PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Renée Marie LaBerge, 15, of 130 Deerfield Road, Northwood, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel on Saturday, with services held at the Northwood Congregational Church. The Rev. Maren C. Tirabassi, pastor, officiated. Pianist was Ruth Bencal. A musical selection was given by Stephen Philp, Kevin Scarponi and John Leeman. "Ave Maria" was sung by Renée's friend Liz Masten. Words of remembrance were offered by many friends.

In attendance were a large delegation of friends and teachers from Coe-Brown Academy; Northwood Elementary and Junior High schools; and representatives from Northwood Fire and Police Explorer Program; Joy of Dance in Northwood; and the Northwood Theatre Workshop.

Bearers were Aaron LaBerge, Bucky LaBerge, Dan McKenna, Rick LaBerge, Michael LaBerge, Wayne Brulotte, Jack Pickering and Brian Fogarty.

COUGHLIN - Florence A. Coughlin, 98, of 263 Rockland St., Portsmouth, died Dec. 28, 2000. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 505 N. Parkway, Memphis, TN 38105; or to the NHSPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885-0196.

SMITH - Annie R. "Nancy" Smith, 95, of Brentwood, formerly of Hampton, died Dec. 30, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of Paul Duhamel, c/o June Pietrantoni, 155 Boston Ave., Medford, MA 02155.

PHILLIPS - David A. Phillips, 75, of Kittery Point, Maine, died Jan. 1, 2001. There will be no visiting hours or service. Donations in his memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Raoul E. Bourque

AMESBURY, Mass. - Raoul E. Bourque, 80, of 59 High St., died early Tuesday morning at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport following a long illness.

He was the husband of Lucina M. (Gallagher) Bourque, to whom he had been married 60 years on Oct. 13, 2000.

Born in Amesbury on July 1, 1920, he was the son of the late Camille and Alma (Auffrey) Bourque and attended Amesbury High School.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as an electrician.

A self-employed electrician, he was the wiring inspector for the Town of Amesbury for many years.

He was a member and former president of the Polish National Alliance of Amesbury.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Patricia F. Grandmaison, and her husband, John, of Hampton, N.H., Joanne M. DeOliveira, and her husband, David, of Framingham, and Mary L. Gibbens, and her late husband, Peter, of Amesbury; nine grandchildren, Lynn Grandmaison of Amesbury, Susan Cestone, and her husband, Michael, and Jacqueline Grandmaison, all of Hampton, N.H., Mark DeOliveira, and his wife, Michele, of Upton, Brian and Christine DeOliveira, both of Framingham, Robert Gibbens of Maui, Hawaii, Michelle Kelleher, and her husband, James, of Amesbury, Kathleen Babine, and her husband, Robert, of Exeter, N.H.; five great-grandchildren, Mikael, Nikole, Sydney, Emma and Jackson; one brother, Mike Bourque, and his wife, Jan, of Amesbury; and several nieces and nephews.

BOURQUE - Raoul E. Bourque, 80, of 59 High St., Amesbury, Mass., died Jan. 2, 2001. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury, followed at 11 a.m. by a funeral mass at Holy Family Parish's St. Joseph's Church, Sparhawk Street, Amesbury. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Amesbury. Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Restoration Fund of Holy Family Parish, 6 Allen's Court, Amesbury, MA 01913.

John Walker Hart

PORTSMOUTH - John Walker Hart, 64, of 97 South St., died peacefully Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 20, 1936, in Cynthiana, Ky., the son of the late John Francis and Ida Glen Hart.

He graduated from Millersburgh Military Institute, Ky., in 1955 and served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1979 from the Pentagon with the rank of chief master sergeant.

He furthered his education with a B.S. degree in mass communications from Southern Colorado State College and a master's degree in counseling from Ball State University in Indiana.

He completed overseas assignments with tours in Seoul, Korea; Ramstein, Germany; and Saigon, Vietnam as editor of the 7th Airforce News. Prior to his military retirement, he served as Washington Bureau Chief for the European Edition of Stars and Stripes for three years.

In his civilian career, he worked in the Seacoast area for 15 years as a correspondent for the Manchester Union Leader.

As an active member of the community, he was past president of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, founder of Leadership Seacoast, and a longtime member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, where he was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship.

He was married to Maureen Hart of London, England, for 41 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Andrew J. Hart, and his wife, Sharon; and two grandsons, Walker and Alden, all of North Hampton; a daughter, Nicole M. Hart of Boston; and a sister, Geraldine Ewalt of Lexington, Ky.

A man of strong faith and spirituality, he was a member of St. Catherine's Church in Portsmouth and served as a Eucharistic minister for several parishes during his lifetime.

HART - John W. Hart, 64, of 97 South St., Portsmouth, died Jan. 1, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday at Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Catherine's Church, Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice, the John W. Hart Fund for a Leadership Seacoast Scholarship c/o Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, 446 Market St., Portsmouth, or Crossroads House, 600 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth.

Joanne Foley Moriarty

ELIOT, Maine - Joanne Foley Moriarty, 59, of 116 Goodwin Road, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at her home following a 14-year battle with cancer - a burden she carried with determination and dignity.

She was born July 15, 1941, in Newton, Mass., a daughter of the late Gerald A. and Winifred Poynton Foley. She attended Newton Public Schools, graduating from Newton High School in 1957.

She was married in July 1962 to her husband of nearly 40 years, Edward P. Moriarty, and lived in Connecticut, Pakistan, Singapore and New York before settling in Maine in 1973.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree, with honors, in sociology from Hofstra University in 1973 and completed her master's degree, with honors, in clinical social work at Boston college in 1987. She was subsequently elected to the Jesuit Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu.

From 1987 to 1997, she served as director of professional services for Saint Andre Home of Biddeford, and during the last years of her life, she was involved in family counseling through the state of Maine Department of Human Services. She also was involved in the design and enactment of both community- and school-based programs intended to promote wholesome family living, and the safety and emotional well being of children.

She served as a member of the Habitat for Humanity - York County Board of Directors, working to provide affordable housing for families with limited income in the area, in addition to traveling to Guatemala and Belfast, Northern Ireland, to participate in home building projects in those distressed countries.

She is survived by her husband, Edward, and three sons, Mark of Eliot, Myles of Rollinsford, N.H., and Kevin of Brookline, Mass. She also leaves behind her brother, William, and his wife, MaryAnn Foley, of Wellsley, Mass., and her two beloved grandchildren, Anthony and Jannell Moriarty.

Home was Joanne's dearest love, humanity her cherished cause.

MORIARTY - Joanne F. Moriarty, 59, of 116 Goodwin Road, Eliot, Maine, died Jan. 1, 2001. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday from St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H. Friends and family are invited to call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at her home at 116 Goodwin Road. (Evening visitors may park at The East Eliot Garage across the street.) In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andre Home Inc., 283 Elm St., Biddeford, Maine 04005.

Mildred H. Durham

NORTH HAMPTON - Mildred H. Durham, 73, of 20 Olde Locke Road, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Exeter Healthcare Inc. in Exeter.

Born in the borough of Queens, N.Y., on May 14, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Eugene M. and Estelle (Burton) Harris.

She moved to Marblehead, Mass., as a child, graduating from high school there in 1944. She attended Colby Junior College in New London, where she received an associate degree in liberal arts. She lived in the North Shore area before moving to North Hampton in 1960.

She worked as a medical secretary for several physicians in the Seacoast area. She also was a 25-year sales representative for Avon cosmetics.

She loved the ocean, bird-watching and was an avid lover of the outdoors.

She was the wife of Edward Durham for 37 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include three sons, Robert L. Shields of Bedford, Dana K. Shields of Hampton and Martin I. Durham of Rindge; one daughter, Karen Shields of Concord; two grandchildren, Jacob and Katie Durham of Rindge; one brother, Martin Harris of Florida; and several nieces and one nephew.

DURHAM - Mildred H. Durham, 73, of 20 Olde Locke Road, North Hampton, died Dec. 29, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Audubon Society of New Hampshire, 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord, N.H. 03301, or to the American Lung Association, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, N.H. 03110.

Elizabeth C. Hill

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Elizabeth C. (Betty) Hill, 80, of Norwood Farms Road, died suddenly on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born in Auburn on June 17, 1920, she was the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Sankis) Zenkevich. She attended Auburn schools and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1939. She furthered her education at the Auburn, Maine, School of Commerce.

She retired in 1980 from the PERA Division at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 20 years of service.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Raymond A. Hill; her daughter, Ruth Ann Hill, and son-in-law, John Brooks, of Mount Desert; her granddaughter, Leigh Katherine Brooks; and a sister, Ruth Little, and her husband, Robert Little, of Van Nuys, Calif. She was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.

HILL - Elizabeth C. (Betty) Hill, 80, of Norwood Farms Road, York Harbor, Maine, died Jan. 1, 2001. Services will be private. Donations may be made in her memory to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, Salisbury Avenue, York, ME 03909.

Joseph A. Bowley

BOWLEY - Joseph A. Bowley, 71, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Manchester V.A. Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Born in North Hampton and raised in Hampton, he was the son of Alexander L. and Alice (Brown) Bowley.

He served in the Army and made a cross-country trip in a covered wagon with his two horses and dog.

Family members include a son, Charles Bowley; six sisters, Mildred Seavy and Alice Dyer, both of Newmarket, Josephine Canniff of Lexington, Mass., Margaret Grandmaison and Arlene Leos, both of Hampton, and Cecile Valtin of Milford, N.Y.; three brothers, Alexander Bowley of Johnstown, N.Y.; Arthur Bowley of Exeter and William Bowley of Hampton; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Bowley of Hampton and Brenda Bowley of Glen; nieces and nephews; and dear friends Gloria Williams and Cindy and Rusty Harrison. There will be no calling hours or service.

Melvinea Colby

NORTH HAMPTON - Memorial services for Mrs. Melvinea (Webb) Colby, 85, of 140 Mill Road, North Hampton, were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth on Tuesday, with services held at the Greenland Community Congregational Church in Greenland. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, officiated. Ida Morang was organist.

In attendance were members of the church, including members of the Women's Alliance; representatives from Pomona Grange; Oceanside Grange; and the Greenland Historical Society.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Gregory Alexander Pride

KITTERY, Maine - Gregory Alexander Pride, 10 days old, of Wyman Avenue, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Born on Dec. 21, 2000, in Boston, he was the son of Jeffrey and Andree (Lennon) Pride. Besides his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Bernard and Rachel Lennon of Cherry Hill, N.J.; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

PRIDE - Gregory Alexander Pride, 10 days old, of Wyman Avenue, Kittery, Maine, died Jan. 1, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday from First Congregational Church, Kittery Point. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fair Tide, c/o Debby Ronnquist, 611 Haley Road, Kittery Point, ME 03905. Arrangements by the J.S. Jerry Lee Smalley

DOVER - Jerry Lee Smalley, 54, formerly of Thomaston, Maine, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born March 29, 1946, in Billings, Mont., he was the son of Benjamin W. and Helen (Skip) Samel Smalley Jr.

He attended Thomaston Schools and graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School, Class of 1964. He was a 1966 graduate of Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in automotive technology.

He was employed by Volkswagen of America Inc. as an ownership and technical specialist in southern New England. He was a master registered technician and kept up his National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence Certification.

His hobbies included boating, traveling, ballroom dancing and roller skating.

He was predeceased by his father, Ben Smalley Jr.; two sisters, Linda M. Smalley and Janelle I. Smalley; both paternal and maternal grandparents.

Survivors include his mother of Thomaston, Maine; a son, Jason Smalley of Barrington; a daughter, Jacelle Smalley of Saco, Maine; two brothers, Ron Smalley and his wife, Deborah, of Portland, Maine, and Ben Smalley and his wife, Betsy, of Nobleboro, Maine; several nieces and nephews.

SMALLEY - Jerry Lee Smalley, 54, formerly of Thomaston, Maine, died Dec. 29, 2000. Visiting hours were from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday at Davis Funeral Home, 35 Knox St., Thomaston, Maine. A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Wayne Sawyer of Thomaston Baptist Church officiating. Spring interment will be at Village Cemetery, Thomaston, Maine. In lieu of flowers friends may make donations to their favorite charity or The Friends of Montpelier, P.O. Box 326, Thomaston, ME 04861. Additional services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Rye Bethany Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye; (603) 964-5332. Directions from the south: take I-95 north to exit 5, turn onto Route 1 into Rye. Look for the Breakfast Hill Road shopping center on the left, then take a left onto Washington Road. STOCKING - Lois Wildes Stocking, 80, of Eliot, Maine, died Dec. 30, 2000. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 14 in First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York, Maine. There are no visiting hours. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lois W. Stocking/Jackson Memorial Library Acquisitions Fund, c/o Pam Wildes, 19 Adlington Road, Eliot, ME 03903 or to the Marlee Animal Shelter in Kennebunkport, in her name. BOSTON - Elwyn Richard Boston, of York Beach, Maine, died Dec. 8, 2000. A memorial service and ritualistic Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday in the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Portsmouth, 292 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. The family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, Mass. 02114. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Robert L. Jackson Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - CM1 Robert L. Jackson Jr., U.S. Navy retired, 77, of 80 Haven Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre.

He was born in Groton, Conn., on Oct. 14, 1923, the son of the late Robert L. Sr. and Alice R. (Call) Jackson.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1941. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and eventually enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Seabees. He also served in the European Command Headquarters, Frankfurt, Germany, and Paris; the Taiwan Defense Command in Taipei, Taiwan; and also in Vietnam, retiring in 1974. Over the years, he had been employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1982 with a total of 37 years of service to the U.S. government.

He was a member of North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; of the Emerson Hovey Post 168 VFW in Portsmouth; the Fleet Reserve Association; the China-Burma-India Veterans Association; and the Navy League.

Survivors include two nieces, Beverly Salzmann of Hinterbruehl, Austria, and Marsha Ogden of Silver Spring, Md.; a grandniece and four grandnephews; and several cousins.

A sister, Carolyn F. Payne, predeceased him.

JACKSON - CM1 Robert L. Jackson Jr., U.S. Navy retired, 77, of 80 Haven Road, Portsmouth, died Jan. 2, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at North Congregational Church Chapel, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends who desire may make donations in his memory to the Memorial Fund of North Congregation Church, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth NH 03801. Interment will be private in the spring. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.
