Andrew G. Drakides

HAMPTON FALLS - Andrew G. Drakides, 75, of Brown Road, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Sunbridge of Rochester.

Born Nov. 30, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth (Bramas) Drakides. He had resided in Hampton Falls for the past 45 years.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Pacific with the Navy's Amphibious Assault Fleet.

From 1954 until his retirement in 1986, he worked as a tool and die maker at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

For many years, he coached HYA baseball and basketball, and served as a member of both the Hampton Falls School Board and the Hampton Falls Volunteer Fire Department.

He also was a member of Hampton Falls Grange No. 171, the Emerson Hovey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 168 of Portsmouth, and the LST Sailor's Association.

He was the husband of the late Lillian M. (Cushing) Drakides, who died in 1979. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Robert C. Palleschi

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Robert C. Palleschi, 69, of Portsmouth, were held Sunday at Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. Timothy Rich, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Frank Pendergast, brother-in-law, gave words of remembrance.

In attendance were members of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Burial will be in Farrington Morton Cemetery, in Mexico, Maine, in the spring.

Pauline R. Littlefield

CAPE NEDDICK - Pauline R. Littlefield, 84, of 1144 U.S. Route 1, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at her residence.

Born July 1, 1915, in York, she was the daughter of Elden L. Helen (Nason) Randlett and attended York schools.

Mrs. Littlefield enjoyed cooking and cooked for various families in the York area. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Boardman-Ellis Post No. 6977 of York Beach.

She was the wife of the late Charles L. Littlefield, who died in 1949.

Survivors include four second cousins, Georgia Michaud of Cape Neddick, Elaine Curry of York, Kathleen Marrone of Carpentersville, Ill., and James L. Martin of Kittery.

Edmund A. Hanson

FRANKLIN, N.H. - Edmund A. Hanson, 84, of 29 Baldwin St., died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Lakes Region Hospital in Laconia, N.H.

Born Sept. 13, 1915, in Boston, he was the son of Alfred J. and Alice C. (Rosebeck) Hanson. He grew up in Needham, Mass., and graduated from Needham High School. He was a 1942 graduate of Boston University, with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

He resided for many years in Needham and then in Kittery. He was a resident of Franklin for the past year.

He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.

He owned and operated the Hanson Atlantic Service Station in Needham for more than 20 years.

He was a past member, and served in many administrative capacities, of the Carter Methodist Church in Needham.

He was the husband of Violet May (Freeton) Hanson for 52 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Judith A. Elley of Brooksville, Fla., Linda J. Andrew of Rumney, N.H., and Carol M. Zeeve of Vienna, Va.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Rena E. Lovett

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Rena E. (Priest) Lovett, 89, of 181 Brackett Road, Rye, were held at Buckminster Chapel on Saturday. Rev. Jeffrey Dietrich, pastor of Bethany Congregational Christian Church in Rye, officiated. Son-in-law Douglas Piper, granddaughters Bethany Bishop and Leah Sharrock, son Marc Horton and grandson Joshua Horton gave words of remembrance.

In attendance were members of Bethany Congregational Christian Church of Rye.

Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Rye, in the spring.

Anita C. Churchman

PORTSMOUTH - Anita C. Churchman, 88, formerly of Leslie Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at St. Ann Home in Dover after a lengthy period of failing health.

Born July 14, 1911, in Rochester, she was the daughter of Hormisdas and Josephine (Cyr) Bilodeau.

A registered nurse for more than 40 years, she won a fellowship for her bachelor of science degree in nursing from St. Louis University. She taught cadet nurses during World War II, and afterward did extensive work in the public health field.

For 12 years, she was the dispensary nurse at Pease Air Force Base.

Mrs. Churchman was an accomplished musician and played piano and violin in her youth.

She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church, and was a former member of the Women's Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Churchman of Portsmouth and Martha Jones of Dover; four grandchildren, Deborah, Danielle, Richard and Ryan Jones; two sisters, Frances Pace and Louise Fogarty, both of Dover.

Florence M. Sylvester

ELIOT - Florence M. Sylvester, 74, of 5 Kings Highway North, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at the Varney Crossing Nursing Home, North Berwick.

Born Feb. 19, 1925, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Ambrose and Marion (Cole) Penney, and attended schools in South Berwick, and Berwick Academy.

She had worked for more than 20 years for Colonial Cleaners in Portsmouth.

She enjoyed reading and listening to music.

She was the wife of James Sylvester for 50 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Donald Sylvester and his wife, Deborah, of Eliot; a daughter, Cynthia Cots, and her husband, George, of Portsmouth; two brothers, Ambrose Penney Jr. and his wife, Gail, of Rollinsford, N.H.; Robert Penney, and his wife, Betty, of Sanford, Maine; five sisters, Marie Cashman, and her husband, Vernon, of South Berwick; Virginia Michaud, and her husband, Oscar, of Rollinsford, N.H.; Marion Bedell of Shapleigh, Maine; Margaret Rogers, and her husband, Linn, of Goose Creek, S.C.; Patricia Littlefield, and her husband, Tom, of Shapleigh, Maine; a grandson, Chad Sylvester of Dover, N.H.; two granddaughters, Jamey Cots, of Portsmouth; Jenni Sylvester, of Eliot; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert C. Palleschi

PORTSMOUTH - After a long battle with cancer, Robert C. Palleschi, 69, of Portsmouth, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at his home.

Born Feb. 3, 1931 in Rumford, Maine, he was the son of the late Domenic and Wilhelmena Palleschi. He was a 1949 graduate of Stevens High School in Rumford, playing varsity baseball and football.

A longtime resident of Portsmouth, he was well-known in the community, and along with his partner, managed and operated the florist business "Flowers by Leslie," having opened the first shop on Nov. 20, 1961.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed music, spending time with his family and vacationing when time permitted. He was able to realize a lifelong dream this past fall, traveling to Italy with his sister, Theresa.

He had three dear friends, Francis Gotto, Bob Worthley and Bert Thereault, all of the Rumford area, as well as John Pantelakos of Dover.

He was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Caroline Dunkerton of Maine, Josephine Patenaude of Massachusetts and Theresa Pendergast of Connecticut; two brothers, Domenic of Rumford, and Donald of Winthrop of Maine; and several nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.

Linda M. Roche

TORRINGTON, Conn. - Linda M. Roche, 51, of 76 Starview Drive, died Friday, Feb. 11, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Born April 4, 1948, in Exeter, she was the daughter of Reginald and Viola (West) Chapman of Kingston. She has lived in Torrington since 1975.

She was a small-business owner for 12 years. She was an active member of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Torrington, serving as president of their Women's Club, a member of the choir, and a Eucharistic minister. She was a volunteer in Saint Francis school library, cafeteria and office. She was a member of the parish council and taught religious education for 12 years. She was a member of The Council of Catholic Women and the Democratic Women's Club, and Democratic Town Committee, having been elected for three terms as constable. She was a former Brownie and Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader and coach for the Steve Blass Baseball League. She was involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, she served on the mayor's committee for youth and she was active with The Warner Theater, formerly a member of the board of directors, and also a volunteer there. She sang with the Connecticut Yankee Chorale.

She was the wife of Joseph P. Roche.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by three sons, Joseph Roche of Exeter, Kevin Roche of Lake Mary, Fla., and Randy Roche and his wife, Elizabeth, of Weir, Kansas; a daughter, Karen Santasiere and her husband, Shawn of Woodstock, Conn. She also leaves a brother, Paul Chapman of Troy, Mich. and many special friends.

Carole A. Coombs

EXETER - Carole A. Coombs, 57, of 3 Spruce St., died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000 at Exeter Hospital.

Born Sept. 28, 1942 in Amesbury, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Millard and Mary E. (Dehaise) Fowler.

A homemaker and bookkeeper, she lived in Exeter most of her life and was a graduate of Exeter High School. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church.

She was the wife of David E. Coombs Sr. for 38 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, David E. Coombs Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, of Rochester; a daughter, Susan A. Bennett and her husband, Paul, of Exeter; three grandchildren, Joshua Bennett and Michael Bennett, both of Exeter; and Cameron Coombs of Rochester.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Fowler Sr.

Clarence D. Huntington

BARRE, Vt. - Clarence D. "Sandy" Huntington Jr., 44, of North Main Street, died at his home on Feb. 2, 2000.

Born Jan. 28, 1956, in Barre, he was the son of Clarence D. and Nadine (Patterson) Huntington Sr. He was a 1974 graduate of Spaulding High School.

He was a quarryman for the Rock of Ages Corp. He served in the Navy from 1975 to 1979.

He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Washington, Vt., fishing and the outdoors.

He was a member of the Quarryman's Union.

He was the husband of Maralyn Jacobs for 19 years. They were married on July 5, 1980 in Washington.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Karl Huntington; a daughter, Crystal Huntington; a brother, Lynn Huntington of Rochester; a sister, Kay Gagnon of Dover; a half-brother, Paul Farnham of Milton, Vt.; and a half-sister, Shirley Mullaly of Portsmouth.

He was predeceased by a half-sister, Amelda Vivian.

Francis M. Gacek

LOWELL, Mass. - Francis M. Gacek, 82, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2000, in Lowell General Hospital, following a brief period of illness.

Born Sept. 19, 1917, in Lowell, he was the son of the late Michael and Barbara (Hudzik) Gacek. He received his education in the St. Stanislaus School and was a graduate of Lowell High School. He went on to study and was a 1942 graduate of the Boston School of Anatomy and Embalming.

A highly-decorated and honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during World War II as a private in the Army Air Corps, seeing action overseas. Among his decorations he was the recipient of the Purple Heart for bravery above and beyond the call of duty.

A lifelong resident of the city of Lowell, he began his career in funeral service to the community with the Gacek Funeral Parlor, which he operated on Lakeview Avenue from 1943 to the early 1950s, when he relocated to Bridge Street and opened the Gacek Funeral Home. His three decades of success on Bridge Street ended in 1987 with the opening of the Dracut Funeral Home on Lakeview Avenue in Dracut, which is still successfully operated today by his son. He served the Lowell and Dracut communities proudly for over five decades.

He was one of the founders and first commander of the Polish American Veterans Club in Lowell. He held the position of commander for eight years. He was also a lifetime member of the Dom Polski Club in Lowell. He was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association as well as a member of the Massachusetts Funeral Directors Association. He was also a horseracing enthusiast and enjoyed time spent at the races.

He was a communicant of the Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity in Lowell.

He was the husband of the late Emilia "Millie" (Tebich) Gacek, who died in 1981.

Survivors include seven children and their spouses, Stephen F. and Jacqueline Gacek of Rye, Laurie and Paul Leclerk of Methuen, Mass., Shirley Stanley of Dracut, Mass., Eleanor and Thomas Hebert of Southbridge, Mass., Francis G. and Gisele Gacek of Pelham, N.H., Michael P. Gacek and Donna Podgur of Lowell, and Mark P. and Janet Gacek of Dracut; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Blanche Krystyniak of Nashua; a brother, Edward Gacek of Lowell; his dear friend and long-time companion, Josephine Biedron of Lowell; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Sr. Mary Henry Gacek and Stella Gacek; and four brothers, Joseph, John, Stanley and Walter Gacek.
