Dorothy M. Thomas

MELROSE, Mass. - Dorothy M. Thomas, 94, of Melrose, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Normandy Senior Care Center, Melrose.

Born Jan. 1, 1906, in Melrose, she was the daughter of Andrew and Bertha F. (Davison) Myrick. She lived in Melrose for many years.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a direct descendant of patriots Robert Newman and John Hancock. She was also a member of the Melrose Garden Club.

She was the wife of the late Nelson Wingate Thomas.

Survivors include a son, Donald O. Thomas, and his wife, Jan, of Wakefield, Mass.; a daughter, Jeannette Vansteensburg, and her husband, Ed, of Portsmouth; a sister, Louise H. Herling of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Matilda Kaminski

HAMPTON - Matilda "Tillie" Kaminski, 86, of 93B Winnacunnet Road, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, the day before her 87th birthday, of a sudden illness.

Born March 26, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth (McNulty) Ruege. For the past 23 years, she resided in Hampton, where she was active in the First Baptist Church and the local seniors group.

She was an avid reader and also enjoyed bowling and walking. She was a longtime volunteer at Operation Blessing in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of the late Wallace Kaminski, who died in 1968.

Survivors include four sons, George Schigotzki of Nassau, N.Y., Robert Schigotzki of Spring Hill, Fla., Arthur Schigotzki of Hackensack, N.J., Thomas Schigotzki of Pear River, N.J.; a daughter, JoAnn Pinard of Hampton; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sons, Wallace Kaminski and John Schigotzki; two sisters, Anna Ruege and Helen Piorkowski; and a brother, Ernest Ruege.

Thomas F. Kiernan

YORK - Thomas Francis Kiernan, 70, of 68 Scotland Bridge Road, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born May 9, 1929, in Boston, Mass., he was the son of Edward and Veronica Kiernan. He attended Boston schools, graduated and worked as a machine operator. He joined the Navy as an apprentice seaman with the U.S. Naval Reserve. Discharged in July 1947, he enlisted in the Army. Trained as an aerial gunner, he saw the Army Air Forces change from the Air Corps to the U.S. Air Force. Flying B-29s from 1947 to 1951, he was stationed at bases over the globe. His military action during World War II and the Korean War, earned him awards such as: United Nation's Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal (with 3olc), entitlement to the Army of Occupation with Japan Clasp, Korean Service Medal with one Silver Star and one Bronze Star.

Discharged as a staff sergeant in 1951, he came to York Harbor to work for relatives and attend UNH on the G.I. Bill.

For 40 years, he operated a hardwood flooring company. This business continues to service the Seacoast area by his son, James.

He was a talented craftsman who enjoyed life. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include siblings Peggy Lovejoy of California, Sarah Severi of Massachusetts, Ruth Fields, Walter Kiernan and William Kiernan, all of Maine; former wife Doreen Kiernan and all surviving children of York include Thomas M., James E., Patrick W. and Kelly A.; five loving grandchildren of York: Mathew, Nicole, Christopher, Ashley and James Kiernan; two daughters-in-laws, also of York, Carla and Kim Kiernan.

He was predeceased by Buddy Foley, Neil, Edward, and Justin Kiernan.

A private service will be held by the family. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Edna C. Wells

KITTERY - Edna C. Wells, 88, of 17 Picott Road, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born May 24, 1911, in Dover, N.H., she was the daughter of Arthur and Addie (Johnson) Pettigrew and was a 1930 graduate of R.W. Traip Academy in Kittery.

She attended Eliot United Methodist Church in Eliot.

She was the wife of the late Flavius E. Wells, with whom she worked for many years managing their lumber business.

Survivors include two sons, Owen W. Wells of Falmouth, Maine, Wayne M. Wells of Milford, N.H.; two daughters, Laura A. McCann of Greenland, and Darlene L. Hudson of Kittery, with whom she resided; a brother, Willis Pettigrew of Kittery; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Leonore E. Hudson

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Leonore E. (Alward) Hudson, 88, of 225 Wibird St., died Friday, March 24, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born Dec. 18, 1911, in Amesbury, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Lester E. and Mary E. (McFarland) Alward.

She was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of the late Joseph Hudson.

Ronald W. Olmstead

NORTHWOOD, N.H. - Ronald Walker Olmstead, 89, of Sherburne Hill Road, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Concord Hospital, after a brief period of illness.

Born July 13, 1910 in Chelsea, Mass., he was the son of Frank T. and Ruth Walker Olmstead. He graduated from Winchester High School, Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., and received his master's degree from the Amos Tuck School of Business in Hanover.

He was employed as treasurer of Utica Drop Forge and Tool Corp. in Utica, N.Y., before becoming the comptroller of the University of New Hampshire and later the budget director of the University System of New Hampshire in Durham.

He was a past president and member of the Rushlight Club, having received its highest honor, the Leroy Thwing Award. He did extensive research on early lighting, especially related to articles in his own collection.

He was a member of the National Wildlife Federation, the National Rifle Association, the Dartmouth Class of '32, the Dartmouth Alumni Association, the Ledyard Canoe Club, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, the Early American Industrial Association, the Appalachian Mountain Club, NHPTV, N.H. Historical Society and the Society for the Protection of N.H. Forests.

He loved the outdoors, including camping, hiking, canoeing, skiing, rock and fossil studies, birds, weather, the ocean, hunting and fishing. He was also an avid reader and loved auctions and antiques.

He was the husband of Beatrice (Wood) Olmstead of Northwood for 63 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. James (Jeanne) Eaton of York, and Mrs. Winslow (Barbara) Carr of Northwood; four grandchildren; a sister Ruth Roundy of Beverly, Mass.; and three nieces and two nephews.

W. Ruth Turner

KITTERY - W. Ruth Turner, 89, of U.S. Route 1, Kittery, formerly of Lincoln, Mass., died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at The Homestead Nursing Home, Kittery.

Born Sept. 19, 1910, in Belpre, Kan., she was a daughter of William and Katherine (Neiswinder) Yeatts, and attended schools in Kansas.

She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, Acton, Mass.

She was the wife of the late Elton L. Turner

Survivors include a son, Leon Turner and his wife, Willie, of Cape Neddick; a brother-in-law, Paul Turner of Belle Vista, Ark.; a stepsister, Mary Freidley of Mora, Mo.; four grandchildren, Terry Turner of Menlow Park, Calif., Tracy Turner of Dixfield, Maine, Todd Turner of Avon, N.Y., and Tammy Turner of Portland, Ore.; a great-grandson, Jesse Rein of Springfield, Mass.

Birtie E. Sparks

READING, Mass. - Birtie E. (Clearman) Sparks, 74, of 1264 Main St., died Thursday, March 23, 2000.

Born July 16, 1925, in Alabama, she had resided in Reading, Mass., for 20 years, moving there from New Hampshire. She had been employed as a data processor at the Lahey Clinic.

She drove Bermudian cancer patients to Lahey Clinic for treatments and was a volunteer driver for the Reading Elder Services. She was also an avid gardener.

She was the wife of the late Chester H. Sparks.

Survivors include three daughters, Donna L. Smith and her husband, Henry, of Reading, Mildred A. Polito and her husband, Charles, of Stratham, N.H., and Lee Ann Curran and her husband, Ronald, of Colony, Texas; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dwain Goode

YORK - Funeral services for Dwain "Abe" Goode of Eliot were held Friday, March 24, 2000, at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

In attendance were family, friends from his neighborhood in South Eliot, close fellow outdoorsmen and representatives from Shop 17 of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

The services were conducted by the Rev. Stan Rockafellow of the Baptist Church in Eliot. Fond words of remembrance were spoken by his daughter, Vicki O'Brien, and his sister, Harriet Browne.

Burial followed at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot.

Arrangements by Jeffrey S. Pelkey, director.

Rose E. Metivier

KITTERY - Rose "Toby" Ellen Metivier, 78, of Langton Road, wife of the late Joseph C. Metivier, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at her residence.

Born Jan. 31, 1922, in Pittsfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Addison and Rose (Donlon) Wade.

Mrs. Metivier, along with her husband, developed Madison Shores in Madison, N.H., as well as Sebago Harbor Shores in Naples, Maine. She operated January's Restaurant in Naples. She also worked with her family at Rockingham Hotel and Warren's Lobster House.

She made many wedding and special occasion cakes for friends and family. She loved to travel and spend time with her grandchildren, especially to Las Vegas.

She had a street named after her in Kittery Point (Rose Ellen Lane).

Survivors include one son, Joseph C. Metivier II and his wife, Sharon, of South Berwick; a daughter, Patricia McCann and her husband, Peter, of Kingwood, Texas; two brothers, Edward Wade and his wife, Allana, of Englewood, Fla., and Peter Wade; brother-in-law Edward Metivier of Kingston, N.Y.; sister-in-law Cecile Metivier of Worcester, Mass.; grandchildren Kelly McCann of LaQuinta, Calif.; Jessica McCann of Honolulu; Valerie McCann of Santa Fe, N.M.; Megan Metivier of South Berwick; and Joseph C. Metivier III, South Berwick; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth M. Turner

PORTSMOUTH - Elizabeth Moulton Turner, 89, of 346 Pleasant St., formerly of Oakland Street in Melrose, Mass., passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at her home.

Born March 4, 1911, in Springfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Frank and Edith (Faulkner) Moulton. She was a lifelong resident of Melrose before moving to Portsmouth last year. She was a 1928 graduate of Melrose High School and a 1932 graduate of Mount Holyoke College. Retired, she had worked as a chemist with the NECCO Co., Harvard University, and Mass General Hospital.

In Melrose, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, a life member and past president of Kappa Delta Psi, and Community Associates of Melrose.

An avid reader, she also loved music and was a longtime subscriber to the Boston Symphony.

She was the wife of the late Henry Albert Turner, who died in 1989.

Survivors include a daughter, Meredith Turner Stokes of Wellesley, Mass.; a son, H. Dixon Turner and his wife, Monique, of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Juliet (Stokes) Macken of Wynnewood, Pa., Justin D. Stokes of London, England, Kimberly M. Turner, Bryce D. Turner and Jacqueline E. Turner, all of Portsmouth.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Adrian Turner, and a sister, Marjorie F. Cochrane.

Antoinette (Tina) Marie Cronk

PORTSMOUTH - Antoinette (Tina) Marie Cronk, of Rainbow Apartments, 75 Longmeadow Lane, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born June 4, 1953, in Key West, Fla., she was the beloved daughter of John and Rose (Napolitan) Cronk. A graduate of Portsmouth High School and St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurenburg, N.C., she also did graduate work at the universities of Maine and New Hampshire. While in college, she was a member of the Writers' Guild and was a published poet. Her writings were hung in the Randall Jarrell Room at the University of North Carolina.

She was an advocate for the handicapped on the local, state and national levels. While at Betty's Dream, Rainbow Apartments, she served as president of the Rainbow Apartments Tenants Association and was coordinator of the Night Aide and Floater Program. She also served on the Night Aide and Fund Raising committees. She served as a mentor and counselor to her fellow tenants, advising them on how to procure their medical needs and helping them to write letters.

She was a volunteer for the Jerry Lewis Telethon and worked to make independence for the handicapped a reality.

She loved children and was a volunteer at Dondero School for many years.

She was an avid gardener.

A Kennedy family admirer, she did extensive research on their history.

Natalie Jacobson was her role model and she corresponded with her often.

In addition to her parents, survivors include a sister, Mrs. Rosemarie House of Portsmouth; a brother, John MF Cronk of Barrington; a sister-in-law, Mary Cronk of Barrington; three nephews, Walter E. and Eric J. House of Westford, Mass., and John James Cronk of Barrington; a niece, Katherine Elizabeth Cronk, also of Barrington; and her many beloved friends at Rainbow Apartment, Betty's Dream.
