Abbie Brownell

KAIAUA, NEW ZEALAND - Abbie Jean (Deanie) Northrop Brownell, 82, of Kaiaua, New Zealand, formerly of Rye and Portsmouth, died March 15, 2000.

Born Oct. 19, 1917, in Watertown, N.Y., she was the daughter of S. Brown and Constance Remington Northrop. In 1940, she married Hollis L. (Brownie) Brownell, who died in 1961.

During her long and fruitful life, Deanie held a number of positions including: personnel manager for Untied Airlines in Denver in the 1950s; housemother (and student) at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. in the early 1960s; director of International House, the Mid-Town Service Center, and the Active Retirement Center at Pace University (all in New York City) during the late 1960s and 1970s; director of Carlton House Retirement Home in Jamaica Plain, Mass., and manager of the Whipple House Apartments in Portsmouth in the early 1980s; an assistant to the librarian and trustee of the Rye Public Library prior to her move to New Zealand in 1997.

Deanie came out of retirement in New Zealand where she was head librarian of the local library and co-manager of a commercial fruit orchard, as well as being an active member of the local tourism promotion group, newspaper, and garden club. She was a co-founder of EcoQuest-UNH New Zealand Study Abroad Program, a hands-on program for graduate students in ecology linked with the University of New Hampshire.

Survivors include a son, Willard N. Brownell of Kaiaua, New Zealand; a granddaughter, Holly Bogle of Seattle; a brother, S. Brown Northrop Jr. of Watertown, N.Y.; a sister, Carol N. Mitchell of Rye; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will always remember her wit and wisdom.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Deanie Brownell EcoQuest Scholarship Fund, c/o R.B. Mitchell, PO Box 270, Stratham, NH 03885, or to the Rye Public Library, Rye, NH 03870.

Bruce E. Walker

RYE - The funeral for Chief Bruce E. Walker of the Rye Fire Department was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The procession was escorted to the Bethany Congregational Christian Church in Rye Center by the firefighters who served under him, and the Rye Fire Department Color Guard and bagpipers.

The Rev. Robert J. Whittet, a firefighter and Fire Department chaplain, conducted services in the church. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor of St. Theresa Church in Rye Beach, offered the scriptural readings.

Jan Stover was organist. Bagpipers were firefighters Donald Matheson and Mathew Newton.

Words of remembrance were offered by Tom Hague, Leon Blaisdell, Brian Tutt, Bob Vincent and Mel Low.

The funeral cortege, which included a regiment of regional fire, law enforcement, and safety personnel, processed past the Rye fire station, where chief's call was sounded, and under an archway consisting of two ladder engines and an oversized United States flag, en route to Central Cemetery.

Committal services were conducted by the Rev. Whittet. "Amazing Grace" was played. The flag, which covered the casket, was folded and presented to Chief Walker's widow, Margaret A. Walker.

Pallbearers were Chief Thomas Lambert of the North Hampton Fire Department; Chief Rick Plummer of the Portsmouth Fire Department; Chief Richard White of the New Castle Fire Department; Rick Mason, director of the New Hampshire Fire Academy; Lt. John Lear, Lt. Alden Philbrick, firefighter Brian Tutt and firefighter Ken Moynahan, all of the Rye Fire Department; all under the direction of Mark Zartarian of the Rye Fire Department.

Paul E. Ross

SOMERSWORTH - Paul E. Ross, 64, of 13 Coles Pond Road, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Born in Dover, he was the son of Donald "Spud" and Elviney "Billie" (White) Ross. His family moved to Portsmouth when he was a year old. He was educated in Portsmouth schools and was a 1954 graduate of Portsmouth High School. He was a 1958 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. He also attended St. Anselm College, majoring in criminology.

He had been employed for many years with Beneficial Finance Co. in Portsmouth, later becoming a member of the UNH Police Department, serving for 12 years.

He was a member of the Naval Reserves Submarine Division 1-34. He was in Demolay and became a 32nd Degree Mason with the Portsmouth chapter and was also involved in the Scottish Rites, where he was a piper.

He served as an auxiliary policeman with the city of Portsmouth. He was an avid scuba diver and was a member of the Portsmouth Police Scuba Search and Rescue, aiding area police in their investigations. He won numerous awards for sharpshooting, including being the only shooter from the six New England states to ever win the National Championship Police Combat Match in 1969.

In later years, he was employed as a security guard by Fleet Bank, retiring in 1995. He was an honorary member of the New Hampshire Policeman Association and of the Masons in Portsmouth.

He was known by many people as a person with a quick wit, and enjoyed telling jokes. He was an avid runner, had participated in the Senior Olympics and was involved with the restoration of the Rochester Opera House.

He was the husband of Freda (Billingsley) Ross.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Scott Ablett of Dover, and Donald Ross of Greenland; three grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Sandy Freeman Landsberg of Greenland; three nieces; and seven stepchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Betsy Gorton, and his stepfather, Dr. C. Donald Weathers.

Faith R. Palmer

EXETER - Faith R. Palmer, 65, of Peach Street, died suddenly Thursday, March 16, 2000, at her home.

Born Jan. 19, 1935, in Exeter, she was the daughter of Bernard and Ethel (Herrmann) Palmer. Raised in Nottingham, she attended elementary school there and then attended Robinson Seminary in Exeter. She had lived in Durham, Newmarket, Kensington, and for most of her life, in Exeter.

For many years she worked as a packer, shipper and sizer at Elton Apple Orchard. Twenty-eight years ago, she became a licensed practical nurse and worked at Greenleaf Manor. At the time of her retirement three years ago, she was employed at Port Rehabilitation Center, Newburyport, Mass.

She was an avid reader.

Survivors include her three children, Naomi Twombly of Northwood, Norman Maryea of Deerfield, and Roberta Maryea of Eliot; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her two sisters, Hilda Norton Fields and Brenda L. Rudd.

Dorothy R. McPhee

PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy R. McPhee, 78, of 316 Coolidge Drive, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long period of failing health.

Born June 10, 1921, in Bath, Maine, she was the daughter of Evie and Regina (MacLellan) Babine. She was a 1938 graduate of Morse High School in Bath.

She was a Bronze Life Master in the American Contact Bridge League. A member of the board of directors of Area Home Care and Family Services of Portsmouth, she was also a volunteer with Income Tax Assistance for the elderly and an avid bridge player with the 10 No-Trump bridge group of York.

She was a communicant of St. James Church.

She was the wife of the late Lawrence L. McPhee.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Casey and her husband, Michael, of Wilbraham, Mass., and Jean Tanguay and her husband, Paul, of Bradford, Mass.; a son, Robert McPhee of Roanoke, Va.; five grandchildren, Matthew Casey, Megan Casey, Daniel Tanguay, Jennifer Tanguay and Andrea Tanguay; two sisters, Stella McLaughlin of Damariscotta, Maine, and Clare Sturgeon of Bath; three brothers, Bussie Babine of Brunswick, Maine, Charles Babine of Lafayette, Ky., and Clarence Babine of Bath; and several nieces and nephews.

Earl Bethel

LAS VEGAS - John Earl Hesketh Bethel, 28, originally of Exeter, died Friday, March 17, 2000, of complications from diabetes. He was living and working in Los Angeles and Las Vegas as a professional musician.

Earl is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Brown University. He had been working in the music industry in Los Angeles for the past five years and recently joined Blue Man Group, which premiered this month at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas.

Earl is survived by his parents, Bonnie Taylor and John Bethel; his grandmother, Beatrice Price; his sister, Gwen; his stepsisters, Tracy and Kelly; his girlfriend, Patty Hanten; his aunts and uncles, Sharon and Richard Aadalen, Eric Bethel, Alex Korah, Trevor and Margaret Ann Price; and his cousins, Drew, Kirk and Lora Aadalen; Trevor, Elizabeth, Meghan and Sara Price; and Eric Bethel Jr.

A celebration of Earl's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at Phillips Church in Exeter. In lieu of flowers, please send a contribution to the family, which will be used to establish a fund in Earl's name to benefit those with diabetes.

Raymond A. Rivers

YORK - Raymond A. Rivers, 80, of Philbrick Road, Kittery, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Nov. 15, 1919, in Andover, N.H., he was the son of John and Gertrude (Holt) Rivers, and attended schools there. He also attended the University of New Hampshire.

He worked for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1940 until his retirement in 1974 as head of the training division. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting, fishing and golf.

He was the husband of Avis (Bray) Rivers, who died March 14, 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Dana L. Rivers and his wife, Carol, of Sterling Heights, Mich., and Gregory A. Rivers and his wife, Jacqueline, of Kittery Point; a brother, Robert W. Rivers of Kingsland, Texas; two grandsons, Anthony S. Rivers and his wife, Cheryl, of Kittery, and Jonathan E. Rivers of Kittery Point; and a granddaughter, Kari L. Rivers of Sterling Heights.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Madeline Rivers, Lyda Belle Sawtelle and Faye Calderera; and two brothers, John and Harry Rivers.

Ada H. Torrey

YORK - Ada H. Torrey, 91, formerly of Main Street, Eliot, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at The Harbor Home, York.

Born April 6, 1908, in Kittery, she was the daughter of Fred and Almeda (Tobey) Abrams, and was a graduate of R.W. Traip Academy.

She lived in Newburyport, Mass., for many years, moving to Eliot in the 1960s.

She was a devout follower of Mary Baker Eddy and her teachings of the Christian Science movement. In her younger years, she loved music, dancing, animals and nature. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

She was the wife of Malcolm Torrey.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Shirley Abrams of Kittery; two nieces, Barbara McQuinn of Bar Harbor, Maine and Carol Norton of Milton, N.H.; a nephew, James Abrams of Kittery; and several grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brother Charles Abrams and his wife, Elizabeth, previously of Eliot; a brother Fred Philip Abrams, previously of Kittery; and two nephews, Norman and Robert Abrams, both previously of Kittery.

Anna D. Omer

AURORA, Colo. - Anna D. Omer, 87, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, after a short period of illness. A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Frances Cabrini Church, Littleton, Co.

Born March 10, 1912, in Portsmouth, she attended St. Patrick's School, was a 1930 graduate of Portsmouth High School and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church.

She was a bank teller and retired from the Indian Head Bank in 1977, after 25 years of service. She was active in various community groups.

She was the wife of the late Helmer Omer. She moved to Virginia in 1977 and then to Colorado in 1981.

She is survived by her daughter, Helen Duran, son-in-law Vincent, and two grandchildren, Denise and Justin, all of Littleton; a sister-in-law, Irene Dooda of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth at 1 p.m. on May 13.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to St. Frances Cabrini Building Fund, 6673 W. Chatfield Ave., Littleton, CO 80128; or the National Shrine of St. Jude, Claretian Missionaries, 205 W. Monroe St., Chicago, IL 60606; or the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra, c/o the Rev. Louis Marucci, Diocese of Camden, 631 Market St., Camden, NJ 08102.

Phillis M. Annacone

HAMPTON - The funeral for Phillis M. Annacone, 91, of 23 Keene Lane, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. Daniel J. Sinibaldi, associate pastor, was the celebrant. Patricia Mackensen was the soloist and Nelson K. Ward was the organist. Acolytes were Rodolphe Begin, Gerald Soucy and William Pray. The readings and words of remembrance were offered by Sister Theresa Malouin, C.S.C. The gifts were presented to the altar by Lauren Wylie and Dan Brigandi. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with committal service conducted by the Rev. Sinibaldi. Pallbearers were Paul Yeaton, Philip Smith, Matthew Smith and Dan Brigandi.

Rudolph W. Kowalski Jr.

KINGSTON - The funeral for Rudolph W. "Rudy" Kowalski Jr., 64, of Kingston, was held Saturday in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. Phil Cannistraci, pastor from East Putnam, Conn., officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by Jeff Diamond. The flag, which draped the casket, was presented to Mrs. Kowalski by Fenton Phelan, chaplain of the Kingston Veteran's Club. Private burial will be in the Quasett Cemetery, Woodstock, Conn. An honor guard was posted at the funeral home by members of the Kingston Veteran's Club.

Normand A. Larrivee

PORTSMOUTH - Normand A. Larrivee, 66, of 649 State St., died at home Sunday, March 19, 2000, after a brief period of illness.

Born May 4, 1933, in Laconia, he was the son of Phillippe and Marie (Simoneau) Larrivee. He moved to Portsmouth in 1942. He was a graduate of St. Patrick School and a 1951 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

He served in the Navy for nine years and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was retired, having worked for many years for attorney L.L. Hanson.

A member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, he was also a Eucharistic minister there. He was a notary public and justice of the peace, a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 140, St. Mary Assembly Fourth Degree, and a friend of Bill W.

Survivors include a sister, Blanche Larrivee of Portsmouth; three nephews, Mark Larrivee, Edgar Larrivee and Peter Windmuller; a niece, Maria Westgate and her husband, Mark; an aunt; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edgar Larrivee, who died in 1999.
