Timothy C. Sullivan

RYE BEACH - Timothy C. Sullivan, DMD, 92, of Central Road, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at his home.

He was born on July 3, 1908, in Manchester, the son of the Honorable Thomas F. and Katherine (Cronin) Sullivan. He had summered in Rye Beach since 1955, retiring here from Manchester in 1988.

He practiced dentistry in Manchester for 54 years. He provided free dental service to many of Manchester's underprivileged children and was an early advocate of adding fluoride to the public water supply. He authored several dental articles.

During World War II, he served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was dental officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) and was executive officer of the dental clinic at Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, R.I. He also served the Selective Service by giving dental exams to inductees and received a commendation from President Truman for his service.

He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and a 1934 graduate of the Harvard College School of Dentistry. He was former president of the Manchester Dental Society and a founding member of the Tri-City Dental Society.

During his high school and college years he enjoyed ski jumping and exhibition diving, and during the early 1920s became one of the original "Brownies" by diving 40 feet through a hole in the ice at the Amoskeag Quarry.

He enjoyed dancing and was an avid bird hunter, skier and golfer. He was a member of the Rye Beach Club, the Manchester Country Club and the Abenaqui Country Club, where he served as chairman of the Greens Committee.

Family members include his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth A. (McClallen) Sullivan of Rye Beach; a son, Timothy C. Sullivan Jr. of Boston; two daughters, Elizabeth O'Leary of Lowell, Mass., and Mary-Ann Sullivan of Budapest, Hungary; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

SULLIVANM - Timothy C. Sullivan, DMD, 92, of Central Road, Rye Beach, died Jan. 5, 2001. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Saint Theresa Church, Central Road, Rye Beach. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, memorials may be made to Portsmouth Regional Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Eleanor L. Mooers

BRENTWOOD - Eleanor L. Mooers, 90, of Brentwood, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare in Exeter.

Born Dec. 24, 1910, in Farmington, she was the daughter of Earl and Ethel Edgerly and graduated from Farmington High School in 1929. Shortly thereafter she moved to Haverhill, Mass., where she met and married her beloved Robert on Oct. 11, 1930.

At the center of her life were her husband, five children and her home. A devoted homemaker and craftswoman, she exhibited her knit garments, hooked and braided rugs at local fairs, consistently bringing home blue ribbons. In spite of working many years as a full-time retail clerk or factory worker, she maintained her home and crafts throughout her long life.

In addition, she took an active role in community affairs. She served variously as an officer in her church, a Girl Scout leader, Worthy Matron of Corinthian Chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, an officer in Brentwood Senior Citizens, and an active member of the Brentwood Ladies Circle. Her love of gardening and dogs rounded out this busy life.

She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Robert L. Mooers; her first-born, Joan L. (Mooers) Connolly; a granddaughter, Sharon Connolly; and two sisters, Earline (Edgerly) Roberts and Doris (Edgerly) Bailey.

She is survived by four children, Robert L. Mooers Jr. of Bellingham, Wash.; Doris (Mooers) Dennehy of Newmarket; Richard E. Mooers of Potsdam, N.Y.; and Shirley (Mooers) Paone of Nashua; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

MOOERS - Eleanor L. Mooers, 90, of Brentwood, died Jan. 5, 2001. Friends and relatives are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today (Sunday) at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. All are also invited to a graveside service of interment to be held at 9:45 a.m. on Monday at the West Parish Cemetery, Plaistow. Following interment, at 11 a.m. there will be a memorial service at the Brentwood Baptist Church, North Road, Brentwood. It has been requested there be family flowers only. Those who wish may make donations in her name to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110; or to a memorial fund in the name of Eleanor L. Mooers, c/o Brentwood Baptist Church, North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833. Arrangements by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

Dean A. Smith

PORTSMOUTH - Dean A. Smith, 31, of 159 State St., formerly of Laconia, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 6, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 22, 1969, in Laconia, the son of David A. and Gretchen L. (Gebhardt) Smith. He was a 1988 graduate of Laconia High School and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 9 years.

At the time of his death, he was employed as a chef at Roxanne's Restaurant in Portsmouth, previously called Karen's.

While he was at Karen's, the restaurant was recognized as one of the best two restaurants on the Seacoast by the New York Times.

He was also in the process of starting his own catering business, The Front Burner.

Besides his work, he had a love for animals of all kinds.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, David A. and Diane N. (Norris) Smith of Laconia; two brothers, Christopher D. Smith of Boston and Wayne A. Norris of Laconia; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

SMITH - Dean A. Smith, 31, of 159 State St., Portsmouth, died Jan. 6, 2001. Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Dewhirst Funeral Home, 1061 Union Ave., Laconia. Services will be held immediately afterward at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. James Waugh officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NHSPCA, Portsmouth Avenue, Stratham, NH 03885.

Harry Willis

ELIOT, Maine - Harry Willis, 74, formerly of Maine Street, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born on May 1, 1926, in Portsmouth, N.H., he was a son of Harry Sr. and Eleanor (Menard) Willis and attended local schools.

He served his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He married his wife of nearly 54 years, Lois P. (York) Willis, and settled in Eliot where they raised their family.

He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1981, and he and his wife set out on a cross-country adventure seeing every state. They wintered in Apache Junction, Ariz., for a number of years and began to summer in Naples, Maine, as well. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing maintenance work. He also enjoyed several cruise ship voyages to Mexico and the Panama Canal.

He is survived by his wife Lois; two daughters and their husbands, Judith and William Rousseau of Eliot, and Jo Ann and Roy Papalia of Belmont, Mass.; two brothers, Albert Willis and Richard and Claudette Willis; four grandchildren, Aaron Rousseau, Gretchen Young, Lauren Papalia, and Matthew Papalia; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

WILLIS - Harry Willis, 74, formerly of Maine Street, Eliot, Maine, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at York Hospital. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday from the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236, Eliot. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the Eliot United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, c/o Eliot United Methodist Church, Route 236, Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Virgil R. Epperson

RYE - Col. Virgil R. Epperson, U.S. Air Force, retired, 84, formerly of Baytown, Texas, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at his home.

He was born Oct. 25, 1916, in Goose Creek, Texas. He was an Air Force officer, serving in World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, and attended Cedar Bayou United Methodist Church.

He was the husband of the late Barbara B. Epperson.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, G. William and Catherine Epperson of Rye; a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Pete Jennings of Rye; brothers, Ishmael Epperson of Baytown, Texas, and Willis Epperson of Blessing, Texas; grandchildren, Troy Jennings, Kelly Jennings, Kim Jennings Whaley, Kerry Jennings, Kristy Jennings, Seth Epperson, Amanda Epperson and Spencer Epperson; and several great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Wand Joy Epperson.

EPPERSON - Col. Virgil R. Epperson, U.S. Air Force, retired, 84, of Rye, formerly of Baytown, Texas, died Jan. 4, 2001. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Bayou (Texas) United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dan Miller officiating. Visiting hours will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Navarre Funeral Home, Baytown. Burial will be in the Cedar Bayou United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Robert L. Jackson Jr.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for CM1 Robert L. Jackson Jr., U.S. Navy, retired, 77, of 80 Haven Road, Portsmouth, were held Saturday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with services held at the North Congregational Church Chapel. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, pastor, officiated. Gary MacDonald was organist.

In attendance were members of the church.

Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring.

Dolores Barrett Lovejoy

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Dolores Barrett Lovejoy, 75, were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Wednesday. Pastor Roland Kimball officiated. Words of remembrance and poems were given by granddaughters Stacy Cullipher and Kristy Glidden.

Burial was in Central Cemetery in Rye, with committal services by Pastor Kimball. Bearers were Jamie Chambers, Jay Smith, Jared Smith, James Rekasis, Kevin Van Etten and Rick Kennedy.

Catherine C. Ahearn

PORTSMOUTH - Catherine C. Ahearn, 83, formerly of 132 Chapel St. and 280 McKinley Road, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Mark Wentworth Home after a long period of failing health.

Born in Portsmouth on Dec. 20, 1917, she was the daughter of Edward J. and Nora (Bluett) Ahearn. She was a graduate of St. Patrick School; Portsmouth High School, Class of 1935, where she received the Haven Medal for Latin; and the University of New Hampshire, Class of 1939, where she was a member of the Khi Omega Sorority.

From the onset of World War II until her retirement, she was employed in the comptroller's office at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception and a former member of the Wentworth Fairways and the Portsmouth Hospital Guild.

Survivors include two brothers, James N. Ahearn and his wife, Lucille, of South Portland, Maine; Thomas P. Ahearn of Portsmouth; one sister, Jackie Gillespie, and her husband, Jim, of South Portland, Maine; and many devoted nieces, nephews and grandnephews.

AHEARN - Catherine C. Ahearn, 83, formerly of 132 Chapel St. and 280 McKinley Road, died Jan. 8, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. No visiting hours. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the Mark Wentworth Home Social Activities Fund, 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801 or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Giacomo Rossi

EXTER - Giacomo "Jack" Rossi, 87, of Exeter Rose Farms, died suddenly Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home.

He was born May 6, 1913, in Dover, the son of the late Battista and Rosina (Iamarta) Rossi.

He resided in Exeter for more than 60 years, having been employed as a rose grower for Exeter Rose Farms, which was owned and operated by the Dagostino family.

He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Exeter.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carolina "Lena" (Dagostino) Rossi, who died in 1969; his brother, John Rossi; and two sisters, Theresa Wooten and Magdalena Rossi.

He is survived by his daughter Evelyn Dimock and her husband, Neve, of Stratham; two grandsons, N. Nathan Dimock of Washington, D.C., and Cyrus Dimock of Dover; three sisters, Josephine Gutjahr of Flanders, N.J., Lena Bohley of Rochester and Edith McManus of Dover; one brother, Louis Rossi of Somersworth; and several nieces and nephews.

Frances May Whittemore Haigh

PORTSMOUTH - Frances May Whittemore Haigh was born in September 1911, at home in Portsmouth. She was the daughter of George and Marion Whittemore. She graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1929, where she was a member of the Debating Club.

She worked for the Molly Button Factory and married James E. Haigh in 1935. She and her husband raised four children, Barry W. of Plainfield, N.J.; Bruce W. of Sinking Spring, Pa.; Brian W. and Barbara Jean McMahon, both of Doylestown, Pa.

She and her husband and children moved to Oreland, Pa., where she lived until her husband died in 1980. She then moved to Hillsboro, Texas, with her son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Eileen Haigh. While in Hillsboro, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Monday Review Club, Garden Club, Volunteer for Bond's Alley and First Ms. Late Bloomer. She was a founding member of the Corsican Street Late Bloomer's Fourth of July Parade and a member of the Hill County Republican Women's Club.

She moved to New Jersey in 1992. While in Plainfield, N.J., she was active as a member and past president of the North Plainfield Women's Club, a member of AARP, and a member of First Presbyterian Church. She moved to the New Jersey Eastern Star Home, where she died, in July.

She is survived by three daughters-in-law, Eileen, Joanne and Nori; one son-in-law, Ed; seven grandchildren, Barbara Ann Hoeppner, Kristine Anne Stevens, James Edward, Robert Brian, Amanda Jo, Heather and Kevin Haigh; five great-grandchildren, Robert and Drew Hoeppner, Harley Michael Haigh, Dakota Seth and Cheyenne Brittany Stevens.

Graveside services will be announced in the spring.

Edna Frances Blaisdell

YORK, Maine - Edna Frances (Barmby) (Jordan) Blaisdell, 75, of 7 Little River Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, in the Falmouth By The Sea Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 20, 1925, in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of Francis Norton and Mildred Ethel (Blaisdell) Barmby. She graduated from L.D. Batchelder School in North Reading, Mass., Reading High School, the University of Maine in Orono and Framingham (Mass.) State Teacher's College, Class of 1948, with a B.S. in Education.

She was a 4-H Club agent for Merrimack County in New Hampshire and for Orange County in Vermont. She was also a home economics teacher in Georgetown, Mass.

She belonged to Pi Beta Phi sorority and many professional organizations. In retirement, she enjoyed birding and was a member of local, state and national wildlife associations. She and her husband, John, made numerous trips to local wildlife refuges, as well as trips to Florida and Texas, as part of their interest in birding.

She was predeceased by two husbands, Arden Oliver Jordan and John Stewart Blaisdell.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, David Arden and Linda (Montague) Jordan of Gray; grandchildren, Tamarind Arden Jordan of Providence, R.I.; Laurel Kelsey Jordan and Arden Birch Jordan, both of Gray; brothers, Albert R. Barmby of Huntsville, Ala., and Bruce A. Barmby of Windmere, Fla.; sister, B. Jean Barmby of Boca Raton, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews in Alabama and Georgia.

BLAISDELL - Edna F. Blaisdell, 75, of 7 Little River Drive, York, Maine, died Jan. 6, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in St. George's Episcopal Church, York Street, York Harbor. There will be an hour of visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to a wildlife refuge center of one's choice.
