Ruth Jackson

RYE - Miss Ruth Jackson, 105, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at the Webster Home in Rye, where she had lived for one year.

She had previously resided for eight years with her niece and her husband, Jinny and John Muniz, in Hampton. Before that, she lived in Amesbury, Mass., more than 30 years.

Her life spanned three centuries. On her 105th birthday last November, she was the honored guest at a celebration given by the Webster Home and her family, which was attended by large numbers of friends and family, as well as town officials. She clearly enjoyed her status as the oldest living person in all the areas of her life - church, town, college and the mission field.

Born Nov. 19, 1894, in New York City, she was the daughter of Henry E.D. and Sallie (Young) Jackson. Raised in Westfield, N.J., she graduated in 1915 from Wells College in Aurora, N.Y.

In 1918, she and her sister Rachel went to join friends in the Arabian mission of the Reformed Church of America, where they began their life of service as teachers in a newly formed Girls School in Busrah, Iraq. At that time, there were no schools for girls. In the mission schools, they taught students all the basics in Arabic, as well as daily instruction in the English they would later need as the region developed.

Ruth was later transferred to Bahrein in the Persian Gulf, where she was principal of the Girls' School and visited with the local women in their homes. After 40 years of work, both sisters retired in 1961. They traveled extensively in the United States, sharing their experiences with churches that sponsored them. They made their home with their sister, Helen Jackson Bailey (Mrs. Samuel R. Bailey Sr.) for several years.

A skilled raconteur, Miss Jackson delighted her family and friends with stories of the people and events during her years in the Middle East. She marveled at the changes that took place in the world during her lifetime, not the least of which was the travel time required from her mission station to the United States. The journey took several weeks by steamer until airplanes eventually shortened the trip to one day.

She was formerly active in the Main Street Congregational Church in Amesbury, and was a past president of the Whittier Home. She was a major philanthropist in church, educational institutions throughout the world, and the Reformed Church of America.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence B. Jackson and Raymond D. Jackson; two sisters, Helen Jackson Bailey and Rachel Jackson; three nieces, Helen Ruth J. Christensen, Helen Bailey Johnson of Amesbury, and Nancy J. Cordts; and a nephew, Samuel R. Bailey of Amesbury.

Her greatest delight was in her large family, and she was much beloved by all of them.

Survivors include her nieces, Margery Bailey Follansbee of Harpswell, Maine, Virginia Bailey Muniz of Hampton, and Jean Jackson Groff of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 24 grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as many of the next generation.

JACKSON - Miss Ruth Jackson, 105, died peacefully June 14, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, at the Main Street Congregational Church, Amesbury, Mass. Private interment will be in Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Whittier Home, 86 Friend St., Amesbury, MA 01913, or to the Main Street Congregational Church, 127 Main St., Amesbury, MA 01913. Arrangements are by Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury.
