Walter F. Purington

HAMPTON - Walter F. Purington, 89, of 294 Towle Farm Road, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare Inc.

Born Nov. 28, 1910, in Kingston, he was the son of the late Jacob W. and Annie (Brown) Purington. He had resided in Hampton since 1916, moving there from Kingston.

For many years, he worked as a custodian for SAU 21. He had previously worked as a firefighter in the North Hampton Fire Department and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was also a brick mason for a local contractor and also enjoyed farming.

He was the husband of the late Mrs. Hazel Mae (Chapman) Purington, who died in 1987.

Survivors include four daughters, Frances Paul and her husband, George; Constance Holman and her husband, John; Marion Lamie and her husband, Charles; June Bennett and her husband, Robert, all of Hampton; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Madeline Jeannette Leavitt of North Hampton.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Mark W. Holman; two sisters, Alice Bowley and Fannie Smith; and a brother, James Purington.

Gladys M. LaPerle

EXETER - Gladys M. LaPerle, 80, of Hall Place, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Exeter Hospital after a brief period of illness.

Born June 13, 1919, in Portland, Conn., she was the daughter of the late John and Sophie (Bienewski) Wojcicki. A lifelong resident of Exeter, she attended Robinson Female Seminary.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church and a member of the Catholic Women's Club.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department and a member of the Polish Ladies Society.

She was a volunteer at the Exeter Hospital coffee shop.

She was the wife of the late Richard LaPerle, who died in 1973.

Survivors include a son, Michael and wife Martha LaPerle of Exeter; three daughters, Marguerite LaPerle of Hampton, Marilyn and husband Robert Willett of Brentwood, and Mary and husband David Henderson of Rochester; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Betty LaPerle of Exeter; and one cousin, Flora Kruger of Exeter.

Paulyne Macaulay

ELIOT - Paulyne (Polly) Macaulay, 76, of Boynton Beach, Fla., and formerly of Bridge Street in Kittery, died Thursday, May 25, 2000 at her residence in Eliot.

Born April 25, 1924, in Mount Holly, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Vera (Chaffee) Dean.

She graduated from Windsor High School in Windsor, Vt.

She retired in 1974 from Western Union, where she had many years of service in the Portsmouth office.

After moving to Florida, she worked for Ridgewood Grove and the L&B Grove.

A member of the Community Methodist Church in West Boynton Beach, she served on its finance committee.

She was also a sergeant with the Citizens on Patrol (C.O.P.) and was the secretary to the board of directors of Parry Village, where she resided in Boynton Beach.

She was the wife of the late Fremont Macaulay, who died in 1985.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Marian Palmisano and her husband of Bristol, Conn., and Mrs. Patricia McNeal and her husband of Hartford, Conn.; two nieces; a nephew; three great-nieces; and four great-nephews. She was blessed with many friends in both the New England area and Florida.

Steven L. Gamester

CENTER OSSIPEE, N.H. - Steven L. Gamester, 44, of Bay Point Road, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at his home, after a sudden illness.

He was born in Portsmouth and attended local schools. He later moved to Florida where he was employed as a lighting technician for the Fool Star Band. He had lived in Center Ossipee for the past 10 years.

He had been employed at Highwatch and later at the Irving Oil Co. in plumbing and heating.

He loved the outdoors, including fishing and canoeing. He was also an avid Grateful Dead fan who loved rock music and riding motorcycles.

He was a member of the Audubon Society.

Survivors include his mother and father, Robert and Pauline Gamester, Center Ossipee; two brothers, Thomas R. Gamester of Lebanon, Maine; and Fredrick H. Gamester of Freedom, N.H.; a sister, Galyn G. Beesley of Stratham; and several nieces and nephews.

Floyd 'Gary' Newton

PORTSMOUTH - Floyd "Gary" Newton, 64, of 177 State St., died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Portsmouth Hospital, after a brief period of illness.

Born Dec. 31, 1935, in San Diego, he was the son of Floyd and Adeline (Pykles) Newton. He was the founder and artistic director of The Players' Ring Theatre in Portsmouth. He had a passion for the theater and enjoyed all of its many aspects, including design and play-writing .

He was the husband of Barbara (Lakin) Newton for 22 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Orin "Frost" Newton of Oakland, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. John (Jan) Stephens of Forest Ranch, Calif; his parents, Floyd Newton of Long Beach, Calif., and Adeline (Pykles) Newton of La Mesa, Calif; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. C.C. (Susan) Snyder of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Annette C. Dincecco

SEABROOK - Annette C. Dincecco, 93, of 81 Railroad Ave., died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Dec. 19, 1906, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William and Josephine (LaChance) MacKennon.

She lived in Hampton in her younger years, and in Lynn, Mass., for many years, coming to Seabrook in 1972 from Peabody, Mass.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

She was the wife of the late James D. Dincecco. He died in 1983.

Survivors include one son, James D. Dincecco and his wife, Patricia, of Marblehead, Mass.; one daughter, Joan A. Mattogno, of Topsfield, Mass.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Josephine Galanis of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; Catherine Dobson of Salem, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Hildreth L. Philbrick

MANCHESTER - Hildreth L. (Philbrick) Allard, 84, of 100 Alliance Way, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at her home.

Born Feb. 28, 1916, in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of George H. and Georgina L. (DeVeau) Philbrick. She was a 1934 graduate of West High School and had lived in Manchester all her life.

She had been active in civic affairs. She served many years on the board of The Hampshire House, and was a longtime volunteer at Elliott Hospital.

She was a member of the Manchester Country Club, and the Jolliet Club Associates. She was also a member and past president of the Manchester Women's Club and the Women's Republican Club.

She was a longtime communicant of St. Catherine Church.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

Her husband of 58 years, Robert E. Allard, died in 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet A. Mosher of Manchester, and Judith A. Fredyma of Contoocook; two sons, Robert A. Allard, and Arthur R. "Champ" Allard, both of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Leonard (Shirley) Newell of Manchester; a brother, Stanley Philbrick of Manchester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Joan Russell, Barbara Rousseau and Janet Price; and a brother, Leo Philbrick.

Frank L. Sullivan

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Frank L. Sullivan, 68, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at Country Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport.

Born Dec. 3, 1931, in Schenectaday, N.Y., he was the son of the late Frank and Emma J. (Deutl) Sullivan, and was a graduate of Northwood Prep School in Northwood, N.Y. In 1953, he graduated from Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vt., with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and chemistry and also graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, OCS Program, as a commissioned officer.

In 1958, he received his California general secondary teaching credential for Grades 7-14 from the University of California Extension, Berkeley, and in 1963 received his master's degree in zoology from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his doctorate in science education in 1974 from Boston University.

He started his teaching career as a general science teacher and biology teacher in California. Moving to Massachusetts in 1963, he taught biology at Weston High School for several years, and from 1967 to 1992, he was a professor of biology and science education at Salem State College. During his teaching career, he had been assistant director of NSF workshops at Brandeis University; he was a consultant to Lawrence Hall of Science, Development of Reasoning Workshops; co-chairman of the NSTA-ASE Joint Conference on Science Education between the United States and the United Kingdom London, England, and Boston; chairman of NSTA International Committee; director of the NSF Marine Science Institute at Salem State; and executive director of the Collaborative Project for Math and Science Education at Salem State College.

After his retirement from Salem State, he served two years as science coordinator for the PALMS Project for the Massachusetts Department of Education, and since 1994, has been the co-director of the PALMS Northeast Regional Resource Provider.

During his teaching career, he was inducted into the Massachusetts Hall of Fame for Science Education in 1992; received the Science Teacher of the Year Award for Massachusetts MAST in 1992; was the recipient of the Outstanding Science Educator Award from the Massachusetts Association of Science Supervisors in 1991; received the Science Teacher of the Year Award for Essex County, MAST in 1991; and the Distinguished Service awards for teaching, administration and community service from Salem State College in 1966 and 1979.

He was a life member of the National Association of Science Teachers, NSTA; a member of the National Science Education Leadership Association, NSELA; and the North Shore Science Supervisors Association.

For 13 years, he and his wife ran the Wild Rose of York bed and breakfast in York, Maine, and he and was a volunteer at York Hospital.

He had many hobbies and interests involving travel and nature. Together with his wife, he co-authored travel books on New England and Ireland. He had traveled extensively and loved camping, hiking, fishing, boating, photography and cooking. He was also a supporter of the arts, including theater, music and visual arts.

He was the husband of Frances E. (Blakney) Sullivan.

A former resident of Hamilton for 13 years, he had been a member of the Hamilton Lions Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Ellen J. Taylor of Amesbury, and Julie D. Philbert and husband, Joshua P., of Foxboro, Mass.; one sister, Joey Streeter of Hinsdale; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Leslie J. Kolakowski of Topsfield.

He was predeceased by a son, Matthew F. Sullivan, who died in 1987; and a sister, Jean M. Crighton, who died in 1999.

Dorthy Allen

PORTSMOUTH - The funeral for Dorothy (Paganelli) Allen, 70, of Portsmouth, was held Saturday from the Farrell Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. James Church. The Rev. Agapit Jean, pastor, was celebrant. Acolytes were Bernard Lajoie, who had ministered to Dorothy from St. James for many years. Her childhood friend Theresa Hickey, and Joanne Green and Jane Millet also served as acolytes.

During the Mass, soloist Janet Green, accompanied by organist Jean Goss, performed songs that had special significance for her, including "Panis Angelicus," "Amazing Grace," "The Prayer of St. Francis" and "Ave Maria."

Dorothy's rosary beads and crucifix were placed on the casket by her daughters, Carol Rioux and Clydia Allen Turner, assisted by her son Clyde Allen. The gifts were presented by her three granddaughters, Jacqueline and Michelle Allen Rioux and Elizabeth Allen Turner. The readings were offered by her sister, Mrs. Florence Capalare, and her granddaughters Michelle Allen Rioux and Elizabeth Allen Turner.

Pallbearers were George Rioux, William Turner, and her nephews Michael Capalare, Robert Tuley and Bernard Maher.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth with committal services by the Rev. Jean.

David F. Faulkner

David F. Faulkner, 91, of Zephyr Hills, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Sunbelt Health Care.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at South Eliot Advent Christian Church. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot.

Vernora Eldredge Gille

YORK - Vernora "Verne" Eldredge Gile, 81, of 179 Old Post Road, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at her residence.

Born on June 10, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Dr. Robert H. and Bernice (Newhall) Bogue and was a graduate of Holmquist School for Young Ladies, where she majored in music.

She operated the Verne Eldredge Catering business in the York area for many years. She enjoyed painting and spending time with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Paul O. Eldredge, who died in 1970 and by her second husband, Clarence E. Gile, who died in 1983.

Survivors include two sons, Edward B. "Ted" Eldredge and his wife, Nancy, of Wells, and Thomas P. Eldredge and his wife, Debra, of York; two stepsons, Donald B. Gile of Massachusetts and Raymond S. Gile of California; two brothers, Dr. Robert E. Bogue of Bellaire, Mich., and Stephen V. Bogue of Englewood, Fla.; one sister, Grace Tufts of Wells; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
