Neil W. W. Young

YORK HARBOR - Neil W. W. Young, 84, of Sentry Hill, formerly of 200 York St., York, and Meetinghouse Village, Rogers Road, Kittery, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Oct. 3, 1915, in Keene, N.H., he was the son of John W. and Katherine R. (Dods) Young and was a graduate of Middleboro High School in Middleboro, Mass.

He had served in the Army as an administrative assistant in the Shipping and Receiving Department for 27 years, retiring with the rank of CW-4 in 1970.

He married Helen Putnam in June 1938.

He had lived in Whitman, Rockland and Somerset, Mass., for many years, moving to York in 1970. For 10 years, he served as the box office treasurer of the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit.

He was a York Hospital volunteer in the Medical Record Department and a member of the Scottish Clan Young. He enjoyed researching his Scottish roots.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen (Putnam) of York Harbor.

YOUNG - Neil W. W. Young, 84, of Sentry Hill, York Harbor, and formerly of Meetinghouse Village, Kittery, died Aug. 3, 2000. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the First Parish Cemetery in York. Memorial donations may be made to the York Public Library, 172 York St., York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Franky L. Marcus

PORTSMOUTH - Burial services for Capt. Franky L. Marcus (Ret. USMC) were held July 23, 2000, at Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. The service was conducted by the Rev. Agapit Jean, pastor of St. James Catholic Church.

The service was attended by her parents, Col. Frank P. Marcus (Ret. USMC) and Loraine Marcus of Portsmouth; her son, Devin Simmons; her husband, James H. Page Jr. of Nottingham, N.H.; stepchildren, James and Amanda Page; and family members and relatives.

A celebration of her life was held at St. Catherine Church, Portsmouth, following the burial. Attending were many relatives, classmates from Portsmouth High School Class of 1975, co-workers, teachers, college classmates, and the many dear friends she shared her life with.

Arthur D. Madden

EXETER - Arthur D. Madden, 88, of 17 Hampton Road, died on Friday July 28, 2000, at Langdon Place following a brief period of illness.

Born Nov. 27, 1911, in Rochester, N.Y., he was the son of the late Arthur and Edna (Dubelbeiss) Madden. He was a graduate of the University of Rochester.

For more than 25 years, he was the assistant treasurer for Bradley Producing Co. in Wellsville, N.Y. He was also a member of the local Rotary Club. He retired to North Carolina with his wife in 1987 and moved to New Hampshire in 1995.

He was a veteran, having served in World War II with the U.S. Navy as a communications officer.

He was the husband of Mary Kathryn (Snyder) Madden for 60 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Peyton (Judith) Carr of Stratham; two granddaughters, Lauren and Justine Carr; a brother, Robert Madden of Rochester; three sisters, Ruth Estes and Edna Lou Brown, both of Rochester, and Virginia Sullivan of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Art's life will be held at a later date.

MADDEN - Arthur D. Madden, 88, of 17 Hampton Road, Exeter, died July 28, 2000. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. To view an online memorial, go to www.csnh.com.

Robert Joseph Mills III

KITTERY - Robert Joseph Mills III, 53, of Phelps Street, died Aug. 2, 2000, at his home.

Born Oct. 25, 1946, in Portland, he was the son of Robert J. and Rita Holland Mills. He was a lifelong resident of Kittery and attended local schools.

Besides his love of his family, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing the guitar, and his animals.

Survivors include his mother, Rita Mills of Kittery; daughter Stephanie Poggemeyer and her husband, Keith, of Colorado; sister Joanne Rutherford and her husband, James, of York; brother John Mills of Kittery; grandchildren Amity Graham, Haylee Poggemeyer and Nicholas Poggemeyer, all of Colorado; and a niece and nephew.

He was predeceased by his father, Robert J. Mills Jr., in 1960.

MILLS - Robert J. Mills, 53, of Phelps Street, Kittery, died Aug. 2, 2000, at his home. Funeral services will be private. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St., Augusta, ME 04333. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Charles W. Chisholm

HAMPTON - The funeral for Charles W. Chisholm, 68, of 2 Tide Mill Road, who died July 28, 2000, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist, and Patricia Mackensen was soloist.

The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the Hampton United Methodist Church, was seated in the sanctuary and offered the readings and also words of remembrance. Acolytes were Richard Viollette, Robert Grissemeer and Larry Murphy.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father Ham. Pallbearers were Michael Clouthier, Thomas Chisholm, Kevin Cushing, Thomas Harrington, Larry Mulcahy and Chris Mulcahy. American Legion services were conducted Tuesday evening at the funeral home by Hampton's American Legion Post No. 32.

Foster L. Greene

HAMPTON - The funeral for Foster L. Greene, 68, of 340 Lafayette Road, was held Wednesday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiated. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Knowlton.

Catherine M. Gum

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Catherine M. (Greeley) Gum, 69, of 20 Edgewood Road, were held Wednesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Monsignor Lawrence Burns, pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Church, officiated.

Bearers were Ed Storer, David McAskill, Harry Hobbs, Dick Marshall, Charlie Marshall and Tim Marshall.

Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Marjorie E. Sawyer

KITTERY POINT - Marjorie E. Sawyer, 90, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the Harbor Home in York.

Born July 1, 1910, in South Berwick, she was the daughter of the late George and Maude E. (Emery) MacKenzie.

She attended schools in Kittery and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point, where she had served as a deaconess.

She was an avid bowler, and belonged to a bowling league at the Portsmouth Bowl-A-Rama for more than 30 years. She was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program for many years, and a member of the Eastern Star of Kittery. She was a loving mother, wife and homemaker.

She was the wife of the late Wilbur F. Sawyer Sr., who died in 1986, for 59 years.

Survivors include a son, Wilbur Sawyer Jr. of Kittery; a daughter, Sandra Garland of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a sister, Mildred Garoutte of Minnesota; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Barbara Sawyer.

SAWYER - Marjorie E. Sawyer, 90, of Kittery Point, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 1, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at the First Baptist Church, Kittery Point. The Rev. George Wardwell will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point Memorial Fund, 636 Haley Road, Kittery Point, ME 03905.

Helen Levy

NEWTON CENTER, Mass. - Funeral services for Mrs. Helen (Alpers) Levy, 98, of 1106 Center St., were held Monday from Buckminster Chapel, with graveside services in the Temple Israel Cemetery, Portsmouth. Rabbi David H. Mark, of Temple Israel, officiated.

Pallbearers were Carl Packer, Robert Weiss, John Weiss, Richard Brooks, Lloyd B. Wolf and Joe Eisenstein.

M. Irene Teague

BARRINGTON - M. Irene (Langley) Teague, 92, passed away peacefully Monday, July 31, 2000, at Langdon Place of Dover.

Born Aug. 24, 1907, at home in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Edmund and Mildred (Holbrook) Langley Sr.

She attended Hampton Academy, worked in the hotel business on Hampton Beach with her family, and developed a career in real estate in Barrington on Swain's Lake before retirement.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, an active member of the National Rifle Association, and proactive with the National Republican Committee.

Survivors include one daughter, Gwendolyn L. Teague Chamberlain of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; three granddaughters, Sandra L. Fogg of Crestview, Fla., Pamela S. Yeoman of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Lisa L. McCullom of Evansville, Ind.; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth W. Langley of Hampton, and Donald J. Langley of Amesbury, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Elbert E. Langley and Edmund Langley Jr.; two grandsons, John Kramer and Kent Kramer; and one granddaughter, Robin Yonn.

TEAGUE - M. Irene (Langley) Teague, 92, died July 31, 2000. There are no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., today (Wednesday), at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. After cremation, committal services will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 5, at the High Street Cemetery in Hampton.

Arline Barter

RYE - A funeral service was held Monday for Arline Barter of Eliot, who died July 27, 2000 at Webster at Rye.

The service was held at 11 a.m. in her church, the First Congregational Church of Eliot, with the Rev. Dr. David Avery and Pastor Gail Kindberg officiating. Emily Haggarty accompanied the congregation on the organ, singing some of Arline's favorite hymns. Solos were performed by Robert Barter, who sung "Little Boy", and the lord's prayer was sung by Arline's granddaughter Dee Lamere. She also shared fond memories of her grandmother. Words of remembrance were shared by Rev. Avery from a writing by Elaine Barter Plaisted.

Burial was at Brooks Memorial Park with the Rev. Avery and Pastor Kindberg offering a committal service. Pall bearers were Robert Barter III, Brent Goodwin, Nathan and Robert Lamere, John Thompson and Ken Parsons. A reception followed at McPherson Hall for family and friends. Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

W. Gordon Blaney

KENSINGTON - W. Gordon Blaney, 65, of 93 Amesbury Road, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at his home.

Born Feb. 20, 1935, in Exeter, he was the son of Ida M. (Peters) Dube of Hampton, and the late Harry Blaney. He had been a resident of Kensington for the past seven years, previously residing in Kittery and Salisbury, Mass.

He began his career working for Pratt & Whitney Corp. in Connecticut, then the Western Electric Corp. in North Andover, Mass., and later, after working as a salesman for Singer Sewing Co., he opened his own business, "Gordon's Service Center," in Salisbury, which he operated for 35 years.

He was known to be able to do anything with his hands. If he didn't have the right tool, he simply made it. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Marines.

He was the husband of Evelyn C. Blaney.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include three sons, Gordon F. Blaney Sr. and his wife, Lynette; Arthur L. Blaney and his wife, Kathy; and Matthew G. Blaney, all of Salisbury; a daughter, Anne Hopkins and her husband, Keith, of Mattapoisett, Mass.; a brother, Harry Blaney Jr. of Dunbarton, N.H.; a sister, Charlotte Perkins of Hampton Falls; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

BLANEY - W. Gordon Blaney, 65, of 93 Amesbury Road, Kensington, died Sunday, July 30, 2000. Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, at Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 28 High St., Newburyport, Mass., followed by funeral services at 6 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Stratham SPCA, Portsmouth Avenue, Stratham, NH 03885.

Robert T. Bromage

DOVER - Robert T. Bromage, 69, of Portland Avenue, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at his home.

Born Sept. 21, 1930, in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of Harry and Alice (Molloy) Bromage.

He served in the Navy during the Korean conflict. He worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Local 976, Portsmouth.

He was a former member of the Hartford Lodge of Elks in West Lebanon, a member of the Dover Lodge of Elks No. 184, and a member the American Legion Post No. 8, Dover.

He is survived by his dear friend Inez Bromage of Lee, and his brother, Paul Haggerty, of Phoenix.

BROMAGE - Robert T. Bromage, 69, of Portland Avenue, Dover, died July 29, 2000. Visiting hours will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, followed by a funeral prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be private in Lee Hill Cemetery, Lee. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Helene Calivas

DAPHNE, Ala. - Helene Calivas, 51, died July 29, 2000.

Born Feb. 10, 1949, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Lulu and the late William Calivas.

She is formerly of Dover and Portsmouth.

Survivors include a son, Mark Calivas; a brother, Chris Calivas; and a niece and nephew, Jennifer and Jonathan Calivas. Services will be held in Daphne, Ala.
