Hubert M. Carmichael

JACKSON, Miss. - Hubert M. Carmichael, 86, a retired sales representative of South Pear Orchard, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, of respiratory failure at Baptist Medical Center.

Born in Mobile, Ala., he grew up in Jackson, Miss. He was a graduate of Central High School and Millsaps College, where he wa a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

After college, he was director of Jackson's Parks and oversaw the reconstruction of the Jackson Zoo, including the popular Monkey Island.

During World War II, he attended Officer Candidate School in Orlando, Fla., and served as a major in the Air Force in Guam and Japan.

After the war, he moved to Atlanta, where he was regional sales manager of Locke Insulator Corp. A resident of Atlanta, he wa a member of the Lions Club and an elder in Peachtree Christian Church. He was a member of the General Electric Elfins Club and a lifetime member of the Atlanta Athletic Club.

In 1969, he moved to Locke's Baltimore headquarters. There, he was a member of Severna Park Methodist Church and the Chartwell Country Club.

In 1975, he moved to Jackson, Miss., as the U.S. marketing manager for Locke Insulator Corp., from which he retired in 1978. He was a member of the MS Golf Seniors Association, serving for a number of years as vice president and golf tour director. He also was a member of the Colonial Country Club, Beavers Investment Club, Caledonia Society of Jackson, and First Christian Church, where he served as an elder.

He was the husband of Charlotte Loftis Carmichael of Jackson.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Hubert (Michael) Carmichael Jr. of Newington, N.H., and Laird Carmichael of El Paso, Texas; two daughters, Patsy Sachs of Woodbridge, Va., and Lucy Kimberly of Arnold, Md.; a brother, Charles Carmichael of Jackson, Miss.; a sister, Virginia Shackelford of Jackson, Miss.; and 10 grandchildren.

Samuel J. Jackson

TWIN MOUNTAIN, N.H. - Samuel John Jackson, 58, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Littleton Hospital.

Born Jan. 21, 1941, in Andover, Mass., he was the son of the late Samuel and Lillian (Holmes) Jackson. He owned and operated a catering company and was a former chef at the Rusty Hammer in Portsmouth.

He was a member of the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Appalachian Mountain Club, National Home Gardening Club, and Adventure Club of North America.

Survivors include one son, J. Russell Jackson of Miami, Fla.; three daughters, Laura E. Quinlan and Judith A. Olisky, both of Lawrence, Mass.; and Shelley L. Jillson of Pepperrell, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Jayne B. Caplette

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. - Jayne B. Caplette, 38, formerly of Portsmouth and Dover, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz., after losing her hard-fought battle with cystic fibrosis.

Born Aug. 18, 1961, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Robert and Harriet (Kolikof) Tucker, both Portsmouth natives who currently reside in Scottsdale. She graduated from Dover High School in 1978.

For several years before declining health forced her to stop working, she was employed at the Mayo Clinic. As both an employee and patient, she was admired for her courage by co-workers, and by the doctors and nurses who later cared for her.

She loved visual arts and crafts, and she designed and marketed a line of Victorian jewelry.

She was the wife of Ronald Caplette, formerly of Rochester, who currently resides in Apache Junction.

In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include two brothers, Marvin Tucker and his wife, Pam, of Riverside, Calif., and Steven Tucker of Marquette, Mich.; a sister, Kelli Tucker of Scottsdale; two nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Her family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Bethesda, MD 20814.

Philip R. Lyons

HAMPTON - The funeral for Philip R. Lyons, 79, of 15 Salt Meadow, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church in Rye Beach. The Rev. Joseph O'Connor, OSA, of Merrimack College, North Andover, Mass., was celebrant.

Salvatore DiVincenzo was acolyte. Judith Kish was organist and pianist. Mary Louise Arcidi was cantor and soloist. Charles M. Lyons, son of the deceased, offered the eulogy.

Cremation followed the Mass in the Phoenix Crematory.

Pallbearers were Christopher Brook, Timothy Brook, Michael Lyons, Adam Gryglas, Kevin Sullivan and Richard Sullivan.

Addie May Davis

PORTSMOUTH - Addie May (Pettingill) Davis, 82, of 377 Maplewood Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born April 19, 1917, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Monroe and Hattie Pettingill.

She loved and enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was the wife of the late Leland W. Davis.

Survivors include her son, Dwight D. Dodd of Moultonboro, N.H.; her daughter, Beverly A. Adams of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Michelle Mann of Xenia, Ohio, Cindy Adams of Barrington, Bill Adams of Barrington, Barbara Rodi of Cranston, R.I., and Debra A. Dodd of Gilmanton, N.H.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

LaVerne W. Loop

CHESTER, Vt. - LaVerne "Larry" W. Loop, 92, of Chester, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Springfield Hospital.

He graduated from New York University in 1929 and worked at Guaranty Trust Co. Bank on Wall Street, New York City, for 25 years. Following World War II, he spent two-and-a-half years with the U.S. military government in Berlin.

In 1965 he retired as cashier at the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Matawan, N.J., and moved to Maine, where he lived until 1995.

He was the husband of Margaret Forsyth Loop, who died in July 1988.

Survivors include a daughter, Jonne L. Adler of Chester; two grandsons, Richard Adler of Acaukeek, Md., and John Adler of Chester; a granddaughter, Susan Adler of Somersworth; and two great-granddaughters, Bethany and Emily of Chester.

Enes F. Bazzocchi

PORTSMOUTH - Enes F. Bazzocchi, 75, of 62 Winter St., died at her home Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, after a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 9, 1924 in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Joseph and Maria (Romboli) Bazzocchi and was a resident here most of her life.

A 1942 graduate of Portsmouth High School, she also graduated from Keene Teachers College in 1946. She taught in Ossippee and New London, Conn. After working for the New Hampshire Department of Welfare, she retired in 1988.

She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the Catholic Daughters of America.

In addition to her love for the Seacoast area, she also enjoyed traveling. Her travels took her to Italy, Paris, London, Argentina and the Caribbean Islands.

She is survived by her sister, Mary L. Bazzocchi, with whom she lived; a brother, Ramon Bazzocchi and his wife Muriel of Nashua; a nephew, Stephen J. Bazzocchi and his wife Dianne of Nashua; a niece, Catherine A. Dirsa and her husband Thomas of Londonderry.

Margaret E. Cerami

MANCHESTER - Margaret E. (Keenan) Cerami, 73, of Manchester, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Concord Hospice House, Concord, following a lengthy period of declining health.

Born Feb. 12, 1926, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Cassily) Keenan. She graduated from Portsmouth High School. She resided in Manchester for many years.

In 1981, she earned a degree in human services from New Hampshire College. Afterward, she did graduate work at Springfield College.

Before her retirement in 1991, she was a case worker with the state of New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. She was also an instructor at New Hampshire College and Castle Junior College.

She was a volunteer with Visiting Nurse Services _ Home Health and Hospice Care, and a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.

An avid reader, she enjoyed the outdoors, especially being near the ocean. She was very devoted to her family.

She was the wife of the late Paul J. Cerami, who died March 19, 1992, for 45 years.

Survivors include three sons, James P. Cerami of Ashland, N.H., Thomas R. Cerami of Brookline, N.H., and Paul J. Cerami of Naples, Fla.; four daughters, Mary "Trudy" Gelinas and her husband, Ronald, of Litchfield, N.H., Kathleen M. Daigle and her husband, Daniel, of Manchester, Elaine M. Langton and her husband, Timothy, of Manchester, and Kristen A. Cerami of Concord; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Keenan of Oceanside, Calif., Richard Keenan of El Paso, Texas, and Paul Keenan of Hudson, N.H.; a sister, Caroline Ploude and her husband, Edward, of Mount Erie, Md.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carl F. Bowden

PORTSMOUTH - Carl Freeman Bowden, 84, of 50 Colonial Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born Sept. 17, 1915, in York Beach, he was the son of Fred and Nellie (Freeman) Bowden. He was a 1935 graduate of York High School and a 1940 graduate of the Wentworth Intsitute of Technology in Boston. He had resided in Portsmouth since 1942.

For 30 years, he had worked as a naval architect at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and a member of the N.A.R.F.E.

He was the husband of Louise (Harnedy) Bowden for 57 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Karen Bowden Cooper of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Mary and William Cooper; and a niece, Melinda Kershaw.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Louise Bowden; a grandson, Timothy Cooper; three brothers and a sister.

Philip R. Lyons

HAMPTON - Philip R. Lyons, 79, of 15 Salt Meadow, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Oct. 1, 1920, in Manchester, he was the son of the late John M. and Hazel (Riley) Lyons. He was a 1938 graduate of Manchester Central High School, where he excelled in hockey and football, and later attended Northeastern University in Boston.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theatre. He continued with the Army Reserves for 20 years, retiring with the rank of major.

Until 1955, he worked in management with Amoskeag Paper Co. He later took the position of superintendent of Madison Paper Co. in Madison, Maine, where he served until 1962.

From 1962-1975, he served as a law firm administrator in Boston for Goodwin, Procter & Hoar, and until his retirement in 1990, for the law firm of Burns & Levinson, also in Boston.

He was the husband of Ellen F. (Ryan) Lyons.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Charles M. Lyons of Scarborough, Maine; two daughters, Elizabeth L. Brook of Scarborough, and M. Kathleen Gryglas of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Alphonse R. (Jane Ann) Renaud of Littleton, N.H., and Mrs. Edward C. (Margaret) Hayes of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

Patricia O. Polson

GREENLAND - Patricia Olga Polson, 85, of 705 Post Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Jan 23, 1914, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Tito and Pia (Cherbini) Zoffoli. She had been a resident of Norfolk, Va., for many years before moving to Greenland six years ago.

She was a communicant at the Church of the Immaculate Conception and a member of the Retired Officers Club.

She was the wife of the late Charles Leon Polson.

Survivors include a daughter, Blanche Henderson, with whom she resided; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lydia Paul of South Berwick, Josephine Keck of Nottingham, and Lena Springer of Hanover, Pa.; two brothers, Richard Zoffoli of Rye and Mundo Zoffoli of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
