Dorothy M. Shaw

HAMPTON - Dorothy M. Shaw, 84, of 97 Winnacunnet Road, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Manchester.

Born Dec. 24, 1915, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Hollis M. Shaw and Frances (Hopkins) Shaw, formerly of Winthrop, Maine. She resided in Hampton most of her life.

She graduated from Amesbury High School in 1934 and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with the class of 1942. She was a veteran serving in the Women's Army Corps during World War II.

She worked for many years as a dental hygienist in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and worked for more than 15 years for Dr. Paul Harvey in Portsmouth before her retirement.

She is survived by a brother, Hollis M. Shaw Jr. of New Smyrna, Fla.; a sister, Shirley Shaw Smith of Hampton; a cousin, Joan Griffin of Augusta, Maine; a niece and four nephews.

At her request, there will be no visiting hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Irving E. Cote

KITTERY - Irving E. Cote, 77, of Kittery died Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born March 7, 1923, in Caswell, Maine, he was the son of Louis and Idella Cote. He attended schools in Caswell and left for Hartford, Conn., when he was 17 years old to work in the Colt Firearms factory. After a few years, he returned to Caribou, Maine, where he operated a potato farm.

He entered the Army in 1949 and served in the 804th Combat Engineers Unit. After his discharge, he worked in the construction field throughout New England. In 1986, he retired from his last construction job at the Seabrook Nuclear Plant. He was a member of the Laborers' Union Local 976 and had resided in Kittery for more than 20 years.

He was an active and accomplished gardener, raising both flowers and vegetables. He also enjoyed talking with people and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include his brothers, Jasper, Preston, and Freeman of Caribou, and Jack and Louis of Stafford Spring, Conn.; his sisters, Helen Doody of Caribou, Betty Robertson of Murray, Ky., and Norma Cunningham of San Antonio.

He was predeceased by a brother and three sisters.

COTE - Irving E. Cote, 77, of Kittery, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 17, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Cemetery in Eliot. Visitation Hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Maine Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011-2194.

David O. Marshall

WALLIS SANDS, Rye - David O. Marshall, 72, husband of Rosemarie (Sterrett) Marshall, of 15 Manor Drive, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at his home.

Born March 14, 1928, in Nashua, he was the son of the late Harold H. and Eva G. (Morrill) Marshall.

He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth; Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion; Senior Friends; and the Rye Over 55 Club.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Rosemary Staples and her husband, Dean, of Eliot, and Debra Sarhanis and her husband, Christos, of Exeter; one son, Daniel Marshall of San Francisco; one grandson, James Tustin of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two granddaughters, Kathryn Sarhanis and Alie Sarhanis, both of Exeter; two brothers, Frank Marshall of Plantation, Fla., and Walter Marshall of Blackshear, Ga.; one sister, Arlene Geer of Nashua; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Herbert Marshall of South Berwick.

MARSHALL - Mr. David O. Marshall, 72, of Wallis Sands, Rye, died July 13, 2000. A memorial remembrance service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church, Miller Avenue, Portsmouth. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Portsmouth Regional Home, Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St. No. 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Curtis Todd Goodwin

KITTERY - A funeral service for Curtis Todd Goodwin who died on July 1, 2000, in Springvale, Maine, was held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery on July 8, 2000. The Rev. Gail Kindberg from the First Congregational Church of Eliot offered words of remembrance and hope as she officiated at the service.

A solo by close family friend Michele Legere was performed. The service continued at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery where the Rev. Kindberg offered a prayer of committal and Ms. Legere again performed a music solo.

Pallbearers were Mr. Goodwin's brothers, Brent Goodwin and Justin Goodwin; his stepfather, Kenneth Tylock; Robert and Allen Dore; and father-in-law, Nel Sylvain.

Mrs. Goodwin and their two children thank everyone for the support and kindness shown to their family during this time of sorrow.

Gregory J. Colburn Sr.

KENNEBUNK, Maine - Funeral services for Gregory J. Colburn Sr., 59, of 96 Farragut Way, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at St. Raphael's Church, in Kittery. Father Real Nadeau, pastor, officiated.

Readings were given by Bridgid Mannion and Ed Huntress. Cynthia Lane and Gregory J. Colburn Jr. presented gifts. Philip Sousa was the acolyte. Cantor was Margaret Gallagher and organist was Nancy Jones.

In attendance were communicants of St. Raphael's Church. The flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Colburn's widow, Mary F. (Littlepage) Colburn.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Bearers were Gregory J. Colburn Jr., Cynthia Lane, Bridgid Mannion and Buddy Mannion. Wake services were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Wednesday, by Father Nadeau.

Merle E. Warrell

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Merle E. Warrell, 84, of Zephyrhills, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Westbrook Manor.

He was born in Waterford, Vt. He was a resident of Zephyrhills for 19 years, coming from Eliot in 1981.

He was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Vermont, where he majored in bookkeeping and accounting; and also a graduate of Cooks & Bakers School in Newport, R.I. He was employed at Simplex Wire and Cable.

A veteran of the Navy Submarine Corps, he served in World War II on the submarine USS Snapper.

He was a member of Moose Lodge No. 2276 in Zephyrhills, and First United Methodist Church in Zephyrhills.

He was the husband of Arlene (Farnham) Warrell of Zephyrhills for 60 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard D. and wife Joyce of Preston, Conn.; and Stephen R. and wife Peggy of Zephyrhills; a daughter, Susan J. and husband Gerald Whittemore of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Ralph and wife Kay Warrell of St. Johnsbury, and Benjamin J. Warrell of Zephyrhills; two sisters, Hazel and husband Wallace Coe of Deltona, Fla.; and Edith Aldrich of Zephyrhills; two brothers-in-law, Harry and wife Barbara Farnham of Kingswood, Texas; and Stoughton R. and wife Charlotte Farnham of Shorthill, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by both parents, George and Jennie Warrell, and a son, James S. Warrell.

A graveside service will be announced at a later date, with interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot.

Elizabeth Jewell Ballard

PORTSMOUTH - Elizabeth (Lee) Jewell Ballard, 77, of 38 Haven Road, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Portsmouth Hospital.

Born July 11, 1923, in Bowdoinham, Maine, she was the daughter of John P. and Bertha F. Jewell. She was the wife of the late Vernon L. Ballard, former Portsmouth Hospital chief executive officer, who died in 1989.

She was educated in Wellesley, Mass. and graduated from Bates College in 1945. She remained active with Bates alumni and the Bates John P. Jewell Scholarship Fund until the time of her death.

She was the founder and first executive director of Area Home Care and Family Services of Portsmouth. Following her retirement from the agency in 1989, she remained on the board of directors in various capacities including president, secretary and treasurer. The agency office was dedicated in her honor as The Ballard Building in 1998.

She was also a member and former president of the board of directors of Seacoast Hospice. She volunteered with A Safe Place and was a member of the Portsmouth Women's College Club, Portsmouth Regional Hospital Guild and numerous civic organizations. She was selected as the recipient of the United Way Richard F. Lockhart Memorial Award in 1999.

She was a member and former religious education director of the South Church of Portsmouth. She lived life to the fullest and enjoyed an abundance of friends throughout the Seacoast area.

She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Anne and Robert Santulli of Portsmouth; her son and his wife, Bruce and Karen Ballard of Flower Mound, Texas; her grandchildren, Thomas and Philip Sean Roberts and Sarah and Ryan Ballard; her brother and his wife, Malcolm and Lucille Jewell of Bowdoinham; and many nieces and nephews.

BALLARD - Mrs. Elizabeth J. Ballard, 77, of 38 Haven Road, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000. Memorial services at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, 292 State St., Portsmouth, with reception to follow. Friends invited. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Area Home Care, The Ballard Building, 1320 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Lucy M. Pinkerton

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. - Lucy M. Pinkerton, 81, died Sunday, July 9, 2000.

She was born March 10, 1919, in Eastport, Maine.

She was a teacher and librarian in secondary education.

Survivors include a sister, Mae Keenan of Beverly, Mass.; and a niece, Diane DiMaggio, of Beverly.

Mareah D. Royal

CENTENARY Ind. - Mareah Dawn Royal, infant daughter of George F. "Rick" Royal III and Donna J. Hiett Royal, of Centenary, died at 12:17 p.m., Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind. She was born the same day.

In addition to her parents, she is mourned by two sisters, Aimee Todd and Kirrsten Todd; a brother, Matthew McKown; paternal grandparents, George F. and Mary P. Royal, of Hampton; paternal great-grandparents, Norman and Martha Connell, of Sullivan, Ind.; aunts and uncles, Chuck and Billie Jean Thomas of Paris, Ill.; Elizabeth and Mike Akers of St. Bernice, Ind.; Julie Ann Royal of Champaign, Ill.; Patricia Elaine Royal of Hampton; and Eric Robert Royal of Hampton.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Donald and Marie Hiett and paternal great-grandmother, Reah Connell.

ROYAL - Mareah Dawn Royal, the infant daughter of George F. "Rick" Royal III and Donna J. Hiett Royal of Centenary, Ind., died Tuesday, July 11, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 15, in the Walnut Grove Chapel, Clinton, Ind., with Father Joseph Villa officiating. There will be no visiting hours. The Karanovich Funeral Home, Clinton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Earl L. Barker

STRATHAM - Earl L. Barker, 83, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Feb. 16, 1917, in Stratham, he was the son of the late Frank H. and Laura (Snell) Barker. He lived most of his life in Stratham. He attended Stratham School and Exeter High School.

In his early years, he worked on many dairy farms, later turning to carpentry work. He retired from the Portsmouth Housing Authority. He continued his carpentry work by doing repair jobs for friends and neighbors.

He was a life member of the Stratham Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Stratham Hill Park Association. He was involved with the Stratham Fair from 1967 as its Grounds Chairman; a member of the Stratham 76'ers; and also a past master and former member of the former Winnicutt Grange No. 170 and present member and overseer of the Ocean Side Grange No. 260, East Rockingham Pomona, N.H. State Grange and National Grange.

He was the husband of Margaret (Drysdale) Barker for 57 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters and their husbands Nancy J. and G. Wayne Sims of Roseland, Fla., and Laura M. and Fred G. McLeod of Panama City, Fla.; a son Leslie W. Barker of North Hampton; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Flora Barker; and five brothers, Nelson Barker, Carmen Barker, Chester Barker, Levi Barker and Donald Barker.

BARKER - Earl L. Barker, 83, died at Exeter Hospital, July 10, 2000. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 13, at the Stratham Community Church. The Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine will be officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stratham Volunteer Fire Department, Fire House, Winnicutt Road, Stratham, NH 03885 or the Stratham Hill Park Assoc., 10 Bunker Hill Ave., Stratham, NH 03885.

Walter J. O'Brien

EPPING - Walter J. O'Brien, 78, of 290 Calef Highway, formerly of Haverhill, Mass., died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Feb. 27, 1922, in Haverhill, Mass., he was the son of the late Walter J. and Ellen F. (Duggan) O'Brien. He was a resident of Haverhill until his retirement in 1974. After his retirement, he resided in Raymond until 1992 and then resided in Epping.

He was educated in the Haverhill school system and was a graduate of Haverhill High School. He was a graduate of the Thompson School of Applied Science at the University of New Hampshire.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a staff sergeant in the Army. He had been employed as a salesman in the Haverhill office of the United Shoe Machinery Co. from 1947 until his retirement in 1974.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, Haverhill, and a member of St. John The Baptist Holy Name Society.

His surviving family members include his three daughters, Joan E. O'Brien of Portsmouth, Marianne B. Fox of Exeter, and Elizabeth E. O'Brien of Bath, Maine; eight grandchildren; his sister, Elaine F. Cronin of Andover, Mass.; and nieces and nephews; and his close friend, Margaret Michelin of Gaylord, Mich.

He was predeceased by his grandson, Michael J. Murphy III; and his brother, John A. O'Brien, a former Haverhill Fire Department captain.

O'BRIEN - Walter J. O'Brien, 78, of 290 Calef Highway, Epping, formerly of Haverhill, Mass., died Monday, July 10, 2000. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, in St. John the Baptist Parish, 114 Lincoln Ave., Haverhill, Mass. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday at the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill.

Hazel Dannis

KITTERY - Hazel Dannis, 74, formerly of Kittery, died Monday, July 10, 2000 at Harbor Home in York.

Born on May 24, 1926, in Danforth, Maine, she was the daughter of the late James and Evie (Kinney) Day. She lived in Kittery for many years with her husband Henry (Hank) Dannis, who died in September of 1999. She was also predeceased by two stepbrothers.

She was an avid crocheter and seamstress, who made many beautiful quilts and afghans. She worked on the production line at Watts Fluid Air Co. in Kittery.

In respect to the wishes of Mr. and Mrs. Dannis, there will be no funeral services or visitation hours. Those who wish, may make a donation to medical science in the hopes of enhancing the quality in medicine and medical research.
