Francis C. Moore

PORTSMOUTH - Francis Cochran Moore, 88, of 346 Pleasant St., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home.

Born Jan. 21, 1912, in Dover, he was the son of Frank C. and Helen B. (Carr) Moore.

He was a long-term resident of Goffstown, N.H. and lived in Rollinsford.

He was a graduate of Amherst (Mass.) High School, Class of 1929. He continued his education, becoming a graduate of Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute, Class of 1933.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy Seabees for two years in the Pacific. He served 27 years in the U.S. Naval Reserves.

He was employed as a civil engineer for the New Hampshire Water Resources board, retiring in 1975. After his retirement, he continued to survey and design septic systems.

He was a strong, gentle man loved by many. He had a great love of animals, gardening and other outdoor activities. In later years, he enjoyed corresponding with his high school classmates.

He was the husband of the late Lillian I. (Wolfe) Moore. The couple was married 52 years.

Survivors include one son, William H. Moore and his wife Carolyn, of Goffstown; one daughter, Melissa E. Merrill and her husband Christopher, of Rollinsford; five grandchildren, Moriah Moore and Eliza Moore, both of Rainbow City, Ala.; Mark Merrill, Todd Merrill, and Lisa Marie Merrill, all of Rollinsford; and one great-grandchild, Darienne E. Merrill of Seabrook.

MOORE - Mr. Francis C. Moore, 88, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, died Sunday, June 18, 2000. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday June 30, 2000, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in memory of Mr. Moore to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA 01609-2280; or to the National WWII Memorial, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 501, Arlington, VA 22201; or to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Mary C. O'Malley

ELIOT - Largely attended funeral services for Mary C. O'Malley, 86, of Pleasant Street, were held June 15, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Raphael Church by the Rev. Real J. Nadeau. Readings were given by Timothy Thomas and Daniel Ripley, grandsons of the deceased. Hymns were sung by Elizabeth Barcomb and the St. Raphael Choir. The Eucharistic gifts were presented by her daughters Catherine Thomas and Virginia Morgan. The Eulogy was delivered by Kathryn O'Malley daughter-in-law of Mrs. O'Malley.

Burial was in the family lot in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with Fr. Nadeau conducting the committal. Bagpiper was Michael Mone. Pallbearers were Timothy Thomas, Terrance Thomas, Daniel Ripley, John O'Malley, Garrett O'Malley, Kyle O'Malley, all grandsons, and Joseph Lokken and Paul Dufault. Honorary bearer was Captain Shane Morgan.

Lester F. Crossman

DANVERS, Mass. - At 5 p.m. on June 28, there will be a memorial tribute for sportsman/businessman Lester F. Crossman of Danvers, Mass., who died on Oct. 21, 1999. The memorial will take place at Gibney Field, Myopia Hunt Club, Route 1A, Hamilton, Mass. In accordance with his wishes, a polo game for the Lester Crosswman Trophy will be held after the tribute. The trophy was originally established to celebrate 50 years of his devotion to and promotion of the game of polo. Refreshments will be served throughout the game. All who knew him and his family are cordially invited to attend by his children, Carl L. Crossman of Portsmouth, and Christine Crossman Vining, of Marblehead, Mass.; his grandson Jon Frederick Vining of Danvers, and his siblings, Everett Crossman of Hamilton, Mass., Mrs. Chester (Evelyn) Harris and Mrs. Daniel (Elsie) McKinnon, both of Danvers.

Fenwick W. Clark

WELLS - Fenwick W. "Fen" Clark, 78, of Branch Road, died suddenly Monday, June 19, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Oct. 13, 1921 in Exeter, he was the son of Charles and Sarah Winslow Clark Sr., and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving stateside during World War II.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and rose through the ranks in Shop 06 to become the youngest superintendent in the nation. He retired in 1971 after more than 30 years of service at the yard.

After his retirement, he operated several small businesses, including building houses in the Branch area and sharpening saw blades.

An active community member, he was a charter member and former deputy chief of the Wells Branch Fire Association, a veteran member of the Wells Fire Department and lifetime member of the York County Firefighters Association. He was co-founder of the Wells-Ogunquit Little League, member of Ocean Lodge No. 142 AF & AM, the Wells Branch Community League, active member of the Trailblazers Club in Wells, served on the board of directors and clerk of the Pine Hill Cemetery Association, past member of the Wells Charter Commission, past member of the Wells Library Board of Directors, for many years drove for Meals on Wheels, and is a past member of the Cape Neddick Country Club.

He was an avid gardener, tending a vegetable garden and growing peaches and apples.

Survivors include his wife of 1-1/2 years, Joan S. Mathusa Clark of Wells; three sons, Richard C. Clark, Brian F. Clark and Timothy A. Clark, all of Wells; a brother, Charles M. Clark Jr. of South Berwick; three grandchildren; and 11 step-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Maellen P. Clark, who died in 1997, and a son, Christopher Clark, who died in 1955.

CLARK - Fenwick W. "Fen" Clark, 78, of Branch Road, Wells, died Monday, June 19, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at Pine Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Daniel Lamberston, officiating. Memorials in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2208, Augusta, ME 04338-2208.

Raymond O. Pierce

PIERCE - Memorial services for Mr. Raymond O. Pierce, Sr., 87, of 6 Stonecroft, were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, on Monday. Rev. William Gardei, officiated. VFW services were conducted by Emerson Hovey Post No. 168, including Cmdr. John McCarthy and Chaplain Mark C. Anthony. Also assisting in services were past District 7 Cmdr. Reginald Wright; Post Advocate Carl B. Walton; Sr. Vice Cmdr. Paul Schurman; Quartermaster Paul Cushing; past State Cmdr. Harry Ladderbush; Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 A.L. Cmdr. Joseph Shaw and Color Guard George McCall.

In attendance were representatives from the Emerson Hovey Post No. 168, VFW and the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rev. Gardei.

An honor guard was formed at the gravesite by representatives from Emerson Hovey Post 168 VFW including past State Cmdr. Harry Ladderbush and Sr. Vice Cmdr. Paul Schurman and representatives from Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 A.L., including Cmdr. Joseph Shaw and Color Guard George McCall.

Taps were sounded and the American Flag was presented to Mr. Pierce's widow, Mrs. Helen P. (Booker) Pierce by Sr. Vice. Cmdr. Schurman.

John D. Haughton

HAMPTON - John D. Haughton, 84, of 76 Locke Road, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born April 5, 1916, in Exeter, he was the son of the late Victor M. and Jenny (Hodges) Haughton.

He was a graduate of Emerson School in Exeter, Brewster Academy of Wolfeboro, and the Wentworth Institute of Boston. He lived in Hampton for many years.

He worked as an electrician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years. Previous to this he worked for Otis Cammet Electric and Herb Troffater Electric.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 32 of Exeter.

He enjoyed his family, hunting and fishing, and was a ham radio buff.

He was the husband of Dorothy M. (Cottrell) Haughton of Hampton for 55 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, James M. Haughton IV and his wife, Diane, of Hampton; three daughters, Jane A. Hutchins of Exeter, Maryanne Tedeschi of Raymond, and Patti Haughton of Windham, Maine; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Annie Haughton of Seabrook; one sister, Nanci Godfrey of Concord; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, John M. Haughton; and two brothers, James Haughton III and Victor M. Haughton.

Mary E. Henshaw

CAPE NEDDICK - Mary Elizabeth (Carey) Henshaw of Cape Neddick and formerly of North Andover, Mass., died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at her home, at 78 years of age.

Born Oct. 10, 1921, in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of Ralph and Eliza R. (Young) Carey. She graduated and did her post-graduate studies at Essex Agricultural School in Middleton, Mass. She was a member of the Essex Agricultural Society for over 68 years. She received the Outstanding Senior Citizen Award of Essex County in 1989 and was the Grand Representative to Arkansas in 1980. She was the Eastern Star Grand Electra in 1976, past Matron of the Andover Chapter 187 Order of Eastern Star, member of St. George's Episcopal Church in York, and member of North Andover Patrons of Husbandry.

She was known for always having flowers in her hair, a butterfly on her shoulder and a smile on her face.

She worked at Brooks School in North Andover for 18 years until her retirement. She was a past member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in North Andover for 40 years, where she was also in the choir. She has been a member of St. James and its choir for six years as well as a member of St. George's Church in York.

She is survived by her husband Lenley Manning Henshaw of York, and formerly of North Andover; one son, Ralph W. and his wife, Priscilla, of Methuen, Mass.; six daughters, Wendy A. and her husband, Richard Thornton, of Littleton, Co.; Gail N. and her husband, William Dickson, of Groveland, Mass.; Virginia J. Henshaw-Labelle and her husband, Bill, of Buxton, Maine; Rebecca M. D'Erisco of Epping; Heather D. Henshaw of Haverhill, Mass.; and Holly Henshaw of Brookline, N.H.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She is also predeceased by a daughter, Mary E. Florin.

HENSHAW - Mary Elizabeth (Carey) Henshaw of Cape Neddick, Maine and formerly of North Andover, Mass., died Tuesday, June 20, 2000. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Groveland, Mass. Burial will follow in Ridgewood Cemetery in North Andover. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday at the Merton E. Roberts Jr. and Conte Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Georgetown, Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Frank M. Schanda

NEWMARKET - Frank M. Schanda, 76, of Maplecrest, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at his home in Newmarket.

Born Dec. 19, 1923 in Kingston, he was the son of Frank and Mabel (Morrison) Schanda. He was a lifelong resident of Newmarket and a 1941 graduate of Newmarket High School. Following high school, he went to the University of New Hampshire to study forestry, but left to join the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific from 1942-44 with the First Marine Division at Guadal Canal.

In 1950 he began working at the Macallen Company, then Suflex/Essex Group in Newmarket. While there he was a division manager until his retirement in 1987.

Upon retiring he ran a successful cord wood business. He was also an associate of F.F. & S.

His life revolved around politics. He was involved at the local, county and state levels. For 25 years, he was a Newmarket selectman and remained active on the Newmarket Housing Commission.

He was in his second term as a state representative and was chair of the Rockingham County Transportation Commission.

He was a 58-year member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 in Newmarket, a member of Rising Star Lodge No. 47 F&AM in Newmarket and a member of Lamprey Aerie No. 1934 F.O.E. also in Newmarket.

He loved hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling on the league in Newmarket.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Heath and her husband Riley, of Lee; a granddaughter, Colleen Martha Heath, of Lee; three brothers, John Schanda of Scottsdale, Ariz., Richard Schanda and Joseph Schanda, both of Newmarket; three sisters, Frances Allen of Epping, Barbara Wilsterman of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Marie Samora of San Bruno, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Martha (Turbaville) Schanda, who died in 1998.

SCHANDA - Frank M. Schanda, 76, of Maplecrest, Newmarket, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. American Legion services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday from the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home with the Rev. David Wuori, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. Family flowers only. If desired, memorials may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Eliot N. Fernald Jr

PITTSFIELD, N.H. - Eliot N. Fernald Jr., 75, of Dowboro Road, died at his home, Saturday, June 17, 2000, following a brief illness.

Born in Eliot, he was the son of Eliot Sr. and Hazel (Smith) Fernald. He lived in Pittsfield for 54 years.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was employed for 25 years with the state of New Hampshire. He was a charter member and past commander of the VFW Memorial Post No. 4029, in Pittsfield.

He is survived by his wife Doris (Wood) Fernald.

Other surviving family members include one daughter, Brenda Abbott, of Pittsfield; a grandson, Jeffrey Abbott of North Providence, R.I.; two brothers, Bernard Fernald of North Berwick, and Donald Fernald of Mystic, Conn.; five sisters, Virginia Bennett of Lebanon, Maine, Grace Locke of South Berwick, Marilyn LaPointe of Eliot, Gladys Butterworth of Kittery Point, and Glenna Brown of Hampton.

FERNALD - Eliot N. Fernald Jr., 75, of Dowboro Road, Pittsfield, N.H., died Saturday, June 17, 2000. There will be one hour of visitation at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, in the Perkins Funeral Home Inc., 60 Main St., Pittsfield. Following visitation, a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Henry Frost, pastor of the Loudon Center Free Will Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Floral Park Cemetery in Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Pittsfield Fire & Rescue Squad, 33 Catamount Road, Pittsfield, NH 03263. A register is available on the Internet at Legacy.com. The Perkins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ralph E. Jones

CONCORD - Ralph E. Jones, 68, of 15 McKee Drive, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Concord Hospital, after a long illness.

Born on July 11, 1931, in Erie, Pa., he was the son of Sydney and Myrtle (Campbell) Jones. He was an Army veteran and did occupational duty in Germany. He was a delivery truck driver for Central Paper Products Company in Manchester for 30 years.

Family members include one brother, John Jones of Manchester, N.H.; four sisters, Janette Loos and Florence Jones, both of Manchester, Gladys Lockhart of Portsmouth and Constance Jones of Ft. Myers, Fla.

MILLER - James Hugh Miller, 88, of 64 McDonough St., died June 17, 2000. Services will be held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Visiting hours are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. American Legion Post No. 6 will conduct services at 6 p.m. Family flowers only please. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association of NH, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032. Or to Portsmouth Regional Home Health and Hospice Services, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

McGrath - Frances "Pansy" J. McGrath, 90, of Webster at Rye, died Saturday, June 17, 2000. Family members include one son, William F. Cass of Eliot; and one daughter, Geraldine C. Eastler of Exeter; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

James H. Miller

Portsmouth - James Hugh Miller, 88, of 64 McDonough St., passed away Saturday, June 17, 2000, at his home after a period of failing health.

Born July 8, 1911 in Chapman, Maine, he was the son of Charles and Effie (Delano) Miller.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of American Legion Post No. 6.

For a time he worked for the Badger Rand Co., and then went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he retired from Shop 72.

He was the husband of Helen (Waterhouse) Miller for 54 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Charles H. Miller of Amarillo, Texas, and Kenneth E. Miller of Portsmouth; one daughter, Sandra Corrow of Ashland; five grandchildren; five great grand children; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five brothers and sisters.
