John Comack

RYE - John Comack, 81, of 324 West Road, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at his residence.

Born Nov. 15, 1918, in South Boston, he was the son of Sigmund and Anna (Budukiewicz) Homicz.

He was a self-employed carpenter for 50 years.

He was the beloved husband of Marjorie L. Comack for 56 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Stephen W. Comack of East Kingston; a daughter, Elaine L. Bawden of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Benny Komak of Long Boat Key, Fla., and a sister, Barbara Carbone of Wakefield, Mass.

Lauris J. Chapman

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Lauris J. Chapman, 70, of 928 South St., died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born June 6, 1929, in Newmarket, he was the son of John and Ruth E. (Godfrey) Chapman. He attended Greenland schools.

Before his retirement, he was employed as a pipefitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was the husband of Pauline (Trefethen) Chapman.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Roberta Faye Walsh and son-in-law, William Walsh, and Katherine Caswell, all of Portsmouth; a grandson, Shawn Walsh; three granddaughters, Susan Chapman, Christine Caswell and Shannon Walsh; one great-grandchild, Noah Murray; a brother, John Peter Chapman of Rutland, Mass.; three sisters, Doris Grover of Eliot, June Brackett of Eliot, and Eleanor Ireland of Greenland; and many nieces and nephews.

Martin G. Cyr

DOVER - Martin G. Cyr, retired Army Reserve sergeant major, 69, of 5 Applevale Drive, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 24, 1930, in Van Buren, Maine, he was the son of Patrick and Marie (Dunbay) Cyr. He grew up in Biddeford, and graduated from St. Louis High School. He had lived in Dover since 1958.

He served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He also served in the Army Reserve for 28 years. During those years he served in Portland, Maine, Manchester, Rochester, and at the Hanscom Air Force Base. He retired in 1990 with the rank of sergeant major.

He was a member of Dover Post No. 8 American Legion, and the American Association of Retired Persons. He was treasurer and an active member of the Widowed Person Service.

He was a coommunicant and lector of St. Joseph Church. As a minister of Communion, he brought Holy Communion to the elderly at area rest homes. He also served on the RCIA team.

He was the husband of Doris (Martineau) Boutin-Cyr, whom he married in 1994.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Carol Nagy of Mount Jackson, Va.; two stepson, Marc Boutin of Rochester, and Dennis Boutin of Rollinsford; three stepdaughters, Dolly Boutin of Portland, Ore., Monique Bartoldus of Pousldo, Wash., and Michelle Durelle of Dover; two brothers, Gerald Cyr of Scarborough, Maine, and Edgar Cyr of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sisters, Bernice Goldrup of Waterville, Maine, Kathleen Garon of Suncook, N.H., and Janet Verrier of Biddeford; two grandchildren, Eric and Greg Cyr; eight stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

He was predeceasd by his first wife, Pauline (Richard) Cyr, in 1993; a son, Richard Cyr, in 1995; two sisters, Aurore Cyr and Alexandrine Bard; and three brothers, Hector, Laurence and Andre Cyr.

Vera B. Galle

GREENLAND - Vera Batchelder Galle, 90, of 19 Newington Road, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.

She was the daughter of Charles C. and Louise (Spenser) Batchelder of Methuen, Mass.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, volunteered more than 7,000 hours at Portsmouth Hospital over a period of more than 35 years. She also served as the secretary to the Hospital Guild for many years. She was on the Board of Theatre by the Sea for many years. She had been the secretary of the Greenland Historical Society and Methuen Class of 1923 Reunion Committee.

She was a wonderful, loving, joyous, cheerful, fast-witted woman who brought happiness into the lives of all she touched and will be happily remembered by all who knew her. She had been a longtime member of St. John's Church.

She was the wife of Herbert Gustave Galle for 66 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Chuck Galle of Greenland; her goddaughter, JoAnne Metz; four grandchildren, Stephen Lovell, Linda, Karen, and JoAnne Crowley; cousins Barbara Fruean Eich of Bloomfield, Conn., and Dorothy Jubinville of McLean, Va.

Norman K. Spinney

EXETER - Norman K. "Tom" Spinney, 78, of Elm Street, Exeter, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Veterans Hospital in Manchester after a long illness.

Born March 9, 1922, in Eliot, he was the son of Norman and Grace (Dixon) Spinney. He was a veteran of the Navy and served in World War II.

For many years he was self-employed as the owner of Tom's Auto Body.

He is survived by his daughter, Dianne DeCoff of Alton, N.H.; three sisters, Virginia Munz of California, Arlene Sabin of Vermont, and Melba Gunnison of Maine; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Vera B. Galle

Nancy L. Hobbs

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Nancy L. (Fehr) Hobbs, 77, the widow of Daniel E. Hobbs, of 19 Edgewood Road, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born July 18, 1922, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Henry W. and Lillian T. (Neil) Fehr. She was a graduate of Lowe-Heywood School in Connecticut and received her associate's degree from the University of New Hampshire.

She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for many years and had been a volunteer for the chamber of commerce. She was a member of Strawbery Banke and the Republican National Committee.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Kutz of Annapolis, Md.; a son, Harry Hobbs of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Amy Kutz, David Kutz, Jennifer Kutz, Kelsi Hobbs, Samantha Hobbs, Christina Hobbs, and Rebekah Hobbs; a great-grandchild, Mackenzie Hobbs; a sister, Elizabeth Peters of Charlottesville, Va.; four nieces; and a very close friend, Councilor Evelyn Marconi.

Donald J. L'Italien

YORK - Donald J. L'Italien, 72, of 2 Victoria Court, and formerly of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000 at Century Hill/York Harbor Health Care in York.

Born Jan. 29, 1928, in Manchester, N.H., he was the son of the late George Emery and Beatrice (Landry) L'Italien.

Before his retirement, he was employed at Sprague Energy in Newington, New Hampshire.

He enjoyed playing the trumpet and had played with jazz big bands in the area.

He was the husband of the late Fay L. (Thomas) L'Italien.

Survivors include five sons, Dennis L'Italien of Kittery, Mark L'Italien of Manchester, Brian L'Italien of Turnsville, N.H., Bruce L'Italien of Kittery Point and Duane L'Italien of Portsmouth; one daughter, Gail Hardy of Leesburg, Va.; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Norman L'Italien of New Hampton, N.H.; and a sister-in-law, Theresa Lovely of Manchester.

Kathleen Mickle

PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended funeral services for Kathleen "Katie" Mickle, 39, of 72 Blue Heron Drive, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, yesterday.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth. Monsignor Lawrence Burns, pastor, was celebrant. Altar server was David Palumbo. Organist was Maureen Sheehan and Judy Silverman was soloist.

In attendance were communicants of the church; representatives from Portsmouth High School, Portsmouth Middle School, Portsmouth Athletic Department, Portsmouth High School football, Portsmouth High School basketball, Portsmouth High School baseball, Portsmouth Babe Ruth, Portsmouth Recreation Department, Portsmouth East Little League, Portsmouth National Little League, Portsmouth Little Clipper Football, and Portsmouth Junior Clipper Football.

As the funeral procession passed, representatives from Portsmouth East Little League and Portsmouth Babe Ruth including Brian Currier, Chris Anderson, Matt Anderson, David Semprini, Shane Winslow, Andy Olson, and Patrick Swain stood at attention at the gravesite.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by Monsignor Burns.

Bearers were Rob Mickle, Matthew Mickle, Jonathan Mickle, Mike Anania, Brian Lewton, Jeff Greggoire, and Jerome Wright.

Prayers were offered Tuesday evening at the funeral home by close friends Rick Greggoire and Kathy Anania.

Anthony Scarponi

PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended funeral services for Anthony Scarponi, 48, of 3370 Lafayette Road, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Tuesday.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Fr. Agapit H. Jean Jr., pastor, was celebrant. Altar servers were Richard Ward, Jane Millette, Theresa Hickey, and Joanne Greene. Readings were given by Julie Hayes. Words of remembrance were given by Marcella Scarponi's sister, Gretchen. Organist was Jean Goss and soloist was Janet Green.

In attendance were communicants of the church and a large delegation of family, friends, business associates. Representatives from the City of Portsmouth, Portsmouth High School, and Portsmouth Country Club.

Bearers were Greg Butterfield, Bob Renshaw, Brooks MacDonald, Steve Demarais, Dwight Peters, and Bill Andrews.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Following services, a gathering was held at Bananas Bar and Grille hosted by Sandy Lukas and words of remembrance were given by a close family friend, Mrs. Jean Butler.

Willis T. Ladd Jr.

KITTERY POINT - Willis T. Ladd Jr., 75, of Tenney Hill Road, died Friday, April 14, 2000, at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford, Maine, after a long illness.

Born March 12, 1925, in Liberty, Maine, he was the son of Willis T. and Ruth M. Colby Ladd Sr., and was educated in Liberty schools.

He served with the Navy during World War II.

On May 29, 1954, he married Jeanne E. Rogers in East Hartford, Conn.

He was employed as an automotive machinist for Tra-Kim Machine Shop in Hartford, for 20 years, retiring in 1985. He moved to Maine in October 1997.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and living in St. Cloud, Fla. for 10 years where he had many caring friends, as well as in Connecticut. He also enjoyed buying, repairing and reselling player pianos.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Orient Lodge No. 62 in Connecticut.

He was the husband of the late Jeanne Rogers Ladd. She died Feb. 7, 1997.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Alvin (Jean) Fletcher of Kittery Point; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Joan Holzworth of Windsor, Vt.; a stepson, Arthur Pond of Richford, Vt.; several step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Avon Ladd in 1923, and a sister, Priscilla Brinker in 1990.

Richard P. Sheldon

FARMINGTON, N.H. - Richard P. Sheldon, 68, of 24 Mechanic St., died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, as the result of injuries suffered in a traffic accident.

Born June 13, 1931, in Ware, Mass., he was the son of Charles and Caroline (Quirk) Sheldon. He was a resident of the area for more than 30 years.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1949 and served in the submarine service patrolling the eastern seaboard. He retired as a chief petty officer. He was then employed at Sanders Associates in Nashua until 1978.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 51 in Epping. An avid fisherman and hunter, he was also a member of the Spacetown Beagle Club in Raymond.

He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Succi) Sheldon, who died in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Ann Sheldon of Concord, N.H.; a granddaughter, Catherine Sheldon of Somersworth; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Richard J. Sheldon, in 1995.
