Charles F. Jewell

YORK HARBOR - Charles F. Jewell, 85, of 18 Linnea Lane, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Feb. 11, 1915, in Chelsea, Mass., he was the son of Charles and Katherine (Kennedy) Jewell. He attended local schools and graduated from Malden High School in 1933.

A 17-year Army veteran, he served his country in World War II, and attained the rank of major in the Adjutant Generals' Corps.

He settled in York Harbor 21 years ago, having previously lived in Deering, N.H., and Stoneham, Mass.

He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, last assigned to the Stoneham (Mass.) Office. He was active in the Hillsboro, N.H., American Legion Post and the Boardman-Ellis Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in York.

He was the husband of Mary (Varney) Jewell of York Harbor.

In addition to his wife, survivors include stepchildren Michelle Hart of Cape Neddick, and Richard Wilson and his wife, Joan, of Orange Park, Fla.; his former wife, Dorothy Jewell of Henniker, N.H.; daughters Kathleen M. Walters of Deering, Maureen V. Eagleston of Reading, Mass., Eileen D. Surette of Revere, Mass., Valerie Jewell of Portland, Dorothy F. Damour of Weare, N.H.; a son, Charles F. Jewell Jr. of Deering, N.H.; 17 beloved grandchildren; and 25 beloved great-grandchildren.

Eleanor G. Evans

MARBLEHEAD, Mass. _ Eleanor G. Evans, 92, of Gerrish Island, Kittery Point, and Marblehead, and formerly of Hampton, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in Marblehead.

Born Aug. 12, 1907, in Newmarket, she was the daughter of Garrett and Johanna (O'Connor) Evans. She attended Newmarket schools and was a graduate of the Keene Normal School. She later received her master's degree from Boston University.

She taught first-grade in Newmarket for several years and later in Winchester, Mass. After graduating from Boston University, she held the position of supervisor of the Marblehead elementary schools, and later, the director of elementary schools in New Britain, Conn. She retired in 1971 as director of elementary schools in Melrose, Mass.

She resided in Hampton for many years before making her home in Kittery Point and Marblehead. She was a former communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

Survivors include a niece, Elizabeth Sullivan Arsenault and her husband, Rene, of Kittery Point; her dear friend, Doris Stone of Marblehead; two grandnephews, Brian and Russell Sullivan; two grandnieces, Susan Sullivan and Carol Besade; and a stepniece, Jennifer Meyers.

She was predeceased by a brother, George Evans, and a sister, M. Edna Hammons.

Rosemary Beekmann

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Rosemary (Fry) Beekmann, 65, of 10 Great Bay Drive, Greenland, were held Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home_Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor of the Greenland Community Congregational Church, officiated.

In attendance were members of the Greenland Community Congregational Church.

Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, with committal services by Rev. Carter.

Bearers were Michael Beekmann, John R. Brackett, Samuel Brackett, Daniel Brackett, John H. Brackett and Albert Hertzog.

John T. Emro

PORTSMOUTH - John E. Emro, 74, of 101 Oriental Gardens, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at his home after a brief period of illness.

Born Nov. 14, 1925, in Boston, he was the son of Guy V. and Florence (Melanson) Emro. He lived in New York for several years and has resided in Portsmouth for the past seven years.

He served in the Navy for four years during World War II.

He served on the board of governors for the Benevolent Society of Retarded Children and on the state level until the present time.

He had various positions in the field of configuration management and retired from the Edo Co. in College Point, N.Y., nine years ago.

He was a member of the Anchor Astoria Lodge, served as master from 1977-1978 in College Point, and was deputy grand master in 1982-1983. Other memberships include Wamesio Lodge, Tewksbury, Mass., life member, and Portsmouth Shrine Club and the Kismet Shrine Club of New Hyde Park, N.Y.

He was the husband of Joan (Johnson) Emro of Portsmouth.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Tom and Scott MacDonald, both of New York, and Jack Emro of New Jersey; a daughter, Gayle Emro Cooper of Tennessee; granddaughters Rachel, Margaret, Kerri, Heather, Lauren and Cheryl; grandsons Frank, T.J., Sean, and Matt; three great-grandsons; three sisters Marilyn Dame of Maine, Paula Erickson of Arizona, and Florence Grenier of Alaska; a brother, Guy Emro of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.

Pericles T. Madison

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Pericles T. "Tim" Madison, 72, of 32 Mill Road, North Hampton, were held Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.

Elder Ron Batchelder, of the Associate Bible Students, in Hampton, officiated. The eulogy was given by Elder Kevin Parker, of the Associate Bible Students.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Elder William Passios, of the Associate Bible Students.

Bearers were Aaron Madison, Charles Madison, Joseph Goulis, David Batchelder, Peter Coyman and Timothy Polychronis.

Virginia M. Jenness

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Virginia M. Jenness, 80, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2000.

She will be remembered as an animal lover.

She is survived by numerous friends.

Services will be private.

William G. Feeny

CAPE NEDDICK - Willard Guild "Bill" Feeny, 77, of 1 Stoneybrook died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, Maine.

Born Aug. 23, 1922, in Milton Mills, N.H., he was the son of Preston Hartwell and Minnie Etta (Hersom) Feeny. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He has resided in Cape Neddick for the past 15 years previously living in Rochester. He worked as a setup man, retiring from General Electric Company after 34 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 56 of York.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating.

He was the husband of Rachel N. (Lamper) Feeny for 54 years.

In addition to his wife survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Charles Frederick (Terrilee) Feeny Winn of Cape Neddick; grandchildren, Kelli Feeny Wilhite and Stacia Feeny Winn both of Virginia Beach, Va., Gregory Feeny Winn of Cape Neddick; great-grandchildren, Joshua Guild Winn Wilhite, Paul and Garrett Wilhite both of Virginia Beach, Va.; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Thelma Winkley.

Marguerite H. Grant

BRENTWOOD - Marguerite H. Grant, 105, a resident of the Rockingham Nursing Home since 1993, and former longtime summer and later year-round resident of Plaice Cove, Hampton, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at the nursing home.

She was born in Lawrence, Mass., July 15, 1894, the daughter of Robert and Euphemia (Taylor) Reed.

She was a 1912 graduate of the former Johnson High School in North Andover, Mass. and later attended McIntosh Business School in Lawrence.

She moved to Hampton year round in 1956 coming from Methuen, Mass. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hampton and former member of the First Congregational Church in Methuen. She was an avid reader and enjoyed spelling bee's even in her senior years.

She was the wife of the late Leon S. Grant. He died in 1951.

Family members include one daughter, Barbara G. Richardson of Ellenton, Fla. and Hampton; seven grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Ruth E. Fales.

Lore Kauffmann

EXETER - Lore (Gottlieb) Kauffmann, 78, of 42 Sherwood Forest Park, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, on Jan. 5, 1922, she was the daughter of Sigmund and Erna (Schlessinger) Gottlieb.

Before her retirement, she was a self-employed physical therapist for more than 50 years. For more than 26 years she was active with TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), an internationally known weight-loss organization, founding a chapter in Exeter.

She was a member of Temple Israel in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of Harry Kauffmann for 54 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Ghadirian of Montreal, Canada, and Deborah Kauffmann of Glen Rock, Pa.; two grandsons, Sina Ghadirian and Nayyer Ghadirian; two sisters, Susan Lipsky of Randolph, Mass. and Ruth Ginsberg of Weston, Mass.

The funeral service was held at Temple Israel, Portsmouth yesterday. Rabbi David Mark officiated. Mrs. Kauffmann's daughter, Deborah, gave words of remembrance.

Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rabbi Mark.

Bearers were Missagh Ghadirian, Sina Ghadirian, Nayyer Ghadirian, Mark Ginsberg, George Sharp and Alan Ginsberg.

Evelyn B. Smojice

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Evelyn Belle Smojice, 78, of 155 Charles St., died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at home after a lengthy period of illness.

Born June 17, 1921, in Strafford, N.H., she was the daughter of Oscar and Marion (Wentworth) Hall. For the past 25 years, she resided in Rochester, previously living in Eliot.

She was a licensed hairdresser and had also worked as a waitress at Fernald-Hacketts Restaurant in Rochester for many years. She also worked in the cafeteria at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.

She was a member of the Piscataqua Chapter No. 90 Order of Eastern Star and the D.A.V.

She enjoyed summering at her cottage on Lovell Lake in Wakefield, N.H. Among her hobbies were knitting, sewing, cooking, gardening and bowling.

She was the wife of the late Ebrue "Smokey" Smojice, who died in 1998.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth Wagner of Milton, N.H.; a daughter, Murlene Loomis of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Avis Aldrich of Rochester; several nieces and nephews; her dog "Fuzzy"; and her special cats.

Rev. Claude J. Wivell

The Rev. Claude J. Wivell, 83, formerly of Denver, Pa., died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Fairmount Homes, Ephrata, after a lengthy period of illness.

Born in Ettrick, Va., he was the son of Joseph B. and Elsie Althouse Wivell.

He was a missionary in the Democratic Republic of Congo for 10 years. He later served as missionary pastor in Maine.

He and his wife served with Unevangelized Tribes Mission and later with Baptist Mid-Missions of Cleveland.

The Augusta Baptist Church in Augusta, Maine, and Faith Baptist Church in Kittery, Maine, from 1972 to 1982, were founded under his ministry.

He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Akron, Pa.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a 1947 graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School, Maytown, Pa., and a graduate of the former Lancaster School of the Bible, now Lancaster Bible College.

He enjoyed gardening, planting trees and walking.

He was married to Anna M. Gehman Wivell for 53 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Stephen J., married to Janis Kinworthy Wivell of Melbourne, Australia; three daughters, Claudia A., married to David E. Heilman, Priscilla F., married to David Tysiachney, and Dorcas E., married to Douglas E. Heilman Sr., all of Denver; 17 grandchildren; and three sisters, Eva Stief and Gladys Barry, both of Lancaster, and Mildred, married to Robert Miller of East Earl, Pa.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Lloyd, Clyde and Clair, and two sisters, Thelma and Erla.
