William G. Smith

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Known for his keen mind and love of riddles, 95-year-old William "Papa" George Smith died Saturday night, June 10, 2000, in the company of his family at home.

Born Dec. 22, 1904, in Haverhill, Mass., he was the son of George and Bernice Bartlett Smith. He graduated from Haverhill High School and married Ada Alice Curtis in 1932. They resided in Plaistow, N.H., and Bridgeport, Conn., but lived most of their married life in Derry Village, N.H. He later lived in Venice, Fla., Stratham, N.H., and Kittery, Maine.

He owned a heating and plumbing business for 10 years in Derry and worked for Gannon Oil Co., also of Derry, before retiring in 1968. He also worked in Shop 17 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II.

He is survived by a son, Paul W. Smith, and his wife, Suzanne Gagnon-Smith, of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Patricia Rodgers, and her husband, Lawrence ,of Williamsville, Va.; an adopted son, Curtis Goodridge, and his wife, Theresa, of Bradford, Maine; a half-brother, George Smith, of Portland and Peaks Island Maine; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1982; a sister Evelyn Smith Curtis; and two brothers, Clifford Smith and Kenneth Smith.

SMITH - William "Papa" George Smith, 95, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Saturday, June 10, 2000, in the company of his family at home. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St. in Exeter, N.H. The Rev. Andrew Gilman of Stratham, a longtime family friend, will officiate. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Newton, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sentara Homecare Services, 535 Independence Way, Chesapeake, VA, 23320.

Mitchell L. Webber

NEW HAMPTON - Mitchell L. Webber, 57, of 572 Old Bristol Road, died June 10, 2000, at Brigham and Woman's Hospital in Boston, Mass., after a long illness.

Born Oct. 3, 1942 in Providence, R.I., Mr. Webber grew up in Pine Point, Maine. He attended the University of Maine.

He was the owner and operator of P.S.I. of New England Inc. for 35 years. He was a member of the United States Army National Guard between Feb. 1964 - Dec. 1969. He was an active member of the American Legion Post No. 33 of Meredith, N.H.

Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Diana (Andrews) Webber of New Hampton, N.H.; one step daughter, Julie Dube of East Kingston, N.H.; two grandchildren; his father, Ludolph Webber of Sidney, Maine; his mother Claire (Garceau) Webber of Nashua, N.H.; one brother, David Webber of Pelham, N.H.; one sister, Marlene Darling of Hudson, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

WEBBER - Mitchell L. Webber, 57, of 572 Old Bristol Road, died June 10, 2000. There are no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 19 at the Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Attn. - Donations Dept., 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements.

Phillip Adams

KITTERY - Philip H. Adams, 84, a well-known businessman and citizen of Kittery, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born April 13, 1916, in Kittery, he was the son of the late Roland and Clara (Hayes) Adams.

He had many accomplishments in his life, but the most notable of these was founding the Kittery Trading Post in 1938, which he operated until 1961. Today, the trading post is still a part of the family.

He was an avid outdoorsman, having fished and hunted throughout Maine, South America and Labrador, Canada. He was very fond of collecting and restoring antique cars.

He was a former member of the Kittery Lions Club.

He was a devoted father and husband as well as a respected member of the Kittery area.

Another of his achievements was watching his surviving grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and enjoy life.

He was the husband of the former Mary O'Brien for 63 years. They were married in Portsmouth in 1937.

In addition to his wife, survivors include 12 children, whom he loved and cherished. Among them are six sons, Philip F. Adams of York, Gary T. Adams of Eliot, Stephen D. Adams of Gorham, Maine, Kim C. Adams and Christopher Adams, both of Kittery, and Mark A. Adams of South Berwick; six daughters, Carol A. Davis of Orlando, Fla., Maureen V. Hutchinson of North Miami Beach, Fla., Mary Catalino of York, Janice D. Grogan of Eliot, Sherry J. Hollingsworth of Lake Wales, Fla., and Lisa J. Adams of Mexico City, Mexico; a sister, Mrs. Margret Horning of Kittery; 38 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sons, Kevin O. Adams and Francis R. Adams; a sister, Shirley Rockwell of Kittery; and two grandchildren.

ADAMS - Mr. Philip H. Adams, 84, of Kittery, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at York Hospital. He was the founder of the Kittery Trading Post in Kittery, and operated the business from its beginning in 1938 until 1961. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Kittery. Visiting hours will be 6-9 p.m. Monday (today) at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 53 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011-2194.

June B. Boone

PORTSMOUTH - June B. (Hodgdon) Boone, 73, of 212 Holly Lane, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born June 1, 1927, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Forrest E. Sr. and Sarah Y. (Gove) Hodgdon. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1945.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a school crossing guard at Sherburne School for 15 years.

She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, and a 35-year member of the Every Other Tuesday Club.

She was the wife of Clifton R. Boone Sr.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three children, Clifton R. Boone Jr. of Cherry Hill, N.J.; Jay B. Boone of Wales, Maine; and Cheryl J. Boone of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; three grandsons, William Moore of Miami; Russell C. Boone of High Bridge, N.J.; and Aaron A. Boone of Watertown, N.Y.; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Priscilla Aubertine of Portsmouth, and Natalie Stevens of Wells, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

BOONE - Mrs. June B. (Hodgdon) Boone, 73, of 212 Holly Lane, Portsmouth, died June 10, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at the chapel. Flowers will be accepted. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Muriel H. Morse

YORK - Muriel Helen Morse, 77, of 134 Beech Ridge Road, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Sept. 28, 1922, on Beech Ridge Road in York, she was the daughter of Edward and Eva (Blaisdell) Grover. She attended local schools and graduated from York High School, Class of 1940, the same year she married her devoted husband of 60 years, Roy Morse.

She raised her family in the home they built on family land just steps from where she was born. She was always proud to say she was born and raised on the "Ridge."

She will be remembered for her love of her family and her cooking. She was employed as a cook at her uncle's restaurant, the Dinner Bell, in York, and at F.W. Woolworth's in Portsmouth as manager of the eating concession. She ended her career at York Hospital, where she was head cook.

She was a member of the women's league in York, the York and Kittery Grange, and the Mocking Bird Club, which she and her friends started 44 years ago.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Patricia and Dennis Barnes of York, and Brenda and Ronald Fee of Andover, Mass.; a brother, Edward Grover Jr. of Kittery; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

MORSE - Muriel H., 77, of 134 Beech Ridge Road, York, died June 10, 2000, at York Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2000, from the York Street Baptist Church. Arrangements are by the Lucas-Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, ME 03909.

Charles V. Knightly

HAMPTON - Charles V. Knightly, 89, formerly of the Dearborn House, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood.

He was born March 14, 1911, in Huntington, Mass., the son of the late Thomas and Josephine (St. Thomas) Knightly. He had resided in Hampton since 1990 coming from Springfield, Mass.

He was a graduate of Commerce High School, Springfield.

Mr. Knightly was the business manager of Berkline Corp. in Springfield for 24 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a former member of Holy Name Parish, Springfield, and a member of it's Holy Name Society and an active volunteer for Catholic Charities Appeal in that parish.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice B. (Conley) Knightly; one son and his wife, Thomas W. and Linda Knightly of Madison, Conn.; one daughter, Mary A. Knightly of Hampton; two grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Knightly of South Hadley, Mass.; one sister, Mary Berry of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Knightly Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the OLMM Outreach Program, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Charles H. Miller

HAMPTON - Charles H. Miller, 78, of 30 Towle Farm Road, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born April 5, 1922, in Arlington, Mass., the son of the late Charles H. and Marie (Beck) Miller, and was raised in Lexington, Mass. He had resided in Hampton since 1966 coming from Hampton Falls.

He was a graduate of Lexington High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Miller co-owned Little Harbor Development Co. with his longtime partner, Richard C. Tourtellot, which included several area subdivisions, the Hampton Arms Apartments and Derry Arms Apartments, retiring in 1997. He was previously a chicken farmer in Boxboro, Mass., until 1962, and later was one of the four founding partners of New England Homes in Portsmouth.

He was a member of First Congregational Church, Hampton; St. James Lodge No. 102, F&AM; and the Hampton's American Legion Post No. 35.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Julia C. (McGrady) Miller; one son, Charles H. Miller III of Hampton; five daughters, Sandra Miller of Hudson, Diane Miller of Portsmouth, Cheri Miller of Sneedsville, Tenn., Valerie Kincaid of Somersworth and Susan Miller of Wartburg, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Miller Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in First Congregational Church, Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton.

Henry W. Fletcher

HAMPTON - Henry W. Fletcher, 73, of 7 Ancient Highway, formerly of Holden, Mass., died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Exeter Hospital after a brief period of illness.

Born Nov. 18, 1926, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late George D. and Mabel (LeBretton) Fletcher. He was a graduate of Berlin High School.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

For 35 years, he was employed as a machinist for the former Heald Machine Co. now Cincinnati Millicron of Worcester, Mass. He also worked part time for Spag's Supply in Shrewsbury, Mass. After his retirement, he continued working part time for Service Network Inc., in Auburn, Mass.

He lived in Holden, Mass., for many years before moving to Hampton year-round in 1998; he had spent many summers in town.

While residing in Holden he was a communicant of St. George Church in Worcester, and was active in the youth council and CCD. He was also active in Little League, youth hockey and the Holden Tax Association.

Since moving to Hampton, he had attended Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

He was the husband of Gloria Y. (Kudzol) Fletcher for 45 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Daryl P. Fletcher and his wife, Barbara Perin, of Boulder, Colo.; a daughter, Melissa A. Fletcher of Shrewsbury, Mass. and fiance Gerald C. McDonald; two grandchildren, Andrew J. Fletcher and Jesse P. Fletcher; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Maurice Fletcher of Berlin.

He was predeceased by a sister, Irene Swift.

FLETCHER- Henry W. Fletcher, 73, of 7 Ancient Highway, Hampton, died June 6, 2000. A private Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the convenience of the family. The family requests there be no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Henry Marcel Bakula

YORK - Henry Marcel Bakula, 84, of 55 Indian Trail York, Maine, died June 7, 2000, peacefully at his home.

Born Jan. 16, 1916, in Boston, Mass., he was the son of John and Blanche Sczepp Bakula. He attended local schools and graduated from the Scott Carbee School of Art.

He served his country in the Army during World War II.

A self-employed artist, he operated studios on Boylston and Newbury streets in Boston and taught airbrush technique painting starting in the mid-1940s. The woman who became his wife, Winifred Nissen Bakula, at the time of their courtship owned an art studio in Boston.

In 1961, he and his family moved to the Seacoast area, quickly becoming a fixture in the community. He was often seen riding his bike, art supplies in tow, stopping to capture scenes in the community as he rode. He was known as one of the most photographed fixtures in York, seemingly second only to the Nubble Lighthouse.

He enjoyed membership in the York Art Association and loved classical music, playing it night and day at his home. He was known a number of years ago on the citizens band radio as Rembrandt.

In addition to his wife, Winifred Nissen Bakula of York, survivors include a son, Steven B. Bakula and his wife, Janice, of Eliot; a daughter, Linnea Romeo, and her husband, William, of Waltham, Mass.; a brother, Chester Bakula of Gray, Maine; a sister Sophie Sypek of Chicopee, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Brianna and Jenny Guilford of Eliot.

BAKULA - Henry M. Bakula, of 55 Indian Trail, York, Maine, died June 7, 2000, peacefully at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. June 12, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, 129 Miller Ave., Portsmouth. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine.
