Bernice Daigle

RICHFORD, Vt. - Bernice Daigle, 75, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 29, 2000, surrounded by her devoted family after her courageous battle with Alzheimer's and most recently lung cancer. She was a resident of Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.

Born Nov. 21, 1924, in St. David, Maine, she was the daughter of Joseph and Edith Clavette Gendreau of Madawaska, Maine. She graduated from Madawaska High School in 1943.

She was a loving mother and homemaker, as well as a talented seamstress. She enjoyed the company of many relatives and friends, cooking family dinners, playing cards, and always keeping busy and loving her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.

She moved from Maine to live in Portsmouth for more than 40 years, before moving to the Pines in South Burlington, Vt. in 1997, and most recently to Richford just six months ago. She was a woman of great faith and shared her faith with others, even up to her last days. She was a member of St. Catherine's Women's Club, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 140 Auxiliary, Ste. Anne de Beaupre Society and the Golden Agers.

She was the wife of the late Donat A. Daigle, who died in 1980.

She is survived by her son, Robert Daigle and his wife, Susan, of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Thomas Hubbard, of South Burlington, Vt.; six grandchildren, Amee Burton of Charleston, S.C.; Christopher Daigle of Fernandina Beach; Melissa Daigle of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Timothy, Jeffrey and Emily Hubbard, all of South Burlington; one great-grandson, Brenden Burton of Charleston; brothers Hector Gendreau, Ernest Gendreau, Clifford Gendreau and Roger Gendreau; sisters Jeanne Marquis, Olivine Desjardins, Marie Ouellette and Claudette Mavor.

She was predeceased by brothers Willard Gendreau, Auriel Gendreau, Wilfred Gendreau; and sisters Sadie Couture and Edwina Sirois.

She endeared the hearts of all who knew and cared for her. The family wishes to give special thanks to the caregivers at Adult Care; Fanny Allen Campus; Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford, Vt.; Franklin County, Vt., Hospice; and the Chittenden and Franklin County, Vt., Agency on Aging.

Alvina M. Rogers

MILTON - Alvina M. Rogers, 79, formerly of 85 Pineland Park, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Riverside Nursing Home in Dover.

Born in Somerset, Mass., on Feb. 23, 1921, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Anjal) Souza. She lived in the Somerset/Swansea area most of her life, moving to this area about 12 years ago. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Milton.

She was the wife of the late Lawrence Rogers of Milton.

Surviving family members include her children, Joan Gagnon of Gonic, Cynthia Geraci of Portsmouth, Irene Barnette of Ledyard, Conn., Theresa Schenck of Swansea, Mass., Francis Rogers of Milton, and Jacquelyn Corey of Somerset, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Merchant

DOVER - Elizabeth Merchant, 74, formerly of 2 Roberts Road, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at Emerald House, 21 Grand St., Somersworth, after a period of failing health.

Born Jan. 5, 1926 in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of John and Letitia (Burns) Downing.

She was employed as a licensed practical nurse with St. Ann Home, retiring in 1980.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church of Dover and was involved with the religious education program for many years.

She was the widow of Francis R. Merchant, who died in 1983, after 29 years of marriage.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Merchant of Dover, and nieces, nephews and friends of Emerald Home.

She was predeceased by one son, Richard John Merchant; a brother, John (Jack) Downing; and a sister, Thelma Carpenter.

David A. Webber

NORFOLK, Va. - David A. Webber, 79, former president of York House Inc. Interior Designers, a resident of Norfolk since 1947, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000.

He was the son of the late Frederick B. and Christine Holt Webber of Portsmouth. He was a member and past elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk.

He is survived by a brother, Philip F. Webber of Dover; and two sisters, Mrs. Jack W. Walters of West Chester, Pa.; and Mrs. John F. Sullivan of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Cornelius F. Hobbs

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Cornelius F. Hobbs, 73, of Bradenton, Fla., were held April 17, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Edward Kelley.

Lector was Eileen Foley.

Organist was Marion Arnoldy and soloist was Florence Capalare.

Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with Fr. Kelley conducting the committal.

Pallbearers were the deceased's brother Peter Hobbs and his five sons, Dennis Hobbs, Cornelius Hobbs Jr., Timothy Hobbs, Stephen Hobbs and Thomas Hobbs.

The flag that draped the casket was presented to his wife, Edna (Howe) Hobbs.

Conrad J. Lajoie

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Conrad Lajoie, 67, of Edmund Avenue, were held May 26. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church, by the Rev. Monsignor Lawrence Burns, the Rev. Romeo Murphy and the Rev. Agapit Jean.

Acolytes were David Palumbo and Michael Marconi. Readings were given by John Lajoie, Anneleen Loughlin and Paula Keith. Eucharistic minister was Bernard Lajoie. The offertory gifts were presented by John Lajoie, Garner Lajoie and Anneleen Loughlin.

Soloist was Joyce Bastille. The eulogy was delivered by Elaine Levesque and Kenneth Lajoie.

Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery with Monsignor Murphy conducting the committal.

Pallbearers were Glenn Lajoie, Andrew Croteau Jr., Maynard Levesque, Delia Helie, Joshua Pitts and Mike Ripberger.

The flag that draped the casket was presented to the deceased's wife, Simone (Croteau) Lajoie, by his brother John Lajoie.

Loyal Order of Moose No. 444 and the American Legion Post No. 6 conducted the services at the Farrell Funeral Home on Thursday.

Daniel J. Corcoran

PORTSMOUTH - Daniel J. Corcoran, 87, of Middle Road, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation this is cq-from phone book in Portsmouth.

Born May 20, 1913, in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of Cornelius J. and Helen M. (Helliwell) Corcoran. He attended the Clark School in Hanover, N.H., and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1935. He was a proud member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

His lifetime career involved the gathering and reporting of news. With his father, he published the Sunday Star in Lawrence. He was a news reporter and broadcaster for radio station WHEB in Portsmouth. He later wrote for the Haverhill Journal and for the Boston Post. He was a financial reporter for The Boston Globe, retiring from that organization in 1975.

Throughout his career he recognized the importance of reporting facts and keeping personal opinions on the editorial pages.

He was the husband of Helen V. Corcoran for 55 years. not clear if she is alive--waiting for call back

Survivors include his sons Daniel, of Portsmouth, and James, of Barrington; brother Jack, of Winchester, Mass.; and grandchildren Lisa, Hannah and David of Portsmouth, and Brendt of Barrington.

Geraldine E. Holland

PORTSMOUTH - Geraldine E. Holland, 66, of 263 Rockland St., went to be with her Lord on Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 2, 1933, in North Chelmsford, Mass., she was the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Gervais) Lescard. She was a resident of Portsmouth for most of her life.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Lee and her husband, Jay, of Madawaska, Maine; three grandchildren, Heather, Victoria and Jessica Lee; a sister, Virginia Maciejewski of Bay City, Mich.; two nieces and a nephew.

Irene Ford

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Irene E. (Moore) Ford, 92, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 13, 1907, in Newburyport, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Burton and Edith Moore.

She was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. Her greatest achievement in life was her children, whom she loved and cherished, and watching her grandchildren grow. She enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, and was an avid Scrabble player.

She was the wife of the late Guile H. Ford, who died in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Roger and Ronald, both of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by two sons, Robert G. Dawson and Richard M. Ford; and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Mauzerai.

Eleanor Goddard Robbins

KITTERY - Eleanor Goddard Robbins, 88, of Government Street, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth after a brief period of illness.

Born in East Hubbardton, Vt., she was the daughter of Benjamin E. and Ruth E. Harrison Goddard. She graduated from Brandon High School in Vermont and Rhode Island State Hospital.

She was a member of the Second Christian Congregational Church in Kittery since 1931, where she was a deaconess and clerk of the society for 22 years. She was also a member of the church choir, and was a gifted soprano soloist known throughout the Seacoast from the 1930s through the 1950s.

She was a member of the board of directors both for the Tri-County Osteopathic Hospital and the Star Island Corp. at Isles of Shoals.

She was the wife of the late Dr. C. Blanchard Robbins, who died in 1987.

Survivors include one son, John G. Robbins and his wife, Elizabeth, of Kittery; a daughter-in-law, Josephine Robbins, wife of the late Spencer Robbins, of Kittery; five grandchildren, Cynthia, Catherine, Christopher, Peter and Jessica; two stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Harrison B. Robbins and Spencer L. Robbins..

Frederick G. Bolz Sr.

MOODY, Maine - Frederick G. Bolz Sr., 80, resident of Tatnic Road, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at York Hospital after a brief period of illness.

Born Nov. 21, 1919, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, he was the son of A. Frederick and Mary Myrtle (Gregory) Bolz. He graduated from Ringe Tech High School in Cambridge, Mass., and received a degree in engineering from Northeastern University.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was employed for many years as a mechanical engineer for the Simplex Wire and Cable Co.

He was a life member of the Thomas Talbot Masonic Temple in Billerica, Mass., and played a very active role in the Little League program there.

He moved with his wife to Moody from Billerica in 1967.

He enjoyed bowling and played on several leagues in the area; he also enjoyed square dancing.

He was the husband of the late Marjorie P. (Brown) Bolz, who died in 1997.

Survivors include seven sons, Frederick G. Jr., of Goosecreek, S.C., Thomas A., of Coral Springs, Fla., David S., of Ohio, Paul R., of Billerica, Leonard N., of York, J. Andrew, of Lebanon, Maine, and William R., of Kittery; one daughter, Virginia Avery of York Beach; three sisters, Dorothy Brown of Reading, Mass., Elizabeth Cook of Wakefield, Mass., and Jane Ward of Clearwater, Fla.; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Phillip J. Bolz, who died in 1995, and by a granddaughter.

Herbert J. Bryant

KITTERY - Herbert John Bryant, 86, of 30 Graylodge Road, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. Born June 9, 1913, in Potters Place, N.H., he was the son of Herbert and Nellie Clark Bryant. He was raised in Lakeport, N.H., and attended local schools and graduated from Laconia High School.

He was the beloved husband of Helen Elliott Bryant for more than 60 years, moving from the Laconia area in 1940 to make their home together in Kittery.

He was an avid golfer, starting as a caddy, and grew to love the game and enjoy his time spent on the golf course.

He was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, starting in Shop 31 as a mechanic and moving to Shop 38 as an outside mechanic and later as a leadman. He served many years as a GS 13 in combat systems as an engineering technician before retiring in 1972 with more than 30 years of service. He enjoyed many years as a custodian of the Middle Street Baptist Church, where he and his family attended church and he served as a member of the men's club. He is fondly remembered as a man who gave so much of himself to the people of the church, as well as the building he cared for.

An active Mason, he was a member for more than 40 years of Naval Lodge No. 184 AF & AM of Kittery and The Scottish Rite Bodies of Portsmouth, and a noble of the Mystic Shrine in the Kora Temple of Lewiston, Maine.

He enjoyed reading on any subject, as well as restoring the beauty of well-used furniture and returning it for many more years of enjoyment.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, John C. Bryant and his wife, Carla, of Vancouver, Wash., Douglass Bryant and his wife, Judy, of Eliot, and Paul Bryant and his wife, Carol, of Kittery; his grandchildren, Timothy S. Bryant, Tracy Waterman, Jason Bryant, Steve Bryant and Katie Bryant; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Reanna Waterman; and two sisters, Queen Ozog of Phoenix, Ariz., and Nell Bryanton of Lakeport, N.H.
