Beatrice M. Donnell

YORK HARBOR - Beatrice M. Donnell, 93, of York Street, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2000, at the York Harbor Nursing Home.

Born on Dec. 5, 1906, in Scotland, the daughter of James and Susan (McDaid) McKay and attended schools in Ireland.

She moved to the United States at the age of 20 and had lived in Philadelphia for several years and Boston for many years, before moving to York Harbor.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher-By-The-Sea Church and was an avid reader.

She is survived by one daughter, Susan and her husband Thomas Bucknam of York Harbor.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward M. Donnell, who died in 1955.

Private funeral services were held Tuesday in St. Christopher Church, York St., York. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth,. Memorial donations may be made either to St. Christopher Church, PO Box 1225, York Harbor, ME 03911, or to the Harbor Home Activity Fund, PO Box 60, York Harbor, ME 03911.

Jerome B. Hyatt, Sr.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Jerome B. Hyatt Sr., 88, the husband of Katherine E. Hyatt, of 201 Tam O'Shanter Blvd., died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000.

Born in Missouri on Dec. 8, 1911, he was the son of Henry F. and Sarah (Brookshire) Hyatt. Before his retirement, he was employed as an office manager for the United States government.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years.

Other survivors include two sons, Jerome B. Hyatt Jr. of Williamsburg, Va. and James P. Hyatt of Rye, N.H.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Robert E. Ackerman

YORK BEACH - Robert E. Ackerman, 75, of 12 Talpey Ave., died suddenly Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born on Jan. 23, 1925, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of George N. Sr., and Susan (Mooney) Ackerman. He was a graduate of Boston Trade School and attended Northeastern University. He had served in the Navy during World War II.

He had been a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning contractor. He had owned York Sheetmetal from 1969-1973, was a chief estimator at Worcester Air from 1973-76 and later worked for Monahan & Loughlin, Inc. of Hudson Falls, N.Y. He also worked as general manager for New England Filter of Boston. He also worked on the construction of the shield over the Maine Yankee Nuclear Reactor.

He had been a member of the Boardman-Ellis Post No. 6977 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as the post commander several times. He was also a past district commander of the V.F.W. He served as Tyler of the York Elks Post No. 2788 and served as Tyler and past senior warden for Mt. Lebanon AF & AM Lodge of Boston. He was a member of the Kora Temple of Lewiston, Maine and the American Legion of Lake George, N.Y. He had served as president of the York School District and oversaw the construction of Coastal Ridge Elementary School and construction at the York Middle School.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy H. "Lou" (Davis) Ackerman of York Beach.

Other survivors include a son, Timothy A. and his wife, Edith Ackerman, of Melrose, Mass.; a daughter, Melissa J. Ackerman, of Richmond, Va.; two stepsons, Randy Wilkinson of Balsam Lake, N.Y. and Edward Wilkinson of Leominster, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Susan K. Vautour, of Leominster, Mass.; four brothers, George N. Ackerman Jr. of Tewksbury, Mass. and Wells, Maine; Frederick Ackerman of Kingston, Mass.; James Lionel Ackerman of Laconia, and Ronald H. Ackerman of Marblehead, Mass.; and six grandchildren.

Dean C. Smith

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Dean Crawford Smith, 74, C.G., V.P. and genealogist, of Portsmouth, and Goleta, Calif., passed away at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif., Monday, Jan. 28 , 2000, after a brief illness.

The only child of Daniel L. and Marion A. (Ordway) Smith, he grew up during the Depression with his mother, grandfather and extended family in Claremont where he graduated from Stevens High School. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II as a Navy Gunner Mate 3rd Class and on shore patrol in the Philippines. After the war, he graduated with honors from the Thompson School of Agriculture, at the University of New Hampshire, and worked in agriculture for 15 years with several companies, including the Farm Bureau in New Hampshire, Iowa and Rhode Island. While in Iowa, he took a dramatic leadership role in emergency volunteer relief efforts following the devastating 1954 tornadoes.

In 1961, he changed careers and joined Groton, Mass.-based New England Business Service (NEBS), as its first product manager. His keen business sense, mixed with genuine regard for co-workers and clients was extremely successful. He is remembered for furthering the careers of both men and women with no respect for a glass ceiling. He was always humble in the face of a changing business world that valued advanced degrees. In 1985, he retired as vice president of marketing and vice president of corporate development (New Ventures). Many of his business form designs are still in use.

He was charter president of the Rotary Club of Wakefield, R.I., and a member at Jefferson and Maquoketa, Iowa; Groton, Mass.; and Kittery Rotary Clubs. He was an honorary member of the Goleta, Calif. Rotary. He was a member of the New Hampshire President's Council and served on the board of directors of numerous organizations, including Adventures in Caring Foundation (Santa Barbara), whose members make compassionate visits to hospitals and hospices.

He held a lifelong interest in archaeology and took great pleasure working with the crew on a York, England, excavation which he funded in the 1980s. He was an accomplished woodworker and lovingly restored his Pepperell, Mass. home. He was an avid golfer and horticulturist on both coasts.

In 1987, he brought together many years of research on his family history, and began an ambitious publishing program, tracing the ancestry of his mother's grandparents. His publications included a substantial body of highly-regarded articles and four books, the second of which won the prestigious 1993 Donald Lines Jacobus Award for genealogical excellence from the American Society of Genealogists. In 1995, he received his certificate of genealogy

He was a valued member and generous patron of many genealogical societies, including the Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society, the New Hampshire Society of Genealogists, and the Society of Genealogists in England. He was a life member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, on whose board of trustees he served 14 years as member, treasurer, and finally vice president. In 1997, NEHGS opened the Dean C. and Roberto J. (Stokes) Smith Technology Center, a modern microform and computer research facility made possible by the Smith's generosity.

In 1948, he married Roberta Jean Stokes of Springfield, Vt. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998 at a dinner-dance hosted by their children.

He is survived by his wife.

Other survivors include one son, Bradford Dean Smith, O.D., of Augusta, Maine; one daughter, Kristin Lynn Forest of Reno, Nevada; four granddaughters, Melinda Ann Hunt of San Bruno, Calif., Devon Marie Smith, Catherine Fern Smith, and Taylor Lynn Smith, all of Augusta; and one grandson, Ryan Joseph Smith of Augusta.

David B. Markey

PORTSMOUTH - David B. Markey, 70, of 132 Middle St., died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born May 7, 1929, he was the son of Joseph H. and Harriet M. (Hanson) Markey. He was a 1948 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

He had formerly been employed by the Sanford family as a carpenter and property manager. The Markey Paving Co. and prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the Portsmouth Herald.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph Markey of Portsmouth; three nieces, Joel Markey of Portsmouth, Marilyn Ecker of Schillington, Pa, and Janet Markey of Tuftonboro; and grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews.

Christopher B. Sparks

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Christopher Brian "Slim" Sparks, 29, of 419 Southwest Pine Island Road, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at the Cape Coral Hospital.

Born April 28, 1970, he attended Exeter High School.

He will be remembered for his acts of compassion to animals and his neighbors. He was loved by all his friends in Florida.

He is survived by his mother, Linda Anne (Semprini) Gove of Stratham; his father, Kenneth Robert Sparks and his stepmother, Marcia Sparks, of Stratham; two sisters, Kristine Heffernan of Las Vegas, Nv., and Kimberly Buxton of Stratham; a nephew, Michael Buxton of Stratham; paternal grandmother, Phyllis Sparks of Rye; maternal grandparents, Lino and Eileen Semprini of Madbury; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Arthur M. Murray

PORTSMOUTH - Arthur Maxwell Murray, 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at the Clipper Home after a lengthy illness.

Born July 27, 1913, in San Francisco, the son of Maxwell and Phyllis M. (Howard) Murray. He was a 1938 graduate of West Point.

He made the Army his career for 30 years, serving in Korea and Vietnam before retiring in 1968 as a colonel. He was the city manager of Red Lion, Pa. from 1971 to 1974, a fifth-generation member of the USMA, an Eagle Scout, was active in the Portsmouth Yatch Club, was a champion pistol shooter, and loved motorcycles, power boats, fishing and sports cars.

He is survived by his wife, Clare Randall Murray.

Other survivors include Frederic Murray of Redmond, Ore., John Murray of Sandy, Ore, and Conger Murray of Lamoine, Maine.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursdat at St. John's Episcopal Church.

Francis J. Clark

EAST KINGSTON - Francis James Clark, 82, of Haverhill Road, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton after a period of failing health.

Born Sept. 13, 1917, in Charlestown, Mass., he was the son of Ernest and Marion (Talbot) Clark.

He was a resident of East Kingston for 30 years, and a member of Mary Mother of Newton where he served as Deputy Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

He was a draftsman for the Itek Co. in Wilmington, Mass., for 15 years until his retirement.

He was the husband of the late, Mary (Schmidt) Clark, who died in 1988.

Survivors include five daughters, Maryanne Aguilar of Canton, Mich., Arlene Ward of Plymouth, Mass., Frances Weinand-Kelly of Andover, Mass., Janet Torrey of Kingston, Mass., and Karen Lisowski of Exeter; a son, Mark Clark of Exeter; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Phyllis R. O'Brien

AVON PARK, Fla. - Phyllis "Tillie" R. O'Brien, 81, of Avon Park, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Sebring, Fla.

She was born in Exeter and lived there until moving to Avon Park in 1989.

A General Electric employee for 22 years in Somersworth, she was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Avon Park. She was also a member of the Portsmouth Country Club.

She is survived by her husband, Hughey D. O'Brien, of 63 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Jackie Emerson of Somersworth, and Cheryl Boyko of Somersworth; two sisters, Lois Nelson of Rye, and Jean Chapman of Newmarket; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Virginia B. Staples

PORTLAND - Virginia B. Staples, 79, of 328 Turkey St., Tamworth, wife of Walter S. Staples, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the Maine Medical Center.

Born April 11, 1920, in Round Pond, Maine, she was the daughter of Earl G. and Louise (Harriman) Bennett, and was a 1936 graduate of Scarborough High School. She also attended the Eliot High School postgraduate program. While involved with that program she coached the girls basketball team. She was also a Girls Scout leader.

She moved to Eliot in 1936, and lived there until 1968 when she moved to Tamworth.

She worked for General Electric for 19 years. She also worked as a hostess for Valee's in Kittery for six years.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years.

Other survivors include two sons, John B. Barnard of Eliot, and Tilden Barnard of Somersworth; two daughters, Ruth Ann Sheffer of South Berwick, and Virginia Collier of Jeanette, Pa.; four stepsons, Daniel V. Staples of Milford, Russell C. Staples of Tamworth, James P. Staples of Louden, and Mark A. Staples of Bellingham, Mass.; four stepdaughters, Mary J. Holladay of Tamworth, Barbara G. Meader of Tamworth, Rebekah S. Pugh of Tamworth, and Diane S. Salazar of Tamworth; seven grandchildren; one great granddaughter, 12 step grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Barnard, and a sister, Elizabeth Libby.

Elizabeth A. Thomas

RYE - Elizabeth A. Thomas, 90, of 795 Washington Road, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Webster at Rye.

Born in Brooke, Va., on June 29, 1909, the daughter of the late Charles W. and Anna (German) Green.

She worked as a secretary for the Interstate Commerce Commission of the U.S. government.

She was the wife of the late Cecil H. Thomas.

Survivors include two sons, Lloyd D. Sullivan of North Hampton, Charles W. Sullivan of Ocoee, Fla.; one brother, Leroy Green of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Rebecca Worrell of Brooke, Va.; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Marie B. Frye

PLYMOUTH, Mass. - Marie B. (Blye) Frye, 93, formerly of Wells and Eliot, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000.

Born in Boston, she was the beloved wife of the late Everett O. Frye.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia M. Dixon of Plymouth, Mass.; three grandchildren, Sherryl Gunther of Colleyville, Texas, Richard Dixon of Plymouth, Mass., and Kenneth Frye of Brazoria, Texas; and two great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, a son, Everett O. Frye, Jr., and a granddaughter, Cynthia Dixon.

Jeanie Edgerly

HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for Jeanie Edgerly, 91, of 7 Depot Road was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. The Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Hampton, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Burial followed in the West View Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Rev. Knowlton. Services were conducted at the funeral home Friday evening by Orient Chapter No. 22, Order of the Eastern Star of Exeter and by East Rockingham Pomona Grange and Hampton Falls Grange No. 171 with nearly 75 members in attendance.
