Gertrude Allessi

KITTERY, Maine - Gertrude Allessi, 87, of Eliot Road, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born on June 4, 1913, in Bath, she was the daughter of Leroy and Minnie (Ambrose) Shea. She was a 1933 graduate of R.W. Traip Academy in Kittery.

She was married in 1934 to her husband of over 30 years, Nazzareno Alessi. They built their home on Eliot Road and raised their family there.

She was a devoted gardener and enjoyed bowling in two women's leagues, The Merry Mixers and the Coffee Breakers.

Her first love was her family. As a devoted mother and grandmother, she enjoyed her family and watching them grow.

She is survived by her children, a daughter, Gloria, and her husband, Forrest Young, of Eliot; sons, Robert Allessi and his wife, Joan, of Kittery; and David Allessi and his wife, Joann, of Cape Neddick; a sister, Mary Coursin, and her husband, Ray, of Blairsville, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, an infant daughter and her brother, Leroy W. Shea Jr.

ALESSI - Gertrude M. Alessi, 87, of Eliot Road, Kittery, Maine, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at York Hospital. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday from St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H. Friends and family may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the Lukemia Society of American, 2900 Eisenhower Ave., Ste. 419, Alexandria, Va. 22314. Arrangements by J.S. PHILLIPS - James E. Phillips III, of 20 Kentville Terrace, Hampton, died Jan. 8, 2001. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory of Hampton.

Edward N. Foynes Jr.

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Edward N. Foynes Jr., 42, of Dyer Street, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 17, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Edward N. and Patricia (Griffin) Foynes. He was a graduate of Boston College High School and then attended Westfield State College and the University of Massachusetts.

He had been employed as a mason tender and carpenter for Daniel Young Mason Contractors of Eliot.

He loved mason work, drawing and art of all kinds. He especially enjoyed making people laugh. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Patti.

He was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Foynes.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Pecunies) Foynes of North Berwick; two brothers, Thomas Foynes, of Marshfield, Mass., and Andrew Foynes, of Scituate, Mass.; and two sisters, Patricia Foynes-Roach, of Scituate, Mass., and Maggie Foynes-Stokinger, of South Weymouth, Mass.

FOYNES - Edward N. Foynes, 42, of North Berwick, Maine, died Jan. 7, 2001. Private services will be held for the family only at Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. Friends who wish may contribute to The Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Charles F. Olsen

GONIC - Charles F. Olsen, 73, of 33 D'Amours Ave., died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Rochester Manor after a brief illness.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1927, in Moultonboro, the son of the late Fred C. and Lucy A. (Wakefield) Olsen. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II. He worked in the maintenance department at Simplex in Newington and then was employed as a marine machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for over 20 years. He was an avid fisherman and member of the Farmington Fish and Game Club in New Durham.

Family members include two sons, Chris Olsen, of Gonic, and Charles P. Olsen, of Barrington; two daughters, Colleen Freeman, of Dover, and Dianne Long, of Connecticut; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, Paul Olsen, and one daughter, Sharon Olsen.

James E. Phillips III

HAMPTON BEACH - James E. "Buddy" Phillips III, 58, of 20 Kentville Terrace, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Exeter Hospital.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass., on July 11, 1942, the son of the late James E. and Grace M. (Walton) Phillips Jr.

Raised in Quincy, Mass., he attended Boston College High School and served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He worked in management for Bell Atlantic for 32 years, retiring in 1991. After his retirement, he enjoyed doing odd jobs as a handyman in construction.

He resided in Brockton, Mass., from 1967 to 1997 and started spending his summers in Hampton Beach in 1983. After his retirement, he wintered in Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.

While living in Brockton, he was a communicant of Our Lady of Lords and currently was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal parish. He was an avid golfer.

He was the husband of Dorothy Y. (Belanger) Phillips for 36 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include one son, James E. Phillips IV, and his wife, Suzanne, of Taunton, Mass.; one sister, Barbara Jean Coughlin, and her husband, Paul, of Norwood, Mass.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

George W. Lonergan

PORTSMOUTH - George W. Lonergan, 71, of 140 Court St., died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Boston on Sept. 6, 1929, he was the son of George and Drucilla (Carter) Lonergan and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 10 years, moving here from Point Pleasant, N.J.

He was a graduate of Millburn High School in Millburn, N.J., and attended Georgetown University, Newark College of Engineering and Union Junior College.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was employed by Torwico Electronics from 1956 until retiring in 1989.

He had a great appreciation for music and also enjoyed movies, reading, the New York Jets, the New York Yankees and the New York Times.

Survivors include a sister, Mary J. Coombs, of Greenland; two brothers, Peter J. Lonergan and Martin P. Lonergan, both of Hampton Falls; 16 nieces and nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

FOYNES - Edward N. Foynes Jr., 42, of North Berwick, Maine, died Jan. 7, 2001. A requiem Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Peace Church in Berwick, with the Rev. Hilary Cameron officiating. There will be visiting hours from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. Friends who wish may contribute to The Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Frances M. DiCorato

BILLERICA, Mass. - Frances M. (Vigliaroli) DiCorato, 91, wife of the late Rocco DiCorato, died unexpectedly on Wednesday night, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.

She was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Thomas and Fedela (Lecesse) Vigliaroli, and had lived in East Boston most of her life before moving to Billerica 12 years ago.

She had been employed as a stitcher at the Life Manufacturing Co. in East Boston for 20 years, having retired at the age of 65.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church in Billerica.

Survivors include her two daughters, Fedela Vincent of Rye, N.H., and Rosalind Bartlett of Billerica; her son, Michael DiCorato of Stoneham; her brother, Michael Roli of Peabody; two sisters, Aida Bellone of Melrose and Libra Davis of Boston; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

DICORATO - Frances M. (Vigliaroli) DiCorato, 91, of Billerica, Mass., formerly of East Boston, died Jan. 10, 2001. She was the wife of the late Rocco DiCorato. Funeral will be at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Road, Billerica. Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Theresa's Church. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Friday. Burial in St. Michael Cemetery, Roslindale.

Celia Lonsway

ELIOT, Maine - A funeral service was held for Celia Lonsway on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at the Eliot United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ron Messer officiated. In attendance were family, friends and others who had been touched by the life of Mrs. Lonsway. A reading from Psalm 121 was offered by her daughter, Patricia Cress; and her granddaughter, Bonnie Bouchard, read a favorite poem, "Footprints." Words of love were offered by her grandson, Dana Ball; her son, Donald Lonsway; and close friends.

A special video of Mrs. Lonsway's birthday was shown to the congregation and many of her favorite hymns were sung, led by church organist Mrs. Marilyn Messer.

The service was followed by a time of refreshment and sharing in the church fellowship hall.

LONSWAY - Celia A. Lonsway, 94, of Farmer Road in Eliot, Maine, died Jan. 3, 2001. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday from Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot. Friends and family may call from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine. Burial will be in the spring at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

William Goodrich

ROLLINSFORD - William Goodrich, 43, of 168 Roberts Road, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born May 27, 1957, in Rochester, he was the son of Chester and Helen (Knowlton) Goodrich.

He was employed by Janco of Rollinsford for the past 14 years. He enjoyed classic automobiles.

Survivors include his father of Rollinsford; a sister, Helen (Peggy) Grobes of Dover; a brother-in-law, Mac McKinley; one nephew, Bryan M. Drew; one niece, Joscelyne K. Drew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

GOODRICH - William Goodrich, 43, of 168 Roberts Road, Rollinsford, died Jan. 8, 2001. Friends and relatives may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Cole, pastor of Bethel Christian Church, North Berwick, Maine, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford. Those who wish may make donations in his name to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, 262 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Joann F. Moriarty

ELIOT, Maine - A funeral service was held for Joann F. Moriarty on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H. The Rev. Timothy Rich and the Rev. Ann W. Stevenson officiated. The service was attended by friends, family and co-workers of Mrs. Moriarty.

Family reflections were offered by her family, and the congregation was led in song by Diane Dean, the church organist.

Participants in the service included Melinda Kimball who performed "A Closer Walk With Thee" on the clarinet and Angelynne Hinson who performed "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and "He Will Raise Me Up" as a soloist.

The service was followed by a time of refreshment and sharing in Thaxter Hall.

Jean B. Hathaway

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Jean B. Hathaway, 86, of 2 Victoria Court, formerly of Wavecrest Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born on July 7, 1914, in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Mullholland) Beattie.

She had resided in Reading, Mass., for 20 years, moving to York Harbor 28 years ago. She was a member of the Reading Garden Club and the Eastern Star and had attended the First Parish Congregational Church of York.

She was predeceased by her husband, George F. Hathaway, who died in 1993.

Survivors include one son, Charles T. Hathaway of Uvalde, Texas; one daughter, Carole A. Frazier of York Harbor; two brothers, George Beattie of Augusta, Ga., and Thomas Beattie of Tewksbury, Mass.; one sister, Arlene Turner of Colonial Beach, Va.; and two grandchildren, Sheryl Frazier of Rockland, Mass., and Gary Frazier of Lafayette, Colo.

HATHAWAY - Jean B. Hathaway, 86, of York Harbor, Maine, died Jan. 11, 2001, in York. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in the First Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Anna H. Davis

CARNEYS POINT, N.J. - Anna H. Davis, 95, of Carneys Point died Jan. 9, 2001, at the home of her son Ronald in Wheaton, Md.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late George and Cidney Holston (Harkins). She was predeceased by her husband Raymond E., in 1996, and a brother, George.

She was a homemaker, a longtime member of the Penns Grove Women's Club; taught Sunday school for 50 years; published a volume of poetry; was a Carneys Point tax collector, an accomplished oil painter and founding member of the First Assembly of God Church in Carneys Point.

She resided in Carneys Point for 78 years.

Survivors include three sons, Clarke P. Davis of Noblesville, Ind., Ronald A. Davis of Wheaton, Md., and Kent E. Davis of Pennsville, N.J.; three daughters, Rayanna D. Baines of Cranford, N.J., Nancy L. Perkins of Silver Spring, Md., and Sandra D. Flower of Arlington, Va.; a brother, Samuel Holston of Florida; a sister, Pauline Hall of California; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, at the First Assembly of God Church, Georgetown Road, Carneys Point. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Congregational Church in Newington, N.H., and interment at Newington Cemetery. Please make contributions to "The Raymond E.
