchen Ebbeson of Frisco, Colo., Christopher Ebbeson of Parma, Ohio, Stephanie Rouleau of Great Falls, Mont., and Jeremy Rouleau of Rollinsford; and a brother, Merrill Selwood of Pembrooke, Maine.

EBBESON - Helen (Selwood) Ebbeson, 87, of Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, died Aug. 11, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 16, at Christ Episcopal Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Robert W. Orr

PORTSMOUTH - Robert W. Orr, 77, of 825 Maplewood Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his home.

Born July 10, 1923, in Kittery, he was the son of the late Joseph T. and Ethel (Lee) Orr and was a graduate of Traip Academy in Kittery.

He served in the Coast Guard for four years during World War II. He was employed as a call firefighter for the Portsmouth Fire Department from 1954 to 1956. In 1956, he joined as a regular firefighter, retiring in 1984 after more than 30 years of service. He was employed also as a part-time truck driver for Iafolla's.

He was a charter member of IAFF No. 1313; past master of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F& AM of Portsmouth; past high priest, Washington Royal Arch Chapter No. 3; member of Davenport Council No. 5 of Royal and Select Masters; member of Dewitt Clinton Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar.

He was the husband of the late Shirley G. (Watt) Orr.

Survivors include two sons, Dale R. Orr, and his wife, Bonnie, and Gary C. Orr, both of Portsmouth; two grandsons, Justin and Cameron Orr, both of Portsmouth; one brother, Joseph Orr of Sapulpa, Okla.; and his special friend, Harriet LaMarca of Eliot.

He was predeceased by his stepmother, Mae (Hayes) Orr and sister Elizabeth Abrams.

ORR - Robert W. Orr, 77, of 825 Maplewood Ave., Portsmouth, died Aug. 12, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, at the Chapel, with Masonic services by St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM at 5:45 p.m. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the N.H. Lung Association, 456 Beech St., P.O. Box 1014, Manchester, NH 03105-1014. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Marshall E. Kulberg

HAMPTON - The funeral for Marshall E. Kulberg, 80, of 173 Winnacunnet Road, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Services were held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Hampton. The Rev. Peter A. Lane, vicar, officiated. Organist was Anne Shumway Rowe.

The readings were offered by Peter and John Kulberg.

Pall bearers were A. Peter Kulberg, John M. Kulberg, Kristina Kulberg, Eric Kulberg, Gordon Kulberg, and Karl Kulberg.

Following cremation, private burial will be at the convenience of the family.
