Theda G. Gohlke

NORTH HAMPTON - Theda G. Gohlke, 86, 207 Post Road, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1913, in Fayette, Maine, she was the daughter of Fred T. and Lillian (Staples) Kent. She had resided here since 1971, coming from Sudbury, Mass.

She worked for several years as an inspector for the former Hodgeman Rubber Co., of Framingham, Mass.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of the late Richard T. Gohlke, who died in 1985.

Family members include her son, the Rev. Richard T. Gohlke Jr., of North Hampton; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Kent of Phillips, Maine; two sisters, Elizabeth Clark of Milbury, Mass., and Thelma Farwell of Windham, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy W. Cronin

HAMPTON FALLS - Dorothy W. (White) Cronin, 75, of 142 Exeter Road, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Lahey Clinic, Burlington, Mass.

Born Feb. 28, 1925, in Bluefield, West Va., she was the daughter of Emmett Ligon White and Eula Gay (Carter) White. She was educated in the Roanoke, Va. school system and was a graduate of Roanoke High School. She was a graduate of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va.

She had been a resident of Hampton Falls since 1989, previously residing in Lynnfield, Mass., from 1970 to 1989; and previously resided in Manchester for 15 years.

She was a member of the Manchester Country Club.

She was the wife of J. Leo Cronin Jr., of Hampton Falls and previously of Haverhill, Mass.

In addition to her husband, other survivors include her son, Jonathan R. Savage of Walnut Creek, Calif.; her daughter, Barbara Jo Savage of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and one brother, Emmett L. White of Atlanta, Ga.

She was the sister of the late Barbara White.

Lyndon S. Fyles

ORWELL, Vt. - Lyndon Saunders Fyles, 77, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at his home in Orwell.

Born Jan. 14, 1923, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, he came with his family to Vermont in the late 1930s. He received his education in Bordentown, N.J. schools. He entered the Army in 1943 and served in both the European-African Theatre and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Among his many military decorations is the Philippine Liberation Medal, Victory Medal, Pacific Campaign and European-African Campaign ribbons. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Vermont.

He graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in mechanical engineering, Class of 1950. He married Virginia Bernice Porambo, Dec. 11, 1948 in Burlington. Mrs. Fyles died July 14, 1998.

He moved to Orwell with his family in 1951. He worked with his father in Fyles Plywood Mill in Shoreham until the early 1960s. He then joined New York Life Insurance Co. He owned and operated Fyles Family Insurance Agency from 1963 until his retirement in 1988. He served on the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department from 1965 until 1966. He served as first assistant chief from 1975 until 1986 and as chairman from 1967-1968. He was honored as a senior officer on Feb. 10, 1996. He was a member of Mount Independence Masonic Lodge in Orwell. He belonged to the National Life Underwriters Association as well as the Vermont State Life Underwriters Association. He was a life member of the Million Dollar Roundtable. He was a life member of the Addison County Firefighters Association. He was a member of the Vergennes American Legion Post and the Vergennes Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Fyles Rotella of Rutland; four sons, James Lyndon Fyles of Rye, Richard Douglas Fyles of Orwell, Mark Raymond Fyles of St. Albans and Tad Henry Fyles of Orwell; a brother, Cleveland Fyles of Cold Springs, N.Y.; two sisters, Margaret Saunders Stone of Foster City, Calif., and Jenne Forbes of Tallahasse, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Olga Fyles of Shelburne; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son Timothy Fyles and a brother Francis Fyles.

Dorothy W. Cronin

Myra L. Nicholson

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Myra L. (Smith) Johnson Nicholson, 83, widow of Harold Nicholson, of 346 Pleasant St., died Monday, May 8, 2000, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home.

Born April 30, 1917, in Portsmouth,she was the daughter of George and Carolyn (Carr) Smith.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1935, and had been employed as a clerk at the Colonial Laundry in Portsmouth. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in Portsmouth and a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Zephyrhills, Fla.

She is survived by three sons, Albert C. Johnson of Greenland, Burleigh Johnson of Portsmouth, and Brym Johnson of Brooksville, Fla.; one daughter, Helen Fieldsend of Greenland; five grandchildren, Keith Johnson, Linda Fowle, Alison Bauer, Christine Williamson, and David Fieldsend; seven great-grandchildren; and one niece and two nephews.

She was also predeceased by her first husband, Charles Johnson.

Edward E. Philbrick

KITTERY - Edward E. Philbrick, 49, of Martin Road, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at York Hospital, after a long illness.

Born March 4, 1951 in Kittery, he was the son of Lee and Catherine (Renner) Philbrick. He was a lifelong resident of Kittery. He worked in the fishing industry and enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He was a member of the York Fish and Game Club.

He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Walter Philbrick.

His wife Donna, of 22 years, survives him.

Other survivors include his son, Joshua Philbrick of Kittery; a daughter, Kristy Philbrick of Kittery; two brothers, Albert Homer Philbrick of Florida, and Lee Philbrick Jr. of New Jersey; three sisters, Irene Squires of Massachusetts, Virginia Littlefield of Cape Neddick, and Jean Milbert of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.

Rita Doris Francoeur

FRANCOEUR - Rita Doris (Ducharme) Francoeur, 75, of 160 Lions Mouth Road, Amesbury, Mass., died May 3, 2000, in Burlington, Mass. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2000, at St. Joseph Church, School Street, Amesbury, Mass. Interment will be private. The family requests no floral arrangements. In her memory, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688, or to the American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Arrangements are under the direction of the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury, MA 01913.

Samuel Lisagor

BROCKTON, Mass. - Samuel Lisagor, formerly of Portsmouth, died Sunday, May 7, 2000.

He was the beloved husband of the late Beatrice (Perlis) and the late Gertrude (Shacter), and dear friend of Rosemarie Sekler.

He was a devoted father to a son, Jay Lisagor of Malden, Mass., and a daughter, Paula, and her husband, John Selden, of Brockton, Mass.; dear grandfather of Lori Duff, Alan Selden, and Amy and Scott Lisagor; great-grandfather of Kristalyn.

He was predeceased by Rosa and Bessie Lisagor.

James L. Downs

RYE - James L. Downs, 53, of 105 Perkins Road, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at his home.

Born July 23, 1946, in Holden, Mass., he was the son of Frederick and Ivy (Briggs) Downs. Raised in Rye, he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School. He lived in Hampton for many years before returning to Rye.

For the past six years, he worked as an electrician for Electrical Dynamics Inc. of North Reading, Mass. Before that, he worked for New England Homes of Portsmouth, Cianbro Construction Co. in Maine, and had worked for Sentry Systems of Portsmouth for nearly 25 years.

Most recently, he found solace at his second home in Stoneham, Maine.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving two terms of service with the Navy. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Post No. 8942 of Rye, and a former member of both the Portsmouth Rotary and Kiwanis clubs.

He was the husband of Deborah A. (Sass) Downs.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Adam Downs of Hampton, and James Downs of Massachusetts; a stepdaughter, Vicki Willett and her husband, Gregg, of Exeter, and two grandchildren, Jacob and Morgan Willett.

Jeffrey A. Holway

BLUFFTON, S.C. - Jeffrey A. Holway, 58, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at his home.

Born Nov. 1, 1941, in Attleboro, Mass., he was the son of James Awain Holway and Lora Austin. In 1999, he moved to Bluffton, S.C., from New Hampshire.

He was a veteran of the Air Force and was a member of the World Taekwondo Federation.

He was the husband of Bernette Holway.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Jeff Holway Jr. of Hampton, N.H., and Brett and Todd Holway, both of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; a daughter, Heather Holway of Hilton Head Island; and a brother, David Holway of Attleboro, Mass.

Beatrice L. Patterson

PORTSMOUTH - Beatrice Lloyd Patterson, 93, formerly of Durham and Portsmouth, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare after a long period of illness.

Born Jan. 27, 1907, in Providence, R.I., she was the daughter of Herbert and Alice (Butler) Lloyd. She was a 1925 graduate of English High School, Providence.

For 70 years, she resided in Cranston, R.I., and for many years worked as a secretary and EKG technician for the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, retiring in 1972.

She lived in South Freeport, Maine, for seven years, before moving to Durham and Portsmouth.

She was a member of the Edgewood Woman's Club, Cranston; the Elmwood Woman's Club, Providence; the Seekonk Grange No. 341, Seekonk, Mass.; and the Freeport Woman's Club, Freeport, where she was also a former treasurer.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ, South Freeport, the Durham A.R.A., and the Silver Squares of Durham.

She was known as "Gram" to her family and their many friends. Her colorful and engaging personality will be remembered by all who knew her. She loved her grandsons immensely and would go anywhere, anytime, to be with them and to enjoy their adventures in life.

Survivors include a daughter, Holly Patterson Horne and her husband, Peter J., of Rye; two grandsons, Christian Patterson Horne and Eric Lloyd Horne; a sister, Emily Lloyd Davis of Cranston, R.I.; a niece and two nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Molly, and brother, William.
