Philip H. Doucette Sr.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Philip J. Doucette Sr., 38, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Hospice Atlanta, following an extended period of illness.

Born in Denver, Colo., he attended school in Kittery, Maine, and graduated from Traip Academy in 1980. After graduation, he worked as a carpenter in the construction industry until he graduated from the Apprenticeship Program of the Machinist Trade from Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard in 1993.

He moved to the Atlanta area in 1994, residing in Lawrenceville. He owned a landscaping company.

He was the husband of Darla Doucette.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Philip Jr., and daughter, Erica; his parents, John Sr. and Rita Doucette of Kittery; two brothers, John Jr. and wife, Carina, of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Michael and wife, Lori, of Wells; two sisters, Joy Goupil and husband, Nic, of Kittery, and Anita Jewell and husband, Doug, of Pembroke, N.H.; and five nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held July 13, 2000, at the White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Duluth, Ga.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 12 at St. Raphael's Church, Kittery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, GA 30319.

EZZELL - Patricia M. (Linchey) Ezzell, 59, of 1142 Rolla St., Rolla, Mo., died July 27, 2000. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 19 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Flowers will be accepted. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Lucille R. Hightower

PORTSMOUTH - Lucille R. Hightower, 65, of 122 Hillcrest Estates, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at her home.

Born Dec. 9, 1934, in Waterville, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Joseph M. and Virginia (Morin) Rancourt. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1952.

She was employed by the Internal Revenue Service for 20 years, retiring in 1997. She was an active member of the Bethany Church.

Survivors include her son, James D. Hightower of Bangkok, Thailand; two brothers, Maurice J. Rancourt and Louis R. Rancourt; one sister, Nancy Pirone; five nieces; four nephews; and her former husband, Travis D. Hightower.

She is also survived by friends Ann Marie Weston, Louise Henley, Louella Snyder, Gail Bridgewood and Ruth Childs.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Felix Rancourt.

She was much loved and will be missed by all.

HIGHTOWER - Lucille R. Hightower, 65, of 122 Hillcrest Estates, Portsmouth, died Aug. 4, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the Bethany Church, Breakfast Hill Road, Rye. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Portsmouth Regional Home Health and Hospice Services, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

WATKINS - E. Barbara Watkins, 78, died Aug. 6, 2000. There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, in the Perkins Funeral Home Inc., 60 Main St., Pittsfield, N.H. The Rev. Charles Paige-Morgan, pastor of the First Congregational Church, will officiate. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the CRVNA, P.O. Box 1797, Concord, NH 03302-1797, or the Pittsfield Fire & Rescue, 3 Catamount Road, Pittsfield, NH 03263. The Perkins Funeral Home Inc. is handling the arrangements.

Margaret F. Kohut

DOVER - Margaret Ferguson Kohut, 55, of 166A Henry Law Ave., died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, after an 11-year illness with breast cancer.

Born Sept. 18, 1944, in Rumford, Maine, she was the daughter of Norman Kenneth and Hazel (Merrill) Ferguson Sr.

She attended public schools in Hanover and Rumford, and graduated from the Gould Academy in 1962. She received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Maine in Orono in 1967. While a student at the University of Maine, she was a proud participant in the Powder Puff Derby.

She was a social worker for more than 20 years in both Connecticut and New Hampshire. She was a trustee of the Wentworth Home, and an active member of First Parish Church and the Strafford County Republican Party. She was a member of the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Breast Cancer Support Group and a member of Al-Anon.

She was married on Jan. 20, 1968, in New Haven, Conn.

She will be lovingly remembered by survivors including her husband of 32 years, William T. Kohut Sr. of Dover; a son, William T. Kohut Jr. and his wife, Christine, of New Providence, N.J.; a daughter, Rebecca (Kohut) Sherburne and her husband, Fred Sherburne, of Dover; a brother, Norman K. Ferguson Jr. of Hanover, Maine; two sisters, Elizabeth (Ferguson) Mottla of Westboro, Mass., and Nancy (Ferguson) Linaweaver of Woodstock, Va.; four grandchildren, Kendra Lee Sherburne, John Taylor Sherburne, Alexandra Morrison Kohut and Katherine Ferguson Kohut.

KOHUT - Margaret Ferguson Kohut, 55, of Dover died Aug. 4, 2000. Friends and relatives may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be officiated by the Rev. David L. Slater, pastor, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at First Parish Church in Dover. Those who wish may make donations in her name to Habitat for Humanity, Southeast (N.H.) Chapter, 33 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, NH 03801; the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition, 18 Belle Lane, Lee, NH 03824; or the First Parish Church New Building Fund, 218 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820. Arrangements under the direction of the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home.

Dorothy M. Shorey

NEWMARKET - Dorothy M. Shorey, 81, of Maplecrest, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Durham at the home of her daughter.

Born July 28, 1919, in Epping, she was the daughter of Theodore and Georgianna (Duffey) Morel. She had resided in Newmarket for 50 years.

During World War II she served as a pharmacist's mate first class in the U.S. Navy.

She received her bachelor of education degree from Keene State College and her master's degree from the University of New Hampshire.

She taught at schools in Epping, Winchester, Newmarket; Portsmouth Junior High School; and third grade at St. Mary's School in Newmarket.

She also taught citizenship education, preparing people for their U.S. citizenship test.

For 20 years she operated Winnie the Pooh Kindergarten and Nursery School at her home in Newmarket. She also operated Winnie the Pooh Boutique for five years.

To the many people who knew her, she was affectionately known as "The Purple Lady," because of her love for the color purple, which showed in the purple clothes she always wore.

She was very active in many organizations including: past grand regent of court Hector Benoit CDA; past president of the Newmarket Service Club; past president of the Southeastern N.H. International Management Council, where she received several awards during her 35 years of membership; the Quota Club of Dover; the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 and Auxiliary Unit No. 67; and the Newmarket Business Association, where she did extensive fund raising.

She also volunteered at Newmarket Head Start and Newmarket Meals on Wheels. She was the Welcome Wagon hostess for 20 years and recently started the Purple Lady Greeting Service in Newmarket.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Newmarket.

She was the wife of the late Forrest E. Shorey, who died in 1987.

Survivors include one son, Edwin Shorey and his wife, Jean, of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Margaret R. Thomas of Irvine, Calif., Cynthia A. Racic and her husband, Mark, of Durham, and Barbe Herrholz and her husband, John, of Derry; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Christine Gregoire of Dover, Marguerite Sheehan of Waltham, Mass., and M. Rita Poliquin of Epping; and many nieces and nephews.

SHOREY - Dorothy M. Shorey, 81, of Maplecrest, Newmarket, died Aug. 5, 2000. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. American Legion Post and Unit services will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 9 from St. Mary's Church in Newmarket. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Newmarket. At her request, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 1 St. Jude Place Building, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148-0552.

E. Barbara Watkins

PITTSFIELD - E. Barbara Watkins, 78, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at the Concord Hospital, following a long period of illness.

Born in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Henry and Maude (Forrence) Erickson.

She had lived in Pittsfield for 44 years. She retired from the Globe Manufacturing Co. in Pittsfield, where she had worked for more than 30 years.

She was a member of the new voice club, and devoted many volunteer hours speaking to youth groups and such at the Concord Hospital and the University of New Hampshire. She was also a volunteer for the Clothes Closet in Pittsfield.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert F. Watkins; and two children, Marc E. Watkins and Cheryl Watkins.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert T. and Judy Watkins, of Barnstead; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bill Williamson, of Nashua; four granddaughters, two great-granddaughters; one sister, Martha Cournoyer, of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert N. Weaver

YORK HARBOR - Robert N. Weaver, 76, of York Street, died Friday at his residence.

Born Dec. 24, 1923, in Boston, he was the son of Richard S. and Margaret (McGrath) Weaver. He was a 1942 graduate of York High School. He served in the Army from 1951-1953, during the Korean Conflict.

He had worked at Baker's Market in York Village from 1936-1951. After returning from the Army he worked at Simplex Wire and Cable from 1954-62. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 25 years in Shop 38 as an outside marine machinist, retiring in 1988.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher by the Sea Church of York. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 140 and was a Fourth Degree member of St. Mary's Assembly of Portsmouth. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Boardman-Ellis Post No. 6977, the York Elk's Club and a former member of the York Militia.

He was an avid camper who had traveled to every state in the United States and all but one Canadian province. He also had camped in Europe. He traveled extensively in Europe, Russia and China. He was a 35-year member of the North American Family Campers Association and a 10-year member of the Family Motorcoach Association.

He was the husband of Freda (Leupold) Weaver.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Richard F. Weaver and his wife, Martina, of Konigsbrunn, Germany; two daughters, Margaret L. Weaver of Summit, N.J., and Elizabeth A. Weaver of Gales Ferry, Conn.; and one granddaughter, Jennifer C. Weaver of Germany.

WEAVER - Robert N. Weaver, 76, of York Street, York Harbor, died Aug. 4, 2000. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Visiting hours will be from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, and 6-8 p.m., Monday, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Gale Anne Smith

HAMPTON - Gale Anne Smith, 52, resident of Lafayette Road, formerly of Chandler, Ariz., died Friday, Aug. 4, at Exeter Hospital after a long illness.

Born in North Reading, Mass., she was the daughter of Nathaniel C. and Marjorie G. (Edgerly) Smith. She graduated from Haverhill High School with the Class of 1965 and received her nursing degree from the Maine Medical Center School of Nursing in Portland, Maine.

She was employed for many years as a Home Healthcare Provider for several different agencies.

She moved to Hampton in 1997.

She enjoyed traveling, walking on the beach and spending time with her grandsons. She also enjoyed taking care of elderly people and had a hard time saying "no" to them.

She is survived by her mother of Hampton; two daughters, Kari (Kramer) Wright of Kennebunk, Maine, and Jodi (Kramer) Gugler of Peabody, Mass,; two brothers, Nathaniel and Jeffrey Smith of Hampton; and two grandsons, Alexander and Samuel Wright of Kennebunk.

SMITH - Gale Anne Smith, 52, resident of Lafayette Road in Hampton, formerly of Chandler, Ariz., died Aug. 4, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 5-8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 7, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, Maine. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, in St. Martha's Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk. Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Gale's memory to the Children's Miracle Network, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.

Gladys Chapman

STRATHAM - Gladys (Dolloff) Chapman, 92, formerly of College Road, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare.

Born March 19, 1908, in Mendon, Mass., she was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Wiggin) Dolloff. She lived most of her life in Stratham. For more than 40 years, she and her husband lived on College Road at Chapman's Landing. Recently she had lived at 9 Granite St., Newmarket.

From 1934 to 1966, she was the librarian at Wiggin Memorial Library in Stratham. She also worked for many years at the Macallan Co. in Newmarket, from which she retired.

She attended Robinson Seminary in Exeter and was a former member of the Women's Club and PTA in Stratham.

She was the widow of L. Russell Chapman, who died in 1987, and was also predeceased by her son, Norris Chapman, who died in 1981.

Survivors include her daughter, Mona Gokhale and her husband, Bajirao, of Greenfield, Mass.; four grandchildren, Susan Parker and her husband, Michael, of Loudon, N.H., James Gokhale of Arlington, Mass., Lisa Gokhale of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Virginia Gokhale of Syracuse, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Kristie Clark of Loudon and Jennifer Gokhale of Littleton, Mass.; a sister, Virginia Dolloff of Stratham; and several nieces and nephews.

CHAPMAN - Gladys (Dolloff) Chapman, 92, died Aug. 4, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Stratham Community Church with the Rev. Jeff Hansis, officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. Family flowers only. If desired, memorials in her memory may be made to Lamprey Healthcare, Transportation Fund, 207 South Main St., Newmarket, NH 03857, or to the charity of one's choice.

Mary E. Riley

ELIOT - Mary E. Riley, 75, of Grover Avenue, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Aug. 27, 1924, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Hanah (Ducey) Deem.

She was raised and attended schools in Northwood, N.H., graduation from Coe Brown Northwood Academy. She later attended and graduated from Sacred Heart Nurses School in Manchester, receiving her degree as a registered nurse.

She was employed for a time at Portsmouth Hospital and later at General Electric as an industrial health nurse, and from where she retired.

She is survived by her loving husband, Linwood Riley of Eliot; their son, Daniel, and his wife, Laurie Riley, of Eliot; grandson, Michael Riley of Eliot; and her brother, Robert Deem of St. Cloud, Fla.

She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.

RILEY - Mary E. Riley, 75, of Grover Avenue, Eliot, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000. Funeral services will be private. Donations may be made in her memory to the York Hospital Oncology Department, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.
