Lawrence E. Harmon

PORTSMOUTH - Lawrence E. Harmon, 89, of 346 Pleasant St., passed away Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Mark Wentworth Home.

Born April 20, 1911, in East Machias, Maine, he was the son of Walter and Susie (Reynolds) Harmon. He was a graduate of Machias High School and served in the Coast Guard.

For many years, he operated Harmons Well Drilling Co. on the Seacoast and in Massachusetts.

He was also a life member of the Odd Fellows.

He was the husband of the late Forrestine (Remick) Harmon.

Survivors include a son, Alvin Harmon of Eliot; two daughters, Rochelle Gray of Portsmouth, and Sandra Dozier of Rochester; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; one brother; five sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret A. Cuddihy YORK - Margaret Ann "Maggie" Cuddihy, 73, of Yorkshire Commons, 155 York St., died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at York Hospital after a lengthy period of illness.

Born March 8, 1927, in New York City, she was the daughter of Paul R. and Rita (Kernan) Cuddihy. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy, Brentwood, N.Y., and received her bachelor of arts degree from Manhattanville College.

For many years, she lived in London and France, moving to York in 1977.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church in York, where she was active in its spiritual prayer groups. She was dedicated to Alcoholics Anonymous and was a mentor for members entering the program.

Survivors include her sister, Helen Galvin of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews, with whom she had close relationships.

Jane A. Chatfield ELIOT - Jane A. Chatfield, 54, of 14 Hanscom Road, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at York Hospital after a battle with skin cancer.

Born Jan. 13, 1946, in Lancaster, Ohio, she was the daughter of William and Lucille (Misse) Young and attended local schools. In 1979, she moved with her husband, William, to the Seacoast area.

She was a much-loved horticulturist and co-owner with her husband of Sunburst Nurseries of Eliot. She enjoyed her business, her clients and the countless hours she spent with them.

She attended the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of William Chatfield of Eliot.

In addition to her husband and her mother of Sugar Grove, Ohio, survivors include a brother, John Young, and his wife, Lola, also of Sugar Grove.

Frederick E. Evans

YORK - Frederick E. Evans, 82, of 11 Bluestone Lane, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Harbor Home.

Born Sept. 26, 1917, in Scranton, Pa., he was the son of George and Gertrude (Morgan) Evans. He had resided in Natick, Mass., for 36 years, moving to York in 1983.

He was a graduate of Technical High School in Scranton, and received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Polytechnic College in Oakland, Calif.

He had worked as an electrical engineer for Westinghouse in Framingham, Mass., and traveled throughout New England and New York for Westinghouse from 1947 until his retirement in 1984.

During World War II, he served as a lieutenant in the Navy.

He was a member of the Hartford Street Presbyterian Church of Natick. He enjoyed woodworking and working on electrical equipment and walking at Long Sands Beach in York Beach.

He was the husband of Doris A. (Hauser) Evans of York for 57 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Mrs. John (Elaine) Hart of North Billerica, Mass.; Cheryl Evans of Kennebunkport; Mrs. Dwight (Joyce) Dunlap of Uxbridge, Mass.; Mrs. J. Michael (Gwendolyn) McGhee of Allenstown, N.H.; and 11 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, George D. Evans, who died in 1998.

Rita D. Francoeur

AMESBURY, Mass. - Rita Doris (Ducharme) Francoeur, 75, of 160 Lions Mouth Road, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, May 3, 2000, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

Born July 13, 1924, in Nashua, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Roaul and Ernestine (Pelletier) Ducharme. A resident of Amesbury for more than 70 years, she was educated in the Amesbury school system. A retiree of the Bartley Machine Shop in Amesbury, she worked in the cafeterias of both Amesbury High School and Sacred Heart School, and was union steward for the cafeteria workers of the Amesbury school system.

A communicant of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Amesbury, she was a member of St. Ann's Sodality and the Homemakers Club of Amesbury. Enjoying her life to the fullest, she loved reading, gardening, painting, and was an accomplished seamstress.

She was the wife of the late Lucien P. Francoeur.

Survivors include her sons, Robert Francoeur of Exeter and Donald Francoeur of Portsmouth; her daughters, Carol Francoeur of Amesbury and Linda L. (Mrs. David) LaPointe of Waltham, Mass.; her sister, Marie Proulx of Holbrook, Mass.; four grandchildren, Michelle LaPointe, Nicholas, Timothy and Stephen Francoeur; and many nieces and nephews.

Robbin A. Merchant

SOUTH BERWICK - Mrs. Robbin A. (McLaughlin) Merchant, 37, of 79 Academy St., died Friday, May 5, 2000, as a result of complications from diabetes at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Born Nov. 7, 1962, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Margaret A. (Robinson) Morin of Kittery, and the late Frederick W. McLaughlin. She attended Portsmouth schools.

She was a member of Christian Life Fellowship in Eliot; Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6; American Legion Auxiliary; Pythian Sisters, and Ivy Temple No. 20 in Kennebunk.

She was the wife of Temple C.F. Merchant.

In addition to her husband of six years and her mother, survivors include five children, Fred Gagnon, Cameron McLaughlin, Justin McLaughlin, Crystal Mesler, and Peggy Gagnon, all of North Berwick; maternal grandmother, Nettie L. Roslon of Somersworth; sister Jennifer Wellwood and her husband, Thomas, of North Berwick; two brothers, Lucas Morin of Kittery, and Mike Morin of Effingham, N.H.; her aunt, Brenda Walton of Portsmouth; uncle, Bruce McLaughlin of Portsmouth; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Frederick W. McLaughlin; five sisters, Patty McLaughlin, Kim McLaughlin, Tony McLaughlin, Kelly McLaughlin and Mary McLaughlin; and two brothers, Scott McLaughlin and Jay McLaughlin.

Serena C. Camacho

NOTTINGHAM - Serena Catherine (Hayden) Camacho, 59, of Raymond Road, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at her home in Nottingham, with her loving family at her side.

Born Oct. 12, 1940, in Phoenix, she was the daughter of Julian Dodge Hayden and Helen B. (Pendleton) Hayden. She resided in Napa Valley, Calif. for 12 years, before moving to Nottingham in 1984.

She received her bachelor of arts degree in 1962 from Colorado College.

She believed in generosity and giving of one's self for the betterment of others. She lived her life giving of her time, talent and knowledge, in a variety of work and civic positions as well as recreational activities.

She worked as a layout artist at New England Printing in Dover, and for five years, proof-read manuscripts at her home. She also was a field office assistant for the American Red Cross for five years.

For two years she co-chaired presidency and then was president for three years of the Nottingham Historical Society. She was also a former member of the Nottingham Planning Board.

She raised and trained, Paladin, a Portugese Water Dog. She showed him at various trials and competitions. She was a member of the Portugese Water Dog Association of America.

She was also an equestrian rider and was a member of various equestrian organizations.

Family was paramount to Serena. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She will be missed, but always remembered by her husband of 34 years, Joseph L. Camacho of Nottingham; her son, Joseph S. Camacho of Atlanta; her daughter, Rena C. King and her husband, Matthew, of Essex Junction, Vt.; two brothers, Julian D. Hayden Jr., of Vancouver, Wash., and Steve D. Hayden of Tucson, Ariz.' one sister, Mary H. Hermans of Friday Harbor, Wash.; two nieces, one nephew, and 13 cousins.

Frank M. Emery Jr.

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - Funeral services for Frank Morgan Emery Jr., 67, of Fort Myers Beach, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, N.H., on Thursday, with services at the Greenland Community Congregational Church, Greenland. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, officiated.

Words of Remembrance and Readings were given by daughter-in-law, Wendy Emery, grandson, Frank M. Emery, IV and sister, Dorothy Hazzard.

In attendance were members of the Greenland Community Congregational Church.

Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, with committal services by the Rev. Carter.

Bearers were Frank M. Emery III, Frank M. Emery IV, David Emery, Peter Jardine, Paul Jardine, and Tim Nelhart.

Joe Sawtelle

To share remembrances of Joe's indomitable, positive and happy spirit, Joe's family would welcome the company and the comfort of his friends and associates at a memorial celebration at Portsmouth High School Auditorium from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, followed by a reception at Yoken's from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Church Service of Thanksgiving for the life of this remarkable, kind and generous man will be held at New Castle Congregational Church on Thursday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., light lunch to follow. Logistics for parking and attendance are available at 436-7943.

To Joe, donations to the construction of the Port of Portsmouth Maritime Museum would be the most "beautiful flowers" of all. Memorial gifts can be sent to the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, 446 Market St., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801.

Frank W. Reinhold

LEE - Frank W. Reinhold, 101, of North River Road, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.

Born Nov. 17, 1898, in Westfield, Mass., he was the son of Bruno and Hedwig (Zenker) Reinhold. He lived in Beverly, Mass., for 39 years, before moving to Lee in 1952.

During World War I, he served in the Navy as an aviation machinist mate, first-class.

He was a member of the Robert G. Durgin A.L. Post No. 67 in Newmarket and was the last World War I veteran in Post 67.

He was a machinery designer for United Shoe Machinery Corp. in Beverly, Mass., retiring in 1964. He was a member of the Masons for 78 years, in the Mount Moriah Lodge, Westfield, Mass., and an honorary member of Rising Star Lodge, Newmarket.

He was the husband of Helen (Nye) Reinhold, who died in 1993.

Survivors include four sons, Donald Reinhold of Seabrook, Robert Reinhold of Epping, Vernon Reinhold and Frank Reinhold Jr., both of Lee; four daughters, Eleanor Hoberg of Palmetto, Fla., Shirley Wall of Epping, Carolyn Roper of Micco, Fla., and Barbara Desautel of Taunton, Mass.; 34 grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great granchildren; and nieces and nephews.

As per his wishes, his body was donated to Harvard Medical School and no services will be held.

The Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, Newmarket, assisted with the arrangements.

Natalie P. Bourassa

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Natalie P. (Davis) Bourassa, 93, of 725 Portsmouth Ave., Greenland, were held Wednesday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Services were held at the Greenland Community Church, with the Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, officiating. Words of remembrance were given by grandson Gary Bourassa and great-granddaughters Shayna Rose Unger and Lauren Sprague. A poem written by daughter Betty Sprague was read by the Rev. Carter.

Ida Morang was organist.

In attendance were members of the Greenland Community Congregational Church and representatives from the Greenland town offices, Greenland Ladies Fire Department Auxiliary, and the Bridgett Graffort Club.

Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, with committal services by the Rev. Carter.

Bearers were David Bourassa, Gary Bourassa, John Sprague, Jim Gagne, Andy Unger, William Minch, Gary Jablonski and Ray Prentiss.

George R. Bertram

ROCHESTER - George R. Bertram, 77, of 16 Easter Lane, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at the Manchester Veterans Hospital after a long period of illness.

Born April 7, 1923, in Chicago, he was the son of George and Caroline (Pappas) Bertram.

He lived in Rochester for the past seven years after moving from Sun City, Ariz. He worked for himself as a watch and clock maker. He served in the Army during World War II, and was later honorably discharged after being injured. He was a life member of the Farmington Disabled American Veterans, The Paralyzed Veterans of America and the 3rd Armored Association.

He was the husband of Mae (Spinney) Bertram for 54 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a brothers; Albert Bertram of California, and Henry Bertram of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
