James Nicholas Roumbanis

OCALA, Fla. - James Nicholas Roumbanis, 71, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at the Monroe Regional Medical Center.

He was born in San Francisco.

In September 1999, he moved to Ocala, Fla., from Dover, N.H.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in theArmy.

He was Greek Orthodox and an avid historian.

He was the husband of Barbara Roumbanis of Ocala.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a sister, Antonia Hanges of Yonkers, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart or Diabetes Association.

Jeanette N. Kesler

EXETER - Jeanette N. Kesler, of 2 Rocky Hill, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at the Eventide Nursing Home after a period of failing health.

Born Sept. 16, 1917, in Exeter, she was the daughter of Frank B. and Priscilla (Young) Nay.

She was a graduate of Robinson Female Seminary in 1935; the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Mass., in 1936; Smith College in 1940, where she received her bachelor of arts degree; and Simmons College in 1941, where she received her bachelor of science degree.

During World War II, she was a staff member of U.S. Sen. Styles Bridges in New Hampshire. In the 1950s, she was secretary to the chief engineer at United-Carr Fastener Corp. in Cambridge, Mass.

In the early 1960s, she was secretary to the director of admissions at Phillips Exeter Academy.

She was a member of Exeter Health Resources Inc. Corp., Strawbery Banke, Smith College Club of N.H., Exeter Congregational Church, Exeter Historical Society, and the Currier Gallery of Art.

She was a trustee of Eventide Home Inc., serving as clerk for several years.

She was the wife of the late Robert W. Kesler, who died in 1988.

Survivors include three stepsons, James W. Kesler of Leesburg, Va., Walter W. Kesler of Fort Worth, Texas, and Andrew H. Kesler of West Hollywood, Calif.; seven step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, William R. Kesler of Barrington, Ill.

Booth Hemingway

EXETER - Booth Hemingway, 89, a pioneer in the conservation movement, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Exeter Hospital after a brief period of illness. illness.

Born April 20, 1911, in Auburn, N.Y., he was the son of Roy Willett and Mary Booth Hemingway. He attended elementary school in Auburn, going on to receive a high school degree from Hotchkiss and a bachelor of arts degree from Yale University, Class of 1934, for which he served as class secretary for many years.

Upon graduation from college, he went to work for the family food canning company, H.C. Hemingway, in Lyons, N.Y. He also served as a first lieutenant stationed in Australia during World War II.

He married Mary Charlotte Moon of New York City in 1942.

After World War II, he went to work for the Continental Can Co., which transferred him to Havana, Cuba, for several years, after which he returned to live in Stamford, Conn., which became his home for the next 23 years. During these years, he went to work for the American Can Co. in its international department, while also actively involving himself in political and civic organizations. He served in the Stamford town government as a representative for the 19th district for many years, as well as being chairman of the finance committee. As a 22-year volunteer for the Long Ridge Fire Department, his duties as secretary and chief fund-raiser were legendary. He was also a founding member, as well as an active board member, of the Bartlett Arboretum, the Mianus River Gorge Trust, which was the first chapter established in the Nature Conservancy and the Stamford Conservation Trust.

He moved to Kittery Point in 1975, where he continued his conservation interests by serving on the boards of the Warner House Association, Kittery Conservation Commission and the Kittery Land Trust, while managing to travel the world, keeping in touch with family, friends and classmates.

His wife, Mary, died in 1994.

Survivors include his three children, Ann Tarlton of Deer Isle, Maine, John Hemingway of Morgan Hills, Calif., and Booth R. Hemingway of Kittery; as well as his seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Bernice Daigle

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Bernice G. Daigle, 75, formerly of Leslie Drive, Portsmouth, were held Friday, June 2, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by Rev. Msgr. Lawrence Burns. Acolyte was David Palumbo. The readings were by Robert Daigle and Timothy Hubbard. The prayers of Intercession were given by Christopher Daigle. The Eucharistic gifts were presented by Ann and Tom Hubbard. The eulogy was delivered by Tom Hubbard. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery with Msgr. Burns conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Donald Gindlesperger, Timothy Hubbard, Jeffrey Hubbard, Emily Hubbard, Christopher Daigle and Amee Burton.

Charles V. Knightly

HAMPTON - Charles V. Knightly, 89, formerly of the Dearborn House, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born March 14, 1911, in Huntington, Mass., he was the son of the late Thomas and Josephine (St. Thomas) Knightly.

He was a graduate of Commerce High School in Springfield, Mass.

For 24 years, he worked as the business manager for the Berkline Corp. in Springfield, retiring in 1976.

He resided here since 1990, coming from Springfield where he was a communicant of Holy Name Parish, member of its Holy Name Society and was an active volunteer for the Catholic Charities Appeal in that parish.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and a member of its Holy Name Society.

He was the husband of Alice B. (Conley) Knightly for 58 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Thomas W. Knightly and his wife, Linda, of Madison, Conn.; one daughter, Mary A. Knightly of Hampton; two grandchildren, Patrick and Kara Knightly; one brother, Bernard Knightly of South Hadley, Mass.; one sister, Mary Berry of Springfield, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Alexis J. Perron Sr.

PORTSMOUTH - Alexis J. Perron Sr., 83, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at The Edgewood Centre.

Born in Lawrence, Mass., he was educated in Lawrence schools and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

For 44 years, he was employed by the Watts Regulator Co., retiring in 1976.

He held a private pilot's license and ran the Boston Marathon several times as well as other races.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Alexis J. Perron III of North Hampton and Henry R. Perron and his wife, Mary (Boyland) Perron of Portsmouth; two daughters and one son-in-law, Ellyn M. and Douglas B. Eastman of Exeter and Nancy A. Penn of Plymouth, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Eastman, Jacquelyne Perron, Alexis IV, Nicholas, Sarah, and Sydney Perron, and Zachary Penn; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles H. Miller

HAMPTON - Charles H. Miller, 78, of 30 Towle Farm Road, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born April 5, 1922, in Arlington, Mass., he was the son of the late Charles H. and Marie (Beck) Miller.

He was raised in Lexington, Mass., and was a graduate of Lexington High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He worked as a chicken farmer in Boxboro, Mass., until 1962 and later became one of the four founding partners of New England Homes in Portsmouth. He later co-owned Little Harbor Development Co. with his longtime partner Richard C. Tourtellot. The company included several area subdivisions - the Hampton Arms Apartments and Derry Arms Apartments. He retired in 1997.

He resided in Hampton since 1966, coming from Hampton Falls. He was a member of the First Congregational Church; St. James Lodge No. 102, F. & A.M.; and Hampton's American Legion Post No. 35.

He was the husband of Julia C. (McGrady) Miller for 31 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Charles H. Miller III of Hampton; five daughters, Sandra Miller of Hudson, Diane Miller of Portsmouth, Cheri Miller of Sneedsville, Tenn., Valerie Kincaid of Somersworth and Susan Miller of Wartburg, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ruth E. Sloan Chase

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Ruth Evelyn Sloan Chase, 91, of Portsmouth, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, with graveside services held at Riverside Cemetery in New Castle. The Rev. Ronald Staley, pastor, of the New Castle Congregational Church, officiated.

In attendance were representatives from Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star, Portsmouth College Women's Club, the P.E.O., the Southern NH Retired Teachers Association, and P.T.O. (Professional Teachers Association).

Roy L. White

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Roy L. White, 78, of 83 Rockingham Ave., were held Monday, June 5, 2000, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel. Dr. Arthur L. Hilson, pastor, of the New Hope Baptist Church, officiated. Prayers of consolation and obituary reading was done by the Rev. Elease Gray.

In attendance were members of the New Hope Baptist Church; members of the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion; and members of the Piscataqua Chapter No. 4, DAV.

Burial was in Sagamore Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Dr. Hilson. The American flag that draped the casket was presented by Joseph Shaw, commander of the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, A.L., to Mr. White's son, Sherman White.

Bearers were Sean L. Felder, Joseph P. Hill Jr., Barry A. White Jr., Stanley Nock Jr., James Ellis III, and Jeremy S. White, all grandchildren of Mr. White.

Philip H. White Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - Committal services for Dr. Philip Haven White Jr., 67, of Strafford, were held Saturday from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel with full military honors at the Sagamore Cemetery in Portsmouth. Chaplain Randy Chapman of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, officiated.

An honor guard was formed by a detachment from the 10th Mountain Division (LI) Fort Drum, N.Y., under the direction of CW2 Michael Levin, and including Sgt. Myaish Monroe, SPC Michael Lawson, SPC Joreida Torres, SPC Robert Barrera, Pfc. Joseph Quinlan, Pfc. Leonardo Perez and PV2 Frank Schmitz.

The firing squad was under the direction of Sgt. Monroe, including SPC Lawson, SPC Torres, SPC Barrera, Pfc. Quinlan, Pfc. Perez and PV2 Schmitz.

Taps was sounded by Ted Blood III.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded under the direction of Sgt. Monroe, including SPC Torres, SPC Barrera, Pfc. Quinlan, Pfc. Perez and PV2 Schmitz. The flag was then presented to Dr. White's widow, Pat (Parker) White, by CW2 Michael Levin.

Bearers were Sgt. Monroe, SPC Lawson, SPC Barrera, Pfc. Quinlan, Pfc. Perez and PV2 Schmitz.

Doris L. Hodgdon

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Doris L. Hodgdon, 71, of 244 Wibird St., were held Tuesday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. The Rev. William Gardei officiated. Assisting in services was Father Mike Griffin, pastor, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton.

Burial was in First Parish Cemetery, York, Maine, with committal services by the Rev. Gardei.

Bearers were Nick Abraham, Dan Desmond, David Chasse, Eric Chasse, Kevin Lessard and Frank Grassi.

Honorary bearers were Kevon Hughes and Mary Lou Gove.

Trent J. Hayward

SAN FRANCISCO - Trent J. Hayward, 34, of San Francisco, Calif., and formerly of Nashua, died on Friday, June 2, 2000, after a brief illness.

Born May 11, 1966, in Nashua, he was the son of Terry C. Hayward of Michigan and Constance G. Connell of Maine.

He attended Nashua schools and then received an associate's degree in sound engineering from the Los Angeles Recording Workshop.

He was an advocate for the homeless and was a regular contributor to the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

He enjoyed music and art.

In addition to his mother and father, survivors include his father's wife, Patricia Neary-Hayward of Greenville, Mich.; a daughter, Jessica Hayward of Nashua; a sister, Carrie Hayward, and her fiancee, Sean Monahan of Manchester; his paternal grandparents, Hazen and Alyce Hayward of Portsmouth; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Maybelle R. Lytle

YORK - Maybelle Rita (Drew) Lytle, 83, of 10 Birch Hill Road, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at her home after a lengthy period of illness.

Born in Vermont, she was the daughter of Frank and Adeline (Roberts) Drew. She attended Cider Hill School in York.

She was a hard-working bookkeeper for Fred E. Lytle & Sons Construction and Paving Co., and helped her son with Brad’s Wrecker Service for 20 years as a dispatcher.

She attended the Beech Ridge Assembly of God Church of York. She was the loving mother of 10 children, and enjoyed camping, knitting and flower gardening.

She was the wife of the late Fred E. Lytle Sr., who died in 1982.

Survivors include seven sons, Fred E. Jr. of York, Charlie H. of Cape Neddick, Phillip N. of Eliot, Carl E. of New Durham, N.H., Robert G. of Germany, Wayne E. of Sanford, and Bradley D. of York; two daughters, Beverly A. Mack of Sanford and Donna E. Cole of Sanford; many daughters-in-law; one son-in-law, David Cole; sister-in-law Ethel Drew of Denmark, Maine; 29 grandchildren, 21

great-grandchildren; and a special person in her life, Francisca M. Wiersma and her children.

She was predeceased by a son, Roger W. Lytle, who died in 1997; three brothers, Melvin Drew, Gordon Drew and George Drew; a sister, Elizabeth Doty; and a son-in-law, Wesley B. Mack.

John Darvid

NORTH HAMPTON - John Darvid, 81, of 203 Lafayette Road, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 9, 1918, in Berlin, N.H., he was the son of Stanley and Agnes (Mazur) Darvid.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Battery B of the 172nd Field Artillery.

He had been a resident of the Seacoast since 1947 and was employed as a mechanic for many years at the former Motor Mart before retiring.

He was a member of the AARP and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include three sisters, Sophie Tompkinson of Portsmouth, Julia Huntoon of Limestone, N.Y., and Anna Darvid of Easton, N.H.; two brothers, Joseph Darvid of Easton, and Tonie Darvid of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Darvid.

Daniel V. Regan Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - Daniel V. Regan Jr., 52, of 6 Dearborn St., died Saturday, June 3, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born June 14, 1947, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Daniel V. and Beatrice (Holt) Regan. A resident of Portsmouth for most of his life, he began his early years at St. Patrick School. After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1965, he joined the U.S. Army, serving his country in Vietnam.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 168 in Portsmouth since 1970.

In addition to his mother and father, survivors include two sisters, Natalie Ceder and Georgette Clark, both of Portsmouth; five brothers, Michael Regan of Greenland, Kevin Regan, Joseph Regan and Christopher Regan, all of Portsmouth, and Brian Regan of Kittery; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Terrance Regan.

Virginia M. Tibbetts

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Virginia Mae (Trueman) Tibbetts, 63, wife of Richard James Tibbetts, of 176 Holly Lane, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at her home.

Born July 29, 1936, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Cecelia (Kennedy) Trueman of Portsmouth, and the late Thomas Augustus Trueman.

She was a graduate of St. Patrick’s School and Portsmouth High School, Class of 1953, where she was a drum majorette.

Mrs. Tibbetts was a volunteer for the American Red Cross at the former Pease Air Force Base and while her husband was in the military, she worked for Family Services. In 1964, she was voted for the town of Rye as Outstanding Women of America and for three years she raised eight foster children.

In addition to her husband and mother, survivors include two daughters, Nora Jean Popp of Sandwich, Mass., and Carol Ann Medolo of Portsmouth; two sons, Paul David Tibbetts of South Berwick, Maine, and Richard James Tibbetts Jr. of Kailua, Hawaii; three granddaughters, Catherine Nicole Popp and Corrine Rae Popp, both of Sandwich, and Katherine Elise Tibbetts of Kailua; one brother, Thomas Augustus Trueman of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Richard Trueman.
