Delia Blance Page

BRENTWOOD - Delia Blanche Page, 94, of Route 125, died Monday, May 22, 2000 at St. Ann's Home in Dover, after a period of failing health.

Born Nov. 28, 1905, in Sandown, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Clarisse (Ducharme) Proulx.

She was a longtime resident of Brentwood.

She was employed for many years as a stitcher for Alrose Shoe Co. in Exeter.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Epping and active in the parish activities during her earlier years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Page, who died in 1984, and nine brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Wilder of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Tracey Hussey of Greenland, Sherri Beall of Brentwood, and Jason Wilder of Wells; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Daniel E. Pollard

YORK - The Rev. Daniel E. Pollard, 74, the retired pastor of St. Christopher Church in York, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at the Bishop Peterson Residence in Manchester, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Manchester on Sept. 4, 1925, he was the son of Daniel E. and Katherine (Nolan) Pollard. He attended local parochial schools and graduated from St. Joseph's Boys High School in 1943. He received his early preparation for the priesthood at St. Anselm Abbey in Manchester and at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

He was ordained at St. Joseph Cathedral in Manchester by the Most Rev. Matthew Brady, bishop of Manchester, on May 30, 1953.

From 1953 through 1968, he was a member of the American-Cassinese Congregation, Order of St. Benedict, and was at St. Anselm Abbey in Manchester, having made his profession to the Benedictine Order on July 2, 1947. While at St. Anselm he was assigned various teaching and administrative positions.

In 1968, Father Pollard's desire to do parish ministry led him to ask to be relieved of his commitment to the Order of St. Benedict and to become a member of the diocesan clergy of the Diocese of Portland. After a two-year probationary period, he was incardinated into the Diocese of Portland on Dec. 1, 1970.

While in the Diocese of Portland, he served in the following parishes: From 1968 to 1972, he was an assistant at St. Mary's Parish in Westbrook, Maine. From 1972 to 1974, he was an assistant at Sacred Heart Parish in Portland, and from 1974 to 1978 he was an assistant at St. Patrick Parish in Portland. He was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Good Hope Parish in Camden in 1978 and served there until 1985.

He was named pastor of St. Christopher Parish in York in 1985 and served there until he retired from full-time active ministry on July 1, 1995.

Following his retirement, he lived at the Cathedral residence for a short time before moving back to his beloved York. In retirement, he helped out in many Maine parishes. He is best remembered for his great sense of humor and his kindness to all. In his spare time, he was an avid golfer.

He was a former chaplain of the Manchester Fire Department.

Members of his family include a sister, Mrs. William (Mary) Dion of Manchester and North Ft. Myers, Fla.; one niece, Maureen (Dion) Duval of Manchester; grandnephew, Daniel Duval, and grandniece, Katherine Duval, both of Manchester; and several cousins.

John J. Sullivan

DOVER - John Joseph "Joe" Sullivan, 85, of Brookmore Road, died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born in Boston, Nov. 13, 1914, he was the son of John and Mary (Shea) Sullivan.

He worked for many years as a machinist for the MBTA. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel C. (Dulac) Sullivan; stepchildren, Raymond Bilodeau of Portsmouth, Daniel Bilodeau of Barrington, Ronald Bilodeau of Dover, Michael Bilodeau of Portsmouth, Irene Payette of Fredericksburg, Va., Rollande Phillips of Rye, Suzanne Fantasia of Watertown, Mass., Mary Belmont of Portsmouth, Dianne Bilodeau of Portsmouth and Patricia VanRosen of Rye Beach; and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Neil Sullivan, and a sister, Mary Agnes Sullivan.

Keith C. McCandless

ELIOT - Cmdr. Keith Copeland McCandless, 79, of 137 Goodwin Road, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born July 6, 1920 in DuBois, Pa., he was the son of Harry and Marian Jones McCandless and attended local schools. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1942. He enlisted in the Coast Guard, serving his country until 1964, when he retired as a commander last stationed in New Jersey.

He was married to Virginia Millan McCandless in 1964. They made their home in Westfield, N.J., where he was a commercial office space designer in Manhattan, serving many businesses in the area.

Besides his love of family, he enjoyed his travels to Boothbay Harbor, where he thoroughly enjoyed working on his home on the Isle of Springs. He was currently employed by Miracle Ear of Kittery.

He is survived by two sons, Keith C. McCandless Jr. and his wife, Janet, of San Francisco; Glenn McCandless and his wife, Cindy, of Alpharetta, Ga.; a daughter, Sarah Fitzpatrick and her husband, Dan, of Westfield, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Morgan and Luke McCandless and Daniel and Erin Fitzpatrick.

Richard J. "Rich" Sirrell

PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended funeral services for Richard J. "Rich" Sirrell, 32, of 56 Oxford Ave., were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, on Friday. The Rev. William Gardei, officiated. The eulogy was given by Rich's close friend, Shawn Shambo, and words of remembrance were given by Portsmouth City Attorney Bob Sullivan.

Organist was Mary Chamberlain. Officers posted at the casket on Thursday evening and Friday included representatives from the York Police Department, including Detective James Drumstas, Sgt. Thomas Baran, Ptl. Evan Bradley, Ptl. Michael McCarthy, Ptl. Brian Curtin, Ptl. Owen Davis and Ptl. Luke Ernenwein, and representatives from the Portsmouth Police Department including Ptl. Ofc. Tanya Gravelle and Detective Kevin Semprini. Members of the York Police Exlorer Post No. 393 were posted at the entrance of the funeral home during the visiting hours and the funeral service.

An honor guard was formed outside the funeral home by police officers from the following police departments: York, Portsmouth, Sanford, Berwick, South Berwick, Maine State Police, Keene, Wells, Ogunquit, York County Sheriffs Department, Litchfield, Eliot, York Harbor Masters, New Hampshire State Police, Durham, Dover, Bath, New York City, Kittery, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and representatives from the York Explorers, Portsmouth Explorers and the York Fire Department.

Also in attendance were representatives from City Hall and the Portsmouth Housing Authority.

Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, with committal services by the Rev. Gardei. Bagpiper was Pat Boyle, of the Portsmouth Police Department.

A firing squad was formed by representatives from the Portsmouth Police Department including, Detective Lt. John Yerardi, Detective Steve J. Arnold Sr., Master Ptl. Ofc. Michael MacKenzie, Master Ptl. Ofc. Earl Case, Ptl. Ofc. David Colby, Detective Kevin Semprini, and Master Ptl. Ofc. Rodney McQuate.

Taps was sounded by Ted Blood III, of the Portsmouth Fire Department.

The flag that draped the casket was folded under the direction of Detective James Drumstas, including, close friends John Bost, John Becker, Matt St. Laurent and Randy Bunnell; and Sgt. Thomas Baran, Ptl. Evan Bradley of the York Police Department and Special Agent Brian Nadeau of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The flag was then presented to Rich's mother, Mayor Evelyn (Pierce) Sirrell, by acting Chief Douglas Bracey, of the York Police Department.

The Hat ceremony was conducted by Ptl. Thomas Cryan of the York Police Department, who presented Rich's police officer hat to Mrs. Sirrell.

Following the ceremonies, Ptl. Thomas Cryan advised that Rich's call sign "York 41" has been retired by the York Police Department and Sgt. Martin Doherty and Dispatcher Patrick Moulton performed the calling of Richie 10-7 from his tour of duty and retiring his number.

Pallbearers were close friends John Bost, John Becker, Matt St. Laurent and Randy Bunnell; Detective James Drumstas, Sgt. Thomas Baran, Ptl. Evan Bradley of the York Police Department and Special Agent Brian Nadeau of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Bradley J. Bournival

HAMPTON - The funeral for Bradley J. Bournival, 23, of 13 Cider Mill Lane, Lynnfield, Mass., formerly of North Hampton, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, was celebrant.

Salvatore DiVincenzo was acolyte. His mother, Sheila M. Bournival, his father, Richard D. Bournival and his sister, Laura Bournival, placed the pall over the casket. Judith Kish was organist and Mary Louise Arcidi was soloist. Courtney Beausoleil, Amy Hofeman and Rick Beausoleil offered the readings.

Burial was in Center Cemetery, North Hampton, with the Rite of Committal conducted by the Rev. Father Lavigne.

Full military honors were accorded by a detachment of Marines from the recruiting office of Londonderry.

The flag that covered the casket was folded and presented to his mother, Sheila M. (Furey) Bournival. Donald Matheson offered Scottish laments. Pallbearers were Rick Beausoleil, William Furey, Kathryn Oczkowski, Amy Hofeman, Ashley Hofeman and Courtney Beausoleil.

Conrad D. Lajoie

PORTSMOUTH - Conrad D. Lajoie, 67, of 87 Edmund Ave., died at his home Monday, May 22, 2000.

Born Dec. 28, 1932, in Cyr Plantation, Maine, he was the son of Abel and Annie (Thibodeau) Lajoie.

He was a graduate of Van Buren High School in Maine and served in the Army during the Korean conflict. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1955, he moved to Portsmouth and began his employment at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was an electrician in Shop 51 and retired after 30 years of service. He continued to work as an electrical contractor until recently.

He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Moose Lodge No. 444, American Legion Post No. 6, VFW Post No. 168, Disabled American Veterans, I.B.E.W., N.A.R.F.E., and the Senior Friends at Portsmouth Hospital.

He was the husband of Simone (Croteau) Lajoie for 43 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include five children, Major Donna Anne Lajoie (U.S. Army) of New Orleans; Darleen Helie and her husband, Richard, of Manchester; Daniel Conrad Lajoie of New York City; Janice Pitts and her husband, Farrell, of Greenland; and Wayne Robert Lajoie of Greenland; four grandchildren, Delia Helie, Joshua, Nicholas, and Jeffrey Pitts; three brothers, John Lajoie and Garner Lajoie, both of Van Buren; Bernard Lajoie of Portsmouth; one sister, Anneleen Loughlin of Averill Park, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Lajoie.

Simone E. Roberts

YORK - Simone E. Roberts, 94, of 28 Orchard Lane, York Harbor, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Aug. 11, 1905, in Biddeford, Maine, she was the daughter of Alfred and Florida (Jacques) Hotte and attended local schools there. She was a communicant of St. Christopher Church.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, needlepoint, and she had an extensive collection of stuffed bears.

The widow of Lester Roberts, she is survived by two nieces, Charlotte Bisson of York and Audrey Otis of Chesterfield, Va.

She was predeceased by a sister, Phema Bisson and a brother, Gabriel Hotte.

Mark Charles Welivar

HOUSTON, Texas - Mark Charles Welivar, 37, died Saturday, May 20, 2000. A 1980 graduate of Tomball High School, he worked for H.L. & P. for three years before moving to New Hampshire, where he worked for Exeter and Hampton Electric Co. and met and then married the love of his life, Jeanne Trumbull. They relocated to the Houston area in 1994.

Survivors include his wife of seven years, Jeanne Welivar; his father, Charles W. Welivar; a sister, Melanie Welivar; and many nephews, aunts, uncles and friends.

Vivian B. Chandler

CAPE NEDDICK - Vivian B. Chandler, 63, of Route 1A, died Friday, May 19, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born March 14, 1937, in Medford, Mass., she was the daughter of Isaiah A. and Marion (Pentland) Bullard. She grew up in Winchester, Mass. She received her degree from Jackson College at Tufts University in Medford in 1958. She was an elementary school teacher in Darien, Conn., for two years and for two years at Pease Air Force Base.

She especially enjoyed the family summer home in Pine Point, Scarborough, Maine. This is where she met her husband, Benton. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, rug braiding, caning chair seats, playing bridge, swimming, and water aerobics.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church and a member of the Women's Fellowship group. She served two terms on the York School Board during the building of the high school, and served on the York Budget Committee. She was a member of the Maine Department of Education teacher certification advisory board. She was a president of the Portsmouth_Seacoast YWCA, past president and current treasurer of York Community Service Association, member and former treasurer of Maine AAUW, and a bookkeeper for several nonprofit organizations and local businesses.

She was the wife of Benton T. Chandler of Cape Neddick for nearly 39 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Robert B. (Rob) and his wife, Karen J., of Quechee, Vt.; Richard A. (Rich) and future daughter-in-law Anne E. Bartel of Rochester, N.Y., and Bradford T. (Brad) and his wife, Tina L., of Wells; two grandsons, Nicholas T. Chandler, 2, of Wells, and Connor B. Chandler, 1, of Quechee.

She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia B. Glennon, of Warwick, Mass.

Herbert G. Galle

GREENLAND - Herbert G. Galle, 90, of 19 Newington Road, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born Feb. 12, 1910, in Lawrence, Mass., he was one of four children of Paul and Annie Galle. He attended Lawrence High School, Lynn Technical College, and the University of New Hampshire.

He married the recently deceased Vera Spencer Batchelder on Dec. 20, 1933, the longest night of the year. In November 1936, he began work as a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and within a few months, transferred to the structural design division as a naval architect. He remained at Shop 04 until July 31, 1970. During that time, he supervised the design of sound isolation systems for the Albacore, the Thresher and the Adams class of subMarines as well as overhaul work on subs built at Portsmouth and other ships.

In July 1964, in an interesting episode in his career, he boarded the USS John Adams in motion at sea to investigate strange thumping sounds at deep levels of submersion. As a result, he advanced new theories of submarine design.

For several years, he was investment director of the Family Services Association, and originated the Bowling for Dollars fund-raising event. He was a member of Portsmouth Toastmasters and of St. John's Lodge of the Masons. He was a civil defense warden at Atlantic Heights during World War II and a Scoutmaster there after the war.

For many years, he had been active in St. John's Episcopal Church, and was a supporter of Theater By The Sea during its lifetime on Ceres Street.

He was a beloved friend of many people in the Portsmouth area.

Survivors include his son, Chuck Galle of Greenland; his goddaughter, JoAnne Metz of Berwick; a niece, Shirley Lemire of Manchester, N.H.; a nephew, Warren Galle of Rye; a grandson and five great-granddaughters.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Carl of Kittery, and Paul of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and sister Irma (Gaam) of Manchester.
