Daniel F. MacKinnon VII

COLEBROOK, N.H. - Daniel Finley MacKinnon VII, 78, died Sunday morning, June 25, 2000, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Concord, N.H. He had been a patient there for approximately 10 days.

Born Dec. 7, 1921, in Lowell, Mass., he was the second son of Daniel Finley MacKinnon VI and Alice Snow MacKinnon. He spent his formative years in Lowell.

In 1937, at the height of the Depression and at the age of 16, he graduated from Lowell High School. After his graduation, he worked in a rayon mill in Lowell and joined the National Guard.

On his 20th birthday, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and shortly thereafter, his guard unit was called to active duty in the Army. He served with distinction as a field artillery gunnery sergeant in the European Theater and was twice wounded at the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. He never spoke of his war experience.

Before his overseas assignment he met Josephine Hill Lowell. They married in October 1943. Together, they begat and raised seven children.

After his return from the war, he attended the University of New Hampshire, and in 1950, he began his employment with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a fishery biologist at Craig Brook, Maine. In 1954, he was transferred to the York Pond fish hatchery on the Kilkenny Plantation in Berlin, N.H., where he served as assistant manager and then manager of the facility. Nearly three decades later, at the time of his retirement, he had received frequent recognition and commendations for his numerous inventions, which increased productivity and efficiency in the operations of federal fish hatcheries and for his discoveries concerning the course of kidney disease in brook trout.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and taught his children the ways of the forest. He loved the stars and all things in the natural world. He always kept a pristine vegetable garden and respectfully declined affiliation with any church.

For a number of years, he was active in Masonic circles and was a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite.

After his retirement, he settled in Colebrook, N.H. There, with his wife Pauline, he devoted his time and energy to renovating their home overlooking Dixville Notch; making maple syrup in season; growing the best spuds in Coos County; planting and maintaining a few acres of Christmas trees; and admiring the mountains he so dearly loved. He welcomed all who came to gossip by the fire, tending always to family and friends, most of whom went home with gifts of real maple syrup or the finest of Coos County potatoes.

In life he always believed in the power of knowledge and in the strength of the individual; he approached his work with a passion for accuracy and for perfect excellence. Frequently on the cutting edge, he was the personification of his clan's motto: "Fortune favors the bold." His Celtic roots resounded in his love of poetry, which he often recited from memory to family and friends.

In death, he will be sadly missed and remembered by his present wife, Pauline MacKinnon of Colebrook; by his first wife, Josephine L. MacKinnon of Lee, N.H.; by his children: John Swain Snow MacKinnon and his wife, Sylvia, of Warwick, New Zealand; Daniel Finley MacKinnon VIII and his wife, Denise, of Independence, La.; Bonnie J. Winona of Portsmouth; Alice M. MacKinnon of South Lee, N.H.; Ann E. MacKinnon of Lee, N.H.; Mary R. MacKinnon of Sebago Lake, Maine; and William A. MacKinnon and his wife, Sherry, of McMillan, Mich.; by Pauline's children, his stepchildren: Steven Roy of Rutland, Vt., Ellen Dennet of Strafford, N.H., and Laura Reola of Lee, N.H.

He will be missed also by his dear sister, Margaret Waller of Hugo, Minn., and by his brother, Jack MacKinnon of Dallas. He will also be missed by his grandchildren: Ngaere MacKinnon of Wellington, New Zealand, Jessica MacKinnon of Guam, Ian MacKinnon and Daniel MacKinnon IX, of Independence, La.; Elizabeth and Hilda MacKinnon of Lee, N.H.; Krister Rollins of Sebago Lake, Maine, the to-be-born child of William and Sherry MacKinnon of McMillan, Mich.; and one great-grandchild, Mikki MacKinnon of Guam. Also by his step-grandchildren: Alyssa, Gregory, and Nicholas Roy of Rutland, Vt., and Nicole and Natasha Reola of Lee, N.H.
