Michael P. Smothers

KITTERY - Funeral services for Michael P. Smothers, 47, of 16 Wilson Road, were held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Wednesday. Deacon Claude Spencer of St. Christopher's Church in York officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Joseph Munroe.

In attendance were associates from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

The American flag was presented to his widow, Claire A. (Blethen) Smothers.

Zane S. Blanchard

HAMPTON - Zane S. Blanchard, 72, of 799 Ocean Blvd., died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Lewiston, Maine, Oct. 17, 1928, the son of the late Harold C. and Olive (Lameroux) Blanchard.

He was a graduate of Groveton (N.H.) High School and Tufts University where he participated in the ROTC program, graduating with the Class of 1950.

He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He retired last year as a self-employed manufacturers' representative in the pulp and paper industry, owning and operating Zane S. Blanchard & Co. Inc. for many years.

He resided in Hampton the past 27 years and had lived for many years in Yarmouth, Maine.

He served on the Hampton Highway Safety Committee and was a member of the Retired Naval Officers Association, Tufts Alumni Association, national chapters of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the SCORE, TAPPI and PIMA organizations.

He was the husband of Bonnie L. (Dumont) Blanchard for 25 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include two sons, Bret S. Blanchard of Dennysville, Maine, and Scot S. Blanchard of Greenland; four grandchildren, Joshua Blanchard, James Blanchard, Elissa Mitchell and Rebekah Blanchard; and three nephews.

BLANCHARD - Zane S. Blanchard, 72, of 799 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, died Jan. 25, 2001. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.

Marion L. (Hosmer) Marcotte

PORTSMOUTH - Marion L. (Hosmer) Marcotte died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in Portsmouth.

The beloved wife of the late Leo A. Marcotte, she was born in Manchester and has been a resident of Portsmouth since 1935.

She was a top-rated dealer and sales manager for Stanley Home Products in the Seacoast Area for almost 50 years. Prior to that she sold women's head apparel at Marden's Millinery in the Square in downtown Portsmouth.

She was a daily communicant at Immaculate Conception Parish. She loved to cook and was skilled in the art of making afghans.

She leaves two surviving children, Ronald L. Marcotte of Weymouth, Mass., and Carol A. McCormack of Naperville, Ill.; as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Richard A. Marcotte.

MARCOTTE - Marion L. Marcotte, formerly of 558 Union St., Portsmouth, died Jan. 24, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Church. Visiting hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

Martin R. Fortier Sr.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Martin R. Fortier Sr., 76, of Bowling Green, died on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Greenview Hospital.

Born in Somersworth, N.H., he was the son of the late Alfred and Claudia Lynch Fortier.

He was a retired truck driver and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Fortier of Bowling Green; three sons, Daniel Fortier of Bowling Green, Michael Fortier of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Martin Fortier Jr. of Bowling Green; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert S. Roberge

GREENLAND - Funeral services for Robert S. Roberge, 64, of 304 Post Road, were held Friday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Michael's Church in Exeter. Father Marc Drouin, pastor, was celebrant.

Draping of the pall was by his wife, Barbara (Reed) Roberge, and sisters, Pauline Weiss and Mary Lou Connolly. Altar servers were Al Markey, Raymond Russell and Ted Clamarczyk. Presentation of the gifts was by Thomas and Lucille Reed. Soloist was John Kelly. Denise Kelly was organist.

In attendance were communicants of the church and representatives from the N.H. Turnpike Authority.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Drouin. The American flag that draped the casket was presented to his widow.

Bearers were Fred Serna, David Oscar Reed, Edward Heath, Leonard Novak, Lee Powers and Robert Reed.

Wake services were held Thursday at the funeral home in Portsmouth by Father Rick St. Louis.

David (Tex) Molineux

KITTERY, Maine - David (Tex) Molineux, 93, formally of Pompano Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 24, 2001, surrounded by his family, who loved him so much.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 2, 1909. He served in the Army during World War II and was decorated for service at the Battle of the Bulge.

Moving to Florida with his family in the '50s, he and his wife Mildred owned and operated a restaurant, Buds Take-out, which is still in operation today. In 1964 he was the Elks Man of the Year in Pompano Beach. In his 60s, instead of retirement, he and his wife traveled to New Hampshire where he was the head chef at the Wentworth by the Sea Fairways, which were some of his happiest years. He had many, many friends, always returning to Florida each winter.

He was most proud of his family, his two children, Nancy Madden and her husband, Hank, of Eliot, and David Molineux and his wife, Phyllis, of Taos, N.M.; his five grandchildren, Sean Arnold and his wife, Kathleen, of South Berwick, Myca Wateson and her husband, Darren, of Pompano Beach, Fla., Allison Schultze of Pompano Beach, Skye Molineux and his wife, Fabiana, of Pompano Beach, Kelly Koch and her husband, Bill, of Germany; and his seven great-grandchildren, who brought such joy to him everyday. He will be missed by all.

A celebration of his life will take place at 6 p.m. on Monday at the Metro restaurant in downtown Portsmouth.

Nancy R. Currier

NORTHWOOD - Nancy R. Currier, 50, of Northwood, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, after a long and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis.

Born Sept. 9, 1950, she grew up in Kittery, Maine, and was the daughter of Robert and Marion (Watterson) Hunkins.

She lived in the Northwood area most of her adult life and very much enjoyed the outdoors, including snowmobiling, swimming, gardening and bird-watching.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, James (Deke) Currier of Northwood; a son, Michael Williams and his wife, Angie, of Somersworth; stepdaughter, Angela Currier and her son, Zachary, of Nottingham; stepdaughter, Danae Currier, and her sons, Jeremiah and Eric, of Sanford, Maine; stepson, Ernest Currier of Sanford, Maine; her parents, Robert and Marion Hunkins of Kittery, Maine; brothers, Christopher Hunkins of Sturbridge, Mass., and Richard Hunkins of Sedalia, Mo.; a sister, Cathy McKeel of South Berwick, Maine; sisters-in-law, Jean Parsley, Judy Mandigo and Corliss Elliot; brother-in-law, William Currier; many nieces and nephews; and a number of close friends.

She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Nancy Quintal.

CURRIER - Nancy R. Currier, 50, of Northwood, died Jan. 25, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of the Rockingham County Nursing Home, 117 North Road, Brentwood. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice, or to the Multiple Sclerosis Fund. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H.

Alphonse J. Jean

EPPING - Alphonse J. Jean, 76, of Fremont Road, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Exeter Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 27, 1924, in Epping, he was the son of the late Alfred J. and Josephine (Lavoie) Jean.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Epping. He formerly was employed with Enos Brickyard in Exeter, and Wise Shoe Co. in Exeter.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Epping.

He is survived by one daughter, Michele D. Jean-Hicklin, of Jonesboro, Tenn.; and one son, Joseph Jean of Rochester. He originally came from a family of 14 children, and is now survived by four sisters, Clara Morrissette of Exeter, Mary T. Faucher of Raymond, Gemma Jean King of Epping, Cecile Raiche of Manchester; and three brothers, Agapit Jean of Epping, Jerome Jean of Epping and Thomas Jean of Rochester; one stepsister, Lucille Lavoie of Manchester; two stepbrothers, Wilfred Lavoie of Epping and Lucien Lavoie of Nottingham; and several nieces and nephews.

JEAN - Alphonse J. Jean, 76, of Fremont Road, Epping, died Jan. 25, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Church, Epping. His nephew, Father Agapit Jean, will officiate. Spring burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Epping. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Epping Ambulance Fund, c/o the Epping Fire Department, Pleasant Street, Epping, NH 03042.

Robert W. Batchelder

HAMPTON - Robert W. Batchelder, 78, of 85 Winnacunnet Road, former longtime resident of Brown Road in Hampton Falls, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at SunBridge of Exeter.

Born in Exeter on Dec. 31, 1918, he was the son of the late Wallace H. and Florence E. (Powers) Batchelder.

A resident of Hampton Falls for most of his life, he attended school there. After graduating from Hampton Academy, he entered the United States Army, serving as a staff sergeant in Italy during World War II. Once discharged, he entered Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass., graduating with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

He was employed as a sales representative for the Aetna Insurance Co., working out of the Boston office for more than 20 years.

He was active in the town government of Hampton Falls. He was a seven-year member of the Planning Board, acting as chairman for four of those years. He also had been instrumental in fine-tuning many of the zoning ordinances, which have helped protect the town from overdevelopment, thus, helping maintain its rural character.

In 1987 he was appointed by the selectmen to act as the town's representative to the Southeast Regional Solid Waste District and also served as chairman of the district. He was involved with town government by attending meetings, hearings, and by offering his services to the town.

He helped raise funds for the Hampton Falls Police Department, and also helped research the old street names in preparation for the implementation of Emergency 911.

He was the husband of Jeanne (Colt) Batchelder.

In addition to his wife, family members include one brother, Gerald M. Batchelder and his wife, Elizabeth, of Stratham; five nephews and one niece.

BATCHELDER - Robert W. Batchelder, 78, of 85 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, died Jan. 26, 2001. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests that there be no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Hampton Falls Police Department, P.O. Box 505, Hampton Falls, NH 03844; or to the charity of one's choice.

Hazel E. Ayles

EXETER - Hazel E. Ayles, 82, of 277 Water St., died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare.

Born in Manchester, July 18, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Grace E. (Trull) Moore.

She attended Manchester schools and was a 1943 graduate of Manchester High School.

She lived in Hampton Falls for many years until moving to Exeter in 1968.

She worked as a dietary aid at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood for 15 years, before retiring in 1985. She was a member of the Kitchen Kut-Ups and Tide Mill Chapter No. 67 O.E.S. in Hampton.

She was the wife of the late Robert L. Ayles, who died in 1964.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Myrtle Woodward; two brothers-in-law, George Ayles and his wife, Eva, and Duncan Ayles and his wife, Marian; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

AYLES - Hazel E. Ayles, 82, of 277 Water St., Exeter, died Jan. 25, 2001. Services will be held in the West View Cemetery, Hampton Falls, in the spring. At her request, there will be no visiting hours. Please omit flowers. If desired, donations may be made to the Activities Department, c/o Exeter Healthcare Inc., 4 Alumni Drive, Exeter, NH 03833. Arrangements by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Patricia R. Morgan

HAMPTON - The funeral for Patricia R. Morgan, 78, formerly of Tuttle Avenue, was held on Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. John Gee of Auburn, Mass., and the Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, were the celebrants.

Altar servers represented the Holy Name Society of the church. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Mrs. Morgan's three sons, Robert L. Morgan Jr., C. Gary Morgan and Jeffrey J. Morgan, placed the pall over the casket. Grandchildren Kristin and Ryan offered the readings. The gifts were presented to the altar by her two daughters-in-law, Patsy Morgan and Lynn Morgan.

Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the Rite of Committal conducted by Father Gee. Pallbearers were Benton Morgan, Clark Morgan, Ryan Morgan, Kevin Lonergan, Chip Moynihan and Richard Moynihan.

Catherine G. Barden

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Catherine G. Barden, 49, of Short Farm Road, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, suddenly at her home.

Born July 5, 1951, in Exeter, N.H., she was a daughter of Leslie O. and Constance B. (Brennan) Barden and attended local schools. She graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and attended the University of New Hampshire.

She was a homemaker and was previously employed for many years by the Feminist Health Center in Greenland, N.H. She had a fond love of animals, particularly horses.

She was the wife of Robert M. Grant.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her parents, Leslie Barden of Farmington, N.H., and Constance Barden of Alfred; three children, Tate B. Hawes of Burlington ,Vt., Crispin M. Grant and Robin G. Grant; a brother, Russell Barden of Richmond; two sisters, Sayre Downs of Kittery Point and Rhona Jones of North Berwick; and many nieces and nephews.

BARDEN - Catherine G. Barden, 49, of Short Farm Road, Kittery Point, Maine, died Jan. 27, 2001, suddenly at her home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations in her memory to York Hospital, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery, ME 03904.
