Walter F. Plumer

DURHAM - Walter Forest Plumer, 59, of 38 Madbury Road, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at his home.

Born Sept. 28, 1940, in Exeter, he was the son of Stanley L. and Marion (James) Plumer, he resided in the Lee, Nottingham, Newmarket, Dover and Durham area all of his life.

He was a member of the Granite State Independent Living Foundation, and was a former president of the board of directors, as well as having been a peer facilitator and counselor.

Survivors include a sister, Sally Dionne of Hudson, N.H.; a brother-in-law Nelson Dionne, also of Hudson; two nephews, David Dionne of Campton, N.H., and Michael Dionne of Nashua, N.H.; a niece, Lisa Yorke of Lincoln, Vt.; three great-nephews, Jon Dionne, Jesse Yorke and Thomas Dionne; three aunts, Jean Plumer of Lee, Ada Wescott of Dover, and Arlene Clark of Guild Hall, Vt.; his longtime friend and caregiver, Sue Wyant and her children, Heather Wyant, Sara Champagne and Alex Wyant; and several cousins.

Myra L. Johnson Nicholson

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Myra L. (Smith) Johnson Nicholson, 83, of 346 Pleasant St., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Thursday.

The Rev. Linda Downing, associate pastor of Bethel Assembly of God in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mrs. Nicholson's son, Albert C. Johnson.

In attendance were members of Bethel Assembly of God.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Downing.

Bearers were David Fieldsend, Henry Fieldsend, Bob Williamson, Joe Succi, Alan Fowle and Joshua Fowle.

Dean W. Dixon

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Dean W. Dixon, 49, the husband of Ann (Stover) Dixon, of 33 Suzanne Drive, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H.

Born Jan. 13, 1951, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Marjorie F. (White) Dixon of New Castle and the late Alden F. Dixon. He graduated from Dover High School in 1969.

He was employed for the Boston & Maine Railroad.

He was a member of the Bethany Church of Greenland, and was an avid fisherman.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Matthew Dixon of Portsmouth; two brothers, Richard Dixon of Dover, N.H., and Dennis Dixon of Dedham, Mass.; a sister, Margeann Good of Charlotte, N.C.; his in-laws, Howard and Patricia Marshburn of Gonic, N.H.; several nieces and nephews; and lots of good friends.

Lois M. and Richard H. Oeser

LAWRENCE, Mass. - There will be an interment service at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2000, at Belleview Cemetery in Lawrence, Mass., for Lois Milliken Oeser and Richard H. Oeser, formerly of Lawrence, Rye, N.H., and Eliot, Maine. The children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousin of Lois and Richard thank their many friends and business acquaintances for their kind expressions of sympathy at the time of their passing.

Robbin A. Merchant

SOUTH BERWICK - Funeral services for Robbin A. (McLaughlin) Merchant, 37, of 79 Academy St., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Tuesday.

The Rev. William Gardei officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Robbin's aunt, Brenda Walton. Mrs. Walton also read a letter written by Robbin's sister, Jennifer Wellwood, and a solo was sung by Erin Hatch.

In attendance was a large delegation of family and friends and representatives from the Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion.

American Legion services were held at the funeral home by the Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6 Auxiliary, including Brenda Walton, past department president, and Betty Sanford, chaplain.

A color guard was formed by Karyl Horn and Patricia Peters. Also assisting in services were representatives from both the American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion Post, including Joe Shaw, commander; Pat Snow, past commander; Vivian Snow, past department president; June Daley, past department president; Ella Studrance, district director; Tony Lozada; Sandra Tessicin; Shirley Williams, department president-elect; Carl Walton, past commander; Gloria Barnes, past sergeant at arms; Vicki Stalnecker; and representing SAL was Bruce McLaughlin.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with services by the Rev. Gardei.

Bearers were Temple Merchant, Wayne Hatch, Steve Jumper, Lucas Morin, Thomas Wellwood and Tyrone Hatch.

Regina L. Croteau

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Regina L. Croteau, 73, of 134 Rochester Hill Road, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at her home after a lengthy period of failing health.

Born June 13, 1926, in St. Leonard, New Brunswick, Canada, she was the daughter of Napoleon and Anna (Soucy) Dube. She lived in Portsmouth for a number of years before moving to Rochester in 1980.

She worked for the Morley Co. for a number of years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of Holy Rosary Church.

She was the wife of the late Philias Croteau, who died in 1994.

Survivors include include two brothers, Romeo Dube of Dover and Joel Dube of Portsmouth; a sister, Yvette (Dube) Croteau of Eliot; a nephew, Kevin J. Croteau and his friend, Sue Goodwin, of Rochester; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert H. Todd

CAPE NEDDICK - Robert H. Todd, 79, of 91 River Road, died Wednesday, May 10, at his residence, after a long illness.

Born Sept. 11, 1920, in York, he was the son of Charles H. Sr. and Lydia (Freeman) Todd. He was a 1937 graduate of York High School and received an associate's degree of business at McIntosh Business College.

He began his career in the Labor Board Office at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in December 1939. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and served as a storekeeper, first-class aboard the USS Kochab in the Pacific Theatre. After his discharge from the Navy in 1945, he returned to the Navy yard as supervisor in the Efficiency and Reduction-in-Force Section of the Industrial Relations Department and later became assistant employment superintendent. He retired in 1977, as head of the Industrial Relations Office's Employment Division, after 38 years of government service.

He received numerous awards and recognition for many suggestions for efficiency and outstanding work at the Navy yard.

He was an avid sports fan and golfer.

He was a director of the York Golf & Tennis Club from 1974 to 1992 and served as president of the York Golf & Tennis Club from 1978 to 1992. He was a member of the Maine Seniors Golf Association, a past president of the York Twilight League, and a former member of the Southern Maine Seniors Golf Association, and the American Seniors Golf Association.

He attended the Cape Neddick Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion. He was well-known as the official timekeeper at the York High School basketball home games for many years.

He had wintered in Spring Hill, Fla. for 20 years.

He was the husband of Elizabeth (Littlefield) Todd of Cape Neddick.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons and their wives, Robert R. and Nancy L. Todd of York and Edward H. and Judith L. Todd of Abington, Mass.; one brother, Charles H. Todd Jr. of Cape Neddick; three granddaughters, Cynthia A. Puffer, Pamela E. Todd and Lindsay N. Todd; and two great-grandsons, Shawn and Christopher Puffer.

He was predeceased by a son, Alden M. Todd, who died in 1957, and a brother Milton F. Todd, who died in 1989.

Norman G. Mello Sr.

SOUTH BERWICK - Norman G. Mello Sr., 62, of 30 Junction Road, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at his home.

Born in Fall River, Mass., June 3, 1937, he was the son of the late Joseph and Virginia (Rezendes) Mello.

He served in the Army.

He was a resident of South Berwick for 25 years and had previously resided in Mansfield, Ohio and Bristol, R.I. He was a floor-covering installer and was self-employed, formerly doing business as Mello and Sons Floor Covering.

In addition, he was employed part-time by South Berwick Police Department and Rollinsford Police Department. He was a member of the Blue Knights, a motorcycle club for police officers.

He was a member of the South Berwick Fire Department and had previously been a member of F&AM St. John's Lodge of South Berwick.

Family members include two sons, Norman G. Mello Jr. of South Berwick, and Kevin M. Mello of Dover; two daughters, Brenda J. Fontaine of North Kingston, R.I. and Jessica L. Henry of Wetherfield, Conn.; and nine grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Mello.

Joseph C. King

HAMPTON - Joseph C. King, 72, formerly of Belmont, Mass., died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 13, 1927, in Belmont, he was the son of Joseph C. and Mary E. (Carney) King. Joe was raised in Belmont, and was a 1945 graduate of Belmont High School and a 1950 graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving with the Army.

With his loving wife, Claire, they raised seven children in Belmont. He was a sports enthusiast, having played semipro baseball in Bend, Ore., and coached Belmont Little League for many years. He also served the town of Belmont as a town meeting member and was a water commissioner from 1972-1983.

He worked in the computer industry for 35 years beginning in 1952 as a programmer. From 1960 to 1986, he was employed by Sperry-Univac as a technical engineer and sales executive. As a sales executive he received the Achievement Award 12 times and was a five-time recipient of the President's Award.

Joe was a longtime summer resident of Rye Beach and made his home here year-round after his retirement in 1986.

He was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. He was a member, former board of director and treasurer of the Abenaqui Country Club, Rye Beach. Joe was also an avid bridge player in the region and at the Abenaqui Country Club.

He was the loving husband of the late Claire (Mullen) King.

Survivors include seven children and their spouses, Stephen King and his wife, Debra, of Winchester, Mass.; Sally Manfredi and her husband, Tony, of Belmont, Robert King of Hampton, Michael King and his wife, Rosemary, David King and his wife, Jackie, of Haverhill, Mass., Susan Pickard and her husband, Robert, of Hampton, and Joseph King and his wife, Johna, of Rye Beach and Yarmouth, Maine. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren.

Elizabeth A. Laws

SILVER LAKE, N.H. - Elizabeth A. Laws, 90, of Silver Lake, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in North Conway.

Born Nov. 11, 1909, in Pelham, N.H., she was the daughter of Harry and Carrie (Stickney) Atwood.

She was the wife of The Rev. Clifford W. Laws.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, David H. Laws of Manassas, Va.; two daughters, Martha Anderson of South Hampton, and Janet Found of Silver Lake; a brother; three sisters; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Bernice B. Lobdell

READING, Mass. - Bernice (Burnham) Lobdell, 88, died suddenly, Sunday, May 7, 2000, at her home.

Born July 24, 1911, and raised in Kittery, she was the daughter of Elmer and Mabel (Guptil) Burnham.

She was a 1932 graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She taught French and Latin in the Reading Public Schools for many years.

Prior to moving to Reading 45 years ago, she lived in Stoneham. She was a former member of Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was past president of the Stoneham Woman's Club, a Girl Scout troop leader, a member of the Stoneham Garden Club, the Stoneham and Reading Historical Societies, the Audubon Society, the Reading College Club, the N.E. Classical Association, the Mass. Foreign Language Association and the Congregational Church of Reading.

She was the wife of the late Winston B. Lobdell.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and M. Marwan Kouki of Reading; a brother, Elmer J. Burnham of Kittery; three grandchildren, Karawan, Yasmeen and Nasreen Kouki, all of Reading; and many nieces and nephews.

Joseph G. Sawtelle Jr.

To share remembrances of Joe's indomitable, positive and happy spirit, Joe's family would welcome the company and the comfort of his friends and associates at a memorial celebration from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, at Portsmouth High School Auditorium, followed by a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoken's.

A church service of Thanksgiving for the life of this remarkable, kind and generous man will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at New Castle Congregational Church, with light lunch to follow. Everyone is welcome, seating limited. Please enter the island on Route 1B by the old Wentworth by the Sea hotel. Logistics for parking and attendance are available at 436-7943.
