Jeanie Berndt

PORTSMOUTH _ Jeanie Berndt, 81, formerly of Newport, N.C., died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Weeks of Portsmouth, and Jeanette Drohan of Clifton, N.H.; a son, William Berndt of Hope Mills, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

Alvin M. McIntyre

YORK - Alvin M. McIntyre, 96, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Harbor Home in York, Maine.

Born Sept. 19, 1903, in Leominster, Mass., he was the son of George D. and Aremitta (Mills) McIntyre. He attended schools in Leominster and graduated from Leominster Senior High in 1921 and Bentley College in 1924.

He worked for the United Fruit Co. in its Costa Rica division for two years. Returning to the U.S. in 1926, he was employed by the E.I. DuPont Co. in its Leominster plant, and for two years during World War II in Arlington, N.J., as a cost accountant and control office supervisor until his retirement in 1963.

During retirement he and his wife, Laiti M. McIntyre, traveled extensively in the U.S. and Canada from their home in Dunedin, Fla. They returned to New England in 1976 and have been living in the Seacoast area since then. For the past nine years he had been living with his wife at their daughter's home in Kittery Point.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Leominster and a communicant of the Middle Street Baptist Church of Portsmouth. He was a member of the Bentley College Alumni Association and the Kittery Historical Society.

He was the husband of Laiti M. McIntyre for 73 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard T. McIntyre and his wife, Carolyn, of Raleigh, N.C., and Bruce M. McIntyre and his wife, Sally, of West Newton, Mass.; one daughter, Jean Arris of Kittery Point; eight grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Gene F. Watson Sr.

WATSON - Graveside services for Gene F. Watson Sr., of 245 Middle St., Portsmouth, who died Feb. 9, 2000, will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 7, at Orchard Grove Cemetery, Shapeligh Road, Kittery. A reception for family and friends following the service will be held at the Elks Lodge lounge, Jones Avenue, Portsmouth.

Wanda Schroeder

YORK - Wanda Schroeder, 83, of York Beach, formerly of Allston, Mass., died Monday, April 24, 2000, after a brief period of illness.

She was the beloved wife of the late Boston Police Detective John D. Schroeder, (who lost his life in the line of duty), and the devoted mother of John A. and his wife, Karen, of Feeding Hills, Mass.; Christine Miedema and her husband, Wayne, of South Berwick; Richard and his wife Helen, of Newburyport, Mass.; and Wanda Quinn and her husband Kevin, of York; sister of Helen Midi, Irene McCall and Joseph Dombrowski, all summer residents of York Beach, and the late Hattie Keane, Lottie Keane and Edward Dombrowski. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Richard D. Lathrop

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Richard Daniel Lathrop, 80, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Hampton, died Saturday, April 29, 2000.

Born in Acton, Maine, he was a resident of Zephyrhills for six years.

He was a retired equipment specialist under civil service, and was a veteran of the Navy. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Zephyrhills. He belonged to the Mason Naval Lodge No. 184 in Kittery, Oaks Royal Trowel Club in Zephyrhills, the USS Guadalcanal Task Group 22.3 Association, and was four-time past president of the Down East Western Square Dance Class.

He was the husband of Shirley Lathrop.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Gloria Auger of Hampton; two stepsons, Tom Campbell of South Berwick, and James Campbell of Simsbury, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Jean Bickford of Rochester; a sister, Dorothy Stacy of Zephyrhills; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services to be announced at a later date.

Florence Foss

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Florence Foss, 76, left this world on Friday, April 28, 2000, to be cradled in the arms of the Lord. Her family will miss her, and will celebrate her life and mourn her loss.

Born June 12, 1923, in Dover, she was the fourth child of nine to Fred Cook and Cassie Duffy. She worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II and a riveter on subMarines. After marriage, she worked for many years at Liggetts Drug Store in Portsmouth, and later at J.J. Newberry's.

Survivors include three sons, Roland W. Foss Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Bangor, Maine, Harold C. Foss, and his wife, Sheila, of Mount Vernon, Maine, and Frank H. Foss of West Rockport, Maine; two daughters, Patricia L. Marcum and her husband, Phil, of Lexington, Ky.; and Catherine H. Benedum and her husband, Herb, of Manitowoc, Wis.; 13 grandchildren, Adrienne Foss, Allison Foss, Annette Foss, Chip Foss, Mathew Foss, Mitchell Foss, Ryan Foss, Philip "PJ" Marcum, Morgan Marcum, Heath Benedum, Heather Benedum, Heidi Benedum and Andrew Benedum; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Albert "Pal" Cook, of Florida.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Bonnie Carolyn, in 1946.

Mom, you are the best, we love you and thank you. Love, your children.

Natalie P. Bourassa

GREENLAND - Mrs. Natalie P. (Davis) Bourassa, 93, of 725 Portsmouth Ave., died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 18, 1906, in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of Albert and Ella (Barker) Davis. She was a graduate of Manchester High School.

She was a member of the Greenland Community Congregational Church; Carrie W. Beck Guild; Greenland Ladies Fire Department Auxiliary; Bridget Graffort Club; and the Rockingham County Extension.

She assisted her husband when he served as a trustee of the Greenland Cemetery.

She was the wife of the late Frederick H. Bourassa Sr.

Survivors include a son, Frederick H. Bourassa Jr. and his wife, Priscilla, of Greenland; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Sprague and her husband, John, of Bridgewater, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Elaine Prentiss of Milton, N.H., Cathy Minch of Greenland, David Bourassa of Greenland, Gary Bourassa of Stratham, Gail Jablonski of Newmarket, Marcia Unger of Upton, Mass., John Sprague of Grafton, Mass., and Amy Gagne of Norfolk, Mass.; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Marie A. Kaufman

PORTSMOUTH - Marie A. Kaufman, 92, formerly of 31 Woodworth Ave., died Friday, April 28, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 29, 1907, in Peckelsheim, Germany, she was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Wasmuth. She was a resident of Portsmouth for the past 27 years, moving here from New Jersey.

She was a communicant of St. James Church.

She was the wife of the late John Kaufman, who died in 1970.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan LaFrenier of Greenland and Marie Ebeling of Stroudsburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Kathleen Leddy; Robert, Thomas and Kevin Ebeling; and John, Jennifer and Matthew LaFrenier; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Wasmuth, and a sister, Cecelia Jager.

Theresa D. Young

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Mrs. Theresa D. (Haynes) Young, 67, of 117 Holly Lane, Portsmouth, were held Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel. Lt. Scott Flanders of the Salvation Army, Portsmouth, officiated.

In attendance were representatives of the Frank E. Booma Auxiliary Unit No. 6, American Legion of Portsmouth, and the Bethel Assembly of God Keenager's.

Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Barrington, N.H., with committal services by Lt. Flanders.

Bearers were Jay Jordan, Larry Baker, Barry Baker, Harry Smith, Mike Croteau and Ed Ramos.

American Legion Auxiliary services were held Friday at the chapel by Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6, including Brenda Walton, president; Betty Sanford, chaplain; Shirley Calvert, dept. vice; June Daley, past. dept. vice.; Shirley Williams; Carl Walton, past commander; Karyl Horn, Color Guard; Patricia Belleville; Color Guard; and Richard Brooks, District 3 commander.

Lauris J. Chapman

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Lauris J. Chapman, 70, of 928 South St., were held Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. David Avery, pastor of First Congregational Church of Eliot, officiated.

In attendance were members of the First Congregational Church of Eliot.

Burial was in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham, with committal services by Rev. Avery.

Frank M. Emery Jr.

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - Frank Morgan Emery Jr., 67, of Wells, Maine, and Fort Myers Beach, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000.

Born Jan. 31, 1933, in Stoneham, Mass., he graduated with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of New Hampshire.

In 1970, he established his first company, Emery Engineering. Later, he opened a branch at Wells, Maine, in 1977. He joined his father as a partner in Frank M. Emery Surveyors. He was a professional engineer in Maine and New Hampshire. He retired in 1998.

An avid tennis player, he was a member of the U.S. Tennis Association and played every day either at Bay Oaks, Fort Myers Beach, or with the Sanford Racketeers in Sanford, Maine.

He was the husband of Marita Emery.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Frank M. Emery III of Wells, Maine; three daughters, Donna Greene of Fort Myers, Fla., Elizabeth Randolph of Pomona Park, Fla., and Carol Eaton of Portsmouth, N.H.; a brother, David M. Emery of Greenland, N.H.; sisters, Ruthie Warren of Zephyrhills, Fla., Priscilla Wykes of Greenland, N.H., Mary Lou Hodgdon of Portsmouth, N.H., Dorothy Hazzard of Honolulu, Hawaii; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Christopher Jay Emery, in 1991.

Robert S. Potter

YORK HARBOR - Robert Sanders Potter, 82, died Friday, April 28, 2000.

Born Feb. 28, 1918, in Brookline, Mass., he was the son of Leicester R. and Gladys S. (Sanders) Potter.

A noted artist, he was a former member of the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, Mass., and Chester Vermont Art Guild. He was a member of both the New Hampshire Art Association and the York Art Association, and was a life member of the Southern Vermont Art Center.

His watercolors won numerous awards and are in private collections in the United States, Canada, Holland and Switzerland and in many corporate collections.

Educated at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he served on the staff of the Rhode Island School of Design Art Museum and executed two assignments for Norman Rockwell.

After a career of teaching and several years as editor and publisher of a weekly newspaper, he devoted his life to painting.

He was the husband of Martha Blanchard Potter.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Mark Potter of Lenexa, Kan.; a daughter, Elizabeth Demick of Stephentown, N.Y.; a brother, Leicester R. Potter of Wollaston, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Lester A. Carbonneau

STRATHAM - Lester A. Carbonneau, 77, of Bunker Hill Avenue, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy period of illness.

Born Sept. 10, 1922, in Stratham, he was the son of Eugene and Laura (Wentworth) Carbonneau. A lifelong resident of Stratham, he had worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 34 years.

An Army veteran of World War II, he fought overseas in Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with Four Bronze Stars, and the Silver Star Medal.

He was a member of the Stratham Fire Department, and a member of the Stratham Color Guard.

He worked for the town of Stratham Cemetery and Recycling departments.

He placed wreaths for several years at the Stratham Memorial Hill Park.

He was the husband of Florence (Sparks) Carbonneau of Stratham for 49 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Lester E. (and wife Catherine) Carbonneau of Stratham, and Jeffrey G. (and wife Deanna) Carbonneau of Tacoma, Wash.; four grandchildren, Nicole, Ashley, Christopher and Chase Carbonneau; a sister, Mary Cherbinis of Amesbury, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rose Stuart

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Rose Stuart, 84, wife of Robert C. Stuart, of 65 Pleasant Point Drive, died April 27, 2000, at Webster At Rye in Rye.

She was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Worcester, Mass.

In addition to her husband, survivors include many nieces and nephews.

No services are planned at this time.
