John N. Blacklock

WOOLWICH, Maine - John N. Blacklock, 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at his home in Woolwich after a long illness.

He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Jan. 19, 1924, the son of Dr. Nielson and Muriel DeJersey-White Blacklock. He attended the prestigious Bishops College School and later received a master's degree in mathematics from McGill University.

He served in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces during World War II and later in their groundbreaking expeditions into the Arctic territories, going on yearlong treks to build landing strips and base camps. He ended his military career in 1950 after receiving the distinguished King George's Medal as well as the French and German Star.

In April of 1961 he married Dorothy Skelley. They emigrated to the United States following their marriage and made their home in Pennsylvania.

He became a naturalized citizen in 1966.

They also lived in Charleston, S.C., and New Hampshire before moving to Georgetown, Maine, in 1994. For the last two and a half years they have made their home with his daughter, Mrs. Kelly (Sophie) Baker in Woolwich.

He was known as an expert sailor and the picture his closest friends have of him is at the wheel of a sailboat, navigating his way up and down the Atlantic coast or any other body of water he could find.

He was a competitive target shooter and volunteered a great deal of his time with the New Hampshire Junior Shooters' Association in an effort to teach young people firearm safety. He was also an avid reader.

Surviving are his wife; his daughter and son-in-law; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Sidney (Elizabeth) Rawlinson Sundell of Enosburg Falls, Vt.; a stepson and his wife, Brian and Julie Fowle of England; a half-sister, Alexandra Wallis of Montreal; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

BLACKLOCK - John Nielson Blacklock, 76, of Woolwich, Maine, died Jan. 9, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Friday) at the David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath, Maine, with Pastor Mark Wilson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104; or to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Irene Meehan Kondrat

FREEDOM - Irene Meehan Kondrat of Ossipee Lake Road died peacefully Jan. 10, 2001, at Memorial Hospital from complications of a recent automobile accident.

Born on June 4, 1917, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Mabel (Harrigan) and Thomas F. Meehan.

She graduated valedictorian of Portsmouth High School in 1935, and attended the University of New Hampshire.

She worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II.

In 1963 the family moved to Freedom. She worked as a dispatcher for State Police Troop E. Later she worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring as postmaster of the Freedom post office.

She was active in many civic organizations such as the Community Club, Freedom Library, Freedom School, St. Joseph's parish, and the Lakeview Cemetery, her final resting place.

She is survived by four sons, James P. of Middleton, Thomas Z. and his wife, Elaine, of Freedom, Michael S. of Freedom, and Peter A. and his wife, Shauna, of Conway; their father, James J. Kondrat of Freedom; her sisters, Ronnie Andrews of Middle Haddam, Conn., and Barbara Robbins and her brother-in-law, Lt. Col. Stephen Robbins, of Freedom; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Kathy, predeceased her.

KONDRAT - Irene Meehan Kondrat of Ossipee Lake Road, Freedom, died Jan. 10, 2001. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 15 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chocorua. Following the Mass, friends and family are invited to her home at 1005 Ossipee Lake Road for a celebration of her life. Interment will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Freedom Public Library.

James. E. Phillips III

HAMPTON - The funeral for James. E. Phillips III, 58, of 20 Kentville Terrace was held Thursday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.

The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patrice Chaisson was soloist. Altar servers were George Brown, Bernard Arguin and Andrew Bobolas.

The pall was placed over the casket by Mr. Phillips' son, James E. Phillips IV. Michele Smith, Suzanne Phillips and Lesley Bobolas offered readings. Betty Smith and Tara Olson presented the gifts to the altar. Mr. Phillips' sister, Barbara Coughlin, and his son Jim offered words of remembrance.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the rite of committal conducted by Father Ham. Pallbearers were John Gurskis, Lawrence Letourneau, Harry Bobolas, Gary Smith, Steve Nordahl and Daniel Reed.

Valerie J. Greenwood

KENSINGTON - Valerie J. Greenwood, 60, of 23 Osgood Road died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a lengthy illness.

She was the wife of Richard W. Greenwood.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., on May 26, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Geraldine (Staples) Lowry. She had been a resident of Kensington for the past 31 years, previously residing in Amesbury, Mass.

She had worked as a manager at the Richdale's Store on High Street, Newburyport, Mass., for more than 20 years, after which she worked for the Seabrook Dog Track in Seabrook.

She enjoyed crafts, cooking, the beach and Plum Island.

Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Holly Sargent of San Francisco, Colleen Soucie of Kensington, Candace Soucy and her husband, John, of South Hampton, and Barbara Claridge and her husband, Jess, of Newmarket; six grandchildren, Stephanie, Katelyn and Kerri Soucie, all of Exeter, Christian Soucy of South Hampton, and Jess and Lindsay Claridge of Newmarket; and her very special friend, Melinda Cronin of Salisbury, Mass.

GREENWOOD - Valerie J. Greenwood, 60, of 23 Osgood Road, Kensington, died Jan. 10, 2001. Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 287 High St., Newburyport, Mass. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Newburyport. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, 280 Hillside Ave., Needham, MA 02494.

Harry Willis

ELIOT, Maine - A funeral service was held for Harry Willis on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236. The Rev. Ron Messer officiated with readings and kind words spoken by Chaplain White from Meetinghouse Village in Kittery.

A candle of remembrance was lit by each of his grandchildren and words of love were spoken on behalf of all the grandchildren by Mr. Willis's grandson, Aaron Rousseau. In attendance were some of his classmates and friends from the United States Marine Corps that he served with. Kind words of remembrance were also spoken by Marla Levy-Evans, a social worker at Sentry Hill in York Harbor.

The congregation was led in singing some of his favorite hymns by organist Nancy Jones, and solo performances were sung by Ken Fernald. A time of sharing was held in the church parish hall after the service. Arrangements were by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

William Brewster Corwin

SANFORD, Maine - William Brewster Corwin, 52, of Manor Circle died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Goodall Hospital in Sanford, after a long illness.

Born in Detroit, he was the son of Mansel and Georgia (Brewster) Corwin. He attended schools in Michigan, and was a graduate of Ferndale High School. He studied forestry at Northern Michigan University and Oakland Community College. He studied surveying at several Florida colleges after moving there with his family.

He served with the U.S. Navy, working in aircraft maintenance.

He was employed for more than 20 years in surveying and related occupations. He attained his CNA certificate, and worked at several health care facilities in southern Maine, including The Homestead in Kittery.

He had a passion for the outdoors, and enjoyed sailing, hunting and fly-fishing.

Family members said he will be remembered for the joy and laughter he brought to all who knew him because of a unique sense of humor and compassion for people.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Gould Brown Corwin of Sanford; a daughter, Karen Corwin Levos, of Novi, Mich.; a sister, Carolyn Corwin Lebrun of Ellsworth; and two grandsons, Joshua Levos and Luke Levos, both of Novi, Mich.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at the home of Carolyn and Joe Lebrun, 757 Nicolin Road, Ellsworth.

Tania Candee

IPSWICH, England - Tania Candee, 37, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001.

She was born in England on March 2, 1963. She was raised in Portsmouth before moving to Ispwich, where she enjoyed life with her two sons. She will be sadly missed by many family and friends.

Survivors include her two sons, Tyrone and Anton Candee; her mother, Maureen Pettiford; her father, George Candee; two sisters, Michelle Brock and Monique (Jones) Howell; one brother, Miguel Jones; three nieces; three nephews; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A service for family and friends will be announced at a later date.

Gertrude Alessi

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral service was held for Gertrude Alessi on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H., with the Rev. Tim Rich officiating. In attendance were her family, many friends and her bowling pals. Words of remembrance from her children were read by the Rev. Tim Rich and the congregation was led in song by organist Diane Dean. Ushers were Mr. Albion and Mrs. Virginia Edwards. Pallbearers were her grandchildren and nephews.

The congregation joined for a time of sharing at her son Robert Alessi's home in Kittery following the service. Arrangements by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Lilia E. Hoyt Kane

FARMINGTON, Maine - Lilia E. Hoyt Kane, 73, of Middle Street, died Friday morning, Jan. 12, 2001, at her home.

Born in Eliot on June 22, 1927, she was the daughter of John S. and Helen (Dana) Hoyt. She received her education in Eliot schools and graduated from Eliot High School in 1944.

She worked as a bookkeeper for William E. Dennet for 25 years and later worked in the bookkeeping department at G.H. Bass in Wilton and Farmington Shoe Co. She assisted the Franklin County commissioners with the CETA program and had worked at LaVerdiere's Drug Store in Farmington, where she retired in 1991.

She was past president of the Eliot Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and she enjoyed spending time with her family as well as playing cards, crocheting, and knitting. She also was fond of Peppermint Patties.

She is survived by her three children, Sandra "Sandy" Hallman of Skowhegan; the Rev. Michele St. Cyr and her husband, Donald, of Wilton; and Michael Kane and his wife, Rhonda, of Industry; her former husband, Fay Kane of Scarborough; four sisters, Hazel Barker of Temple; Marjorie Savage and her husband, Clinton, of West Farmington; Myrtle Haney and her husband, Donald, of Farmington; and Eva Say and her husband, Ron, of Hebron, Conn.; four brothers, Dana Hoyt and his wife, Beryl, of Farmington; her twin, Walter Hoyt and his wife, Mildred, of Eliot; William Hoyt and his wife, Lillian, of Temple; and Jack Hoyt and his wife, Sandra, of Temple; her grandchildren, Robin Baumgartel and her husband, Ed, of East Dixfield; Robert Hallman Jr. of New Sharon; Rebecca Hallman of Turner; Ryan Hallman and his wife, Heather, of Avon; and Dana Kane of Industry; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Fitch of Turner; and Haylee and Shantel Hallman, both of Avon; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a baby brother, John; and a sister, Louise Nicholas.

KANE - Lilia E. Hoyt Kane, 73, of Middle Street, Farmington, Maine, died Jan. 12, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday from the Trinity United Methodist Church in Farmington. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Wiles Funeral Home, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington. Those who desire may make contributions in her memory to the Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 511, Farmington, ME 04938.

Vera Outhouse

YORK, Maine - Mrs. Vera Outhouse, 101 years old, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Harbor Home in York.

She was born Nov. 21, 1899, in New York City, the daughter of Arthur and Ida (Halstead) MacBain. She attended schools in New York City. In 1920 she married Charles H. Outhouse in Montrose, N.Y. Her husband died in 1977.

In 1979 she moved from New York to live with her daughter and her family in South Attleboro, Mass. In 1986 they moved to York.

She was a devoted wife and mother, and over the years she was active with the Seventh Day Advent Church. She was a former member of that church in Peekskill, N.Y., and also a member of the Portsmouth Seventh Day Advent Church.

She was predeceased by a sister, Meta Conklin. She is survived by two daughters, Vera Weller of York, and Murial M. Fogg of Mt. Plymouth, Fla. She will be deeply missed by her beloved three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and her one great-great-grandchild.

No funeral services or visitations will be held. A family memorial service and burial will be held at a later date.

Bernice M. Kelley

PORTSMOUTH - Bernice M. "Bunny" (Hersey) Kelley, 73, the wife of Kenneth M. Kelley of 213 Oriental Gardens, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born in Eliot, Maine, on Oct. 25, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Robina F. (Brewster) Hersey.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1945.

Prior to her retirement, she had been employed in Civil Service for more than 20 years as an office administrator.

Besides her husband of 51 years, survivors include a daughter, Robbie I. Kelley of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Darryl A. Kelley of Easley, S.C.; four grandchildren, Ashley K. Kelley of Charlotte, N.C.; Daniel B. Kelley, Laura B. Kelley and Emily R. Kelley, all of Easley, S.C.; a brother, Eugene Hersey of Portsmouth; an aunt, Lora Johnson of Honolulu; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

KELLEY - Bernice M. "Bunny" (Hersey) Kelley, 73, of 213 Oriental Gardens, Portsmouth, died Jan. 11, 2001. Graveside services will be held at the Newington Cemetery, Newington, in the spring. Please omit flowers. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Arrangements by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

LORD - Marjorie V. Lord, formerly of 78 Dearborn Ave., Hampton, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass. If desired, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833; or to the Seacoast Visiting Nurse Association, 29 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, NH 03862.

Phyllis Drury

OGUNQUIT, Maine - Phyllis Drury, 75, of Shore Road, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in South Carolina while visiting her son.

Born March 12, 1925, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of Frederick and Elsie Westerholm Danielson.

She was employed for 18 years with the Portsmouth school system, primarily at the Brackett School, and since 1970, operated the Yardarm Village Inn in Ogunquit with her husband.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Lawrence Drury of Ogunquit; two sons, Jay Drury of Hilton Head, S.C., and Scott Drury of Ogunquit; and two granddaughters, Anne and Whitney Drury.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.
