Catherine M. Gum

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Catherine M. (Greeley) Gum, 69, of 20 Edgewood Road, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1930, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Merton and Frances (Shea) Greeley.

She was a graduate of the Holy Rosary High School in Rochester, N.H., and a communicant of St. James Church in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of William K. "Ben" Gum for 46 years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Diane Gum of Dover; one son, William K. Gum Jr. and his wife, Amy, of Portsmouth; one grandson, Christian Gum of Portsmouth; three sisters, Patricia Storer of Kittery, Diane McAskill and her husband, Edward, of Kingston, and Denise Cloutier of Portsmouth; one step-brother, Donald Spaulding, of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Sara Jean Gum.

GUM - Mrs. Catherine M. (Greeley) Gum, 69, of 20 Edgewood Road, Portsmouth, died Sunday, July 30, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours at the chapel are from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Tuesday). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Giving Program, Gail Singer Memorial Bldg., 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Carlene F. Perusse

HAMPTON - The funeral for Carlene F. Perusse, 85, of 14 Farm Lane, Seabrook, who died July 27, 2000, was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.

Pastor David Anderson of the Four Corners Church in Seabrook officiated. Jean Goss was organist.

After cremation, interment was in the Elmwood Cemetery on Sunday with the committal service conducted by Pastor Anderson.

Charles W. Chisholm

HAMPTON - Charles W. Chisholm, 68, of 2 Tide Mill Road, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born May 6, 1932, in Malden, Mass., he was the son of the late William D. and Bertha (Wilkins) Chisholm.

He was a graduate of Hampton Academy, Class of 1950, and of Wentworth Institute in Boston. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.

A mason by trade, he was employed by the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local No. 1 of Northern New England. In his retirement, he worked at the Hampton Landfill as a gate attendant.

He was a member of Hampton's American Legion Post No. 35, VFW Post No. 1506, American Association of Retired Persons, National Council of Senior Citizens and the Seniors Coalition.

He was predeceased by a sister, Edith Chisholm, who died in 1998.

He leaves cousins including the Mulcahy, Cushing and Chisholm families.

CHISHOLM - Charles W. Chisholm of 2 Tide Mill Road, Hampton, died July 28, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be at the High Street Cemetery in Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110.

Patricia M. Ezzell

ROLLA, Mo. - Patricia M. (Linchey) Ezzell, 59, of 1142 South Rolla St., and formerly of Portsmouth, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at her home.

Born March 16, 1941, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Clark) Linchey, and a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1960.

She had worked for the former JJ Newbury's and the former Wendall's Hardware Store in Portsmouth, and prior to her retirement had been employed at Data General, formerly of Portsmouth, for more than 10 years.

She was also a former member of the Women of the Moose in Portsmouth.

Survivors include four children, Jacqueline Brooks of Standish, Maine, Jill DeVault of Rolla, Mo., Stephen Lantz of Hampton, and Timothy Lantz of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren, Kimberly DeVault of Rolla, Kendra DeVault of Rolla, Kyle Lantz of Portsmouth, Ryan Lantz of Portsmouth, Aliza Lantz of Portsmouth, Nicholas Lantz of Standish, Brianna Brooks of Standish, and Amanda Brooks of Standish; sisters and brothers, Marion Linchey of Portsmouth, Raymond Green of Newmarket, James Linchey of Kittery Point and William Galligan of Huntsville, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four sisters, Margaret Johnson, Eva Clemmons, Marjorie Slingsby and Mary Linchey; and a brother, Henry Galligan.

EZZELL - Patricia M. (Linchey) Ezzell, 59, of 1142 South Rolla St., Rolla, Mo., died July 27, 2000. Memorial services are incomplete and will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Foster L. Greene

HAMPTON - Foster L. Greene, 91, of 340 Lafayette Road, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at The Partridge House after a sudden illness.

Born Feb. 12, 1909, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of the late Edgar Wilson and Maude (Case) Greene.

He attended Amherst College, Amherst, Mass. He was the proprietor of Foster's Clothing Store in Hampton from 1949-1954. He then worked as a sales representative for several years before opening a small accounting office called General Business Services, which he operated until his retirement in 1975.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church where he volunteered as a greeter and was superintendent of the Sunday school classes for a number of years.

He was a former member of the Hampton Kiwanis Club, volunteered as a referee and coach with the Hampton Youth Association in baseball and football, enjoyed playing golf and was a former member of the Abenaqui Country Club. Years ago he was active with the Hampton Players Group at the old Hampton Playhouse.

He was the husband of Elizabeth (Harris) Greene.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Deborah G. Sullivan, and her husband, Gene, of Hampton; two sisters, Eleanor Smith of Rumford, R.I., and Betty Skinner Hazen of Salem, Mass.; three grandchildren, Timothy Sullivan, Amy Jerome and Brooke Sullivan; one great-grandson, Owen M. Sullivan; and several nieces and nephews.

GREENE - Foster L. Greene, of 340 Lafayette Road, Hampton, died July 28, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Harry B. Knox

HAMPTON FALLS - Harry B. Knox, 79, of 4 Cedar Road, North Hampton, died July 26 in Portsmouth.

Largely attended funeral services were held Saturday from the Hampton Falls Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Lawrence officiating. Organist was Barbara Flocco. The eulogy was given by Lynn Garland of Deerfield, longtime associate with the 4-H of Rockingham Extension Service. Hymns were sung by Wayne and Irene Frost, and Jeff Hastings.

In attendance were many church members and members of the Rockingham Extension service.

Burial followed at the Knox Family cemetery in Allenstown, where the Rev. Lawrence did the committal prayers.

The bearers were Joseph Boyle, George Olson, Ronald Sparkowich, Craig Gidley, Paul Chevrette and Wayne Frost.

Helen Levy

NEWTON CENTER, Mass. - Helen (Alpers) Levy, 98, widow of Judge Samuel Levy, of 1106 Center St., died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at her home.

Born July 19, 1902, in Salem, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Bessie (Collier) Alpers.

She was formerly employed in the Registry of Deeds for Salem, Mass. She was a life member of Temple Israel, Portsmouth, and the Hadassah.

Survivors include three daughters, Carol Levy of New York City, Eleanor Packer and her husband, Carl, of Newton, Mass., and Marjorie Beck of New York City; two grandsons, Scott and Paul Packer of Colorado; a granddaughter, Julie Packer of Melrose, Mass.; and a great-granddaughter, Amy Packer of Colorado.

LEVY - Mrs. Helen (Alpers) Levy, 98, of 1106 Center St., Newton Center, Mass., died July 29, 2000. Graveside services will be held at noon today (Monday), at Temple Israel Cemetery, Banfield Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Memorial observance will be private. Donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2042 Beacon St., Waban, MA 02468. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Mary N. Morin

PORTSMOUTH - Mary N. Morin, 76, of 1438 Islington St., died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1923, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Antonio Piccinni.

She attended local schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth Senior High School.

She was a church member at the Immaculate Conception Church. She was also a member of the VFW and DAV.

She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Roland Morin, and several cousins in the local area.

MORIN - Mary N. Morin, 76, of 1438 Islington St., died, July 29, 2000. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

BARTER - Arline Barter, 83, of 27 Fore Road, Eliot, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Webster at Rye in Rye, N.H. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church of Eliot, State Road, Eliot, Maine. Burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Park. Arrangements by J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Lyla I. Harris

HAMPTON - Services for Lyla I. Harris, 71, wife of Richard A. Harris of 110 Lafayette Road, Hampton Falls, were held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton. The Rev. Wesley Burwell, chaplain of Seacoast Hospice, officiated.

Words of remembrance were offered by Jason Kidd. "Amazing Grace" was sung by Lynsey Glover, Diana Clarke and Sarah Frost.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with committal services by the Rev. Burwell. Pallbearers were Jerry Stellmach, Robert Jordan, Nathan Harris, Michael Forehand, John Vallier and Richard Osborne.

Mary Louise Grant

HAMPTON - The funeral for Mary Louise Grant, 88, of Stratham Heights Road, Stratham, was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory in Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Star of the Sea Church in Salisbury, Mass. The Rev. Robert Morgan, pastor, was celebrant. Marie Shattuck was organist and Nancy Sweeney was soloist.

Pallbearers were Mike McDonnell, Neil O'Brien, Mike DeMattia and George Gomes. Burial will be in the Gulf Pines Memorial Park, Englewood, Fla.

Horace E. Billings

KITTERY POINT - Horace "Hod" E. Billings, 95, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at the Mark H. Wentworth Nursing Home in Portsmouth.

Born, July 25, 1905, in Kittery Point, he was the son of the late Charles and Hattie (Lewis) Billings. He attended school in Kittery Point, and later worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, as a messenger and a supervisor in the supply department. He retired in 1962 after 41 years of loyal service and hard work at the shipyard.

He was a life member of the Naval Lodge 184, AF&AM of Kittery. He was also a member of St. Mark's Methodist Church of Kittery.

He was the husband of the late Mildred Smart, who died in February of 1999, for 68 years.

Over the years, he and his wife enjoyed their winter home in Florida, where he spent time walking and riding his bicycle. He also loved his home and surroundings during the spring, summer and fall in Kittery Point.

Survivors include his three beloved nephews, Frank R. Fate and his wife, Carol, of Kittery; Donald G. Fate and his wife, Patty, and William C. Smart and his wife, Judy, all of Kittery Point; five grandnieces; and three grandnephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert.

BILLINGS - Mr. Horace "Hod" E. Billings, 95, of Kittery Point, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth. There will be no funeral services or visitation. A graveside burial and committal service will be held at a later date. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Summer Fund of St. Mark's Methodist Church of Kittery, 62 Government St., Kittery, ME 03904. The Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, is handling arrangements.

Arline Barter

ELIOT - Arline Barter, 83, of 27 Fore Road, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Webster at Rye after a period of illness.

Born June 20, 1917, in Danvers, Mass., she was the daughter of Everett and Lillian Demsey Witham. She attended locals schools and graduated from Danvers High School.

She was married to her late husband, Robert Barter, in 1939. They made their home in Norfolk, Va., and moved to Eliot in 1955, where they raised their family.

Active in local service organizations, she was the founder of the Eliot Senior Citizens program and was involved in many other organizations, including American Legion Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Lions Club, and her church, the First Congregational Church of Eliot, where she was a member of the Ladies Circle.

Survivors include her children, Elaine Burnham Plaisted and her husband, Richard, of Eliot; and Robert and Nancy Barter of Berwick; a sister, Winona Parsons of Kittery; a brother, Harry Witham of Boxford, Mass.; three grandchildren, Robert W. Barter III, of Gray, Maine; Denise Lamere of Center Barnstead, N.H.; and John Goodrich of Leaf River, Ill.; and seven great-grandchildren.

BARTER - Arline Barter, 83, of 27 Fore Road, Eliot, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Webster at Rye in Rye, N.H. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church of Eliot, State Road, Eliot, Maine. Burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Park.

Kenneth T. Hemenway

HAMPSTEAD, N.H. - Kenneth T. Hemenway, 83, of Hampstead, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, N.H., after a period of illness.

Born in Orleans, Vt., he attended area schools. A former Massachusetts resident, he was a retired kitchen supplies salesman.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He volunteered at the N.H. Veterans Hospital in Manchester.

He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Sullivan) Hemenway.

Survivors include his children, Elizabeth Cassedy of Hingham, Mass.; Kenneth, of Anchorage, Alaska; Linda Mistovich of Londonderry, N.H.; Susan Harrington of Hampstead; and David Hemenway of Quincy, Mass.; a brother, Jim, of Vermont; a sister, Gretta Morrison of Michigan; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
