Edward J. Sullivan

CONCORD - Edward J. Sullivan, 84, formerly of Concord, N.H., and most recently of Walnut Creek, Calif., died Sunday, April 16, 2000.

Born May 17, 1915, in Concord, he was the son of Edward J. and Ida Packard Sullivan.

He was the president of the Merrimack Electrotyping Corporation and the Allied Photo Engraving Corporation from 1955 to 1968. While a printer, he invented the paraleveler, a patented machine used in the manufacture of printing plates. From 1968 to 1969 he was the executive vice president of Blanchard Press Corporation of New York and oversaw the operation of Rumford Press in Concord. He also was a founding principal of Tridel Corporation from 1970 to 1972, a housing construction company in Concord. He then bought and operated the Ho-Tei. Inc. catamaran sailing business on the island of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands with his family from 1972 to 1977.

During his years as a Concord businessman, he worked on several boards and was especially interested and active in nonprofit and low-income building and housing projects. He was the chairman of both the Carmelite Monastery and Bishop Brady High School building funds as well as a commissioner on the Concord Housing Authority and Concord Urban Renewal Association. He served as member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He also served on the boards of the Concord Hospital, the Concord Federal Savings Bank, the Diocesan Bureau of Housing and the Carpenter Center in Manchester. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy. He held both a private pilot's license and a Coast Guard ocean operator's license. His hobbies included fishing, boating and flying his plane.

He was the husband of the late Dorothea Ash Sullivan. The couple was married for 46 years.

He is survived by his two children, Maureen Black of Warwick, R.I. and Jim Sullivan of Rye; four grandchildren, Joshua Black, Conor, Casey and Curran Sullivan; and a niece and two nephews. He also leaves behind his best friend and adviser, Monsignor Philip Kenney of Concord.

He was predeceased by his sister Jeanette Merrill of Concord and his brother Lawrence of Norwood, Mass.,

Michael Petrungar

SEABROOK - Michael Petrungar, 85, of 81 Railroad Ave., died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation in Exeter.

He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, Nov. 1, 1914, the son of Louis and Carmella (Alouise) Petrungar.

He worked as a truck driver for the Matthews Trucking Company of Ohio for 10 years and 30 years for Spector Freight Systems of Needham, Mass. He retired from Teamster Local 25 of Boston in 1974.

He was a member of the Trinity United Church; Saint James Lodge No. 102 F and AM of Hampton and held the office of marshal for many years. He was also a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Nashua; Bektash Temple Shrine, Concord; former officer of Tide Mill Chapter No. 67 O.E.S. of Hampton; East Gate Club, Seabrook; Seabrook Happy Senior Citizen's Club; and former member and secretary of the Hampton Senior Citizen's Club.

He moved from Massachusetts in the late 1960s to Raymond and Nashua and had resided in the Hampton/Seabrook area since 1976.

He was the husband of Ruth (Rasmussen) Petrungar for 61 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include one brother, Joe Petrungar of Ashtabula, Ohio; three sisters, Rose Salvato, Mary Ferralo and Caroline Hayes all of Ashtabula; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy Petrungar.

Freda A. Schultze

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Freda A. (Peschel) Schultze, 88, of 293 Rockland St., were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Monday. The Rev. William Gardei, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mrs. Schultze's granddaughter, Alexandra Schultze. "Amazing Grace" and "When You Walk Through A Storm" was sung by granddaughter, Dinah Schultze.

Isabelle D. Sawyer

DURHAM - Isabelle Deane Fry Sawyer, 92, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at her home in Durham, after a period of failing health.

The daughter of Thomas Wilder and Katharine Deane (Jones) Fry, she was born April 24, 1907, in Claremont, N.H., where she spent her childhood years.

She attended Stevens High School, Claremont; North Shore Country Day School, Winnetka, Ill.; National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C.; and Bryant and Stratton, in Boston. After working for a short time at The First National Bank of Boston, she married George Frost Sawyer, of Durham and Andover, Mass., Sept. 26, 1931.

Mr. Sawyer, who died in 1992, was later vice president of the bank, now known as Fleet/Bank Boston. They lived in Andover until his retirement in 1959, when they moved to Durham. She was active in several organizations, including the Andover Home for the Aged, the Lawrence, Mass., General Hospital Auxiliary, the Colonial Dames of America - State of New Hampshire, and the Durham Tuesday Afternoon Club.

She was known not only for her lively wit and gracious hospitality, but also for her loving and caring concern for all those who knew her. She was a collector of people, a true friend to so many.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Frost Sawyer; two sisters, Mrs. Franklin T. (Virginia) Bigelow of Carpinteria, Calif., and Margaret Rogers Fry; and two brothers, Russell T. Fry of Riverton, Wyo., and Thomas E. Fry of Alton, N.H.

Survivors include a son, George F. (Geoff) Sawyer Jr. and a daughter, Elizabeth H. (Lee) Sawyer Klaeson, both of Durham; a grandson, Arthur (Ford) Klaeson of Durham; two granddaughters, Mrs. Barry C. (Pepper) McClone of Rochester, and Mrs. Harry (Lissa) Staven of Richland, Wash.; one great granddaughter, Sara Staven; a brother-in-law, Charles H. Sawyer of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

Allan A. Cushing

RYE - Allan A. Cushing, 77, of 281 Sagamore Road, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Littleton, N.H. on June 13, 1922, he was the son of William and Lillian Phillips Cushing. He grew up and was educated in Littleton.

He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed on Iwo Jima.

Before his retirement, he had been employed as an inventory management supervisor at Pease Air Force Base, where he retired after 25 years of service. After he retired, he ran his own business "Odd Ball Trucking."

He was a former communicant of St. James Church, Portsmouth.

A resident of the Seacoast for the past 48 years, he was an avid hunter and handyman. He was always there if he could help and will be missed by family and friends.

He was the husband of Nina Cushing of Rye for 55 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include two sons, George Cushing and his wife, Donna of Milton, and Randall Cushing and his wife, Ann of Greenland; two brothers, George Cushing of Milton, Vt., and James Cushing of Bangor, Maine; a sister, Mary Delany of Freeport; five granddaughters, Alana, Sarah, Courtney, Kim and Kelly; many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Helen Trombley of Loudon, N.H., and a brother, Charles Cushing of Littleton.

Kathleen Mickle

PORTSMOUTH - Kathleen "Katie" Mickle, 39, of 72 Blue Heron Drive, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, in her home, after a battle with cancer.

Born Oct. 19, 1960, she was raised in North Conway and has lived in Portsmouth for the past 18 years.

She was employed with Heath's Mobil Mart of Portsmouth for the past five years. She was a volunteer in many school and recreation departments. She enjoyed coaching and helping out the children in Portsmouth. She enjoyed the great outdoors such as camping, outside recreation and the beach.

She was the wife of Warren Mickle for 18 years.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by four children, Robert, 17, Matthew, 16, Jonathan, 14, and Whitney, 11; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a tremendous amount of friends.

She enjoyed life to the fullest and hopes her family will remain happy and healthy.

Lilla R. Ricciardelli

EXETER - Lilla R. Ricciardelli, 67, of Crestview Drive, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, in Concord Hospital, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Lynn, Mass., she was the daughter of John and Mary (Piccarello) Ricciardelli. She was raised in Lynn, attended Lynn schools and was a graduate of Lynn English High School. She was a resident of Lynn for all of her life before moving to Exeter in 1995.

She was employed as a sales clerk at General Electric River Works before retiring in 1995 after 42 years of service.

She was an avid card player and was devoted to her family.

She leaves two brothers, Nicholas Ricciardelli of Saugus, Mass., and Eugene Ricciardelli of Lynn; and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, John Ricciardelli.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Solimine, Landergan and Rhodes Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn.

Cremation will be in Harmony Grove Crematory, Salem.

Nathalie M. Goody

YORK - Nathalie M. Goody, 93, formerly of Raydon Road, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at Harbor Home.

Born in Connecticut on March 20, 1907, she was the daughter of Woodrow and Ruth (McCleary) Pierson.

She received her college degree in nursing and had worked for many years in a New York doctor's office.

After her husband's retirement in 1975, they moved back to York. She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church and a member of the Women's Fellowship. She was also a member of the Old York Garden Club and a York Hospital volunteer.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Howard Russell Goody. He died Oct. 23, 1990.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Kimberly S. Bartalomy of York, John E. Goody of Port Washington, N.Y., Matthew D. Goody and Laura J. Bailey, both of Shelter Island, N.Y.; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, David Emery Goody, who died in 1972; and a sister, Barbara Chamberlin, who died in 1997.

Dorothy D. Essex

KITTERY - Dorothy Daisy Essex, 95, of 24 Norton Road, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at her home.

Born in England on March 24, 1905, she was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Jane (Hartwell) Bassnett. She immigrated to the United States with her husband in 1928.

She loved to cook, sing and square dance. She had a special fondness for animals. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kittery Point.

She was the wife of the late George E. Essex Sr.

She is survived by a son, George Essex Jr., of Kittery; two daughters, Diana Taylor of Kittery, and Ruth Beatrice Prosser of Albion, Maine; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Olive H. Sparkes

NEWMARKET - Olive H. Sparkes, 87, of 9 Grant Road, The Pines, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Oct. 27, 1912, in Needham, Mass., she was the daughter of Wendell and Irene Hasenfus. Raised in Needham, she graduated from Needham High School.

For many years, she worked as a policewoman for the town of Needham. Upon retiring, she moved to North Port, Fla., where she lived for more than 20 years before moving to Newmarket in 1998. While living in Needham, she attended Christ Episcopal Church.

She was a two-time Olympic champion. In 1928, at the age of 15, she went to Holland to compete in track. This was the first time a women's team was allowed to compete. In 1936, she went to Berlin to again compete in track. For many years, she coached the girls track team at Needham High School.

She was the wife of the late Thomas H. Sparkes, who died in 1991.

Survivors include three children, Virginia Mizack of Little Gap, Pa., Thomas R. Sparkes of Orfield, Pa., and Shirley Manseau of Newmarket; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and a nephew.

Anthony Scarponi

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. Anthony Scarponi, 48, of 3370 Lafayette Road, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 6, 1951, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Barbara (Callahan) Scarponi of North Palm Beach, Fla., and the late Edmund T. Scarponi.

He was a 1969 graduate of Portsmouth High School, and had attended the University of New Hampshire.

He was employed as a sales manager for Beck's North America for more than 17 years and had formerly been employed as a manager for the Warehouse Restaurant and the Horse of A Different Color.

An avid golfer and member of the Portsmouth Country Club, he was also active in local youth sports and organizations.

He was the husband of Marcella (Carey) Scarponi for 15 years.

In addition to his wife and his mother, survivors include a son, Christopher Carey Scarponi of Portsmouth; a brother, Cal Scarponi and his wife, Kim, of Greenland; aunts; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carl W. Hall

SALEM, N.H. - Carl W. Hall, 47, formerly of Haverhill, Mass., died Friday, April 14, 2000, at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester.

Born in Haverhill, he was the son of Leonard and Isabelle (Noone) Hall of Plaistow, N.H. He was a 1971 graduate of Haverhill High School, and received his bachelor's degree at Franklin Pierce College. He also received his master's degree in business administration at Franklin Pierce.

He was currently a professor of business at Franklin Pierce's Nashua campus. He was previously employed by Wirebelt Co. in Manchester, where he was the director of operations, and then worked for Rockwell Automation, also in Manchester.

He was a softball coach for the Salem Recreation Department and for the St. Joseph Regional softball team in Salem. He was an avid golfer and loved sports.

He was the husband of Paula C. (Winters) Hall for 16 years.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include two daughters, Cerissa of Haverhill, and Erica of Salem; a sister, Nancy and her husband, Marvin Diamond, of Kissimmee, Fla.; three brothers, Leonard Hall and his wife, Joan, of Atkinson, N.H., Edward Felcer and his wife, Sharon, of Haverhill, and Austin Felcer and his wife, Linda, of Kissimmee; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Alicia Hall, in 1984.
