Marilyn J. Jarvis

YORK - Marilyn J. Jarvis, 74, of 96 Scituate Road, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Oct. 5, 1925, in Springfield, Mass., she was the daughter of William and Aldea (Reidau) Johnson. She was a graduate of the High School of Commerce in Springfield.

She had worked in the accounting department and management at New England Telephone in Springfield for 29 years, retiring in 1981.

She lived in Springfield for 56 years, moving to York in 1981.

She worked at Harbour House clothing store in York for five years. She was an oil-painting artist and was a member of the York Art Association, and enjoyed making crafts. She was also a member of the Pioneers of America.

She was the wife of Leo N. Jarvis of York.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Gary R. Jarvis of Springfield, Mass., and Timothy C. Jarvis of Fall River, Mass.; one daughter, Lt. Cmdr. Sallyanne Jarvis, USN, Oceanside, Calif.; one sister, Joan Wyman of Largo, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Mary E. Bridle

HAMPTON - Mary E. Bridle, 79, of 597 Ocean Blvd. and of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Exeter Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident earlier that day.

Born April 22, 1921, in Dunbar, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Paul and Marie (Andersen) Peterson. She had resided in Hampton for many years before retiring to Florida.

She worked many years as a clerk for the former Tobey Drug Store in Hampton.

She was a member of the Tidemill Chapter No. 67 Order of the Eastern Star in Hampton, and a member of the Ladies of the Elks in St. Petersburg.

She was the wife of Robert W. Bridle Sr., and the widow of the late Robert Ring, who died in 1981.

In addition to her husband of the past 15 years, survivors include a son, Thomas Sewell of Central City, Neb.; a sister, Esther Reuter of Eagle, Neb.; two stepsons; a stepdaughter; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry L. Knight Jr.

DOVER - Harry Lincoln Knight Jr., 80, formerly of Bath, Maine, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at the Dover Rehabilitation Center.

Born July 21, 1919, in Bath, he was the son of Harry Lincoln and Lois (Perry) Knight Sr. He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School in 1938.

He was employed by Bath Iron Works and attended the Wentworth Institute in Boston.

He entered the Navy during World War II, and was later employed in the tin shop at Bath Iron Works. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in shop 17, retiring at the age of 74.

He was a member of the Solar Lodge of Masons in Bath.

He enjoyed collecting political memorabilia and sports items.

He was the husband of the late Clara (Hill) Daigle, his first wife; and the husband of the late Pauline (Murray) Knight, his second wife, who died in 1975.

Survivors include three sons, Douglas E. Knight of Bath, Wayne G. Knight of Rollinsford, and Thomas L. Day of Kittery; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Harry Lincoln Knight III in May 1999.

Doris L. Hodgdon

PORTSMOUTH - Doris L. Hodgdon, 71, of 244 Wibird St., died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at home among family after a lengthy period of illness.

Born Dec. 5, 1928, in Newington, she was the daughter of the late Warren and Hazel (Quackenbush) Leavitt of North Hampton and is survived by five sisters.

She was the beloved wife of George S. Hodgdon for more than 38 years, a dedicated mother to her five children, and a devoted friend to her neighbors, especially Mary Lou Gove of Wibird Street.

She was an avid fisherman and loved yard sales, antiques and jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed the outdoors and her gardens, flowers, and birds, throughout her life. Her family has many fond memories of her trips to "camp" and fishing stories.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her children, Ellen Abraham and husband, Nick, of Barrow, Ark., Rita Desmond and husband, Dan, of Panama City, Fla., John Chasse and wife, Susan, of Portsmouth, Cheryl Allen of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jeffrey Hodgdon of North Hampton; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas J. Reidy III

NEWINGTON - Thomas J. Reidy III, 52, of 262 Fox Point Road, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at his home after a sudden illness.

Born Feb. 29, 1948, in Wareham, Mass., he was the son of Thomas J. and Barbara E. (Condon) Reidy Jr. of Wareham. He had resided several years in Rye and Hampton before moving to Newington in November.

Raised in Wareham, he was a graduate of Bishop Stang High School in North Dartmouth, Mass. A Vietnam veteran, he served as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Air Force.

He worked many years as a medical equipment technician and was currently a senior field service engineer for the Diagnostic Equipment Service Corp. of Norfolk, Mass.

He was the husband of Pam (Hathaway) Reidy.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Osswald of Wareham; Kendall Mancebo and Whitney Avila, both of Tulare, Calif.; two stepsons, Daniel J. Donahue and Gregg Paul Donahue, both of Wareham; two grandsons; a brother, Paul F. Reidy of Wareham; two sisters, Donna Reardon of Concord and Janice Jeffery of Portland, Maine; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Virginia Tibbetts

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Virginia Mae (Trueman) Tibbetts, 63, wife of Richard James Tibbetts, of 176 Holly Lane, died Tuesday, June 2, 2000, at her home.

Born July 29, 1936, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Cecelia (Kennedy) Trueman of Portsmouth, and the late Thomas Augustus Trueman.

She was a graduate of St. Patrick's School and Portsmouth High School, Class of 1953, where she was a drum majorette.

Mrs. Tibbetts was a volunteer for the American Red Cross at the former Pease Air Force Base and while her husband was in the military, she worked for Family Services. In 1964, she was voted for the town of Rye as Outstanding Women of America and for three years she raised eight foster children.

In addition to her husband and mother, survivors include two daughters, Nora Jean Popp of Sandwich, Mass., and Carol Ann Medolo of Portsmouth; two sons, Paul David Tibbetts of South Berwick, Maine, and Richard James Tibbetts Jr. of Kailua, Hawaii; three granddaughters, Catherine Nicole Popp and Corrine Rae Popp, both of Sandwich, and Katherine Elise Tibbetts of Kailua; one brother, Thomas Augustus Trueman of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Richard Trueman.

M. Jane Willey

YORK BEACH - M. Jane Willey, 66, of 23 Beach St., died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at her residence after a lengthy period of illness.

Born Feb. 19, 1934, in Sanford, Maine, she was the daughter of Louis and Emma (St. Pierre) Normandeau. She was a 1952 graduate of Sanford High School.

She had formerly resided in Manchester and North Berwick, moving to York Beach in 1983. She was a winter resident of Largo, Fla.

From 1956-1965, she resided in West Sand Lake, N.Y. She was an ambulance dispatcher in West Sand Lake from 1956 to 1965, and a teacher's aide at West Sand Lake Elementary School. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Averill Park and West Sand Lake.

She was the secretary to the vice principal at Central High School in Manchester for many years, retiring in 1978. She was employed at Wells school in the Special Education Department and served as administrator assistant of the York County Special Education Program from 1978 to 1982.

In 1982, she became owner, editor and publisher of the Gateway to Maine magazine, retiring in 1997. She had also worked at Shelton's Store at Short Sands Beach from 1989 until recently. She was a member of the York Beach Merchants, the Yorks Chamber of Commerce and the York Historical Society.

She was the wife of the late Robert E. Willey, who died in 1982

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah A. Proulx of Portsmouth, Rebecca J. Clow of Bath, Maine, and Lori E. Lombard of Seneca Falls, N.Y.; one brother, Raymond Normandeau of Shapleigh, Maine; six grandchildren, Amelia and Robert Proulx, Meaghan and Stodden Clow, and Nicolena and Brent Lombard.

She was predeceased by her sister, Beatrice Tetreau, who died in 1989.

Roy L. White

PORTSMOUTH - Roy L. White, 78, the widower of Pauline (Leek) White, of 83 Rockingham Ave., died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at his home.

Born Nov. 2, 1921, in Jasper, Texas, he was the son of the late Carroll and Essie (Hadnot) White.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

From 1951 to 1988, he was employed as a truck driver in Shop 02 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring after 37 years.

He was a member of the Ame Zion Church in Boston, Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion of Portsmouth, and the Piscataqua Chapter No. 4, Disabled American Veterans of Newington.

He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and was an excellent cook.

Survivors include two sons, Sherman E. White of Pebble Beach, Calif., and Barry A. White of Newington; six daughters, Barbara A. Hill of Claymont, Del., Donna L. Felder of Kittery, Eunice G. "Bunny" Nock of Bear, Del., Patricia M. Napper of Portsmouth, Bonnie L. Ellis of Waldorf, Md., and Sharon L. White of Little Rock, Ark.; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Eunice Lane of Jasper, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Carroll Roy "Skippy" White, and a daughter, Shirley Gail White.

Gary M. Bogert

NEW LONDON, Pa. - Cmdr. Gary M. Bogert, 55, formerly of McKinley Road, Portsmouth, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at his home. He was the husband of the former Cynthia J. Drake of Rye.

Born in Santa Monica, Calif., he was a graduate of Stanford University with a bachelor of science degree in engineering in the ROTC program.

He was stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the early 1970s, where he was the communications officer on the Tinosa SSN 606.

He was a local politician in his hometown. He served as a township supervisor, a township selectman, and a planning commissioner. He was also a member of the Oxford Masonic Lodge No. 353 in Oxford, Pa.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Juillet, and a son, Ian, of New London, Pa. A private memorial service will be held on June 3 in Rye.

Gertrude M. Benoit

KITTERY - Gertrude M. (Simoneau) Benoit, 85, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the Sunbridge Care and Rehab Center of Portsmouth. She formerly lived in Southbridge, Mass.

Born in Springfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Elzear and Leda (LaBreche) Simoneau. She lived most of her life in Southbridge.

She was a graduate of the Salter Secretarial School in Worcester.

She worked at the McKinstry Ice Co. (later McKinstry Oil) in Southbridge. She then worked for the U.S. Civil Service Commission for 16 years. She retired in 1974.

She moved to Kittery in 1991.

She was a former member of Notre Dame Church in Southbridge, where she was a soloist and choir member for 50 years. She was also a member of the parish council, and a founding member of the Chez Ginette musical production. She was a member of the Interfaith Choir and a Girl Scout leader in Southbridge.

She was a member of Saint Raphael's Church in Kittery. After moving to Kittery, she became a member of the choir at the church of the Immaculate in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of the late Adrien Benoit, who died in 1963.

Survivors include a daughter, Madeleine Godnig and her husband, Edward, of Kittery; two grandsons, Cedric and Oliver Godnig of Kittery; two sisters, Sister Marie Simoneau of Petersham, Mass., and Sister Cecile Simoneau of Montreal, Canada.

Horace W. Hanlon

ROCHESTER - Horace W. Hanlon, 80, of the Studley Home, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born Feb. 4, 1920, in Portsmouth, he was the son of John and Henrietta (Woodman) Hanlon. He resided in Portsmouth for most of his life. In 1983, he moved to Dover. He moved to Farmington in August of 1997. For the past year, he lived at the Studley Home.

For 40 years, he was a heavy equipment operator. He worked at the Shipfitter Shop at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and then for the city of Portsmouth Water Department.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 444 in Portsmouth.

He was the husband of the late Delores (Procario) Hanlon, who died in 1995.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Muriel) Dyer of Newmarket, Mrs. Donald (Betty) Grant of Rochester, and Barbara Basham of Lantana, Fla.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two brothers, Francis Hanlon of Portsmouth, and Harry Hanlon of Rye; one sister, Irene Hanlon of Portsmouth; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, John Hanlon.

Ruth Chase

PORTSMOUTH - Ruth Evelyn Sloan Chase, 91, Portsmouth educator, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000.

Born Jan. 9, 1909, in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Rev. Alexander Sloan, former pastor of the New Castle Congregational Church, and Marie Sloan. They resided for many years in New Castle.

She graduated from Berwick Academy in 1926 and was an outstanding student in mathematics and French.

She was a graduate of Gorham State Teachers College in Gorham, Maine; Wellesley College and Boston University, post graduate. She taught math and science at Portsmouth Junior High School until her retirement in the 1970s.

She was a very active and contributing member of the Southern NH Retired Teachers Association; York County Retired Teachers; past president, Portsmouth College Women's Club; P.T.O. (Professional Teachers Organization); Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of the Eastern Star; Republican Women's Club; NH Needlework Guild, 50-year member of P.E.O.; and Altrusa Club.

She inspired the hearts and minds of all who knew her, enriching their lives with her wit, sparkling stories, and humor. Her "lessons" continued throughout her life and always the "innovator," she lived her life enriching all around her.

She was the wife of the late Charles Stuart Chase for more than 50 years, and before his death, they traveled extensively in the United States and abroad.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Chase of New Castle , and Jackson,N.H., and very loving close friends.

She was predeceased by her loving grandson, Bobby Stevens.

Rita Hassan

ALTON BAY - Rita Ouellette Hassan, 71, of Pumpkin Point on Lake Winnipesaukee, Alton Bay, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Exeter Hospital after a brief period of illness.

Born July 11, 1928, in Dover, she was the daughter of the late Alberic and Rita (Roux) Ouellette, and was raised in Portsmouth. After residing many years in Bethesda, Md., she returned to New Hampshire in 1976 and had resided in North Hampton, Exeter and Portsmouth. She was a summer resident of Alton Bay for 28 years.

A graduate of Sargent College in Boston, affiliated with Boston University, she was formerly employed as a physical therapist.

A homemaker, she was Catholic, attending various Catholic churches, including St. Joan of Arc Church in Alton.

She was a member of Senior Friends in Portsmouth.

She enjoyed sewing, painting, crafts, gardening, bird-watching and boating.

She was the wife of Kamel Hassan, M.D., of Alton Bay and Portsmouth.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Kamel Hassan Ill, M.A., of Portsmouth, and Nicholas Hassan of Kittery; five grandchildren, Nathan and Jennifer Hassan, Christopher Hassan Jr., Nicole Hassan, and Nicole Lepine; a brother, Bric Ouellette of Alton Bay; a sister, Suzanne DeHaven of Atlanta, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Christopher Hassan, in 1989.

Walter Purington

HAMPTON - The funeral for Walter F. Purington, 89, of 294 Towle Farm Road, was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor, of the Methodist Church, Hampton, officiated. Jean Goss was the organist. Words of remembrance were offered by Constance Holman and David Paul. Burial followed in High Street Cemetery, with committal prayers by the Rev. Moore. Pallbearers were Danny Paul, David Paul, Chuck Lamie, Frank Caruso, Brian Caruso, Rodney Bennett and David Pecola.
