Francis H. Robb

PORTSMOUTH - Francis H. Robb, 84, of 405 South St., passed away at his home on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, after a short period of failing health.

Born in Baileyville, Maine, on June 27, 1915, he was the son of Edwin and Catherine (Robb) Robb.

A resident of Portsmouth since 1940, he served in the Army during World War II. He served in France and Germany with the 172nd Field Artillery Division where he received a battlefield promotion and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for more than 30 years, retiring as a supervisor of the safety department. After his retirement, he worked with OSHA for a short period of time.

He was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Knights of Columbus Council No. 140, and the Automotive Bowling League.

He was the husband of Mary (Twomey) Robb, for 49 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Catherine Jerszyk of Goffstown and Julia Tiebout of South Berwick; a son, Thomas Robb of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Emily and Meghan Jerszyk and Andrew and Timothy Tiebout; two sisters, Helen Haskins of Woodland, Maine, and Kathleen Splitz of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a brother-in-law John Twomey of Scituate, Mass; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters.

Lillian Roberts

PORTSMOUTH - Lillian Roberts, 82, of Elkins Park, Pa., died on Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, after a brief period of illness.

She is survived by a son, Sanford Roberts and daughter-in-law, Helaine, of Portsmouth; a daughter, Carol Gerson and son-in-law, Rabbi Gary Gerson, of River Forest, Ill.; four grandchildren, Adam Roberts, Jordana Gerson, Alexandra Roberts and Jessica Gerson; one sister, Henrietta Lieber of Philadelphia; and a brother, Milton Becket of Malvern, Pa.

Matthew J. Murtha

YORK - Matthew J. Murtha, 87, formerly of Georgianna Way, York, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000 at Harbor Home, after a long period of illness.

Born on Oct. 24, 1912, in Boston, he was the son of Matthew J. Sr., and Magdalene (O'Neill) Murtha. He was a 1930 graduate of Winthrop (Mass.) High School and a graduate of Bentley School of Accounting of Cambridge, Mass.

He had worked for Sylvania Corporation in Pennsylvania during World War II. He was vice-president of Sanborn Company, a medical equipment company of Cambridge and Waltham, Mass., from 1945 to 1965. He then became vice-president and treasurer of W.H. Nichols Company of Waltham, Mass., from 1967 to 1978.

He had served on the board of directors of the Newton-Waltham BayBank and was a Bentley College trustee for many years. He was treasurer of Waltham Hospital and served as president of the Cambridge Community Center.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. He had been a member of the Rotary Clubs of Waltham, Mass. and Ogunquit and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He served on the Town of York Housing Committee and was a volunteer for the York Commons residents. He was also president and co-founder of the former Mt. Agamenticus Ski Area.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elinor (Thayer) Murtha, who died in 1981.

Survivors include two sons, Edward R. Murtha of York, and John D. Murtha and his wife, Maureen, of Bermuda; a daughter, Mrs. Ron (Jean) Collotta of Scottsdale, Arizona; a sister, Rita Myrick of Ellenton, Fla.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Patricia A. Scalera

HAMPTON - Patricia A. Scalera, 53, of 23 Driftwood Road, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Born Sept. 19, 1946, in Fall River, Mass., she was the daughter of John and Julia (Sousa) Sousa of Bristol, R.I. She was a 1964 graduate of Bristol High School and 1968 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, with a degree in elementary education.

She taught school for a short time before raising her family. She resided here since 1979, coming from North Attleboro, Mass.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

She was the wife of Stephen E. Scalera of Hampton for 30 years.

In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include three sons, Stephen M. Scalera and his wife, Julie, of Amherst, Kevin R. Scalera of Mountain View, Calif., and Jonathan E. Scalera of Hampton; a granddaughter, Madison; two sisters, Elizabeth Tobiasz of Seekonk, Mass., and Kathleen Lewis of Bristol, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara A. Bibbins

EAST KINGSTON - Barbara A. Bibbins, 50, of East Kingston, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long battle with breast cancer.

Born Jan. 23, 1950, in Grand Junction, Colo., she was the daughter of Thelma R. (Wold) Perryman of Torrington, Wyo., and the late P. Chandler Perryman. She was raised in Torrington, Wyo., a farming community in eastern Wyoming.

She attended Torrington High School, receiving scholarships to Eastern Wyoming College and Brigham Young University, where she graduated and became accredited as an elementary and special education teacher.

It was at Brigham Young University that she met and married her husband of 28 years, Gordon W. Bibbins. They lived in many places in the Southeast and West before moving to East Kingston in 1985.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she was a teacher and leader in the youth Sunday School, the young women's program and the local and regional Women's Relief Society of the church.

She, along with her husband, daughter and son-in-law are members of the East Kingston Firemen's Association. In her youth, she was active in the Future Homemakers of America and Future Teachers of America.

Barbara loved her responsibility as a homemaker and took great enjoyment teaching her daughter, Amy.

In addition to her mother and her husband, survivors include a daughter, Amy E. Edwards and her husband, Melvin M., of Exeter; a sister, Dawna R. Lott of Soda Springs, Idaho,; and a brother, Thomas Perryman of Boise, Idaho.

David J. Hegarty

RYE BEACH - David J. Hegarty, 73, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare, after a lengthy period of illness.

Born April 4, 1926, in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of the late McDermott and Ella (Freeley) Hegarty.

He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy and a 1951 graduate of Canisuis College in Buffalo, N.Y.

His entire 35-year career was with Coca-Cola USA, retiring in 1986 as a regional manager of sales and marketing and zone accounts executive.

He had been a summer resident of Rye Beach for many years before moving here from Sudbury, Mass., in 1975. He was a communicant of Saint Theresa Church.

He was the husband of Gloria (Caldarone) Hegarty for nearly 50 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, David J. Hegarty Jr. of Hampton; two daughters, Laura E. Cannon and her husband, John, of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and Linda A. Hegarty of Rye Beach; two grandchildren, Eric Cannon and Victoria E. Cannon; a brother, John A. Hegarty of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, James, and a sister, Mary Frances Hegarty.

Christopher B. Sparks

PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended funeral services for Christopher Brian "Slim" Sparks, 29, of 419 Southwest Pine Island Road, Cape Coral, Fla., were held Friday at the Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. Msgr. Lawrence Burns, pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Church, officiated.

Memorial services will be held in Punta Gorda, Fla. at a later date.

Douglas W. Heath

HAMPTON - Douglas W. Heath, 59, also of Bucksport, Maine, and Corpus Christi, Texas, died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Spohn Hospital South in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Born Aug. 9, 1940, in Bucksport, Maine, he was the son of the late Carl Heath and Edith Heath Chambers.

He was a 1959 graduate of Winnacunnet High School in Hampton and served in the Army until 1965. He then worked for St. Regis Paper Co. in Bucksport for eight years before moving to Texas, where he became a traffic controller at Port Authority of Corpus Christi for 20 years.

He was a member of the Anah Shrine Temple of Bangor, Maine, and the Felicity Lodge No. 19 of Bucksport.

Survivors include a sister, Priscilla Metcalf and her husband, Stanley, of Bucksport, Maine; one brother, Adelbert Heath and his wife, Ann, of Vero Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

Mary P. MacDonald

TUSTIN, Calif. - Mary Patricia MacDonald, 78, of 2281 Caper Tree Drive, died at her home Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, of lung cancer.

Born July 21, 1921, in Concord, N.H., she was the daughter of Wallace and Ellen (Hoban) Purrington. She was a graduate of St. John High School, the Rochester School of Dental Hygiene in Rochester, N.Y., and the Fay Secretarial School in Boston.

She attended Santa Anna College and California State University in Fullerton, where she received her bachelor's degree in religious studies. She was employed as director of religious education from 1984 to 1989. She was a volunteer with F.I.S.H., the Red Cross, in Bible studies, as a Pink Lady, English as a second language, and for the church as a CCD teacher, lector and eucharistic minister. Her words to live by were "Let go, let God."

She served as a WAC during World War II, and was employed as a dental assistant and later as a dental hygienist from 1937 to 1974.

She moved to California after the death of her husband, Paul MacDonald, in 1974.

Survivors include two sons, James J. MacDonald of Baltimore, Md., and Michael P. MacDonald of Tustin, Calif, with whom she resided; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Scot, Ian, Brad, Meghan, Elizabeth, Dillon, and Troy; one brother, Carl Purrington of Augusta, Ga.

She was predeceased by a brother, the Rev. Robert Purrington.

Memorials may be made to the Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation, 4410 19th St., N.W., Rochester, MN 55901-6624.

Beatrice D. Lang

NEWMARKET - Beatrice "Tiny" D. Lang, 72, formerly of Newmarket, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood.

Born Jan. 12, 1928, in Exeter, she was the daughter of Charles W. Lang Sr. and Dorothy (Reynolds) Lang.

Survivors include her mother, of Newmarket; four brothers, Charles W. Lang Jr., Theodore M. Lang, and Gilbert L. Lang, all of Newmarket, and David E. Lang of Exeter; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Beaulieu and Mrs. Bruce (Patsy Jean) Hawkins, both of Newmarket; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert J. Bennett

PORTSMOUTH - Robert J. Bennett, 86, the widower of Mary Jean (Rice) Bennett, 245 Middle St., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born Oct. 6, 1913, in Pontiac, Mich., he was the son of Roy J. and Ida (Farley) Bennett.

He was the proprietor of Bob's Market, formerly of Davison, Mich.

Survivors include a son, Richard A. Bennett and his wife, Bernadette Curran, of Epping; a daughter, Lisa M. Bennett-D'Amico and her husband, Phillip, of Wilmington, Mass; two grandchildren, Robert C. Bennett and Vanessa A. Bennett, both of Epping; four siblings, Donald Bennett of Epping, Jack Bennett of Traverse City, Mich., Fred Bennett of Florida, and Maxine Bennett of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph E. Daneault

HAMPTON - Joseph E. Daneault, 96, widower of Marie A. (Oullette) Daneault, of 22 Tuck Road, and formerly of Portsmouth, and Edgewater, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.

Born in Concord on July 25, 1903, the son of Treffle and Alexina (Thibeault) Daneault.

Prior to his retirement, he wasw employed as a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth.

Survivors include a son, Edmund Daneault of Portsmouth; two daughters, Doris LaBerge of Portsmouth and Edgewater, Fla., and Rose Marshall of Barrington and Edgewater, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jerome B. Hyatt Sr.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Funeral services for Jerome B. Hyatt Sr., 88, of 201 Tam O'Shanter Blvd., were held at the Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth yesterday.

The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, of Greenland Community Congregational Church in Greenland officiated.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Greenland this spring.
