Ronnie W. Manson

PORTSMOUTH - Ronnie W. Manson, 52, of 870 Woodbury Ave., succumbed to his courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at his home.

Born Nov. 12, 1947, in Portsmouth, the son of Wallace and Alice Diane (Davis) Manson, he served 25 years in the military, retiring from the Navy in April 1990. He was a 1990 graduate of ECPI College of Technology in Virginia Beach, Va., with a degree in electronics. He was a licensed pilot and an avid pool player, last playing for the Billiards Congress of America League at Legends in Portsmouth.

He had been employed at the Portsmouth depot of Konica Photo Imaging since 1990.

He was a member of VFW Post 168 in Portsmouth.

Survivors include his wife Delores (Hatcher) Manson, whom he married in December 1979 in Peoria, Ill.

Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Lori, and a stepson, James, both of Virginia; an aunt, Mrs. Margaret Hartford of New Castle; and numerous extended family members.

He was predeceased by his father and stepmother, Wallace and Frances Manson, and his mother and stepfather, Diane and Orville Knapp.

Birtie E. Sparks

READING, Mass. - Birtie E. (Clearman) Sparks, 74, of 1264 Main St., died Thursday, March 23, 2000.

Born July 16, 1925, in Alabama, she had resided in Reading, Mass., for 20 years, moving there from New Hampshire. She had been employed as a data processor at the Lahey Clinic.

She drove Bermudian cancer patients to Lahey Clinic for treatments and was a volunteer driver for the Reading Elder Services.

She was the wife of the late Chester H. Sparks.

Survivors include three daughters, Donna L. Smith and her husband, Henry, of Reading, Mildred A. Polito and her husband, Charles, of Stratham, N.H., and Lee Ann Curran and her husband, Ronald, of Colony, Texas; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Easter H. O'Brien

PORTSMOUTH - Easter Helen O'Brien, 87, of 70 Manor Drive, passed away Monday, March 20, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born April 7, 1912, in Hallowell, Maine, she was the daughter of Peter and Ella (Baker) Nolan and was a resident of Portsmouth for most of her life.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Teachers Training College. She retired from teaching at St. Patrick School after many years.

A communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church, she was very active with the Retired Teachers Association, the senior citizens, and Golden Age Club.

She was the wife of the late Hugh J. O'Brien Sr., who died in 1995, for 60 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Maureen Cozad of Liberty, Mo., and Sharon Couture of Barrington; a son, Hugh J. O'Brien Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Carl F. Smith Jr.

NEWFIELDS - Carl F. Smith Jr., 87, of 67 Piscassic Road, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

He was born March 24, 1912, in Somerville, Mass., the son of Carl F. and Ina C. (Harris) Smith Sr.

He was raised in Lexington, Mass., and attended schools there. He lived in Newfields for most of his life. He worked in the dietary department at the Exeter Hospital for several years. Prior to this he was a chef at the Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway for many years. He had also worked as a receiver for the former Champagne and Grand Union supermarkets.

He was a member of the Star in the East No. 59, F. & A.M. of Exeter, a member of the Gilman Grange No. 1 of Exeter, and enjoyed being outdoors. He was an avid gardener and had a farm stand selling blueberries and vegetables.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen D. (Eastman) Smith of Newfields.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Kevin F. Smith of Camarillo, Calif., Brian T. Smith of Newmarket, Carl F. Smith III of Epsom, N.H., and Christopher T. Smith of Nottingham; three daughters, Kathleen A. Dixon of Newfields, Muriel E. Burke of Exeter and Maureen T. Smith of Newfields; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Lombardo of Waltham, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

Roger W. Smith

HAMPTON - The funeral for Roger W. Smith, 68, of 13 Edgewood Drive, who died March 19, 2000, was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father Griffin. Pallbearers were Charles Lamie Sr., Charles Lamie Jr., Charles Brindamour and Arthur Brady. Honorary pallbearers were Cloyd Straub and George Durepo.

Francis J. Barrett

DOVER - Francis J. "Frank" Barrett, 62, of 18 Riverside Drive died Tuesday March 21, 2000, at the New England Medical Center in Boston from complications of cancer after a successful liver transplant.

Born Sept. 7, 1937, in Lowell, Mass., he was the son of John F. and Leona E. (Dutile) Barrett. He was a graduate of the Keith Academy, and after moving to Dover in 1953 he was a graduate of Dover High School. He also attended Merrimack College.

He was a self-employed land surveyor, was licensed in New Hampshire and Maine, and owned and operated Barrett Associates. He was also a former employee of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, McKenna Associates, Iofolla, Rockingham Security, Robinson Construction and the Pease Development Authority.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church and the former Holy Name Society.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married in 1962, Kathleen (O'Brien) Barrett.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Michael Barrett, and two daughters, Kathleen Barrett and Margaret Barrett, all of Dover; four grandchildren, Shaun, Kayla, Zachary and Matthew; three aunts, Beatrice Cohen of Portsmouth, Bertha Jalbert of Lugoff, S.C., and Lucille Leach of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and numerous cousins.

Paul W. Hobbs

NORTH HAMPTON - Paul W. Hobbs, 92, of 2 Elm Road, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at his home in which he was born.

Born June 2, 1907, in North Hampton, he was the son of the late Joseph O. and Annie (Hoyt) Hobbs. He was a 1925 graduate of Hampton Academy, and later received his bachelors' degree in animal science from the University of New Hampshire in 1929, where he was a founding member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

A longtime Portsmouth businessman, he owned and operated Hobbs Insurance Agency in Portsmouth for 50 years. He was also an active farmer at the family farm raising show animals, which included a herd of 75 Brown Swiss cattle and later a flock of 75 Hampshire sheep, which won many awards over the years.

He served New Hampshire as a state Rep. to the General Court from 1940-1941, and served on the governor's staff of Governor Robert O. Blood in an honorary position. He also served on the Governors Council and was the town representative to the council from 1948-1949.

He served the town of North Hampton as selectman, volunteer firefighter, cemetery trustee and was a former trustee of the trust funds. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, a former member and past president of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, member of the Warwick Club, Portsmouth Country Club and originator of the twilight league, and was also an avid bowler.

He served on the board of directors of the First National Bank of Portsmouth for 55 years, was a former board of director for the New Hampshire S.P.C.A., a former trustee of Hampton Academy and Winnacunnet High School, member of the University of New Hampshire 100 Club and Presidents Club, member of the Farm Bureau, and several agricultural organizations.

He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (Tarr) Hobbs for 68 years, who died in 1999.

Family members include a son, P. Kendall Hobbs of St. Charles, Ill.; a daughter, Joanne H. Martin of North Hampton; five grandchildren, Kimberly Martin Nadeau and her husband Arthur, Glenn A. Martin and his wife, Lisa, all of North Hampton, Lianne Gough, Jennifer Mayer and her husband, Jim, Paul K. Hobbs Jr., all of St. Charles, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Kara Martin and Heidi Nadeau; nieces and nephews.

Easter (Nolan) O'Brien

PORTSMOUTH - Easter (Nolan) O'Brien, 87, of Manor Drive, died March 20, 2000. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Portsmouth.

Stephen S. Short Sr.

WAKEFIELD - Stephen S. "Steve" Short, Sr., 50, recently of 396 Woodside Lane, formerly of Brentwood, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at his home after a sudden illness.

Born May 3, 1949, in Newburyport, Mass., he was the son of Charles G. and Jessie M. (McClure) Short. He was raised in Salisbury, Mass., and later moved to Hampton, where he was a 1967 graduate of Winnacunnet High School. He was a veteran serving in the Army.

He owned and operated Shorts Wholesale Supply Company Inc. of Brentwood, and Rochester for more than 20 years.

Family members include a son, Stephen S. Short Jr.; a daughter, Elissa Short both of Exeter; two brothers, Robert A. Short of Newton, N.H., and Charles G. Short Jr., of Amesbury, Mass.; a granddaughter; five nephews; an aunt; and cousins.

Kathleen L. Gilmore

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Kathleen (Kay) L. Gilmore, 94, of King George, Va., formerly of Kittery and Portsmouth, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at the Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg.

Born May 26, 1905, in Concord, she was the daughter of Andrew and Grace (Cofran) Leary. She moved to Portsmouth at age 10, and was a 1923 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

She was a telephone operator in Portsmouth for about 12 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and enjoyed her family, needlework, piano playing, reading, and baseball games. In her later years she helped her husband in his battle with rheumatoid arthritis.

She spent most of her adult life in Kittery. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore enjoyed spending their winters in Florida, their summers in Shapleigh, Maine, and visiting family members in the South and New England.

She was the wife of Jason Gilmore for 61 years.

Survivors include a son, Robert E. Gilmore of Richmond, Maine; a daughter, Virginia G. O'Brien of Dahlgren, Va.; two sisters, Marion Bridges and Barbara Wyman, both of Kittery; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Other loved family members include a daughter-in-law; son-in-law; grandson-in-law; and also sisters- and brothers-in-law.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Andrew Leary and Richard Leary of Kittery, and Paul Leary of Braintree, Mass.

W. Ruth Turner

KITTERY - W. Ruth Turner, 89, of U.S. Route 1, Kittery, formerly of Lincoln, Mass., died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at The Homestead Nursing Home, Kittery.

Born Sept. 19, 1910, in Belpre, Kan., she was a daughter of William and Katherine (Neiswinder) Yeatts, and attended schools in Kansas.

She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, Acton, Mass.

She was the wife of the late Elton L. Turner

Survivors include a son, Leon Turner and his wife, Willie, of Cape Neddick; a brother-in-law, Paul Turner of Belle Vista, Ark.; a stepsister, Mary Freidley of Mora, Mo.; four grandchildren, Terry Turner of Menlow Park, Calif., Tracy Turner of Dixfield, Maine, Toss Turner of Avon, N.Y., and Tammy Turner of Portland, Ore.

Dwain A. Goode

ELIOT - Dwain A. "Abe" Goode, 54, of 1 Spring Lane, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at his residence surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on March 23, 1945, in Portland, he was the son of Alvin and Vesa (Kennedy) Goode. He had attended schools in Aroostook County and served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He had been employed at the Ron-Bet Company in Portsmouth, and later at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a sheetmetal worker in Shop 17. He was a member of the Shipyard bowling league. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed his four-wheeler. He enjoyed the love of his family and grandchildren.

He was the husband of Sandra Hooke Goode for 24 years. They were married on July 19, 1975.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Vicki) O'Brien of South Berwick; two sisters, Harriet Browne of Florida, and Mrs. Bradley (Janice) O'Sullivan of Rochester; his mother-in-law, Hazel Hooke of Eliot; two grandchildren, Kyle P. and Dayna O'Brien of South Berwick; and a dear friend, Gerald Mitchell of Dyer Brook, Maine.

He was predeceased by a twin brother, Blaine Goode.

Earl R. Salley Jr.

RYE - Earl R. Salley Jr., 72, of Alehson Street, Rye, died, March 17, 2000, after a brave battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He leaves behind his wife, Sheila, six children, two stepchildren as well as 12 grandchildren, his mother and a sister. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 8, 2000, the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.
