Dr. Paul J. Sullivan

YORK BEACH - Dr. Paul J. Sullivan, D.P.M., 86, of 68 Airport Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born in Biddeford, he was the son of John L. and Lucy (Quinn) Sullivan and was a 1930 graduate of Lowell High School. He was also a 1934 graduate of Middlesex College of Medicine and a 1956 graduate of the Ohio College of Podiatry.

He was a podiatrist in Lexington, Mass. for 43 years before retiring in 1979.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church od York. He had been secretary of the Lexington Rotary Club for 33 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Lexington Gridiron and the Hancock Men's Club, and a charter member of the York Senior Center board of directors.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis (DiPalma) Sullivan of York Beach.

Other survivors include a son, Paul L. Sullivan Jr. of Medford, Mass.; two daughters, Mary Ellen Terry of Arlington, Mass., and Kathleen McClelland of Watertown, Conn.; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lawrence L. Sullivan.

Jeanie Edgerly

HAMPTON FALLS - Jeanie Edgerly, 91, of 7 Depot Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born in Lynn, Mass., on Oct. 2, 1908, she was the daughter of William and Martha (Hupper) Cash.

She was Hampton Falls town clerk and also librarian at the Hampton Falls Free Library from 1950 to '70.

A longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Hampton, she was also a 70-year active member and past master of the Hampton Falls Grange No. 171, member and officer of the East Rockingham Pomona Grange and member of the National Grange.

She was also a member of Orient Chapter No. 22 O.E.S. of Exeter, she served on the founding board of directors and was a former secretary of the Helen F. Batchelder Scholarship Fund. She was also a member of the Seabrook R.S.V.P. and chairwoman of its knitting group and member of the Seacoast TLC organization.

She was a former justice of the peace, an avid bridge player and was currently team captain of her bowling team with the Thursday morning bowling league at Exeter lanes.

She was the wife of the late Thayer S. Edgerly, who died in 1995. They were married for 69 years.

She is survived by one daughter, Roberta A. Sliva of Hampton Falls; six grandchildren, Douglas Carmichael, Nathan Kitchen, Jeanie Houghton, Megan Perry, Deborah Soucy and Beth Williams; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Helen E. Carmichael who died in 1971.

Beatrice M. Davis

PORTSMOUTH - Beatrice M. Davis, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth after a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 3, 1911, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Frank and Aldea (Gelinas) McKinnon.

A resident of Lowell, Mass., she was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. She was retired from Western Electric.

She was the wife of Louis E. Davis, who died in 1983.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Champagne and her husband, Robert, of Sun City Center, Fla., and Joyce Sheehan of Hampton; two sons, Wilbur Davis and his wife, Shirley, of Edmond, Okla., and Richard Davis and his wife, Martha, of Apollo Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday at St. Patrick's Church in Lowell, Mass. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Lowell.

Carl Bowden

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Carl F. Bowden, 84, of 50 Colonial Drive, were held Jan. 12, 2000.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by the Rev. Edward J. Kelley. Lector was Eileen Foley.

The Eucharistic gifts were presented by his grandchildren Mary and William Cooper.

Burial was in the family lot in First Parish Cemetery in York. The Rev. Fr. Kelley conducted the committal.

Pallbearers were his son-in-law, John Cooper, and grandson, William Cooper.

David Angelo Delfino

GREENLAND - David Angelo Delfino, 72, died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Dec. 17, 1927, in Concord, he was the son of Angelo Delfino of Ofina, Italy and Catherine (Kelly) Delfino of Lexington, Mass. He attended schools in West Concord and Lexington, Mass.

He served in the Air Force as a staff sergeant in both the European and Orient theaters.

In 1973, he formed David A. Delfino Plumbing, Heating and Wiring. He was a volunteer firefighter and police officer for the town of Greenland, as well as a respected and outspoken voice in Greenland Town Meetings, where he will be remembered as "Mr. Sludge."

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lucille (Moody) Delfino.

Other survivors include four daughters, Gloria Eisenman and her husband, Tom, of Santa Rosa, Calif., Alice Frampton and her husband, Damon, of Winterhaven, Fla., Angeline Huffman of Newport, N.C., and Brenda Delfino of Exeter; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Chase Jr., B. Gregory Newton II, Alicia Myers, Tabbatha Green, Tiffani Williams, James Williams II, and Amanda Gagne; four great grandchildren; a sister, Clara Gatley of Woburn, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Frances Comati and brother, William Delfino.

Gloria J. Bateman Wright

PORTSMOUTH - Gloria J (Craig) Bateman Wright, 59, of 33A Holiday Drive, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Exeter Healthcare in Exeter.

Born June 18, 1940, in New London, N.H., she was the daughter of Harold and Valia (Gaudreau) Craig.

She received her bachelors' degree from Weslyn College in Texas.

Prior to her retirement, she had formerly been employed as a registered nurse for Arlington Hospital in Dallas.

She was a member of Church Alive in Portsmouth, volunteering as a camp nurse and was active with Victims Inc. She enjoyed photography, motorcycles, hiking, peer counseling, church, sports and enjoyed being a comedian.

She was the wife of William E. Wright.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Sarah Bateman of Portsmouth; three sisters, Brenda Bess of Buffalo, Texas, Susan Poole of Orono, Maine, and Joan Craig of Florida; and a brother, Douglas Craig of Groton, Mass.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Barry Craig and A.G. Craig.

Mary C. Gurney

SUNAPEE - Mary Catherine Gurney, 10 weeks, of 57 Hilltop Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at New London Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1999, she was the daughter of Mark and Rhonda (Rzeczycki) Gurney of Sunapee.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her 5-year-old brother, David; paternal grandparents, Harry and Jill Gurney of Taunton, Mass.; maternal grandparents Paul and Lillian Rzeczycki of Claremont; great-grandmother Agnes Rzeczycki; and great-aunt Julia Kotomski.

Lena V. Devine

PORTSMOUTH - Lena Vera Devine, 90, died Tuesday, January 25, 2000, at the Newton Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Sanford.

Born Jan. 1, 1910, in Portsmouth, she was the youngest and last of five surviving of the five offspring of Max and Jenny Kuchinsky. During her 41-year marriage to the late William G. Devine, which began in Stockton, Calif., the Devines moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., Rochester, and Dover. They settled in Portsmouth following her husband's retirement from the military.

She was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association. From 1992, she lived at Newton Center, where she enjoyed many friendships and activities.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Gloria J. Bateman Wright

Francis W. Blanchard

YORK HARBOR - Francis W. "Frank" Blanchard, 86, of 6 Cameo Drive, Sentry Hill, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Nov. 18, 1913, in New Jersey, he was the son of Cecil K. and Edna (Wood) Blanchard. He was a graduate of Pennington (N.J.) High School and received a bachelors' degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University.

He worked for Hewitt-Robbins Corporation and Litton Corporation in New York for many years. During World War II, he invented a self-sealing gas tank for airplanes.

He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York and an honorary member of the York Rotary Club.

He was the husband of the late Gloria (Mazuca) Blanchard, who died Aug. 3, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Blanchard of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Carol Blanchard) Kenyon of Rochester, N.Y., and Patricia Blanchard of East Norwalk, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Diana Frazier and her husband, Harry Mortimore, of Toronto; a brother, Walter Blanchard of California; two sisters, Elinor Eleniewski of Portland, and Esther Herrell of California; six grandchildren, Jason, Justin, and Brian Freitag, Bonnie and Jenny Blanchard, and Joshua Frazier; and a great-granddaughter, Brittany.

Mary M. Laughton

SEATTLE - Mary Marvin Laughton, 87, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000.

She was born in Portsmouth.

She was the wife of the late Armine "Jim" W. Laughton, who died in 1976.

Survivors include a son, James M. Laughton and his wife, Alice, of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a daughter, Constance Campbell and her husband, A.C., of Seattle; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Roland A. Joy

NORTH BERWICK - Roland H. Joy, 87, formerly of Cambridge, Mass., and Wells, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in York Hospital.

Born June 22, 1912, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Arthur F. and Martha Clough Joy. He lived with foster parents, Allen B. and Grace Downing from 6 months until he was 17 years old. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and the Vesper George Art School in Boston.

He was employed at the Institution for Savings Bank in Boston, and was an employee at Filene's Department Store in Boston. He served as an officer in the Wells Police Department with the late Elmer Hutchins and was associated with the North Berwick Police Department for many years.

He was a member of the Ocean Lodge AF&AM of Wells and an active member of Priscilla Lodge O.E.S. No. 35 of Wells. He was also active in Boy Scouting in Wells and Cambridge, and was a Chapter Advisor of High Pine Chapter of DeMolay in Wells. He served as an advisor of the Arundel Assembly Order of the Rainbow Girls in Kennebunk. He was also a member of the St. David's Episcopal Church in Kennebunk.

He was the husband of Mary E. Joy for 65 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Alan C. Joy of Lyman, Maine, and Peter H. Joy of North Berwick; two daughters, Mary Annah Joy of Lyman, and Elizabeth E. Eckhart of Portsmouth; a brother, Robert Joy of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Carpano of Dover and Midlothian, Va.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
