Herbert G. Galle

GREENLAND - Herbert G. Galle, 90, of 19 Newington Road, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born Feb. 12, 1910, in Lawrence, Mass., he was one of four children of Paul and Annie Galle. He attended Lawrence High School, Lynn Technical College, and the University of New Hampshire.

He married the recently deceased Vera Spencer Batchelder on Dec. 20, 1933, the longest night of the year. In November 1936, he began work as a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and within a few months, transferred to the structural design division as a naval architect. He remained at Shop 04 until July 31, 1970. During that time, he supervised the design of sound isolation systems for the Albacore, the Thresher and the Adams class of subMarines as well as overhaul work on subs built at Portsmouth and other ships.

In July 1964, in an interesting episode in his career, he boarded the USS John Adams in motion at sea to investigate strange thumping sounds at deep levels of submersion. As a result, he advanced new theories of submarine design.

For several years, he was investment director of the Family Services Association, and originated the Bowling for Dollars fund-raising event. He was a member of Portsmouth Toastmasters and of St. John's Lodge of the Masons. He was a civil defense warden at Atlantic Heights during World War II and a Scoutmaster there after the war.

For many years, he had been active in St. John's Episcopal Church, and was a supporter of Theater By The Sea during its lifetime on Ceres Street.

He was a beloved friend of many people in the Portsmouth area.

Survivors include his son, Chuck Galle of Greenland; his goddaughter, JoAnne Metz of Berwick; a niece, Shirley Lemire of Manchester, N.H.; a nephew, Warren Galle of Rye; a grandson and five great-granddaughters.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Carl of Kittery, and Paul of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and sister Irma (Gaam) of Manchester.

Jeanet Holmen

RYE - Miss Jeanet Holmen, 81, of 795 Washington Road, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the Webster At Rye Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 14, 1918, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Greer) Holmen.

Before her retirement, she was employed as a computer programmer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Survivors include her brother, Alan Roberts of Copper Canyon, Texas; two nephews, John Roberts of Carrollton, Texas, and Mark Roberts of San Francisco; and a niece, Anne Roberts of San Francisco.

Lance J. Thomas-Quintal

BERWICK - Lance J. Thomas-Quintal, 19, of Cemetery Road, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, after an accident in Berwick.

Born May 14, 1981, in Exeter, he was the son of Kenneth Quintal of Berwick and Sherry (Thomas) Quintal of Barrington. He resided in Berwick for a short time.

He was educated in North Hampton, attended Winnacunnet High School and Exeter Vocational Technical School.

He was employed at Don's Mobil Station in North Hampton and also Wayne's Lawn and Garden in Rye. Before this, he worked for Philbrick's Sales and Service in North Hampton.

In addition to his parents, survivors include two sisters, Tabatha C. Quintal and Natasha L. Quintal; his maternal grandparents, Gary and Sandra Varrell of North Hampton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Alston S. Robbins

ELIOT - Alston S. Robbins, 79, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Eliot, died Thursday morning, May 11, 2000, at his home with his family.

Born April 24, 1921, in Searsport, Maine, he was the son of the late Maynard and Beatrice (Stinson) Robbins. He was a longtime resident of Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine.

During Word War II, he served in the Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters spending time in Italy, Africa, and the Hawaiian Islands.

He pursued his love of fishing as a commercial fisherman, owning and operating his own lobster boat and purse seiner. He helped found and served for many years as president of the Stonington Lobster Co-op.

He was an active member of the Lions Club International, receiving the prestigious Melvin Jones Award. He was a member of the Masons and Zephyr Shrine Club; an active member of the American Legion Post in Zephyrhills and Eliot; and an active member of the United Methodist Church in Eliot.

Next to his family, his passions in life were fishing, gardening, and love of people. He will always be fondly remembered for planting enough vegetables and flowers to share with his family and friends, and for his ability to understand those in need and helping them.

He was the beloved husband of Clara J. Robbins for 55 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Chris Robbins and his wife, Glenda, of Danville, Vt.; Glenn Robbins and his wife, Jane, of Eliot; one daughter, Pamela Kryskow and her husband, Michael, of Hudson, N.H.; one brother, Royal Robbins, of Stonington, Maine; three sisters, Rosemund Teter of Tampa, Fla., Sylvia Hintzke and her husband, Ted, of Miami, Fla., and Marlene Hanson and her husband, Stan, of Windham, Maine; and grandchildren Alexandra Robbins, Daniel Robbins, Mercedes Robbins, Adrienne Robbins, Beverly Robbins, Jaime Robbins, Stephen Robbins, Kelly Robbins, Ginger Robbins, Michael S. Kryskow, Arianne Kryskow, Mark Kryskow and Adam Kryskow.

Dorothy Allen

PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy (Paganelli) Allen, 70, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Born Feb. 8, 1930, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Agostina (Maestri) Paganelli. She was a 1948 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

A communicant at St. James Church, she had been a member of The Ave Maria Guild.

Survivors include her children, Clyde Allen of Dover, Carol Rioux and husband, George Rioux, and Clydia Allen Turner of Portsmouth; granddaughters Jacqueline and Michelle Allen Rioux, and Elizabeth Allen Turner all of Portsmouth; her sisters, Mrs. Florence Capalare, Mrs. Mary Perron, and Mrs. Carol Tuley, all of Portsmouth, and Mrs. Geraldine Maher of Greenland; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Mrs. Pauline Ballard and Mrs. Joanne Hogenkamp.

Bradley J. Bournival

LYNNFIELD, Mass. - Bradley J. Bournival, 24, of 13 Cidermill Road, formerly of the Seacoast area, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000.

Born June 19, 1976, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Sheila M. (Furey) Bournival of Lynnfield and Richard D. Bournival of Rye. He attended North Hampton, Rye and Portsmouth schools and Winnacunnet High School.

He was recently discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps, after completing his service.

In addition to his parents, survivors include a sister, Lora E. Bournival of Lynnfield; his stepmother, Alissa (Ohlemeier) Bournival of Rye; his paternal grandparents, Richard and Florence (Buckley) Bournival of Nashua, N.H., and Palm Beach, Fla.; his maternal grandmother, Hazel (McClure) Furey of Lowell, Mass.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Richard, in 1991, and sister, Bridget, in 1983.

TOBEY HARTLEY

Tobey N. Hartley died Feb. 21. Graveside services will take place at 1:30 p.m., Saturday in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery. Arrangements by the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

JOHN STEIN

John R. Stein, who died Jan. 9, 2000, at a Dover hospital, will have a committal service at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 20, at the Anderson Family Cemetery, Route 131, South Thomaston, ME. Arrangements by the Davis Funeral Home, 35 Knox St., Thomaston, ME.

John E. Deery

SEABROOK - John E. Deery, 70, of 80 Alison Drive, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at Portsmouth Hospital.

Born in Bridgeport, Conn., he was the son of Cyril Andrew Deery and Beatrice May (Foster). He attended Danvers, Mass., public and middle schools and graduated in 1948 from Holten High School in Danvers, Mass. and then joined the Army, specializing in microwave electronics.

While in the Army, his accomplishments were many. He was assigned to the 505th Sig Co., 11th Sig Gp. USASTRATCOM. His second assignment was with Co. C, 93d Sig Bn (C&A) (A), Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

During his tenure he served in the Korean War, and had several tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Munich, Germany _ Karlshurel, Germany _ as well as Mannheim, Germany and many stateside assignments. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Good Conduct Medal (3rd award). He retired at the rank of SFC (E-7) with 22 1/2 years of service on Sept. 1, 1969.

He was the husband of the late Doris A. (Lamonde) Deery (Dec. 3, 1988). He leaves his son John B. Deery of Salem and daughter-in-law Denise C. Deery; grandchildren, Marjon D. Teffner of Cornish, N.H., Denise M. Deery of Enfield, N.H.; John B. Deery Jr. of Salem, N.H.; and Christine A. Deery of Derry; great- grandchildren Brendin, Sarah, Jordan, Ryan, and Alexis; a brother Raymond Deery of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.

"Lefty," as he was known to all his golfing friends, was an avid golfer. Semi-pro in his younger years, he was very fond of his favorite golf course located at Pease Air Base, and all his friends (and there were many) who shared with him, his love of golf.

Richard J. Sirrell

PORTSMOUTH - Richard J. "Rich" Sirrell, 32, of 56 Oxford Ave., died Monday, May 15, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a courageous 18-year battle with cancer, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Portsmouth on Jan. 21, 1968, the son of Evelyn (Pierce) Sirrell, mayor of the City of Portsmouth and the late Richard E. Sirrell.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1986. He received his associates degree in business management from the University of New Hampshire in Durham; received his bachelor's degree in management from Franklin Pierce College in Rindge; and received his master's degree in business education from New Hampshire College Graduate School of Business in Manchester.

He also received technical training and professional development in the areas of Quality Schools Initiative, Behavioral Counseling, Reserve Officer Training and Community Policing Instruction. He was certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and as a national coach.

From 1986 to 1995, he was employed for the Portsmouth Recreation Department in Portsmouth as a recreation aide where he supervised and interacted with large groups of children in various activities and events. He acted as a representative for the recreation department, promoted and executed various public programs, managed program enlistment and supervised volunteers in all departments.

In 1997, he was employed as a Behavioral Specialist and Special Education Teacher for the Portsmouth School Department. As a behavioral specialist he provided students in grades 6-8 guidance in how they can make appropriate choices and methods to be successful both personally and academically.

He assisted students in making better choices as to classroom behavior related to their goals of academic performance and achievement. As a Special Education teacher, he generated and implemented lesson plans for the sixth-grade special education resource room and provided academic and behavioral support to the teachers.

From 1991 to 1997, he was also employed as a substitute teacher. His love of his many jobs was being a Resource Police Officer for 11 years, from 1989 to 2000, with the York Police Department in York, where he was very involved with the York Police Community Outreach Programs and his one dear love, as adviser of the York Explorer Post No. 393.

The several activities he was involved in included, the York Police Community Outreach Programs, Portsmouth High School track official, Portsmouth Middle School basketball official, adviser for the York Police Explorer Post No. 393 and was chairman for Youth Activities of the York Elks Lodge.

He was a member of the York Elks Lodge No. 2788, York American Legion and a lifetime member of the National Youth Sports Coaching Association.

Mr. Sirrell enjoyed his many friends, whom he had many of, and his family, who he lovingly embraced with the long bout of cancer and the long road to survive.

His favorite words from a Christmas card written by Jeanne Morris, read as follows: "I did not have an easy road to travel, but every time I reached the point where trouble was so deep that I thought I could go no farther, someone came along to help me through the deepest drifts. I didn't always know who these people were, but I always knew who sent them."

He is survived by his mother, Mayor Evelyn (Pierce) Sirrell, of Portsmouth; two brothers, Christopher and Michael Sirrell of Portsmouth; his many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, very close friends and the eye of his life, nephew Christopher J. "CJ" Sirrell Jr.; and very special friends, Jim and Andrea Drumstas.

Mr. Sirrell was predeceased by his grandparents Marion and Edward Sirrell and Evelyn and Claude Pierce.

Abigail M. Trevino

KITTERY - Abigail M. Trevino, infant daughter of Patrick X. and Christine (McKenney) Trevino, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Maine Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 29, 1999, in Portland, Maine.

In addition to her parents, family members include her maternal grandparents, Amelia P. and Richard G. McKenney of Deer Isle, Maine; paternal grandparents, Roger T. and Debra L. Trevino Sr., of San Antonio, Texas; paternal great-grandparents, Alfred Q. and Sara Valenzuela of San Antonio, Texas; paternal great-grandmother, Gloria Trevino of San Antonio, Texas, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Thelma (Tracy) Stanton

PORTSMOUTH - Thelma (Tracy) Stanton, 90, of 188 Jones Ave., died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at the SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Portsmouth.

Born on Nov. 3, 1909, in Steuben, Maine, she was the daughter of George I. and Agnes (Kidson) Tracy.

She was a graduate of Cherryfield Accademy, Cherryfield, Maine, and a graduate of Farmington State Normal School.

She retired from the Jewell Manufacturing Co. in Manchester, after 24 years and was employed at the former "Women's Aid Home in Manchester, for several years.

Before moving to Manchester, she was employed for the Cherryfield school system.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Cherryfield. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint and reading.

She is survived by two sons, Carl I. Stanton of Portsmouth, and John P. Stanton of York Harbor, Maine; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Rosen of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Joanna Jones of Natick, Mass.; two great-grandchildren, Jack Morris and George Morris, both of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; two sisters, Esther Foster and Mary Ingle, both of South Barre, Mass; and several nieces and nephews.
