Bruce E. Walker

RYE - Fire Chief Bruce E. Walker, 53, of 613 Washington Road, Rye, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

A lifelong Rye resident, he was born in Exeter, Nov. 16, 1946, the son of Earl C. and Barbara E. (Belcher) Walker.

He first joined the Rye Fire Department as a call firefighter in 1964. He became a permanent firefighter in 1972 and rose to the rank of chief in 1996. He was also the forest fire warden for the town of Rye.

He served as a member of the NH Air National Guard at Pease during the mid-1960s. He currently served as president of the Seacoast Chief Fire Officer Association and was a member of the New Hampshire Fire Chiefs Association; the New England Fire Chiefs Association; and the Interstate Emergency Unit.

He was a member of the Rye Lions Club.

A 1964 graduate of Portsmouth High School, he was a 1967 graduate of New Hampshire Technical College and received his degree in fire science in 1986.

He was the husband of Margaret A. (LeBlanc) Walker of Rye for 33 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Rita Lazar and her husband, Keith Nielsen of Rye, Christine Walker and her fiance, Robert Ross of Epsom, Sarah Walker and her fiance, Tom Sullivan of Rye, and Jenny Walker of Rye; two grandchildren, Emma Walker and Haille Nielsen; a sister, Susan Blaisdell of Rye; and two nieces and a nephew.

Francis C. Woods

EPPING - Largely attended services were held Wednesday morning from the Brewitt Funeral Home for Francis Clifford Woods, 81, of 77 South St., who died Thursday, March 9, 2000, in California.

The Rev. Wayne VanGundy, pastor of the Epping Community Church, officiated. His nephew, Edward Scully of Portsmouth, gave the eulogy and remembrances.

Included in the attendance were classmates and friends and neighbors from Epping and Portsmouth.

Burial followed at Prospect Cemetery, where Rev. VanGudy gave committal prayers. The bearers were Richard Marcotte, Timothy, Edward, James and Chris Scully, and Jay Damren.

Honorary bearers were Justin Scully, Jordan Garneau and David Garneau.

Corrine Brooks

BETHESDA, Md. - Corinne Brooks, 84, wife of the late James T. Brooks, died peacefully at the Manor Care Health Services Nursing Home in Bethesda on Wednesday, March 8, 2000.

She was born May 27, 1915, in Pocatello, Idaho, where she attended public schools and graduated with honors from high school. She attended the University of Idaho and Oregon State, majoring in drama and English. She moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1945, working at the Army Medical Department for 30 years.

She and her husband were active members of the Naomi Chapter No. 23, Order of the Eastern Star, where she was matron for three terms. They spent their summers in Eliot, Maine, after retirement.

Brina Williams

WOBURN, Mass. - Brina Williams, 94, crossed over to be with her late husband, Lester, on Thursday, March 16, 2000. She had resided at the Sunbridge of Wilmington Nursing Care Center for the past two years.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Linn of Woburn, Mass., and Barbara Leland and her husband, Marshall, both of Kittery; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one niece and one nephew.

Linnea S. Silver

BOSCAWEN, N.H. - Linnea Staples Silver (Stadig), 86, noted feature reporter, free-lance writer and author, died at Franklin Hospital on Wednesday, March 15, 2000, after a series of cardiac complications.

Born in West Jemtland section of New Sweden, Maine, on May 11, 1913, she was the daughter of Albert N. Stadig and Gertrude W. (Vik) Stadig.

At an early age, she became a free-lance writer, contributing to various magazines and newspapers. While living in Colebrook, N.H., she was a news contributor to the Manchester Union Leader. In 1957-58, she was a reporter-photographer for the Rochester Courier and also did a York County special for the Sanford Tribune in Maine. In 1959, she became a reporter-photographer and feature writer with the New Hampshire Sunday News and moved with her family to Candia, N.H. She specialized in outdoor and environmental subjects and subsequently became environmental editor for the newspaper. She also frequently covered special stories for the Union Leader. Known then as Linnea Staples, she traveled extensively throughout the state and wrote about a great number of subjects, including various Army Corps of Engineers projects, playing a major role in defeating the proposed Corps' Pontook Dam on the Androscoggin River and another proposal to dam Indian Stream in Pittsburg, N.H.

In 1965, she was named to receive the governor's "Outstanding Outdoor Writer" award. She also received various feature story and feature photograph awards over the years. Since 1968, she has been listed in "Who's Who of American Women."

She retired from the Sunday News and Union Leader staff in 1971. That year, she married Walter Theo Silver, noted New Hampshire wildlife biologist and historian. She continued her writing career as editor for the New Hampshire Outdoor Magazine, and contributed to several other magazines on a free-lance basis. Mr. and Mrs. Silver were working on a book at the time of his death in 1995. Mrs. Silver continued the work on the book, publishing From the King's Plantation to Hometown Heritage, a history of Boscawen and Webster, in 1997, with Peter Randall publishers.

Mrs. Silver was very active in many organizations. She was a member of the Boscawen Congregational Church, the Boscawen Historical Society, the New Hampshire Archeological Society, the Kittery Naval and Historical Society, and was a former member of the Outdoor Writers' Association of America, the New England Outdoor Writers' Association, and the Gun Collectors of New Hampshire, of which she was the first woman member. Before her death, she made important archival donations to the New Hampshire State Archives and the Boscawen Historical Society.

She was the wife of the late Walter T. Silver.

Survivors include four sons, Nathan L. Silver of Island Falls, Maine, John A. Staples of Ocala, Fla., Rolf R. Staples of Ocala, Fla., and Calvin L. Staples of San Antonio; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Glidden of Dover, N.H.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one son, Karl L. Staples of Dover, N.H.

Charles F. Dunn

KITTERY - Charles F. Dunn, 72, of 143 Rogers Road, Kittery, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born on Dec. 2, 1927, in Lewiston, Maine, he was the son of Charles W. and Winifred G. (Fox) Dunn. He was a 1946 graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine.

He served in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic and small arms instructor for 20 years. He served in World War II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War, retiring in 1967 as a technical sergeant. For the past 36 years he was well-known in the area as a clock and watch repairman. He had operated Dunn's Watch & Clock Repair in Kittery for 13 years.

He had formerly resided in Cape Neddick and York Beach. He enjoyed boats and working on automobiles.

He was the husband of Shirley G. (Parker) Dunn of Kittery for 46 years.

In addition to his wife, his is survived by two sons, Charles F. Dunn Jr. and his wife, Wendi, of Dover; William G. Dunn and his wife, Linda, of York Beach; two daughters, Mrs. Gregory (Sherry A.) Beal of York, and Mrs. Raymond (Debra L.) LeGros of Gaeta, Italy; seven grandchildren, Lindsay, Derek, Kyle and Kayla Dunn of York Beach, and Kathleen, Nathaniel and Joshua LeGros of Gaeta, Italy; and one cousin, Jeanie Mason of Kennebunk.

Florence M. Devine

BRADFORD, Mass. - Florence May Devine, 85, formerly of 51 South Webster St., Bradford, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Harborside Healthcare in Amesbury, Mass.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Margaret M. (Murphy) Devine, and sister of the late Rose M. Lavery and Edward F. Devine.

She was born in Haverhill, Mass., May 7, 1914, educated at St. James School and was a resident of Haverhill for more than 50 years. She was employed at Gilchrist's in Boston for many years and returned to Haverhill in the early 1960s, working for the former Mitchell's Department Store in downtown Haverhill as a sales clerk.

She was a member of Sacred Hearts Church in Bradford, the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, the Legion of Mary, and Missionary Rose Bushes of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in Manchester.

She is survived by several nieces, closest to her being Mrs. James (Joan) Street of Eliot, Mrs. Thomas (Carol) McCabe of Portsmouth, Miss Patricia A. Lavery of Portsmouth, and Mrs. Debra Bither of Sanford.

J. Robert Curran

EXETER - J. Robert "Bob" Curran Jr., 65, of 12 Jady Hill Ave., Exeter, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Oct. 20, 1934, in South Berwick, he was the son of Joseph R. and Ilene (Kenney) Curran Sr.

He was a lifelong resident of Exeter and was a graduate of Exeter High School. He attended McIntosh College in Dover. He worked for the Exeter-Hampton Electric Company as a plant manager for 40 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Exeter brass band for many years, currently serving as the manager as his father had before him.

After retiring, he volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program, Exeter Healthcare Inc., and the Exeter Recreation Department. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church, a member of the St. Michael's Parish Council, the Michael House, and the St. Vincent dePaul Society. He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Exeter Council No. 2179. He served as treasurer of the Boy Scout Troop 323, and was a commissioner of the Exeter Housing Authority.

He was the husband of Irene G. (Belliveau) Curran of Exeter of 28 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Sean M. Curran of Portsmouth and Daniel J. Curran of Exeter; two daughters, Maureen E. Cloutier and her husband, Fern L., of Lewiston, Maine, and Megan A. Curran of Exeter; and several cousins, aunts and uncles.

Charles F. Dunn

KITTERY - Charles F. Dunn, 72, of 143 Rogers Road, Kittery, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at York Hospital.

Melvin V. Hilton

PHOENIX - Melvin V. Hilton, 66, formerly of Melody Lane, Keene, N.H., died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix.

Born in Keene, Nov. 3, 1933, he was the son of Albert and Myrtle (Bryant) Hilton. He graduated from Keene High School and lived there until moving to Phoenix about 10 years ago. He was an Air Force veteran.

He was employed many years at Kingsbury Corp. and at MPB Corp. before that. He had been an active member of the Keene Lodge of Elks, the Gordon-Bissell American Legion Post No. 4, and the Masons. He was an avid sports and baseball fan.

Survivors include a son, Albert Hilton of Keene; four daughters, Karen Bettencourt of Portsmouth, Deborah Hilton of Peoria, Ariz., Patricia Harris of Brattleboro and Pamela Hondros of Nashua; a brother, Albert Hilton of Keene; five sisters, Bernice Derby of Export, Pa., Shirley Ecklund of Long Beach, Calif., Myrtle Morin of Unionville, Conn., Beverly Frink of Keene and Jeanie Hilton of Phoenix; 10 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Ruth Nash

PORTSMOUTH - Ruth Nash, 82, of 928 South St., died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born Feb. 20, 1918, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Edward and Margaret (Taylor) Nash. She was a 1938 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

She was formerly employed as a nurses' aide at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, and for 25 years, worked with the Salvation Army.

Survivors include great-nieces and nephews.

Avis B. Rivers

PORTSMOUTH - Avis B. Rivers, 73, of Philbrick Road, Kittery, wife of Raymond A. Rivers, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at The Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 12, 1926, in York, she was a daughter of Wilton P. and Albertina D. (Demeritt) Bray. She was a graduate of R.W. Traip Academy.

She was very active in the Kittery Democratic Party, having acted as the treasurer in the past. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Dana L. Rivers and his wife, Carol, of Sterling Heights, Mich.; and Gregory A. Rivers and his wife, Jacqueline, of Kittery Point; a sister, Inez Moores, of Everett, Mass.; grandsons, Anthony S. Rivers, and his wife Cheryl, of Kittery, Jonathan E. Rivers, of Kittery Point; and a granddaughter, Kari L. Rivers, of Sterling Heights, Mich.

She was predeceased by a sister, Velma Moores.

Ethel M. Reynolds

ROCHESTER - Ethel M. Reynolds, 79, of 24 Lafayette St., died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at the Sunbridge Health Care and Rehabilitation.

Born June 2, 1920, in Dover, she was the daughter of Guy and Flora (Shattuck) Hayes.

She is a lifelong resident of Rochester. She enjoyed bingo and handcrafts.

She was the wife of the late William "Bill" Reynolds.

Survivors include her daughters Gladys Baker of Haverhill, Mass., Patricia Boisvert and Mildred Osborne of Rochester; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; her sisters, Leona Wood of Dover and Marion Kuse of Amesbury, Mass.; nieces and nephews. Also her friend and homemaker, Bea McDowel.

She is predeceased by her husband, William "Bill" Reynolds, and a brother Richard Hayes.
