Ottaway Newspapers owns Seacoast Newspapers, which publishes the Portsmouth Herald, Exeter News-Letter, Hampton Union, and Rockingham News.

Ottaway created The Times Herald-Record by merging the Times Herald and the Middletown Record in 1959-1960. It became the flagship of the Ottaway Newspapers group. He retired as president and chief executive officer in 1976.

Ottaway was born July 8, 1911. His father, E.J. Ottaway, was co-owner of the Port Huron, Michigan, Times-Herald. After high school, he attended the University of Michigan, but later transferred to Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Two years later, they moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., where he worked as the classified advertising manager.

In 1936, the couple bought their first newspaper, the Endicott Bulletin, then a semi-weekly in upstate New York, for $56,000. By 1970, Ottaway Newspapers Inc. had grown to nine dailies, and Ottaway merged his company into Dow Jones & Company in exchange for Dow Jones stock then valued at $36 million. The agreement gave Ottaway a seat on the Dow Jones board of directors from 1970 to 1984.

The Ottaway group now includes 19 dailies, 16 weeklies plus various other shoppers and publications in 11 states with annual revenues of $330 million. Total circulation is 555,587 daily and 531,268 on Sundays.
