Louis W. Trudeau

HAMPTON - The funeral for Louis W. Trudeau, 76, of 19 Hemlock Haven, was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton.

The Rev. Daniel J. Sinibaldi, associate pastor, was the celebrant; acoloytes were Larry Murphy, Rudy Begin and Robert Grissemeer. Organist was Nelson K. Ward and the soloist was Patricia Mackensen.

The readings were by Sister Doris Ouelette, C.S.C., and the gifts were presented to the altar by Heath Dion and Lisa Checkalski. Words of remembrance were offered by Heath Dion. The flag covering the casket was presented to his widow, June E. Trudeau.

Pallbearers were Richard Dion, Heath Dion, Jack Kavanagh, Gary Checkalski and Robert Wuchert. Cremation followed in the Phoenix Crematory, Hampton.

Raymond M. McComb

HAMPTON - Raymond M. McComb, 83, of Naves Road, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 7, 1916, in Malden, Mass., he was the son of the late Raymond P. and Alice (Morris) McComb.

A graduate of Sanborn Seminary, he served in the Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He also graduated from the University of New Hampshire and Wayne State University in Michigan, earning a degree in pharmacy.

He was formerly employed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass., as an orderly. He worked for many years as a pharmacist at Tobey's Drug Store in Hampton and Newman's Pharmacy in Dover. He was a longtime member of the Hampton First Congregational Church, and was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 35 in Hampton.

He was the husband of the late Ruth A. (Desmond) McComb, who died in 1998.

Survivors include his son, Barry M. McComb of Hampton; his daughter, Jane A. McComb of Greenland; a granddaughter, Emily McComb of Seabrook; and several cousins.

Ralph Hobson Stevens

YORK - Ralph Hobson Stevens Jr., 76, of 15 Stoney Ridge Road, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at his home.

Born Sept. 7, 1923, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Ralph and Velzorva (Prosser) Stevens Sr. and attended local schools.

He enlisted and served his country in the 1st Cavalry of the Army.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and his garden. He was a supporter of the National Rifle Association, BASS, Sportsman Alliance of Maine, the Audubon Society and the National Wildlife Foundation, and a member of the York American Legion.

After his retirement as a submarine inspector for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, he was employed to restore many of the early American homes that are enjoyed by visitors to Strawbery Banke.

He was the wife of Lorraine G. Hart for 23 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include five sons, Roy Stevens of York, Ralph Stevens of North Berwick, Brad and his wife Karen Stevens of South Berwick, Thomas and his wife Isabel Stevens of South Berwick, Marc and his wife Nathalie Pommier of North Berwick; four daughters, Rosalie and Bill Kozlowski of South Berwick, Denise Johnson of Cape Neddick, Michele and Peter Pommier-Diel of Miami, Monica and Martin Pommier-Kravitt of Katowah, N.Y.; two brothers, Francis Stevens of Portsmouth and Robert Stevens of Portsmouth; a sister, Ruth Walker of Eliot; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joyce E. Burgess

DOVER - Joyce E. Burgess, 59, of Dover Point Road, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, after a brief period of illness.

Born Nov. 18, 1940, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Emily (Hutchins) Troutman.

She was an active member of the Salvation Army of Portsmouth.

Most recently, she had been employed in the molding department of Palmer-Chenard in Somersworth.

She was the wife of Stanley E. Burgess.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Patrick Burgess and his wife, Lisa, of Madbury; two daughters, Susan (Mrs. Brian) Rousseau of South Berwick, and Amanda Burgess of Dover; two sisters, Sadie (Mrs. Thomas) Varney of Wakefield, N.H., and Amanda (Mrs. Robert) Luhrs of Edison, N.J.; six grandchildren; and an aunt, Bea Taylor of Berwick.

She was predeceased by her brother, Kenneth Troutman, and her sister, Joanne Putnam.

Bertha Moore

PORTSMOUTH - Bertha Alcott Moore, 77, of 106 White Cedar Blvd., died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 30, 1922, in Malden, Mass., she was the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Alcott) Moore. She moved to Portsmouth about 10 years ago.

She was a medical secretary for the American Board of Foreign Missions. Later, she became secretary to the late Bishop Anson Phelps Stokes, Episcopal bishop of Eastern Mass. At a later date, she became secretary to the dean of Field Education at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass.

James Aitken

PORTSMOUTH - James Aitken, 77, of 579 Sagamore Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at his home after a lengthy period of illness.

Born Jan. 16, 1922, in Aberdeen, Scotland, he was the son of James and Jessie (Beattie) Aitken. He moved to Canada as a young man and received his degree as a chartered accountant from McGill University.

He was employed by the firm of Price-Waterhouse from 1946 until 1979; for many years, he worked in Venezuela. He moved to Portsmouth five years ago from Westfield, Vt.

He was a member of the North Congregational Church and the Canadian Chartered Accountants Society.

He was the husband of Henrietta (Anderson) Aitken for 53 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Joan Donhauser of Eliot, Lea Wells of Richmond, Ky., Deborah Aitken of Portsmouth, and Patricia Doebbler of Armenia, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Thomas, Zachary and Kate Donhauser, Nathan and Stephanie Wells, and Keith Caine; one great-grandchild, Callie Stephens; and several cousins in Scotland.

Marvis R. Dodge

ELIOT - Memorial services for Mrs. Marvis R. (Smith) Dodge, 79, of 289 State Road, were held at Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Thursday.

The Rev. Stephen Aldrich, pastor, of the Church at Spruce Creek, Kittery, officiated.

In attendance were members of the Church at Spruce Creek; The Apostolic Church in Portsmouth; and representatives from the city of Portsmouth.

Burial will be Homeland Cemetery in Bristol, N.H.

Donald S. Bass

EXETER - Donald S. Bass, 84, of 218 Front St., died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, of natural causes at his home where he resided since 1963.

Born on March 26, 1915, in Boston, he was the son of the late George J., and Loretta (Matthew) Bass.

He was an Army veteran who served in World War II, serving in the European theater, attaining the rank of master sergeant.

He was an employee of Bethlehem Steel for 28 years and later served in the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff and a court officer. He was also a member of the Star in the East Lodge, No. 59, F & AM Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eleanor (Higgins) Bass of Exeter.

In addition to his wife, other family members include a son, Donald P. Bass of Annapolis, Md., three grandchildren, Donald P. Bass Jr., Michael P. Bass and Meredith P. Bass also of Annapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

Melvin R. Boshma

PORTSMOUTH - Melvin R. Boshma, 72, of 3 Beechstone, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Exeter Hospital after a long period of illness.

Born Sept. 25, 1927, in Chicago, he was the son of the late John and Emma Boshma.

For 35 years he was a truck driver for McLean Trucking. A longtime resident of Chicago, he moved to Portsmouth nine years ago. For more than 20 years he was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose.

He was the husband of Barbara (Paul) Boshma for 24 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a stepson, Joseph Rogers of Vista, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Sharon Badgery of Hammond, Ind., and Mrs. Kevin (Marsha) Gallant of Limington, Maine; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond Boshma of Mount Prospect, Ill.

Kenneth S. Pruett

AUGUSTA, Maine - Kenneth Sherwood Pruett, Sr., 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born Feb. 26, 1913, in Kittery, he was the son of Elmer Pruett and Ruth Philbrick Pruett.

He was class president at Traip Academy and graduated from the University of Maine in 1936, where he played football and baseball. He was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity.

He began his teaching career in Winter Harbor and Howland High School before coming to Augusta to teach at Cony High School for 30 years. His teaching career was only interrupted by his military service. He served as a chief petty officer in the Navy for three years during World War II.

He was president of the Maine Teachers Association in 1951.

His major hobby was fly fishing for salmon and trout in the fast waters of rivers and streams. He was a member of the American Contract Bridge League and with his wife, ran the Augusta Duplicate Bridge Club for many years.

In the true spirit of brotherhood, Ken and Sally opened their house to many young people over the years, and they are remembered fondly for their efforts, guidance and sense of humor.

He was the husband of the late Sally (Burleigh) Pruett. The couple was married for 54 years.

Family members include two sons, Donald Pruett and his wife Diane and James Pruett and his wife Sharon; two daughters, Nancy Pruett and Margaret Arbour and her husband David; eight grandchildren, Patricia Anne Cleary, Jonathan Pruett, Tyler Pruett, Erika Turner, James Pruett-Thurlow, Jamie, Jill and Jordan Pruett; three step-grandchildren, George Combellack, John Combellack and Mackenzie Stewart; two great-granddaughters, Josie Pruett and Erin Pruett; a sister, Helen Cook of Kittery; a brother, Joseph Pruett of Delaware; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Pruett.

Louis W. Trudeau

HAMPTON - Louis W. Trudeau, 76, of 19 Hemlock Haven, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Nov. 13, 1923, in Holyoke, Mass., the son of the late Louis W. and Melenia (Paquette) Trudeau.

He lived most of his life in Holyoke and attended local schools. He worked for the Uniroyal Tire Company in Chicopee, Mass., for 39 years. He was a veteran of the Marines.

He lived in Hampton since 1979 and wintered in Sarasota, Fla. After retiring, he worked for the state of New Hampshire as a supervisor at Hampton Beach State Park.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. While living in Holyoke, he was active in the Holyoke American Legion and was a member of the BPOE No. 909 of Newburyport, Mass. He volunteered for the Hampton Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed making people laugh.

He was the husband of June E. (Dion) Trudeau for 20 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include a son, Robert L. Trudeau of Sommerville, S.C., Richard J. Dion and his wife, Kathy, of Springfield, Mass.; two daughters, Lois T. Checkalski and her husband, Gary F., of Enfield, Conn., and Donna Wuchert and her husband, Robert, of Agawam, Mass.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita Gurty of Long Island, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Verner G.H. Johnson

YORK - Verner G.H. Johnson, 92, of 32 Tenney Hill Road, Kittery Point, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the York Hospital.

He was born Nov. 17, 1907, in Hogboda, Sweden. He worked as a chief engineer for the power plant at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He was a member of the Naval Lodge 184 F&AM, Kittery. He was also a member of the Independent Internal Order of the Vikings _ a Swedish organization.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, plants and birds.

He is survived by his sons, Lennart C. Johnson of Woburn, Mass. and Robert V. Johnson of Woonsocket, R.I.; daughters, Edith V. Lander, Kittery Point, and Linda M. Parker of Woburn, Mass.; nine grandchildren, a great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.
