Mary E. Larkin

KITTERY - Mary E. Larkin, 89, of Kittery, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000.

She was born June 30, 1910, in Union, Conn.

She spent her latter years at Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery, where she made lots of friends and was very well taken care of.

She was the wife of the late Horace G. Larkin.

Survivors include her son, John R. Larkin and his wife, Ruth, of Glenshaw, Pa.; her daughter-in-law, Ann Larkin; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, Willima H. Larkin; four brothers; a sister and granddaughter.

She will be buried in the family plot in Eastford, Conn.

Jonathan Brann

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Funeral services for Jonathan Israel Brann, 27, of 2225 Greenridge Road, were held at Temple Israel, in Portsmouth, Tuesday. Rabbi Mark Finkel, of Beth Abraham Temple in Nashua, officiated.

Words of remembrance were given by his fiancee, Rebecca Neel; brother-in-law, Didier Jardin; John Strickland, Jim McPherson, Darren Sarno, and Jennifer Couch.

In attendance were members of Temple Israel.

Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rabbi Finkel.

Bearers were John Strickland, Jim McPherson, Bill Boies, Mike Stinchfield, John Kadish, and Peter Daniels.

Levi H. Barker

STRATHAM - The funeral for Levi H. Barker, 87, of Stratham, was held Wednesday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. Services were held in the Stratham Community Church. The Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine, pastor, officiated. Sally Wool was the organist. Spring burial will be in Harmony Hill Cemetery, Stratham.

Estelle P. Amoruso

NEEDHAM, Mass. - Estelle P. (Pepin) Amoruso, 67, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Deaconess-Glover Hospital in Needham.

Born in Portsmouth, she was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, and received her master's degree from Boston College. She was a resident of Needham, Mass., since 1981.

She began her career in education as a school teacher, and later was an employee for many years with the 3M Co. of Needham, from which she retired.

She was the wife of A. Paul Amoruso.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her children, Nancy A. Anctil and her husband, Paul, of Manchester, N.H., and Kenneth P. Amoruso of Cincinnati; five sisters, Patricia Perry of Marblehead, Mass., Carol Moore, Paula Aubertine and Colleen Franzoso, all of Portsmouth, Colette Palmer of Salem, Mass.; a brother, Michael Pepin of Braintree, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Ashley Anctil of Manchester, N.H.

Demetra G. Vatistas

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Demetra G. "Dee" (Grimbilas) Vatistas, 78, of 332 Hanover St., were held from Buckminster Chapel, yesterday, with services at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth.

The Rev. Fr. Angelo Pappas, presbyter, officiated. Readings were given by Jim Genimatas. Mrs. Vatistas' son, Peter Vatistas, gave words of remembrance and ushers were Gus Zoulamis and Jim Genimatas.

In attendance were members of the church.

Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, in the spring.

Bearers were Dino Houliares, Gregory Vatistas III, Chris Grimbilas, Nick Grimbilas, Thomas Johnson and James Hanson.

Wake services were held at the funeral home, Monday evening by Fr. Pappas.

Beatrice M. Cournoyer

PORTSMOUTH - Beatrice M. (Adam) Cournoyer, 85, of 135 Ocean Road, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at her home.

Born in St. Barthelmie, Canada, on June 21, 1914, she was the daughter of Azarie and Alphonsine (Chapelaine) Adam.

She was formerly employed as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua.

She was a communicant of St. James Church in Portsmouth.

She had resided in Florida for several years until moving back to Portsmouth in 1997.

She was the wife of the late Edward Cournoyer.

Survivors include a daughter, Pauline M. Dowd of Portsmouth; two brothers, John Adam of Upton, Mass., and Fernand Adam of Northbridge, Mass.; six grandchildren, Cheryl Fournier of Portsmouth, Robert Dowd Jr. of Mesa, Ariz, Maureen Smith of Barrington, Loria Crosby of Portsmouth, Lisa Schlieper of Portsmouth, and Michael Dowd of Portsmouth; eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Cornelius W. Vandenbergh

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - The Rev. Cornelius W. Vandenbergh, 95, of Hilltop House, Brattleboro, Vt., died peacefully Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Linden Lodge Nursing Home in Brattleboro.

Born Oct. 26, 1904, in Rochester, N.Y., he was the son of Jacob and Mary (Pieters) Vandenbergh. He attended Calvin College from 1922 to 1924 and received a bachelor's degree from Colgate University in 1928. In 1930, he was ordained and received the bachelor of divinity degree from Colgate-Rochester Divinity School.

He served the Warren Baptist Church in Jordanville, N.Y., the Baptist churches of Painted Post and Cooper's Plains, N.Y. from 1934 to 1943, the First Baptist Church of Cortland, N.Y. from 1943 to 1951, the First Baptist Church of Brattleboro and the West Dummerston, Vt. Baptist Church from 1951 to 1961, and the Middle Street Baptist Church of Portsmouth, from 1961 to 1970.

Upon his retirement, the Vandenberghs moved to Exeter, where he served as pastor of the Newfields Community Church on a part-time basis from 1970 to 1976. When the Vandenberghs returned to Brattleboro, he did interim and pulpit supply work in the area for several years.

He was a musician who played the piano and organ and composed songs, both religious and romantic. He was also a published writer, many of his verses and poems appearing in print. During retirement he wrote two books, "Sunbursts For The Spirit," and "Let The Bells Ring!"

He was an ardent baseball fan and enjoyed playing chess.

In January of 1986, he entered the Hilltop House Retirement Home in Brattleboro.

On June 18, 1929, he married the former Winifred M. Richardson of Fort Plains, N.Y., who survives.

IN addition to his wife of 70 years, he leaves three daughters, Phyllis V. Shaudys of Washing Crossing, Pa., Anita Perry of Springfield, Mass., and Faith Stone of Framingham, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Harriet M. Earle

YORK - Harriet M. Earle, 85, of 23R Barrell Lane, York, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Harbor Home.

Born on May 4, 1914, in Athens, Maine, she was the daughter of Lucius and Nina Tuscan. She was a 1932 graduate of York High School.

She was a member of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach, a member of the Fadette Chapter of Eastern Star and enjoyed knitting. She had summered at the family camp on Bauneg Beg Lake for 37 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Raymond W. "Niffy" Earle of York.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Richard N. Earle of Hollis, Arlen R. Earle of York, and Robert W. Earle of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Carolyn Reilly of York; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter.

Zelma Clark

SACO - Mrs. Zelma Clark, 84, of 48E Free St., died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, following a lengthy period of illness.

Born in Dexter, Maine, she was the daughter of William and Angelena (Poulin) Conway. She was a resident of Saco for most of her life.

She was a bank teller at Saco & Biddeford Savings Institute until her retirement in 1980. She was also the assistant treasurer and board member of the Wardwell since 1976.

She was the wife of the late Paul Clark, who died in 1977.

Survivors include a daughter, Meredith and son-in-law, Maurice Gendron, of Merrimack; grandchildren Michelle Noyes of Hancock, and Marc Gendron of Nashua; great-grandchildren, Madison and Carly Noyes of Hancock; and her sister, Marjorie C. Carder of Kittery.

Hartley N. Tobey

KITTERY POINT - Hartley N. Tobey, 85, of Brave Boat Harbor Road, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 22, 1914 in York, he was the son of Warren and Edith (Bridges) Tobey and attended local schools.

He was retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard outside Machine Shop No. 38. He was also a carpenter.

He was the husband of Mabel L. (Wentworth) Tobey,

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Norman Tobey and his wife, Connie, of South Berwick; two daughters, Joyce Tobey of Kittery, and Carol Souriolle and her husband, Raymond, of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Clifford, Chester and Raymond Tobey, and a sister, Dorothy Trask.

Elizabeth Caldwell

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Elizabeth (Richards) Caldwell died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, after a lengthy illness. She was buried in Del Rio, Tenn., at Clark Cemetery

Born March 1, 1924, she was the daughter of Maurice and Helen (Durgin) Richards. She was raised on Union Street in Portsmouth. She graduated from Portsmouth High School and worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during and after World War II.

She was the wife of John R. Caldwell of Corpus Christi, and Del Rio, Tenn.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her son, Robert H. Caldwell of Corpus Christi; her daughter, Helen A. Gillespie of Richmond, Va.; her son, William P. Caldwell II of Portland, Texas; her son, Bartley O. Caldwell of Corpus Christi; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her brother, John O. Richards of Laconia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Mary (Richards) Shattuck and her brother, Charles H. Richards.

Jonathan I. Brann

N. CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jonathan Israel Brann, 27, of 2225 Greenridge Road, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000. Funeral services will be held at Temple Israel, 200 State St., Portsmouth, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Friends invited. No visiting hours. A memorial week will be observed at the home of his mother, Mrs. Marsha Brann, 26 Woodknoll Drive, North Hampton. Donations in his memory may be made to Dream Peace, or to the Lupus Foundation of New Hampshire, 18 Herrick St., Merrimack, NH 03054, or to Temple Israel. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Jonathan I. Brann

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Mr. Jonathan Israel Brann, 27, of 2225 Greenridge Road, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000.

Born April 3, 1972, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Marsha (Shane) Brann of North Hampton, and the late Robert E. Brann.

He attended Saltus Grammar School in Bermuda and was a 1990 graduate of Winnacunnet High School in Hampton. He attended Plymouth State College, the University of Colorado, and the University of New Hampshire.

He was regional manager for Eastern Communications Co., and had attended Temple Israel in Portsmouth.

In addition to his mother, survivors include a sister, Heidi Jardin of Chicago; maternal grandmother, Lillian Shane of Bangor; paternal grandparents, Wilfred and Helene Brann of Randolph, Maine; his fiance, Rebecca Neel of North Charleston, S.C.; and aunts, uncles, two nieces and several cousins.

James F. Cornwall

EXETER - The funeral for James F. Cornwall, 71, of 50 Brookside Drive, was held Saturday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Exeter. The Rev. John Mazzei, associate pastor, was the celebrant. Denise Kelly was the organist and John Kelly was the soloist. Acoloytes were Joseph Latour and Ray Russell. The readings were offered by Timothy Johns and Kristen Cornwall. The gifts were presented to the altar by Ariel Brouillet and Clare Wynne. A poem was read by Mr. Cornwall's daughters, Mary Margaret Howard, Therese Cornwall Lospennato and Joanne Conley-Small. Burial followed in Exeter Cemetery, with the Rite of Committal by the Rev. Mazzei.

George E. Hardy

SEABROOK - George E. Hardy, 65, of 2 Woodland Ave., died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Salisbury, Mass.

Born Sept. 1, 1934, in Sussex, England, the son of the late George and Lillian (Soan) Hardy.

In 1963, he moved to the United States and worked as a machinist at the former Bailey Corp. for a number of years and in area machine shops.

He enjoyed lobstering, clamming and woodworking. He was a former member of the B.P.O.E of Newburyport.

He was the husband of Sally A. (Dusombre) Hardy for 26 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Paul Hardy of Seabrook, and Robert Hardy of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Ann Broad of England; three grandchildren; five brothers, Graham, Groffery, Gary, Godfrey, and Bunk Hardy, all of England; five sisters, Gillian Sullivan of Arizona, and Gwen Sherwood, Geraldine Goodsell, Gennie Hardy, all of England, and Gloria Jarrett of Spain; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Hardy.
