Muriel R. Hunt

MERRIMAC, Mass. - Muriel R. Hunt, 73, of 42 Merri Village, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at the Seacoast Health Center Inc.

Born June 5, 1926, in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late George H. and Eloise A. (Page) Lamott. She attended and graduated from Hampton Academy in 1944.

In the late 1940s, she worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a secretary. Recently, she worked for Tower Press in Seabrook and Complex Medical Supplies in Stratham, retiring in 1994.

A resident of several Seacoast communities, she moved from Hampton to Exeter in 1976. Residing in Exeter for seven years, she moved to Newton, N.H., before moving to Amesbury, Mass., in 1990. Since 1994, she has been a resident of Merrimac.

She was a charter member of the Hampton Beach Fire Department Women's Auxiliary.

Survivors include eight children, James K. Hunt of Hampton, Lee Hunt of Houston, Susan Doughty of Newton, Michael Hunt of Berwick, Eloise Aucoin of Epping, Judy Towle of New Durham, Bob Hunt of Hampton and Tracey Daniels of Amesbury; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, George Lamott Jr., of Hampton; two sisters, Eleanor Sturtevant and Audrey Bouvard, both of Chicopee, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arthur E. Irish Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - Arthur E. Irish Jr., 90, of 245 Middle St., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born Dec. 15, 1909, in Portland, he was the son of the late Arthur E. Irish Sr. and Elsie M. (Bowie) Irish.

He served in the N.H. National Guard and prior to his retirement in 1967 was employed as a foreman/inside machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; a 50-year member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 FM&AM of Portsmouth; a member of Washington Arch Chapter No. 3, Davenport Council No. 5 of Royal and Select Masters, DeWitt Clinton Commandery, and N.H. Consistory 32 degree of Nashua; and a charter member of Order of DeMolay of Portsmouth.

He was the husband of Phyllis (Fuller) Irish, whom he married in 1934.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter and son, Gail E. Irish and David E. Irish, both of Mechanic Falls, Maine; three grandsons; two granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Irish; and two sisters, Dorothy McCaffrey and Ruth Hutchings.

Gary A. Risden

PORTSMOUTH - Gary A. Risden, 49, of 117 Blue Heron Drive, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, after a brief period of illness.

Born Feb. 10, 1950, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Rose (Paola) Risden and the late Wetzel Eric Risden. He was a 1968 graduate of Portsmouth High School, and attended the University of New Hampshire.

For many years, he was employed as a hair technician with various salons in the Seacoast area. He loved music and was a disc jockey at many parties and functions.

He was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

In addition to his mother of Portsmouth, survivors include a son, Adam G. Risden of Lawrence, Mass.; a brother, Terry Risden of Portsmouth; two sisters, Sherry Poisson of Greenland and Angela Risden of Portsmouth; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a sister, Lee Ann Risden.

Clarence J. Parsons Sr.

KITTERY - Clarence J. "Larry" Parsons Sr., 85, of 1 Idlewood Lane, No. 28, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at The Homestead Nursing Care Center.

Born Nov. 23, 1914, in Danbury, Conn., he was the son of Alfred and Nettie (Taylor) Parsons, and attended Norwalk schools.

Before retiring, he worked as a manager for The Getman and Judd Lumber Yard, Kent, Conn.

He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Sharon, Conn.

He was the husband of Kathleen (Verity) Parsons for 50 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Clarence J. Parsons Jr. of Minneapolis, David Parsons of Sharon, and Christopher Parsons of Portsmouth; three daughters, Marie Wilber of Sharon, Heidi Parsons of Concord, N.C., and Kathleen Meredith of Newton, N.J.; 12 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Addie M. Davis

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Addie May (Pettingill) Davis, 82, of 377 Maplewood Ave., were held Saturday at the Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth. The Rev. David McCarthy, pastor of the Advent Christian Church, officiated. Words of reflection were given by the deceased's son, Dwight D. Dodd. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Harold L. Barr

YORK - Harold L. Barr, 84, of 15 Church St., York Beach, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at York Hospital.

Born Dec. 6, 1915, in York, he was the son of James and Elizabeth Welch Barr. He attended local schools and graduated from York High School, Class of 1933.

He served his country in the Navy during World War II.

He was later employed as an electrical foreman for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1972.

After his retirement, he and his wife made their home in Lantana, Fla. They lived there for 27 years.

He enjoyed reading, spending time with his dog Raggs, and listening to classical music.

He was a member of St. Aspiquid Masonic Lodge in York.

He was the husband of the late Ruth Emerson Barr.

Survivors include a son, Robert Barr and his wife, Joanne, of Wilmington, N.C.; three grandsons, Gary J. Barr of Stratham, Glenn A. Barr of Kingston, and Scott E. Barr of Kittery; his dear friend, Charlotte Rhodes of York Beach; and his dog Raggs.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Emerson Barr.

Arthur E. Lessard

NORTH HAMPTON - Arthur E. Lessard, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Exeter Hospital after a brief period of illness.

Born Jan. 9, 1917, in Danville, N.H., he was the son of the late Dana and Isa May (Collins) Lessard. He grew up in Danville and graduated from Sanborn Seminary in Kingston in 1938.

Formerly of Portsmouth, he resided in North Hampton, where he has been active in many organizations, for 45 years.

He was a lieutenant in the North Hampton Call Fire Department and served as assistant fire warden in North Hampton.

He retired after 22 years as a supervisor at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He served in the Army during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 35 in Hampton. He was also a life member of Squampscott DAV of Exeter.

A member of Oceanside Grange No. 260 in Hampton, he was also a Golden Shief member of East Rockingham Pomona.

He was an active member and usher at the United Methodist Church of Hampton, and was a member of St. James Lodge F&AM of Hampton since 1961. He was formerly a member of Gideon Lodge in Kingston, which he joined in 1953.

He was a senior member of Scottish Rites in Portsmouth, the Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord, and a member of the Portsmouth Shrine Club.

He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was active in Hampton Senior Citizens and was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Barbara May) Royal of Hampton; two grandchildren, Mrs. David (Rhonda) Gardiner of Greenland, and Lorre Royal of Hampton; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lloyd Lessard of Sandown and Oliver Lessard of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; three sisters, Rebecca Shrively of Waynesboro, Pa., Marion Arnold of North Miami, Fla., and Ruth Sletten of Acton, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Virginia F. Hutton

STRATHAM - Virginia F. Hutton, 77, of 163 Winnicutt Road, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at her home.

Born June 25, 1922, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Marion (Meader) Yeaton.

A graduate of Portsmouth High School in 1940, she worked for many years at Yeaton Greenhouse and Garden of Eves in Greenland before retiring in 1987. She also worked for the Town Crier newspaper in Stratham.

She was a member of the Stratham Community Church and the Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxillary and the Stratham 76ers. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years.

She was the wife of the late Wilford Stires, Merrill Smith and John Hutton II.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Vaughn (Frances) Morin of Greenland; four grandchildren; several stepchildren, including John Hutton III and his wife Carol, with whom she had resided; three sisters, Barbara Scamman of Stratham, Dorothy Pauli of Pennsylvania, and Evelyn Kemner of Pennsylvania; one brother, Robert Yeaton of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter Merrilee Geadtke.

George H. Haynes

PORTSMOUTH - George H. "Whitey" Haynes, 84, of Richboro and Warminster, Pa., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Holy Redeemer Hospital, Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of the late Paul and Violet Smith Haynes. He graduated in 1934 from Portsmouth High School, where he played football.

A master plumber and steamfitter by profession, he worked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard during the war. After the war, he went on to work at Sperry-Univac Co. in Blue Bell, Pa., where he worked for 25 years in the plant engineering department. After his retirement in 1978, he worked for Fox Chase Center in its maintenance department.

He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Richboro.

A former football player for the Frankford Yellow Jackets, he was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening.

He was affectionately known as "Father Bear" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia V. Cowden and her husband, William, of Philadelphia, and Carolyn N. Thompson and her husband Dr. Joseph Thompson, of Holland, Pa.; a son, Paul T. Haynes and his wife, Jeanne, of Moorestown, N.J.; a sister, Nona Philbrick of Rye, N.H.; a brother, Dr. Harry Haynes of Cape Cod; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Maxine J. Whitney

KITTERY - Maxine J. (Campbell) Whitney, 73, of 119 Whipple Road, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at the Homestead Nursing Care Center.

Born May 18, 1926, in Kittery, she was the daughter of James H. and Lillian (Goodwin) Campbell. She attended local schools and was a 1943 graduate of R.W. Traip Academy.

She was employed as a bookkeeper and secretary for different offices in the area.

A member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery, she was a Sunday School teacher there for many years. She was also a member of the Order of the Pocahontas.

For many years, she volunteered as a Girl and Boy Scout leader, and was a past president of the Mitchell School PTA in Kittery Point.

She enjoyed camping and would do anything for her children or any other children who needed her.

She was the wife of Irving E. Whitney.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Irving E. Whitney of Kittery; a daughter, Virginia Roux of South Berwick; a brother, Gordon Campbell of Bay of St. Louis, Miss.; and three grandchildren.

Barbara Withem-Garner

PORTSMOUTH - Barbara (Slate) Withem-Garner, 48, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at her home in Tracy, Calif.

She was born in Amesbury, Mass. on May 20, 1951, the daughter of Sidney and Annie (Fowler) Slate.

After marrying seven years ago, she moved to California.

She resided for 41 years in the Seacoast area, attending school in Hampton. She also lived in Exeter, Rochester and Somersworth.

Her love in life was animals, which includes her Siamese cats. Her wish was to open a home for stray cats and dogs.

She is survived by her husband, John Garner of Tracy, Calif.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Frank Trembley; two grandchildren in Deerfield; two sisters, Eva Call of Dover and Colleen Hodges of Berwick; and one brother, Sidney Slate Jr.

Services will take place in Tracy, Calif.
