James D. Hamilton

HAMPTON - The funeral for James D. Hamilton, 66, of 15 Hackett Lane, was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Robert Lovejoy, pastor of the Faith Community Church, officiated. The Faith Community Church worship team provided music. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by Pastor Lovejoy.

Shane Hutchings presented the U.S. flag to Mr. Hamilton's widow, Florence R. (Vickery) Hamilton. Pallbearers were Brian K. Hamilton, Donald E. Hamilton, John Hamilton, Warren Caster, Russell Bridle and Hampton Police Chief William Wrenn. Bagpiper Matthew Noonan offered Scottish laments.

Masonic services were held at the funeral home Tuesday evening by St. James Lodge No. 102 F&AM with 25 Masons in attendance.

Lois Wildes Stocking

ELIOT, Maine - Lois Wildes Stocking, 80, died at home Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, after a long struggle with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.

The daughter of Kenneth Neil Wildes and Mildred Louise Aldrich, she was born in Fitchburg, Mass., in 1920, and as a young girl moved with her family to Melrose, Mass., where she graduated from Melrose High School in 1938. While a student at Boston University, she achieved distinction as the first woman editor of The Hub, the Boston University yearbook. She became a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, was honored with the Scarlet Key Award for outstanding achievement in student activities and graduated from Boston University in 1942 with a B.A. in sociology and anthropology from the College of Liberal Arts.

Her love for writing and literature led her to a career she cherished as a college librarian, first at Williams College, from 1954 to 1960, as a periodicals librarian and from 1962 to 1987 at Bennington College as an acquisitions/art collections librarian. Upon retirement from Bennington College, she moved to Tenants Harbor in 1988 where she became actively involved as a volunteer at the Jackson Memorial Library.

A physical fitness and gardening enthusiast, she was frequently sighted by neighbors and friends walking the roads near Marshall Point Lighthouse, Port Clyde, and the back roads of Tenants Harbor. In 1994 she moved to Eliot to share a household with her daughter, Pam, where she continued a lively walking routine until illness intervened. An outstanding athlete much of her life, her passion for tennis and cycling was well-known by her family and friends. Extremely well-read, she was never without the companionship of a book and was a loyal borrower at the Fogg Memorial Library in Eliot.

A grand friend to wildlife and animals, she cared for an extensive menagerie of beloved felines and canines at her home in Eliot until shortly before her death.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Wildes of Eliot; three sisters, Jan Fawcett of York Harbor, Barbara Curtis, and her husband, of Cape Elizabeth, and Carol Atkinson of Mattapoisett, Mass.; four grandchildren, Holly Wildes Garrison of Kittery, Christopher Dyson of Worcester, Vt.; Hilary Dyson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Shealea Dyson, and her husband, of Kittery Point; one great-grandson, Zander Cecil Wildes Dyson; and several nieces and nephews, including Judith Pettiford of Portsmouth.

STOCKING - Lois Wildes Stocking of Eliot, Maine, died at her residence Dec. 30, 2000. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York, Maine. There are no visiting hours. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lois W. Stocking/Jackson Memorial Library Acquisitions Fund, c/o Pam Wildes, 19 Adlington Road, Eliot, ME 03903; or to the Marlee Animal Shelter in Kennebunkport, Maine, in Lois' name. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Annie R. Smith

HAMPTON - The funeral for Annie R. "Nancy" Smith, 95, formerly of Hampton was held Wednesday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Maren Tirabassi officiated. Jean Goss was organist.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Tirabassi.

MORIARTY - Joanne F. Moriarty, 59, of 116 Goodwin Road, Eliot, Maine, died Jan. 1, 2001. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday from St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H. Friends and family are invited to call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at her home at 116 Goodwin Road. (Evening visitors may park at The East Eliot Garage across the street.) In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andre Home Inc., 283 Elm St., Biddeford, Maine 04005. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

William P. Maguire

PORTSMOUTH - William P. Maguire, retired Internal Revenue Service executive, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Maryland at the age of 82.

He was the husband of the late Pauline J. (Desjardins) Maguire and was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Wentworth Institute. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until the 1960s, when he accepted a position with the IRS at its Portsmouth office. He later served with the IRS from the Boston regional office as personnel supervisor until his retirement. After retirement he served as a member of the board of directors of the Northeast Federal Credit Union.

He enjoyed gardening, being the "family chef" and spending time with his family.

He is survived by a daughter, Charlene Hescock of Chevy Chase, Md.; a son, Sean Maguire of Centerville, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Celia A. Lonsway

ELIOT, Maine - Celia A. Lonsway, 94, of Farmer Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 29, 1906, in Kittery, she was the daughter of Clifford and Althea (Cole) Muchemore and attended local schools.

She was employed at the Silver Slipper and at F.W. Woolworth's in Portsmouth, N.H.

As an avid flower gardener, her gardens were admired by many in the area, and her determination at keeping those gardens beautiful even into her later years serves as an example for us all.

She was a member of Eliot United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her two daughters, Patricia and her husband, Phil Cress, of Eliot, and Jerri Ball of South Berwick; a son, Donald Lonsway of Eliot; her grandchildren, Richard, Timothy and Donald Cress, and Robert, Dennis, Dana, Thomas and John Ball; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her sister, Geraldine Wilson; her brother, Reginald Muchemore Sr.; and two grandchildren, Philip Cress and Jeffrey Ball.

LONSWAY - Celia A. Lonsway, 94, of Farmer Road in Eliot, Maine, died Jan. 3, 2001. A funeral will be held Sunday from Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot. Friends and family may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 By-Pass, Kittery, Maine. Burial will be in the spring at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

Dorothy C. Lagassa

EXETER - Dorothy C. Lagassa, 85, of Riverwoods, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the Lodge at Riverwoods.

Born Aug. 8, 1915, in Manitowoe, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Schipper) Zabinski.

She was the wife of George A. Lagassa for 65 years.

In addition to her husband, family members include one son, George K. Lagassa and his wife, Parthenia, of North Hampton; one daughter, Barbara Lagassa Tack of Exeter; three grandchildren, Jason Roach and his wife, Aki Takanezawa, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Beach and Phelps Lagassa, both of North Hampton; and one sister, Eleanor E. Hanson of Medford, Ore.

She will forever be remembered as a warm, fun-loving wife and mother, a diligent and creative craftsman and homemaker, a superb cook and a trusted friend. She leaves behind a life well-lived.

LAGASSA - Dorothy C. Lagassa, 85, of Riverwoods of Exeter, died Jan. 4, 2001. Services will be held at at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, in the Great Bay Room of Riverwoods, 7 Riverwoods Drive, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial was in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests no visiting hours and flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Raymond S. Allaire

WELLS, Maine - Raymond S. Allaire, 80, of Atlantic Avenue, Wells Beach, formerly of Sanford, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the York Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Concord, N.H., on April 9, 1920, a son of Amedee J. and Annie (Buchanan) Allaire. He graduated from Sanford High School. He served in the Army during World War II.

He was employed by the Sanford School Department as janitor for many years and was also a 20-year reserve member of the Sanford Police Department, from which he retired several years ago. He also worked at Sprague Electric. Most recently, he was a volunteer at York Hospital.

He was a member of the Sanford Lodge of Elks; past commander and lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 19; and lifetime member of Sanford Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sanford Fraternal Order of Eagles and the AARP.

He enjoyed ceramics and traveling.

He was predeceased by two wives, Winifred, who died in 1974, and Rachel, who died in 1992; and a brother Donat who died in 1999.

He is survived by four stepdaughters, Mrs. Ray (Phyllis) Lariviere of Biddeford, Mrs. Fernald (Gloria) LeBlanc of Springvale, Sylvia Cote of Lenoir City, Tenn., and Marlene Farnon of York; three brothers, Robert of Sanford, Andrew of Somersworth, N.H., and Larry of Montgomery, Ala.; five sisters, Mrs. Ted (Lillian) Perron and Mrs. Claire Gorman, both of Farmington, N.H., Mrs. Oscar (Diane) Bourque, Mrs. Bill (Helen) Vigue, and Mrs. Stella Dion, all of Sanford, and nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

ALLAIRE - Raymond S. Allaire, 80, of Wells Beach, Maine, died Jan. 3, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, where a funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the Rev. Joseph Ford officiating. Interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford, Maine, in the spring. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Camp Waban, Route 4, Sanford, ME 04073 in Mr. Allaire's memory.

Alfred D. Bushley

PORTSMOUTH - Alfred D. Bushley, 79, the husband of Mary I. (Diugan) Bushley, of 74 Osprey Drive, died Wednesday, Jan 3, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

He was born in Rumford, Maine, on Aug. 29, 1921, the son the late Alphonse W. and Isabel (Whytock) Bushley.

He was a graduate of Mexico High School, in Mexico, Maine, the Class of 1938. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for over 30 years. He was a member of AARP.

Survivors include his wife, whom he married on Nov. 24, 1956; his stepchildren, Barbara Saur of Florida and William Pike of Maine; three stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; a brother, Robert Bushley and his wife, Ora, of Windham, Maine; a nephew, David Bushley of Windham, Maine; and three nieces.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Florence N. Carbonneau

STRATHAM - Florence N. Carbonneau, 76, of Bunker Hill Avenue, died suddenly Jan. 5, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.

Born Nov. 12, 1924, in Greenfield, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Nellie (Kirk) Sparks.

She was a member of the Stratham Community Church, the church Ladies Auxiliary, the Stratham Unity Club and the Stratham 76ers. She was also a member of the Exeter Senior Citizens Knitting Club.

She was the wife of the late Lester A. Carbonneau, who died April 27, 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Lester Carbonneau and his wife, Catherine, of Stratham, and Jeffrey Carbonneau and his wife, Deanna, of Tacoma, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

CARBONNEAU - Florence N. Carbonneau, 76, of Stratham, died Jan. 5, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Stratham Community Church, with the Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine, officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Stratham Community Church, Emery Lane, Stratham, NH 03885.

Helene G. Bulley

KITTERY, Maine - Mrs. Helene G. Bulley, 80, of Kittery, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Harbor Home in York after a lengthy period of illness.

Born March 26, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Grace (Keene) Grace Sr.

She attended local schools and then attended nursing schools, specializing in radiology and laboratory technology. She was the first registered nurse to work at York Harbor Hospital, now the Harbor Home, back in 1943.

In her spare time, she was active in the Lioness Club of Kittery; she became a charter member of the Lioness and held positions as an officer.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, playing cards and Scrabble. She was an avid bingo player.

She married her husband, Llewelyn, in June 1955. She and her husband enjoyed traveling; they were both world travelers and enjoyed their former winter home in Tavares, Fla.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her daughter, Beverly Bryant and her husband, Gordon, of South Paris; a son, George Brooks and his wife, Nancy, of Berwick, and her stepson, Clifford Bulley and his wife, Brenda, of Vallejo, Calif.; her loving sister, Shirley Williams, and her husband, Frank, of Kittery; her dear brother, Ronald Grace of Atco, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She will be deeply missed by a very close friend of the family, Darren Johnson.

She was predeceased by a brother, Harold Grace Jr.

BULLEY - Funeral services for Helene G. Bulley, 80, who died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Harbor Home, York, Maine, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Burial will take place in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick. Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. this Sunday at the funeral home.
